The fragment arrived on the cliff path.
He had been on the cliff path every morning for two weeks. The walk had become the start of the day in the way that things became the start of the day when they contained something irreplaceable: the specific quality of her on the path, the dawn arriving at the viewpoint, the return that sharpened the attention for everything after it.
They were at the lower section of the path, below the viewpoint, where the cliff began to rise and the wind picked up, when it arrived.
Not vision: weather. The specific shift in what he was receiving. He stopped walking.
Wind. Not the sea wind -- a different wind, dry and cold and carrying nothing from the ocean. The sound of it was specific: not the wide-register sound of coastal wind but something narrower, moving through something that channeled it. Rain, somewhere below the sound of the wind. And his hands.
He looked at his hands. They were at his sides. In the fragment they were -- not at his sides. Reaching.
It lasted three seconds. Then the path, the morning, the coastal wind, the sea below.
She had stopped two steps ahead of him. She was looking back.
"Tell me," she said.
He told her: the wind, the sound of it, the rain below. His hands reaching. Three seconds. Clearer than the last three.
She listened without moving. When he finished she was quiet for a long time -- not the working-out quiet but the tracking quiet, the quality of someone cross-referencing against a data set they had been maintaining.
She said: "That's the fourth fragment."
"Yes."
She turned back to the path. She began walking, and he walked beside her, and she talked while she walked -- not to him, exactly, to the problem she had been working on.
She said: "The fourth fragment is significant because of what it defines."
He listened.
"Each fragment is a piece of a probable event," she said. "Individually they tell you almost nothing. Collectively they describe the conditions. The mist smell from the first: an environment without salt air, inland or enclosed. The grey sky from the second: overcast, diffuse light, no direction. The wind sound from this morning: channeled, not open -- through a structure or a confined space. Rain. Your hands reaching."
She was not speaking quickly. She had the pace of someone who had been thinking about this for a long time and was now saying it out loud because the time for saying it had arrived.
"The fragments are consistent," she said. "They describe an interior or a semi-enclosed environment. Stone, probably -- the kind of stone that produces the specific quality of cold I described in your first fragment when you told me about it." She paused. "And your hands reaching means -- in the probable future, you're reaching for something."
He walked. He thought about reaching.
"Meridian Point," he said. "The observation station."
She stopped walking.
He stopped beside her. The cliff path ran ahead of them. The sea was below. The morning was very clear.
"The observation station is partially enclosed," he said. "Stone. The roof has gaps -- rain comes through in certain areas. The wind channels through the western opening." He paused. "I drew it. In the sketchbook. I've been inside it."
She looked at him. She was doing the assessment he had seen her do with significant information: not reacting, processing.
"That's consistent with the fragments," she said.
"What happens there," he said. It was not a question.
"I don't know the event," she said carefully. "The fragments don't give me that. They give me conditions." She paused. "But I've been trying to understand what would need to be present at Meridian Point for -- " She stopped.
He said: "Tell me.
They sat down.
There was a section of the cliff path where the rock formation provided a natural seat, wide enough for two people. He had noticed it before. She sat down and he sat beside her and they were at height, with the sea below and the city behind them and the morning clear in all directions.
She said: "I've been researching the mechanism of the probability shift. What conditions change the path from A to B." She looked at the horizon. "Celeste's research identified the fork point: a decision. A significant one. But research doesn't tell me what the decision is -- it only tells me that its presence changes the path." She paused. "I've been trying to work backward from what path B looks like to understand what the decision involves."
He waited.
"Path B," she said, "involves the two of us at Meridian Point. In the fragment conditions. But the fragment you're experiencing is from path A. Which means -- in the current probable future, you're at Meridian Point in circumstances that produce those fragments." She paused. "But the Temporal Artifact photograph shows you at Meridian Point in different circumstances. Different season, same location."
He thought about this. "The photograph is from path B."
"Yes." She looked at the sea. "The photograph is from a future where something has been resolved that is currently unresolved. The fragment is from a future where it hasn't been."
He sat with the specific precision of what she had just said.
He said: "And the resolution."
"Yes," she said. "That's the decision. The fork point." She was quiet for a moment. Then, quietly but directly: "I don't want to lose you. I have been working on this for a long time, and the working on it has helped, and you are here, and the field is harmonizing, and those things change the probability. But they don't resolve the fork. The fork requires -- " She stopped.
He said: "Requires what?"
She looked at him. The amber-brown eyes with the full quality of their attention.
"I don't want to lose you," she said again. "That's the thing I know. The resolution -- is in the direction of that."
He understood what she was saying.
He sat with it for a long time. The sea was below. The sky was clear. The cliff wind moved around them.
"I'm not going to be lost," he said. "I intend to be here."
She looked at him. Something in her face shifted -- not dramatically, in the specific way of someone who has been holding a shape for a very long time and has just been given a reason to let it settle.
"I know," she said. "That's why the field is changing."
She stood up. She brushed her coat. She began walking back toward the viewpoint.
He walked beside her, and neither of them said anything for a while, and the morning was the morning, and the thing between them had been spoken around without being fully named, and that was enough for right now. More than enough.
At the viewpoint she stopped.
The dawn was further along now -- they had taken longer on the path than usual, because of the sitting and the talking. The sea was lit, the light coming from the east, and the city below was fully awake.
She was holding the pocket watch.
She had taken it out -- he did not know when, he had not seen her take it out -- and she was holding it in her open palm. Not gripping it. Holding it the way you held something you were thinking about rather than something you were using.
He looked at the watch. The stopped face. The specific quality of the stopped hands.
"You said once," he said, "that you didn't know what triggered it to restart."
"Yes."
"Do you have a better sense now?"
She looked at the watch for a long time. "I think," she said carefully, "that it stops when a significant Tomorrow Memory arrives. A large one, one that marks a specific probable future. And I think it restarts -- " She paused. "I think it restarts when the probable future becomes the actual one. When what was carried as memory becomes lived experience."
He looked at the stopped hands.
"Not long now," she said. It was not a prediction. It was an observation about where they were in a sequence she could see more clearly than he could.
She put the watch back in her coat pocket. She turned toward the path back to the city.
"Come on," she said. "The archive opens at nine."
He followed her down the path. He walked beside her through the residential streets toward the city center, and the morning had the quality of all their mornings now, which was ordinary and specific and entirely particular to this city and these two people, and he thought about the watch and what it was waiting for and how close that might be.
He thought: *not long now* was not the same as *soon.* It was more precise than soon. It was a spatial observation rather than a temporal one: they were not far from the threshold. They were approaching it. They were already in the approach, had been in it for some time, and the approach was almost complete.
The archive that morning had a different quality.
Not dramatic -- he would not have been able to explain it to someone who had not spent months in the building. Something about the air, the specific quality of attention in the space. As if the morning's conversation on the cliff had been imported into the archive along with both of them.
She worked. He worked. At eleven she brought the water.
She set it down. She did not go immediately back to the desk. She stood for a moment near the table.
'I want to say something,' she said.
He looked up.
'About what I said on the cliff.' She was looking at the desk surface. 'I've been careful about the timing of things. I've believed very strongly in the timing.' She paused. 'But I want you to know that the carefulness is not the same as uncertainty. I'm not managing the timing because I'm not sure. I'm managing it because I know how these things go wrong when they're rushed.'
He looked at her.
'I'm not rushing anything,' he said.
'I know.' She looked at him. 'I wanted you to know that the waiting is not about the answer. The answer has been the same for a long time. It's about the form.' She paused. 'The right form makes the answer real in a way that -- persists. That doesn't require revisiting.'
He thought about the right form. He thought about the grandmother's journal and what she had written about the moment: *the reality arrived and it was larger than I had remembered. And much better.*
He said: 'I understand the distinction.'
She nodded. She went back to the desk.
He looked at his hands. He thought about the fragments: the reaching. He thought about the fork point she had described: a decision, in the direction of what she knew. He thought about not rushing and about the difference between rushing and being ready.
He thought: I am ready.
He thought: she knows that. That's why we're at this stage of the timing rather than an earlier one.
He picked up his notebook. He went back to work. The afternoon was the afternoon. He was in it, building the record, one ordinary day at a time.
Clara came by the archive that afternoon with a print.
She had developed it specifically, she said, because she wanted their input on the framing. It was one of the archive interior photographs: the reading table and the desk, both occupied, in the specific afternoon light that came through the tall windows.
He recognized it immediately. He was in the photograph -- the line of his shoulders at the reading table, the notebooks, the working position. She was at the desk -- her posture, the pen, the two drawings on the side.
Neither of them was looking at the camera. Both of them were working.
Clara set the print on the reading table between them.
'For the documentary,' she said. 'The archive section. I wanted to show what it looked like.' She paused. 'What it actually looks like.'
He looked at the photograph. He looked at the quality of two people in the same space, each absorbed in their own work, and the specific quality of the space itself -- the light, the organization, the particular arrangement that had accumulated over three months.
The photograph looked like what it was: a space that had been used well, by people who knew what they were doing, for a long time. And a more recent layer on top of that, which was the specific quality of two people who had been in this space together long enough to have become part of its character.
He said: 'It's good.'
Liora was looking at the photograph with the quality of someone seeing something from the outside that they had been inside. She said: 'Yes. It is.' She picked it up. She looked at it for a long moment. Then she put it beside the two drawings on the desk.
Three things now: the clock tower drawing, the sketch of her at the desk, and the photograph of both of them in the archive.
Clara looked at the arrangement on the desk and smiled the small precise smile she wore when something was going correctly.
'Good,' she said. She took her bag and left.
The archive settled back into its afternoon quality.
He thought about the three things on the desk. He thought about what they were collectively: a record of being here, in this place, together. A record that had been accumulating since he arrived, in different forms -- his drawings, the clock logs, Owen's field data, the photograph. All of it pointing to the same fact.
They were here. They had been here, together, for three months. The city had registered it. The clocks had registered it. The photograph registered it.
He thought: I am part of this place now.
He thought: she is part of what this place is to me.
He thought: we are approaching something and we are approaching it correctly and not much longer now.
He called Owen that evening.
He told Owen about the fourth fragment: the wind sound, the rain, the reaching. Owen listened with the focused attention he brought to data.
'That's a fourth data point,' Owen said. 'In a pattern that has been building since you arrived.' He paused. 'Each fragment is more specific than the last. The probability is consolidating around a specific scenario.'
'Meridian Point,' Elias said. 'The observation station. The conditions match.'
'You've been to the observation station.'
'Yes. The enclosure is consistent with the fragments. The wind channels through the western opening. The roof has gaps that would let rain through in specific areas.'
Owen was quiet for a moment. 'What's the condition of the building?'
'Old. 1930s construction. It's been abandoned for decades.' He paused. 'I've drawn it. Structurally it's sound but neglected.'
'And the photograph from the Temporal Artifact,' Owen said. 'The one that shows you at Meridian Point six months from now. Was it at the observation station?'
He thought about the photograph. The figure standing in the fog. The observation station in the background. 'Adjacent to it. Outside.'
'Outside versus inside,' Owen said slowly. 'Two different versions of you at the same location. One inside the structure, in the conditions the fragments describe. One outside, in the fog, in the Temporal Artifact.' He paused. 'Two versions of Meridian Point. Two probability paths.'
'Yes,' Elias said.
Owen was quiet for a while.
Then: 'The path that produces the Temporal Artifact -- that's path B. Outside, in the fog, the photograph records it as a stable future. The path that produces the fragments -- that's path A. Inside, in the conditions.' He paused. 'Path A and path B are both futures. But path A is the one the current trajectory leads to unless something changes.'
'Something is changing,' Elias said. 'She's been working on it. The field is harmonizing.'
'The harmonization helps,' Owen said. 'But you said she described a fork point. A decision.' He paused. 'The harmonization alone won't cross the fork. The decision will.'
Elias looked at the harbor lights through the window. He thought about the fork point. He thought about what she had said: *in the direction of what I know.*
'I understand what the decision is,' he said.
'I know,' Owen said. 'I've understood for a while.' A pause. 'I think you're ready to make it.'
'I've been ready,' he said.
'Then why haven't you?'
He thought about this carefully. 'Because she has been managing the timing,' he said. 'And I trust her timing. And the timing is almost complete.'
Owen was quiet for a moment.
'That,' he said, 'is a very different answer than I would have expected from you three months ago.'
'I know,' Elias said.
He said good night. He went to bed. He thought about timing and readiness and the specific quality of being prepared for something without rushing it, which was something he had learned in Grayhaven and which he thought he would carry with him for the rest of his life regardless of where he was. He thought about readiness and what it felt like from the inside. He thought about it not as an abstract quality but as a specific state: the state of having understood something fully enough that the understanding was stable, that it did not require maintenance or revisiting, that it simply existed as part of the structure you carried. He was ready. He had been ready for some time. He was waiting for the timing, which was her domain and which he trusted completely, to arrive at the correct moment. The moment was close. He could feel its approach in the specific way you felt the approach of weather: not visible yet but felt, real, arriving from the direction things arrived from when they had been building toward you for a long time.
