Ethan prepared for the internal scrimmage the way he prepared for everything.
This meant: opening the women's team's shared footage folder at seven in the morning and spending ninety minutes building a profile of their decision-making patterns, their tendencies under pressure, the specific ways each player responded when their initial read on a situation turned out to be wrong. He mapped win conditions — not the women's team's win conditions, his team's, the paths from the opening minutes to a favorable outcome given the specific capabilities and tendencies of the opponent they would face at two o'clock.
The opponent happened to be the women's team of his own organization.
This was not a relevant distinction.
Kai arrived at eight-thirty and watched Ethan working for approximately thirty seconds before saying, with the restraint of someone exercising genuine effort: "You know it's a scrimmage."
"I know what it is."
"Internal. Practice. Not a qualifier match."
"I'm aware of what internal means."
Kai sat down. He was quiet for a moment. Then: "Okay."
That was the end of the conversation. Ethan returned to his notes, and Kai began his own preparation, which was less systematic and more intuitive and produced results that were, by the evidence of two years of competition, equally valid through a completely different process. Ethan had made his peace with this a long time ago.
At one forty-five, they went upstairs to the shared practice space where the scrimmage had been arranged.
---
Lyra had been in the shared practice space since one-fifteen.
She had spent the previous evening reviewing the men's team footage — all of it that was available on the server, which was a significant amount, because Ethan Shen had apparently been uploading practice sessions consistently since joining ZNT and the library was extensive. She had watched six hours of it, which was more than she needed for a single scrimmage and more than she would admit to if anyone asked.
What she had learned: he was as good as the footage suggested, which was to say very good, which she had already known. What the raw stats had not told her was the quality of his decision-making under uncertainty — the specific way he processed incomplete information and committed to action anyway, fast and accurate and almost never wrong.
Almost.
She had found three moments across six hours where he had been wrong. Not catastrophically — the kind of wrong that good players were occasionally, where the read had been correct for the information available and the information had simply been incomplete. In all three cases he had adapted within seconds. In two of the three, the adaptation had been better than the original plan would have been.
She had noted these moments with the careful attention of someone filing away exactly the kind of information that would matter.
At one fifty-eight, the men's team walked in.
Ethan came in last, which she had not expected. She had assumed he would arrive first — the kind of person who arrived first, who set the terms of the space before anyone else could. Instead he came in after his teammates, unhurried, the specific ease of someone who did not need to arrive first because they did not need to establish anything. The space was already his. It had been his before he walked in.
She looked at the station she had chosen — third from the left on the far side of the room, a position that gave her a clear sightline to the opposing team's setup without being directly adjacent — and decided it was correct.
She did not look at him again before the match started.
---
The first thing she noticed was the pace.
She had played against strong teams before. She had played against teams that were technically superior to her own and had won anyway, and teams that were technically equal and had lost to, and teams that were neither but had beaten her through preparation and coordination. She knew what it felt like to play against each of these.
She had not played against a team that simply ran at full speed and expected her to keep up.
There was no adjustment period. There was no early-game phase where both sides felt each other out and gradually escalated. The men's team played at competition pace from the first minute, which meant that Lyra's team was behind on information before they had finished calibrating to the match's rhythm.
She recalibrated faster than her teammates.
This was not modesty — it was an assessment. She had the fastest processing speed on her team, which meant that the initial shock of the pace hit her and passed through her before it hit the others. By minute two she was playing at the tempo the match required. By minute three she was starting to read it.
The vision gap appeared at minute eight, exactly where the data said it would.
She was not in position. She had known she might not be — had flagged it as a risk in her pre-match preparation and not fully solved the problem — and the consequence was a two-for-one trade that cost her team an early objective. She processed this in the half-second between the play ending and the next decision point: what happened, why it happened, what she would do differently, and how quickly she could implement the change.
The answer to the last question was: now.
She adjusted her pathing on the next rotation, pulling the ward coverage tighter, accepting a slightly reduced offensive presence in exchange for the information buffer she needed. It was the river approach she had worked out in the practice room — not perfect, not yet, but functional. A direction.
From across the room, she heard nothing. No comment, no callout, no acknowledgment. The men's team continued playing.
Somehow, this felt like a response.
---
Minute fourteen came fast.
She had been tracking Ethan's movement pattern across the first thirteen minutes — not consciously, exactly, more in the way that she tracked everything when she was in a match: accumulating data without deciding to, building a picture that she could pull from when she needed it. At minute thirteen-forty-two, the picture told her something.
Not with certainty. With probability — the specific quality of a read that was maybe seventy percent, the kind where you could commit or hold back and both choices were defensible. She had been working on trusting the seventy percent reads. She had been working on it since the day she wrote *trust the read* in her notes and Zara had said the same thing three minutes later.
She trusted it.
"Top, incoming," she called, eight seconds before the gank arrived.
Her top laner moved. Not far enough — the gank still connected, still cost them something — but less than it would have. A fifty percent outcome instead of a thirty percent one. Improvement, measurable, in the right direction.
Across the room, she heard a brief pause in the rhythm of Ethan's keyboard.
One beat. Maybe less. Then it continued.
She filed this away and kept playing.
---
The play at minute twenty-one was not planned.
This was the thing about the best plays: they came from the accumulated weight of every decision before them, the specific configuration of information and position and probability that suddenly resolved into something that was obvious only because of everything that had preceded it. She had not planned to sacrifice her position for the vision line. She had simply seen it — the window, the cost, the outcome if she moved correctly — and moved.
Her team got the steal.
Not the objective — the men's team secured that, as they secured most things they decided to secure, with the efficiency of a unit that had been playing together long enough to stop thinking about coordination and simply do it. But the steal was worth something. Not the game, not the momentum, just a single moment that said: we are here, we are paying attention, and we know how to take what you leave.
In the post-play silence, Lyra heard Kai say something under his breath to the player beside him. She couldn't make out the words. She heard the tone: surprised.
The match ended at minute thirty-four. Men's team victory, clear margin on the objective score, the kind of result that the numbers made look more decisive than the match had felt from the inside.
From the inside, it had felt closer than the score.
She was not sure if that was accurate or if she wanted it to be accurate. Both possibilities were information.
---
The debrief was brief — ten minutes, both teams in the shared space, Coach Yeon and Marcus alternating observations. Lyra listened with the particular attention she brought to feedback: not defensive, not immediately accepting, just taking it in and setting it aside to evaluate later when the emotional weight of the match had settled.
Ethan spoke once.
He said: "The play at twenty-one was a correct read on our rotation gap. The execution had a two-second delay that cost the full objective. Fix the delay."
He said it to the room, not specifically to Lyra. It was a tactical observation, delivered in the same tone he used for everything: flat, accurate, without editorial.
Lyra did not respond. She wrote it down.
Afterward, the teams separated. Equipment packed up, the particular dispersal of people who had been in a concentrated shared state and were now returning to their individual orbits. Lyra packed her station methodically, taking the time she usually took, not rushing.
When she turned to leave, Ethan was also leaving.
They ended up in the corridor at the same time — not together, just occupying the same space at the same moment, the way two people in a building sometimes converged on the same hallway without planning to. She was aware of him to her left, moving at the same pace, the particular quality of his presence that she had been aware of since the first day and had not found a useful way to categorize.
They walked the length of the corridor in silence.
At the junction where the hallway split — her team's practice room to the right, the staircase to the left — they diverged without a word. She turned right. She assumed he turned left. She did not look back to confirm.
She sat down at her station and pulled up the match footage.
---
The play at minute fourteen was the first timestamp she went to.
She watched it three times: once for the overall picture, once focusing on her own positioning, once watching Ethan's side of the match — what he had done when the gank didn't land the way he intended, how quickly he had pivoted, the specific adjustment he had made that recovered most of the value from a play that had been partially read.
Fast. Very fast. And the adjustment had been better than the original.
She had seen this in his footage the night before, and seeing it in a match she had actually played felt different. More real. More like information she was responsible for doing something with.
She moved to minute twenty-one.
Watched it once.
The play looked different from the outside than it had felt from the inside — smaller, more chaotic, the kind of thing that might not have been remarkable at all if it hadn't worked. She could see the decision point clearly: the moment she had processed the read and committed. And she could see, in the frozen frame of the steal landing, that the men's team had been caught slightly off-balance.
Not much. Just enough.
She thought about what Ethan had said: *correct read, two-second delay, fix the delay.*
No praise. No acknowledgment that the read itself had been unusual. Just the gap between the correct decision and the full execution of it, identified and labeled and handed back to her as a problem to solve.
This was, she thought, exactly what she had needed to hear. Not because it was kind — it wasn't, particularly — but because it was accurate. He had watched the play and told her the truth of it, and the truth of it was useful, and useful was what she was here for.
She had not expected to feel that way about feedback from him. She had expected to feel resistant. She was filing the gap between expectation and reality under things to think about later, the same file she had been adding to since the first day she arrived at ZNT.
The file was getting full.
She set the footage to run from the beginning of the match and settled back in her chair to watch.
At some point during the second viewing, she became aware of something she had not been looking for.
The play at minute twenty-one — the one she had made without planning, the one that had worked, the one that Ethan had commented on in the debrief — was the play she had been most satisfied with in the entire match. Not because of the outcome, or because it had been noticed. Because it had been right. It had been the correct read, translated into action, executed at the speed the moment demanded.
Almost at the speed.
Fix the delay.
She rewound the clip. Watched it again. Felt the two-second gap between decision and movement, the specific friction that still existed between knowing and doing.
She wanted to fix it.
This was not new — she always wanted to fix the gaps in her game. But there was a quality to the wanting right now that was slightly different from the usual drive to improve. She was thinking about a specific person watching her do it right. A specific person watching her close the delay and execute the play the way it was supposed to be executed, fast and clean and without the gap.
She stared at the frozen frame on her monitor.
This was new information. Inconvenient information. The kind of information that, once you had it, you could not pretend you didn't.
She rewound the clip one more time.
Fix the delay, she told herself.
She meant the one in the footage.
She was not entirely sure that was the only one she meant.
