Monday morning at Skyline Magazine smelled like burnt coffee and deadline panic, a combination Julian found almost aggressively unpleasant after three centuries spent in an office where the air itself was calibrated for optimal cognitive function.
He stood in the elevator lobby in his charcoal suit, tablet tucked discreetly inside his jacket where it would register to any mortal eye as nothing more than an unusually thin leather portfolio, and reviewed his cover documentation one final time. Julian Vance. Senior Communications Consultant, transferred from the regional office. Seven years of fabricated employment history, complete with references who did not technically exist but who would, if anyone bothered to call, answer the phone with entirely convincing enthusiasm.
The Bureau's forgery department, Julian had to admit, did excellent work.
He stepped off the elevator into an open-plan office that seemed to operate on a philosophy of barely contained chaos -- stacks of proof pages leaning at unsafe angles, someone's abandoned lunch congealing on a shared table, a whiteboard covered in deadlines crossed out and rewritten so many times it had achieved a kind of fossilized illegibility. Julian's eye twitched, once, at the sight of it.
Chaotic, he thought. Unstructured.
He found his assigned desk -- positioned, with what he chose to interpret as fate's dry sense of humor, directly across from Chloe Bennett's -- and set his portfolio down with the precise, economical movements of a man arranging surgical instruments.
Chloe looked up from her monitor, took one look at him, and said, with no discernible surprise, "Oh, great. It's you."
"Good morning to you as well," Julian said.
"I thought maybe I'd imagined the whole 'new hire' thing. Hoped, more accurately." She returned her attention to her screen, though Julian noted -- filed away, in fact, with the same clinical interest he applied to any new data point -- that her eyes flicked back toward him twice more within the next thirty seconds.
"I assure you, I am quite real," Julian said, settling into his chair with the posture of a man who had never once slouched.
"Unfortunately," Chloe muttered, not quite under her breath.
Before Julian could formulate a response calibrated to this specific tone of dry hostility, a woman in her fifties with sharp reading glasses and an even sharper blazer appeared at the edge of the cubicle, clipboard in hand, radiating the particular energy of someone who considered herself both the boss and the fairy godmother of every romantic subplot within a four-block radius.
"Julian!" Mrs. Gable said, extending a hand with the enthusiasm of a woman greeting a long-lost nephew rather than an employee she had met exactly ninety seconds ago via a hiring file. "So glad you could join us. I've heard wonderful things."
"Thank you, Mrs. Gable," Julian said, shaking her hand with the practiced warmth of a man who had shaken approximately four hundred thousand hands across three centuries of matchmaking fieldwork.
"And I see you've already met Chloe." Mrs. Gable's eyes lit up with an expression Julian recognized immediately, having seen its precise cousin on the faces of countless amateur matchmakers throughout history: the unmistakable gleam of a woman who had just spotted an opportunity.
"Briefly," Julian said.
"We haven't met," Chloe said, at the exact same moment, with considerably more emphasis.
Mrs. Gable's gaze bounced between them, delighted by the apparent contradiction. "Well, isn't that interesting. Chloe, why don't you show Julian around the office? Introduce him to everyone. You two seem like you'd get along."
"We seem like we'd -- " Chloe started, then visibly reconsidered arguing with her boss in front of a new hire and settled instead for a tight, professional smile that did not reach her eyes in the slightest. "Sure. Happy to."
Mrs. Gable beamed, patted Julian once on the shoulder as though sealing some invisible contract, and swept off toward her office, already calling out instructions to someone about a deadline.
The moment she was out of earshot, Chloe leaned across the narrow aisle between their desks, dropping her voice to a low, urgent register. "Okay. Look. I don't know what Gable's cooking up in that head of hers, but I want to save you some time and heartbreak, so I'm just going to be very direct with you."
"Please," Julian said. "I appreciate directness."
"Good, because I only have one setting." She glanced around to make sure no one else was listening, then continued, quieter still. "She does this. Constantly. New employee walks in, single, breathing, technically employed -- and within a week she's got some elaborate scheme to set them up with someone. Usually me, because apparently my permanent bachelorette status personally offends her sense of order in the universe."
"I see," Julian said, filing this information away with genuine interest -- not merely professional interest, though he told himself firmly that the distinction did not matter. "And you would prefer I not participate in whatever scheme she is constructing."
"I would prefer," Chloe said, "that you save yourself the trouble. I'm not being modest, okay? I'm not doing the thing where a girl says 'oh, I'm cursed, ha ha' as some kind of ironic self-deprecating bit to make herself seem interesting. I mean it literally. Something happens. Every single time. It's not subtle and it's not metaphorical."
"You mentioned this on Friday," Julian said. "The falling objects."
"Right. And the food poisoning. And the ill-timed lightning. And one memorable incident involving a flock of pigeons that I genuinely do not have the energy to explain before nine a.m." She sat back, crossing her arms, the posture of someone delivering a public service announcement she'd clearly given many times before. "So. Consider this your official orientation warning. Skyline benefits package, building fire exits, and: do not fall for me. I promise it will not end well for you."
Julian studied her for a long moment -- the crossed arms, the flat, matter-of-fact delivery entirely devoid of self-pity, the way she said something that should have sounded absurd with the calm authority of someone reciting a known scientific principle.
Fascinating, he thought again, the word arriving with the same private, professional satisfaction it had carried on the sidewalk two days prior. She speaks of it as fact, not fear. No performance of vulnerability. No attempt to elicit sympathy. Merely a warning, delivered efficiently, once, and then dismissed.
"I appreciate the warning," he said aloud. "I will endeavor not to fall for you."
Something in his tone -- perhaps the faintly amused precision of it -- made her narrow her eyes slightly, as though trying to determine whether he was mocking her.
"Good," she said, after a beat. "Great. Glad we've got that settled." She stood, smoothing her blazer, apparently satisfied that the conversation had reached its natural, professional conclusion. "Come on. I'll show you where the good coffee machine is. The one by Accounting works, technically, but it tastes like it's been personally cursed by someone with worse luck than me."
"I would be very surprised," Julian said, "if such a person existed."
"You'd be surprised," Chloe said, already walking, "how creative the universe gets when it's bored."
He followed her through the maze of cubicles, noting -- again, purely for professional documentation purposes -- the easy, familiar way she navigated the space, greeting colleagues by name, deflecting one enthusiastic question about weekend plans with a joke so smooth it clearly had years of practice behind it. She was, Julian observed, remarkably good at being liked from a comfortable distance. Popular in the way of someone who kept everyone at arm's length with such warmth and humor that most people never noticed the arm's length at all.
Twelve failed matchmaking attempts, Julian thought, watching her wave off yet another colleague's question with an easy laugh. Twelve. And not one of them managed to get past this. Remarkable.
They reached the break room -- a cramped space dominated by a coffee machine that hummed with the ominous energy of equipment several years past its recommended service date -- and Chloe reached for two mugs from the cabinet with the unthinking automaticity of habit.
"Cream, sugar, black, or are you one of those people who drinks it with, like, oat milk and a shot of something pretentious?" she asked, not quite looking at him.
"Black," Julian said. "I appreciate a beverage that does not require embellishment."
"Huh," Chloe said, glancing at him properly now, something almost like reluctant approval flickering across her face. "Okay. Didn't expect that from a guy in a three-piece suit on a Monday."
"People rarely expect what does not fit the pattern they've assigned in advance," Julian said, and immediately regretted how much more personal that sentence sounded than he had intended.
Chloe paused, mug halfway to the machine, and looked at him for a long moment -- longer than the comment strictly warranted. "That's a weirdly deep thing to say about coffee preferences."
"I contain multitudes," Julian said again, the second time in three days he had reached for the exact same unfamiliar phrase, and wondered, briefly and with some discomfort, why it kept presenting itself as the correct response whenever she looked at him like that.
The coffee machine coughed, sputtered, and produced two cups of liquid that smelled, if Julian's centuries of sensory calibration were to be trusted, closer to diesel fuel than to coffee.
"Welcome to Skyline," Chloe said, handing him a mug with the flat delivery of someone presenting a warning label. "Try not to let the coffee or the boss's matchmaking instincts kill you on your first week."
"I will do my best," Julian said, and took a sip, and did an admirable job of not visibly recoiling at the taste, which he privately filed away as one of the more impressive acts of professional composure in his three-hundred-and-twelve-year career.
Chloe watched him not-recoil with the faint, satisfied amusement of someone who had just witnessed a small, private victory.
"You'll do fine here," she said, and there was something almost like approval in it -- brief, guarded, gone as quickly as it had appeared, replaced by the practiced ease of a woman already turning to leave. "Just remember what I said. Keep your distance. I mean it."
She walked off down the hallway, mug in hand, leaving Julian alone with a cup of genuinely terrible coffee and the uncomfortable, entirely unquantifiable sensation that his six-to-eight-business-day timeline had just acquired a complication his tablet had no field for.
He pulled it out anyway, thumb hovering over a blank entry.
FIELD NOTE -- DAY 1, DIRECT CONTACT: Subject maintains consistent behavioral pattern: deflection through humor, explicit pre-emptive warnings regarding romantic risk, comfortable social distance maintained with all colleagues. No signs of loneliness or desire for romantic connection detected in observed behavior.
He hesitated, then typed one more line, more slowly than the rest.
Subject's directness continues to register as --
He stopped. Deleted the word he had been about to write. Retyped it. Deleted it again.
In the end, he closed the file without finishing the sentence, and told himself, with the same brisk confidence that had carried him through nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine successful matches, that whatever he had almost written did not matter in the slightest.
The coffee, he thought, taking one more determined sip and regretting it immediately, was clearly affecting his judgment.
It had nothing at all to do with the way she'd looked at him over the rim of her own cup, like she was trying, despite every warning she'd just given him, to figure out whether he might actually be worth the trouble.
By the time evening settled over Silverwood, Julian had returned to his temporary quarters -- a modest but tastefully appointed apartment the Bureau maintained for exactly this kind of extended fieldwork, all clean lines and unnecessary furniture he had no use for -- and Barnaby had installed himself on the arm of the sofa, ears perked in anticipation of a full debrief.
"So?" Barnaby said. "How'd it go? Did you use the thread yet? Did she scream? People usually scream a little, the first time they see the thread."
"I have not used the thread," Julian said, loosening his tie with the same careful precision he applied to every other action in his life, and setting it across the back of a chair at a perfectly parallel angle. "The thread is not the appropriate tool for initial contact. It requires a stable emotional foundation before deployment, or the bonding sequence risks triggering premature rejection."
"That sounds like something you read in a manual."
"It is something I read in a manual," Julian said. "The manual I wrote. Section four, subsection two: Optimal Sequencing for High-Resistance Subjects."
Barnaby's ears drooped slightly, the universal rabbit expression for I cannot believe I am still listening to this. "Okay, but, like -- in normal words. How'd it go?"
Julian considered the question with more care than it perhaps warranted. He thought of the coffee, the flat warning delivered like a weather report, the way she had looked at him over the rim of her mug with something that was not quite trust but was, perhaps, the very earliest and most fragile precursor to it.
"She warned me not to fall for her," he said finally. "Twice, now. Once on the street, once in the break room."
"And?"
"And it was, on both occasions, delivered with remarkable clarity and complete absence of self-pity," Julian said. "She does not perform vulnerability. She states facts and moves on. It is -- " he paused, searching for the correct clinical term and finding, to his mild irritation, that none of the usual ones fit precisely, " -- efficient."
Barnaby tilted his head, whiskers twitching with the particular curiosity of a creature who had spent several decades watching Julian describe every human emotion in the language of quarterly performance reviews. "You said that weird."
"I did not say it weird. I said it accurately."
"You said it like it was a compliment. You don't usually compliment the humans. You usually just, like, catalog them."
"I am cataloging her," Julian said, a touch more firmly than the statement required. "That is precisely what I am doing. Cataloging. For the purposes of the case."
He crossed to the small kitchenette, retrieved a glass of water he did not technically need to drink, and stood by the window for a long moment, looking out at the wet, glittering sprawl of Silverwood below -- the noise of it, the disorder, the utter absence of any discernible optimization.
Chaotic, he thought, out of habit.
And then, unbidden, a second thought arrived directly behind the first, uninvited and entirely unauthorized by any process Julian recognized as his own: But not unpleasant.
He frowned at the glass in his hand as though it had personally betrayed him.
"You're doing the thing again," Barnaby said from the sofa, not looking up from where he had begun investigating whether the throw pillow was edible.
"I am not doing any thing."
"You get this face. Like you're solving a math problem that keeps changing the answer."
"That," Julian said, setting the glass down with more force than strictly necessary, "is an accurate description of this entire case. Twelve prior attempts, all failed, mechanism of failure unknown, subject actively hostile to the premise of romantic vulnerability. Of course the variables keep shifting. It is a data-poor environment."
"Sure," Barnaby said, in the tone of a creature who did not believe a word of it but had decided, wisely, not to push the matter further tonight.
Julian pulled the tablet from his jacket pocket one final time before retiring for the evening, opening the Bennett file and staring, for longer than was professionally necessary, at the small, stubborn line of unfinished text he had abandoned that afternoon.
Subject's directness continues to register as --
He typed three words, quickly, before he could reconsider them, and closed the file before the System could flag the entry for review.
-- unexpectedly disarming. Continue observation.
Outside, far above the noise and neon of Silverwood, a single star flickered once against the darkening sky -- not scheduled, not calculated, entirely unaccounted for in any celestial almanac Julian had ever consulted -- and then settled back into its ordinary, predictable place among the others.
Julian did not see it. He had already turned away from the window, already reminding himself, with the same brisk confidence that had carried him through nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine successful matches, that six to eight business days remained more than sufficient time to solve one stubborn, unpredictable variable.
He simply needed, he told himself, a better approach.
Before sleep -- a function Julian did not strictly require but had adopted, over the centuries, as a useful ritual for organizing the day's data -- he ran through the mental checklist he applied to every case. Subject's stated preferences: noted. Subject's professional environment: mapped. Subject's primary defense mechanism: humor, deployed with surgical precision, difficult to breach through direct confrontation.
What he needed, he decided, was patience. Not the reckless, headlong momentum that had doomed twelve prior attempts, each one presumably arriving with flowers and grand declarations within the first week, only to be met with catastrophe before the ink on the confession had dried. He would do the opposite. He would become, simply, a fixture -- reliable, unthreatening, present in small, unremarkable increments until the subject's guard lowered itself, gradually, without ever noticing the process at work.
It was, Julian thought, turning off the lamp and settling into a bed he did not technically need, an excellent plan. Measured. Disciplined. Entirely free of the kind of impulsive sentiment that had once cost him fifty years of salary and considerably more of his professional dignity.
He simply needed, he told himself, a better approach.
He had no idea, not yet, how thoroughly and how quickly that approach was about to fail.
