She had not planned to go to the laboratory.
This was what she told herself for approximately forty minutes while she lay in her bed and looked at the ceiling and listened to the city making its late-night sounds and thought about nothing specific, which was to say she thought about one thing and refused to name it. The phantom smoke did not come. The vial was on her nightstand and she had not needed it, which she recognized as data of a particular kind.
At one in the morning she got up, dressed, and went.
The side entrance was dark and quiet. She let herself in with the key she no longer thought of as unfamiliar — it had become a familiar weight, the specific shape of this particular brass, the way the tumbler released at exactly this angle — and stepped into the laboratory.
The lamps were lit at the low working level. Raymond was at the far bench, which she had expected. He was not working, which she had not expected.
He was sitting on the stool at his bench with a sheet of blank paper in front of him and a pen in his hand, and the pen had not touched the paper. She could see, from across the room, that the paper was blank — completely blank, not a note, not a calculation, not even an absent-minded line. Just blank paper and a pen that was not writing.
She had never seen him doing nothing before. In all the weeks they had worked together, he had not once been in the laboratory without working. Even in their conversations, even in their sessions, his hands were generally occupied with something — a tool, a flask, a pen making notes, something that maintained the connection between his attention and a concrete object in the world.
The blank paper was a kind of landscape she did not have a map for.
She crossed to her bench and took the governor mechanism from her coat pocket — she had carried it home the previous evening for no reason she could account for and now she had brought it back — and set it on the bench in front of her and looked at it.
"You told them that," he said.
His voice was different. Not different in a way she could have easily described to someone who hadn't spent three months learning his vocal register — slightly lower, slightly less precisely controlled, as though the control was still there but operating at less than full capacity.
"Yes," she said.
"About the project. That I was the architect."
"You are the architect. Of the parts I described."
"Voss said something similar once." The pen touched the paper — not writing, just resting there, the way you rested a tool on a surface when you were not using it but wanted it within reach. "Before a committee. He said I was the conceptual engine of his entire research program. He said it in the context of explaining why my contributions needed to be folded into his institutional framework for the good of the science." A pause. "The committee found this very reasonable."
She turned the governor mechanism over in her hands. The weight of it was familiar, the specific balance of brass and steel, the tiny imperfections in the surface that were not imperfections but the record of very careful work — the traces of how it had been made.
"What happened after," she said.
He was quiet for long enough that she thought he might not answer. Then: "I filed a complaint. The Academy reviewed it for six weeks and returned a finding that the research attribution was a matter of professional interpretation and that no formal misconduct had occurred." Another pause. "Voss gave a speech at the annual meeting three weeks later. He thanked his students and colleagues. He mentioned me by name as an example of the kind of promising young researcher that the Academy needed to cultivate. The audience applauded."
The pen moved. Not writing — a single line, barely there, the movement of a hand that needed to make a mark to confirm it was still capable of making marks.
"I left the Academy that afternoon," he said. "I took what I could carry and left what I couldn't and found the building I'm currently in and have not been back."
"The empty laboratory," she said. The compound from the integration test, the room he had gone to with the pen that knew nothing had happened yet. She understood now what she had been receiving in that test — not just the emotional residue of the object but specifically his emotional residue, the morning after, the clearing out.
"Yes."
She set down the governor mechanism.
"Raymond." She had not planned to use his name first, the way he had used her name first on the steps. It came out before the plan was made. "I am not Voss."
"I know," he said.
"I know you know. I'm saying it anyway." She looked at him across the two benches, the distance of the laboratory at night with the lamps turned low. "Because the knowing and the believing are different operations and they don't always run simultaneously."
He looked at her. The pen was still.
"What you said tonight," he said, "was harder to receive than I expected. Not because it was wrong." The blank paper in front of him had one line on it now, a single mark that meant nothing and everything. "Because it was right, and I didn't know what to do with someone being right about me in public without a price attached."
She sat with this. The laboratory was warm and quiet, the distillation apparatus covered for the night, the machine taking its incremental shape at the end of the bench. Outside the windows Florence was deep in the middle hours, past midnight and short of dawn.
"There is no price," she said.
"I know." He looked at the blank paper. "That's the part I'm still — recalibrating."
The word she had used the previous week, about the Bruni documents, returned to her now from his mouth, and she recognized in it something deliberate — he was using her word, returning it to her, in the specific way that people used things someone had given them when they wanted to acknowledge the giving without making a ceremony of it.
They sat in the laboratory in the middle of the night with the distance between their benches and the blank paper with one line on it and all the things that had accumulated in the air between them since a night three months ago when she had knocked on his door and he had said four words and closed it.
"I should —" she began.
"Stay," he said. Not a demand. Not quite a question. The word that lived between the two of them, the word that had been building since the first time she had stayed longer than she planned.
She stayed.
They did not work. They sat at their respective benches in companionable silence with the governor mechanism and the blank paper and the low lamps, and she did not know if she was waiting for something or simply in the presence of something that did not require waiting, and at some point the silence became so complete and so present that it had its own weight, its own texture, its own way of being inhabited.
At three o'clock she stood and put on her coat.
At the side entrance, in the doorway, she stopped.
"Raymond."
He had followed her, which she had not expected. He was standing in the laboratory doorway, not close, giving her the space of the corridor between them.
"I will not let it happen," she said. "What happened with Voss. I will not let it happen to this work or to you."
He looked at her for a long moment. Then: "I know."
And for the first time, she heard in those two words not the acknowledgment of something he understood intellectually, but the texture of something he was, slowly and with great difficulty, beginning to believe.
