The evening of the second day began with the Crystal Palace's closing announcement — three bells at five o'clock, the signal for exhibitors to secure their installations and visitors to begin their egress — and ended, for Adeline and Raymond, in the third gallery after the last of the public had left, in the specific quality of a space that had been full of people and was now returning to itself.
They secured the machine together. The protective cases locked, the compound series in their transport containers, the documentation sealed for overnight storage. The routine had the ease of something done many times and the specific quality of this version of it: doing it in the Crystal Palace rather than the laboratory, doing it at the end of a day that had contained Auguste and Leonard and Viviane's recognition and everything else the second day had held.
When the cases were secured she sat at the equipment table.
He sat at the compound station, which was on the other side of the machine from her — the natural position, the working geometry, the arrangement that had organized them for months. She looked at him across the space and thought about all the times she had looked at him across exactly this kind of space: across the bench in the laboratory, across the machine in its various stages of completion, across the distance of a room that had become familiar in the specific way rooms became familiar when you spent significant portions of your life in them.
He was looking at her.
Not the reading look. The other look — the fully present one, the one that had arrived in Ch.10 and had been becoming more itself ever since.
"You went to see Auguste alone," he said.
His voice was the even voice, the factual voice. Not accusation. Observation.
"I told you before I went," she said.
"Yes."
The gallery was quiet around them. The Crystal Palace's evening light — different from its morning light and its afternoon light, flatter and more diffuse, the light of a space winding down — lay across the sealed cases and the equipment table and the distance between the compound station and where she was sitting.
"I went alone," she said. "I told you before I went. Those are two separate things."
"Yes," he said again.
She looked at him. He was giving her the space to say what was there without filling the space with what he was also carrying, which was his version of care, which she had learned to recognize as the specific way he held things open.
"I knew before I left that I was doing the old thing," she said. "Going to the hard thing alone. I noticed it. I told you anyway. That was as far as I could manage."
"I know," he said. "I'm not — I'm not asking you to have managed differently." He paused. The compound station had a glass flask on it that he had been using for the morning's calibration, and he turned it in his hands in the way he turned things when he was thinking through something that had a shape he was still finding. "I'm asking about the after. After you came back."
"The after was fine," she said. "The after was better than I expected."
"I know the after was fine. I read the after on you when you came in." Another pause. "I'm asking about why you came back early. And about what it felt like to not need the vial."
She looked at him. The question was not about information — he had the information, he had read it from her when she walked into the Crystal Palace. The question was about whether she was going to tell him about it, which was a question about whether she was going to bring him into the thing that had happened rather than carrying it as a private thing.
"I told him," she said. "About why I thought he answered the questions. Not just the obvious reason — the financial support. The other reason underneath it. The way that a significant act can become a kind of claim." She looked at the flask turning in his hands. "He listened to it. He said it was more generous than he deserved. I said it was accurate." A pause. "He told me again that he went back by choice. Not because of me — because he chose to. I heard it differently this time."
"Differently how?"
"The first time he said it — years ago, and then again a few weeks ago when you said the same thing, essentially — I heard it and I understood it and it didn't land in the place where the wound was. It landed above the wound. The processing was correct but it was surface processing." She looked at him. "This morning it landed in the wound itself. I don't know what changed. Maybe it's the work we've been doing. Maybe it's having heard it from you first, in a different context. Maybe it's something else entirely." A pause. "But it was different."
Raymond set down the flask.
"The phantom smoke came once," she said. "I let it come and it went. I didn't use the vial." She looked at her hands on the equipment table. "That was the first time."
"I know," he said. Quietly. "You told me this morning."
"I'm telling you again because I want you to understand what it means. It means the work — the calibration sessions, the counterformula, all of it — it's doing what it was supposed to do. And that means —" She stopped.
"It means you don't need the counterformula," he said. "You have the pathway now. It's yours."
"Yes." She looked at him. "I wanted you to know that. I wanted to say it here, in this room, not in the laboratory. Because this is where you heard it the first time — where the machine first worked."
The gallery was very quiet. The Crystal Palace was settling into its evening mode, the building's sounds changing quality as the public left and the institutional activity quieted.
He looked at her across the sealed cases and the equipment table and all the space between the compound station and where she was sitting, which was the same distance it had been since the beginning and was also, in every way that mattered, smaller.
"Thank you," he said.
She stood. "We should lock up."
"Yes."
But neither of them moved for a moment. The gallery held them in its quiet — the space where the machine had first worked and where sixty-three people had been reached and where Viviane had worn gray and Voss had received his answer and Leonard had folded his piece of paper and all the things of the past two days had happened.
"Raymond."
"Yes."
"After the Exposition closes. I want to have the conversation we haven't had yet. About the article. About the beat. About all of it." She looked at him. "Properly. With time and no deadline."
He looked at her steadily. The fully present expression. "Yes," he said. "After the Exposition."
They locked up and left the Crystal Palace and walked together through the Florence evening, and the city was the city and the air was cold and they did not hold hands on the walk back because the evening had a different quality than the evening after setup, the quality of something that had been said rather than something being said, and that quality required a different kind of walking: side by side, present, moving toward the same place at the same pace.
