The women's team practice room had a different quality in the early morning than it did during sessions.
Lyra had noticed this on the first day and filed it without acting on it, the way she filed most observations that were interesting but not immediately useful. Now, on the fifth morning, she was acting on it: arriving fifteen minutes before the scheduled start time, setting up her station in the quiet, letting the room be a room before it became a workspace.
It was a small thing. It mattered to her anyway.
She pulled up her footage playlist — twelve clips, flagged the previous night, each one a moment from the past week's scrimmages that she wanted to look at again with more distance. She had learned, over years of playing, that the best analysis happened in two stages: the immediate read, which was fast and instinctive and caught the obvious things, and the delayed read, which was slower and more honest and caught everything the immediate read had been too close to see.
She was on her third clip when the others started arriving.
Zara came first, then Ha Linh, then Bao Chau and Ngoc Mai together, talking about something that had happened in a ranked game the previous night. The room filled with the particular energy of people who were still calibrating to each other — not quite the easy overlap of a team that had been playing together for years, but not the careful distance of strangers either. Something in between. Something that was, Lyra thought, moving in the right direction.
She closed her personal footage and opened the team's shared practice file.
---
Three hours of scrimmage.
The morning session had a shape to it that Lyra was beginning to recognize: the first hour was rough, everyone still finding their footing in the day, making the kind of decisions that looked obvious in retrospect and felt necessary in the moment. The second hour was better — the team started to breathe together, started to anticipate rather than react. The third hour was where the interesting things happened, the hour when fatigue stripped away the overthinking and left something closer to instinct.
Lyra liked the third hour best.
In game, she was a different person than she was anywhere else in the building. Not a better person — she did not think in those terms — but a clearer one. The variables that cluttered ordinary social interaction — the question of what people wanted from her, the work of managing her own responses, the constant low-level processing of what was said versus what was meant — fell away when she was in a match. There was only the map. There was only the next decision.
She made eleven significant decisions in the third scrimmage of the morning. She was satisfied with eight of them. The other three she flagged for review.
After the session ended and Coach Yeon — the women's team's head coach, a quiet woman in her early thirties who communicated primarily through questions rather than directives — wrapped up the debrief, the others drifted toward lunch. Lyra stayed.
"You're not eating?" Zara asked from the doorway.
"Later."
"That means no."
"That means later."
Zara looked at her with the expression she wore when she had decided something was not worth arguing about right now but reserved the right to revisit it. "I'll bring something back," she said, and left.
Lyra turned back to her screen.
---
The timestamps were: 9:23, 11:47, and 14:06.
She pulled up 9:23 first because it was the one that bothered her most — a positioning choice in the river that had worked out, technically, in the sense that she had not died and her teammate had not died and the play had resulted in a slight advantage. But it had worked out in the way that lucky decisions sometimes worked out, not in the way that correct decisions worked out, and she knew the difference.
She played the clip.
She played it again.
The habit started, the way it always started — not a decision, just a thing that happened when she was alone with footage and thinking hard. Her mouth began to move.
"Wrong entry point," she said, quietly, to no one. "I came in from tribush because it was faster but the angle gave me no escape route if they had vision on the ward. Which they did. I got lucky because their jungler was two seconds late." She tapped back fifteen seconds and played it again. "If I come through river instead — longer path, worse for timing, but I maintain two exit options and the ward placement is less predictable. Trade off speed for survival margin."
She paused the clip.
In the corridor outside, footsteps.
She registered them the way she registered background sounds during a match — present, cataloged, not acted upon. She was in the middle of a thought and the thought was more important than the footsteps. She let them pass through her attention and kept going.
The footsteps slowed outside the door.
Stopped.
She did not look up. She was at the part of the analysis where the next thirty seconds would either confirm or complicate her theory about the exit routes, and she needed to run the clip forward to check.
She ran it forward.
"Yeah," she said, softer now, the word less for communication than for confirmation — the sound of a hypothesis meeting evidence. "River. Every time in this matchup, river."
The footsteps outside resumed. Moved away down the corridor.
She pulled up timestamp 11:47.
---
By the time she reached 14:06, she had stopped being aware that she was talking.
This was the timestamp she had been least sure about flagging — the decision had felt right in the moment, and the outcome had been good, and usually those two things together meant she had done something correctly. But there was a version of the play she kept seeing in her peripheral memory, a path she had considered and rejected in the half-second she'd had to decide, and she wanted to look at it properly.
She played the clip three times before she found it.
"There," she said, pausing the footage. "That's the window. Fourteen seconds — no, thirteen, because their support is two steps ahead of where I was tracking — I had thirteen seconds where I could have done this instead." She gestured at the frozen screen with her pen, the same gesture she used when explaining something to a teammate, though there were no teammates in the room. "If I'm reading their jungler's pattern correctly from the previous four minutes — and I think I am, I think I had the data — I could have predicted the gank and been positioned to intercept rather than react. Which means instead of a three-for-two trade we get a clean ace."
She sat back.
"I had the information," she said, to the empty room. "I just didn't trust it fast enough."
This was the thing she was still working on — the gap between knowing and acting, between reading the game and committing to what the reading said. She was faster than most. She was not yet as fast as she wanted to be.
She made a note: *Trust the read. You have the data.*
Underlined it.
Added: *Thirteen seconds is enough.*
---
Zara came back forty minutes later with two containers of rice and a mango juice that she set on Lyra's desk with the air of someone completing a task they had assigned themselves.
"Thank you," Lyra said.
"Mm." Zara settled into her own chair, opened her container, and looked at her screen. A comfortable quiet settled between them — the kind that had started to feel natural in a way Lyra was still getting used to.
After a few minutes, Zara said, without looking up: "The positioning at minute nine twenty-three."
Lyra looked at her.
"I think I understand what you were trying to do," Zara continued, her tone the same one she used for tactical discussions — focused, practical, no editorial. "But the angle would work better coming through river. You keep two exits and the ward placement is less readable."
Lyra was quiet for a moment.
"I heard you on the way out," Zara said. "When I left for lunch. You were — " she made a small gesture that somehow communicated talking to yourself without being unkind about it. "The door wasn't fully closed."
"I didn't realize I was that loud."
"You weren't, really. I just happened to be walking past at the right moment." Zara finally looked at her. "You do that a lot? The out-loud analysis?"
Lyra considered lying, decided against it. "When I'm alone."
"It's good, actually. Externalizing the reasoning — it catches errors that stay invisible when you keep them in your head." Zara returned to her food. "I do it too, sometimes. Just quietly enough that nobody's accused me of talking to myself yet."
Lyra ate a bite of rice. "The river approach — you think it's consistently better in this matchup, or situational?"
"Situational. Depends on where their jungler is at the eight-minute mark. If he's top side, tribush is fine. If he's mid or bot, river every time."
"That's what I landed on."
"Then your read was right. You just need to trust it faster."
Lyra looked at her notes, at the words she had written twenty minutes ago: *Trust the read.*
She did not say anything about the coincidence. She just ate her lunch and thought about it.
---
The afternoon session was individual practice — each player working on specific mechanical elements identified in the morning debrief. Lyra's assignment from Coach Yeon was ward placement efficiency, which was, as assignments went, both the most obvious and the most interesting. Obvious because it addressed the gap that had been visible in the team's data. Interesting because the specific version of the problem that Lyra was dealing with was not a ward placement problem, exactly — it was a timing problem, a question of when to prioritize vision over impact, and the answer was different in every situation.
She worked through it for two hours, methodically, the way she worked through everything.
At some point during the second hour, she caught herself talking again — lower this time, a near-whisper, the kind of sound that would not carry past the immediate vicinity of her station. She had turned it down without consciously deciding to, and she was not sure when.
She thought about the footsteps that had stopped outside the door at lunch.
She did not know who it had been. It could have been anyone — a coach, another player, someone from management walking to a meeting. The gaming house had enough foot traffic that a set of footsteps pausing outside a door was not, in itself, significant data.
But she had turned her voice down.
And she was not, if she was being honest, entirely certain that was a coincidence.
She looked at the closed door.
The corridor beyond it was quiet.
She looked back at her screen and told herself, with the firm practicality she applied to thoughts that were not useful, that it did not matter. Whoever had walked past had walked past. She had not been doing anything she needed to be private about. The analysis was good analysis regardless of whether anyone had overheard it.
The thought did not entirely settle.
She turned her voice back up to its normal volume — not defiantly, just practically, because she thought better out loud and she was not going to compromise her process over a set of footsteps that had paused for three seconds and moved on.
She was here to work.
She worked.
Somewhere in the building, steady and even, the sound of mechanical keyboards continued their patient progress through the afternoon.
