Wednesday evenings had become something.
Ethan had noticed this gradually, the way you noticed patterns that had not been deliberately created — first as an observation without significance, then as an observation with significance that he was still determining, and finally as a fact about his week that he had accepted without requiring it to mean something specific.
On Wednesday evenings, when the building's pace had slowed to its mid-week nadir and the practice obligations had been discharged and the next day's preparation was complete, he went to the corner.
He did not decide to go. He simply found himself going.
This was, he had come to understand, what *hướng* meant — or rather, what the thing he had not yet named had been building toward: not a decision, but a direction that had become so internalized that it operated below the threshold of conscious choice. He went the way water went downhill: not because he had thought about it, because that was where things went when they were not being redirected.
At eight seventeen PM on this particular Wednesday, he turned the corner into the corridor and saw the light.
She was there.
Of course she was there.
---
She was in the configuration she was often in when he arrived after her: sideways on the bench, feet tucked under her, notebook in her lap with the pen resting in the spine rather than in her hand. Looking at the window. Not through it, exactly — the specific quality of someone whose attention was turned inward and the window was just the direction their eyes had landed.
He sat down.
She did not look up immediately, which was fine. He was not there for her to look up at him. He was there because this was where he went on Wednesday evenings, and she was also there because this was where she went, and the two facts coexisted without requiring reconciliation.
The city below was doing its Wednesday things. The courtyard was in its nighttime configuration — two lit fixtures, the ambient glow from beyond the walls, the specific quality of outdoor spaces in buildings that existed surrounded by city rather than nature.
He looked at it.
She looked at the window.
The building made its small sounds around them.
---
The silence lasted, by his peripheral count, approximately eleven minutes.
He had not been tracking it consciously. He had simply been present, which was a mode he was still practicing and which was still slightly uncomfortable in the way that new things were uncomfortable before they became familiar. Not painful — just the specific friction of doing something differently than you had done it before.
At eleven minutes, she refocused.
He saw it happen — the small shift of someone returning from internal to external, the reorientation of attention from in here to out there. She looked at the window properly, then at the notebook, then — gradually, without the quality of decision — at him.
He looked back.
She said: "Can I ask you something about the game?"
Not *I have a question about tactical positioning* or *I wanted to run a scenario by you* — the framing she might have used in a professional context, the framing that would have made the question a work exchange rather than a question. Just: *can I ask you something about the game.* The phrasing of someone who wanted to know what another person thought.
"Yes," he said.
"How do you think about information asymmetry in late game? When your team has more vision than the opposing team and you're deciding how to use it?"
He looked at her for a moment.
This was a real question. He could tell the difference — between questions that were setups for a point the asker had already reached and questions that were genuine requests for another person's thinking. This was the second kind. She wanted to know how he thought about it.
He told her.
---
He told her more than he had told anyone who was not Marcus.
This was not a decision he made consciously — it was simply what happened when someone asked a real question and he answered it honestly. The answer expanded into its actual shape rather than the compressed version he usually offered in team contexts, where efficiency was more important than completeness.
He talked about the way information asymmetry changed the nature of every decision in late game — not just the decisions that directly used the vision advantage, but all of them, because knowing more than your opponent changed the probability weighting of every choice even when the vision itself was not the instrument. He talked about the specific error pattern he had observed in teams that had vision advantage but did not use it well: they used the information to confirm what they already wanted to do rather than to interrogate whether what they wanted to do was correct. Vision, he said, was most valuable not when it showed you the path you were already on but when it showed you that the path you were on was wrong.
She was listening in the way she listened.
He had cataloged this — the complete quality of it, the absence of the micro-adjustments of someone preparing their next contribution, the specific stillness of someone who was receiving rather than waiting. He had cataloged it and now he was experiencing it directly, on the receiving end of his own observation, and it was different from knowing about it abstractly. It was — the word arrived without fanfare — nice.
He finished.
She was quiet for a moment.
"I approach it differently," she said. "From the support perspective, the question isn't really about how to use the information advantage — it's about how to maintain it long enough for the team to act on it. Vision decays. The window between having information and having actionable information is shorter than most people think." She turned the notebook over in her hands. "So for me, the decision is less about what to do with the vision and more about how to create the conditions where the vision we have is the vision we need at the moment we need it."
He thought about this.
It was, he recognized, the complement of his own thinking — the same problem from the other side of the positional equation. He had been thinking about how to use vision advantage; she had been thinking about how to ensure the vision advantage existed at the right moment. The two approaches required each other.
"That changes how you'd set up the late-game vision structure," he said.
"Yes. Everything is timed to the decision window rather than the map state."
"Which requires predicting the decision window."
"Which is most of the job," she said, "regardless of position."
He considered this and found it accurate.
---
The conversation went on.
He was not sure when it stopped being about vision control. It happened the way these things happened at the corner — gradually, through the accumulated drift of a conversation that was following its own logic rather than a predetermined endpoint. The subject became less specific, then more personal, then something that was not quite either.
She said something about the way she had learned to read games that was connected to the elevator conversation — the literature angle, the gap between what was present and what was supposed to be there. He said something about the specific limitation he had identified in his own approach since writing the notebook entries. She asked about the notebook entries without knowing that was what she was asking about, and he told her, not entirely.
At some point he became aware that he had not checked the time in a while.
This was unusual. He maintained ambient time awareness the way he maintained ambient spatial awareness — as a background function that did not require attention but was always running. It was not running. He had been here and in the conversation and nowhere else, and the time had been passing without his tracking it.
He did not check it.
---
The conversation reached its end the way good conversations reached their ends: not because it had run out of material but because something had been said that wanted to settle before anything more was added.
She had said something — he would remember the content later, for now it was the quality of it that registered — and he had responded, and his response had been received, and there was a silence after it that had a different texture from the silence that had opened the evening. Fuller. Warmer. The silence of a space that had been occupied by something and was now holding its shape after the thing had finished.
She looked at the window.
He looked at the window.
The courtyard below was unchanged from two hours ago — same fixtures, same ambient glow, same quality of outdoor space at night. He looked at it and found that it looked different, which was the thing about spaces that had changed: they looked like themselves and also like what had happened in them.
Lyra stood.
She picked up her notebook — the pen was still in the spine, he noticed, which meant she had not written anything the entire evening, which meant she had been fully here rather than splitting her attention. He noticed this and filed it in the place he had been filing things about her for months.
At the entrance to the corridor, she stopped.
She did not turn around this time.
She said: "Good conversation."
Two words. He had learned the weight of two words.
"Yes," he said.
She turned and walked away.
He stayed.
---
The corner was quiet.
He looked at the window for a while after she left — the west-southwest view, two hundred sixty degrees, the city doing what it did in the hours after ten. He had been here many times. Tonight it felt like the first time he had been fully present in it rather than using it as the location of his thoughts.
He thought about the conversation.
Not the content — he would return to the content when it was useful, and it would be useful, the vision timing framework she had described was directly applicable to a problem he had been turning over for two weeks. The content was good and he would use it.
But the content was not what he was thinking about.
He was thinking about the specific quality of the conversation itself — the way it had not been about anything except what it was about, the way there had been no performance layer, no strategic management of what he was or was not communicating, no awareness of himself as a captain or a competitor or a person with a reputation to maintain. Just: thinking, and saying what he thought, and hearing what she thought, and thinking again.
He had not had a conversation like that before.
Not in the tactical sense, not in the relational sense. He had conversations — many of them, and some of them were good conversations, and some of them were useful conversations, and some of them were both. But they had always been, at some level, conversations toward something. Information exchange, relationship maintenance, problem-solving, preparation.
This had been a conversation because both of them were here and both of them were interested and there was no reason not to.
He did not have a framework for that.
He sat with the absence of framework for a moment.
Then, with the specific ease of someone who had stopped reaching for the framework, he let the absence be what it was.
He did not need a framework.
He needed to be here, in this corner, in this city, in this building, talking to this person when they were both here and both interested.
That was enough.
It was, he thought, more than enough.
He stayed until the courtyard light changed — some automatic adjustment in the building's systems, the fixtures dimming slightly for the late-night configuration — and then he took the long route to his room and thought about vision timing and the space between what was present and what was supposed to be there, and both trains of thought ran alongside each other without interference all the way to his door.
