The Crystal Palace was exactly what it claimed to be.
She had seen illustrations — everyone in Florence had seen illustrations, the building had been generating press since its announcement — but illustrations did not prepare you for the specific quality of glass and iron at this scale, the way the structure gathered light from all directions and held it differently than stone held it, diffused and present throughout rather than absorbed and returned. Walking into it for the first time for the venue setup, she understood why it had become the symbol it had become: it was a building that made the argument that precision and vision and the patient work of craft could produce something that felt, from the inside, like being inside an idea made physical.
Raymond walked beside her with his compound cases and looked at the ceiling.
"Paxton designed it in nine days," he said.
"I know."
"The construction took seventeen weeks."
"I know." She looked at him. "You've been reading about it."
"I read about things I'm going to spend significant time in." He looked at the cast iron columns, the ridge-and-furrow glazing, the specific engineering of a building that had solved problems no one had solved before by treating them as problems worth solving. "It's good work."
"It is."
Their exhibition space was in the third gallery — a slot that had initially seemed like a middle position until she had walked the space and understood that the third gallery was where the light came from the north-facing glass, which was cooler and more consistent than the south-facing sections, which was better for the compound's performance requirements. She had not arranged this. Raymond had arranged this, three months ago, when he filed the exhibition application and had somehow known to specify north-facing when she had not yet known to specify it.
She had not asked him about this at the time. She was asking him about it now, in her head, while they set up the exhibition space, adding it to the long list of things he had prepared before she knew they needed preparing.
Setup took four hours. The machine had to be positioned precisely — the compound housing oriented toward the audience position, the detection array calibrated to the specific acoustic and olfactory properties of the gallery space, the governor mechanism adjusted for the humidity differential between the laboratory and the Crystal Palace's internal environment. This last adjustment was one she had not anticipated and Raymond had prepared for: he had measured the Crystal Palace's internal humidity during a public preview day six weeks ago and had built the adjustment into the governor's secondary calibration range.
She stood with a humidity gauge and confirmed that the adjustment was correct.
He was watching her from the compound station.
"Six weeks ago," she said.
"The specification window for the adjustment was narrow," he said. "I needed the actual measurement, not an estimate."
She set down the gauge. She had been cataloguing all of it — all the preparations made before she knew they were needed, all the problems solved before she identified them as problems — and the catalogue had a pattern. The pattern was: a person who had learned, over years of working alone without institutional support, to solve problems that no one else was going to solve, and who had extended that practice, without fanfare or announcement, to include her problems alongside his own.
She was still processing what to do with this.
At three o'clock Voss arrived.
Not at their exhibition space — he materialized in the third gallery moving between spaces with the specific quality of an Academy senior figure doing what Academy senior figures did at the Exposition, which was observe and be observed and make it clear by their presence that the Academy's attention was present and evaluating. He was older than she had expected from the article photographs — late sixties, a slight figure, with the posture of someone who had been the tallest person in many rooms and had organized his carriage accordingly.
He stopped at the edge of their exhibition space.
Raymond was at the compound station. He was facing away from the gallery entrance, adjusting the final calibration on the compound housing. He did not turn around.
She was not certain whether he had heard Voss arrive. She was fairly certain he had — he heard most things — and was making a choice about the turn.
Voss looked at the machine. He looked at it with the specific quality of someone who understood what they were looking at — not the general public's appreciative bewilderment, not the journalist's descriptive distance, but the actual technical recognition of a person who had been working in the same field for forty years and was looking at someone else's solution to problems he had been thinking about for all of that time.
His expression, in that moment, was not contempt and not resentment. It was something she had not expected: a kind of terrible recognition. He was looking at the machine the way people sometimes looked at the work of someone they had been wrong about.
He looked at Raymond's back. Raymond continued adjusting the calibration without turning.
Then Voss turned and walked away down the gallery.
She crossed to Raymond. He had finished the calibration and was making a note in the technical log.
"He was here," she said.
"I know."
She looked at him. He was writing in the log with the careful penmanship of a man who was putting his full attention somewhere controllable. She waited.
"He looked at the machine," she said. "He understood what it was."
"I know that too."
She put her hand on his arm. Not a gesture of comfort — a gesture of presence, the same quality as his hand on her back at the masquerade, the gesture that said *I am here* without saying anything else. He stopped writing. Looked at her hand. Then looked at her.
"Look at me," she said. "Not at him."
He looked at her.
"Tomorrow is about the work," she said. "The day after tomorrow is about us. In that order."
She could see him hear this — see the specific processing of it, the integration of the statement into whatever internal architecture was managing the competing pressures of Voss's presence and the Exposition and the four days and everything that had accumulated since the newspaper article.
"After tomorrow," he said.
"After tomorrow."
They finished the setup as the Crystal Palace's natural light began to change with the approach of evening — the glass shifting from white-gold to amber-gold, the whole interior warming as the sun moved around to its western angle. The machine sat in its exhibition position and looked exactly like what it was: the work of two people who had been paying complete attention for a very long time.
Outside the Crystal Palace the city was going into its evening mode and the air had the specific cold of Florence in the last days before winter committed to itself. She buttoned her coat and stood on the steps while Raymond locked the exhibition cases.
When he came out, he stood beside her. Florence in the early evening, the Crystal Palace behind them, the sound of the city at the hour when it belonged to itself.
He took her hand.
Not tentatively — the way he took it the week before, the simple gesture of someone who had decided and was doing it. She felt the warmth of his hand, the specific warmth of him, and thought: tomorrow. And after tomorrow.
They stood on the Crystal Palace steps with the city moving around them and the machine inside behind them and did not speak for a while, which was correct, and eventually she said: "We should go. We both need sleep."
"We both need sleep," he agreed.
Neither of them moved for another minute.
Then they walked down the steps into the city, together, toward whatever came next.
