He was, she found, an efficient collaborator: he did not restate things he had understood, did not ask for reassurance, moved forward on the information available and noted clearly what remained unclear. She recognized in this the specific quality of someone whose intelligence was used to working in conditions of incomplete information and who had learned to be useful anyway rather than waiting for certainty.

She added to her respect for him.

At one point, working through the relay architecture documentation, he stopped and looked at her across the table. "How did you learn all this so fast?"

"My mother's notebooks," she said. "She left very good notes."

"She was planning for you."

"She was planning for whoever had the notebooks. She hoped it would be me. She turned out to be right."

He was quiet for a moment. Then: "I'm sorry," he said, "that no one told you earlier. About any of it."

She looked at him. "You didn't know any of it earlier."

"No. But my father did, and I—" He paused. "I let not-knowing be easy for too long. I should have pushed harder."

She thought about what Caelan had said in the first mirror contact: I know this is difficult to accept. And she thought about what it was actually costing Julian to be here, in this room, agreeing to work against his father's design. She thought about the specific quality of the decision he had made on Saturday when she had asked him to choose.

"You're pushing now," she said.

He looked at her, and the expression on his face was complicated — the specific complication of someone who had let themselves not-know for a long time and had now chosen knowing, which was not a comfortable transition. But underneath it something simpler and steadier. "Yes," he said. "I am."

They worked until early evening. When she left, she walked home through the city with the particular quality of focus that came from a day where significant things had happened and been handled, and thought about convergence windows and timing and a Tuesday evening that was also tonight.

She had the access point confirmed. She had Julian in. She had eighteen days.

The convergence window, per the calibration device, was at nine o'clock. She had two hours.

She had dinner with her father — ordinary, performed with her usual competence — and went to her room at eight and sat at her desk and reviewed her questions one more time.

At eight forty-five she put on her coat and walked to the old northern station.

The window was fifteen minutes, as she had predicted from the cycle mapping. Caelan arrived at the zone within the first minute, which meant he had also been tracking the window timing.

She told him about the console.

He was quiet for a long moment.

"You've confirmed the Meridian access point," he said.

"Yes. And I have someone on the Meridian side who can operate it." She paused. "I need to know about the Nocturne access point. Whether you have a path to it. And I need to know about the Nocturne resonance anchor — who they are, what their role in the equation is."

He looked at her steadily. "The Nocturne anchor is not a person," he said. "It's a signature embedded in the resonance records — the frequency pattern that the Nocturne version of the Accord is locked to. It was set when the current configuration was established sixty years ago."

"It doesn't require a living person to input it."

"No. It's already in the system. The override will read it automatically from the records if I can access the console."

She absorbed this. "Then the obstacle on the Nocturne side is purely access."

"Yes. I've been locked out of the console for three years. The authorization requires a senior Veyr signature and Severin has not given me one."

She thought. "Julian has a senior Veyr signature."

Caelan looked at her for a long moment across the shimmer of the zone boundary.

"Julian," he said.

"He's in," she said. "He knows what the mechanism does and he's chosen. He doesn't know about you specifically yet, but I'm going to tell him." She held Caelan's gaze. "He will need to come to Nocturne. Not through a mirror — physically. Through a full convergence."

Another long pause.

"That's possible," Caelan said. "Technically. The full zone at the station will allow physical crossing if the window is stable enough and long enough. I've never brought anyone through, but the mathematics support it."

"Can you make the Nocturne console accessible to someone crossing from Meridian?"

"If I can get to it from the outside and manually override the lock before they arrive — yes." He was thinking; she could see it in the same way she could see Julian thinking, the specific quality of a mind working on the actual problem rather than performing consideration. "It would take me approximately three hours of preparation on the Nocturne side. I would need advance notice of the crossing timing."

"How far in advance?"

"One window before the crossing. Two would be safer."

She nodded. She was doing the timing calculations in her head: the convergence cycle, the ceremony date, the window that would be stable enough for a physical crossing. The longest window in the cycle occurred approximately every fifth day. She had three more such windows before the ceremony.

"The last significant window before the ceremony is three days before it," she said. "Is that enough time?"

"It is if everything works," he said. "If something goes wrong in the preparation, no."

"What could go wrong in the preparation?"

"I could be noticed," he said. "The Nocturne console access is monitored by the House Veyr records system. If someone on the Nocturne side sees unauthorized access activity, they could lock the system further or alert the Meridian side."

"Is there someone on the Nocturne side who would alert Meridian?"

He paused. "There are people who remain loyal to the old configuration. Yes."

She thought about this for a moment. "Then we don't use that window. We use the one before it, which gives us five days of margin."

"That's a tighter preparation window on my side."

"How tight?"

He calculated. "Manageable. If I begin as soon as I know the date."

"Consider it known," she said.

The zone shimmered. They had perhaps two minutes left.

"I'm going to tell Julian about you," she said. "Before the crossing. He needs to understand who he's working with on the Nocturne side."

Caelan looked at her steadily. "He knows about the parallel city."

"He knows the mechanics. He doesn't know about you specifically." She held his gaze. "He will handle it."

"How can you be certain?"

"Because he's already chosen knowing over not-knowing, and that's the hardest choice. Everything after that is detail." She paused. "He has your face. That will be strange for both of you. But he's not you and you're not him, and I think both of you know that."

He was quiet for a moment. "Yes," he said. "We do."

The zone closed.

She walked home through the city at nine fifteen, in the ordinary dark of a Tuesday night, and thought about three windows and eighteen days and a console she had seen that afternoon and a man on the other side who had said: manageable.
