The calibration device Orin had given her was designed for mapping resonance fields, not for timing convergence windows, but it turned out to be useful for both.
Aveline discovered this on Sunday morning, when she set the device on her desk beside the Nocturne clock and ran both at the same time. The calibration device measured the ambient resonance frequency of a space; what she found was that this frequency fluctuated on a cycle that correlated precisely with the Nocturne clock's divergence from standard Meridian time. When the clock's divergence was largest — when Nocturne time and Meridian time were most out of phase — the ambient resonance frequency spiked. These were the convergence windows.
She mapped four cycles over the course of Sunday. The pattern was regular. The next significant window was Tuesday evening.
She wrote this in her notebook alongside a note about the window length she could expect, based on the correlation she had found. The cycle suggested a longer window than last time — possibly fifteen minutes. This was useful. She had questions that required more than thirteen minutes.
She also spent Sunday doing what she had told herself she was going to do and had been putting off because it required a quality of attention she had not quite been able to bring before now. She sat in her mother's chair, in her mother's room, which she had been entering more freely over the past week, and she read through the fourth notebook again. Not looking for new information — she had read it thoroughly. Looking for the emotional shape of it. The record of a person working on something that mattered, over time, with the steady and sometimes exhausted and sometimes exhilarated quality of someone who believed the work was worth doing.
Her mother had been exhausted by it. That was there, in the handwriting — the pressure changing in certain entries, the notes getting shorter and more clipped in periods that the dates suggested were intense working periods. She had also been exhilarated by it, particularly in the entries that recorded conversations with C.V. There was a quality in those entries that was different from the rest of the technical record: slightly faster, slightly more alive, the writing of someone who had found a person who thought the same way they thought and was working on the same thing.
Aveline read these entries and thought about two people on opposite sides of an impossible distance, corresponding through a mechanism that required significant effort and was limited in frequency, finding in each other the thing that was hardest to find when you were working alone: someone who actually understood what you were trying to do.
She thought about the eleventh letter and what he had written in it.
She thought about what it had meant to her mother to have that — and what it might have meant to him.
She put the notebook away and went to practice piano, because she had discovered that piano was where she processed things that were not ready to be processed in words yet, and this was one of those things.
She played for an hour. She came back to her desk. She added to her questions for the Tuesday window: what does the third equation's final variable actually require, and can it be confirmed from the Meridian access point, and have you been able to determine the resonance signature of the Nocturne anchor.
She looked at the last question. The Nocturne anchor. That would be her counterpart on the Nocturne side — the person whose signature was in the Nocturne version of the Accord's second layer, the way hers was in the Meridian version.
She had not asked him about this. She had been so focused on the Meridian mechanics that she had not thought carefully enough about the Nocturne side's equivalent complexity.
She wrote: Ask about the Nocturne resonance anchor. Who is it. Are they accessible.
Then she sat back and looked at the ceiling and thought about the full structure of what was being built toward: two access points, both needing to be engaged simultaneously, the Meridian anchor — herself — providing the final variable for the third equation. The Nocturne anchor presumably filling the equivalent role on that side.
Two people. Two access points. One simultaneous action.
She thought: this requires coordination that goes well beyond what I can achieve through convergence windows.
She thought: I need to talk to him directly. Not through glass. Not across a zone boundary. Directly.
She wrote this in the notebook. She did not yet know how to make it happen. But she wrote it down, because that was the first step: knowing what you needed.
Monday passed in the mechanisms of ordinary life. She had a meeting with the ceremony protocol coordinator, which was the kind of appointment she had always found manageable because it required only the surface version of herself and she could maintain that version without effort while the rest of her attention was occupied elsewhere. She smiled at the right moments and asked the right clarifying questions about the ceremony's formal procedures, and in the part of her attention that was actually present, she was noting which aspects of the ceremony required physical proximity to the Engine chamber, and which of the formal procedures could theoretically be substituted or abbreviated, and at what point in the proceedings the resonance lock would engage.
All of this information was useful. She filed it carefully.
Monday evening: mirror still. No contact. She stood before it for the usual few minutes, then turned away and worked on her notebook until late.
She was building something. She could feel the shape of it forming, the way a machine's purpose becomes visible as its components are assembled. She did not have all the components yet. Tuesday she would get more.
She went to bed at midnight and was asleep before the hour chimed.
Tuesday began with a message from Julian.
He had arranged access to the 7-series section for that afternoon. He had told the staff he was conducting a routine inspection of the older relay infrastructure. This was plausible — heirs to major Engine facilities were occasionally expected to conduct such inspections, and Julian had not done one in several years. No one would question it.
She wrote back that she would meet him at House Veyr at three o'clock.
Then she spent the morning reviewing everything she could find about the 7-series relay structure: not the technical logs Julian had shown her, but the pre-construction documentation she had photographed in the room under the clocktower. She had looked at these materials before in the context of the Accord mechanics; now she looked at them in the context of access-point architecture. What she was looking for was the physical interface — the specific component of the relay structure that would allow input to the base configuration.
She found it on the third review of the third document. It was not obvious — it was described in the same dense archaic technical language as everything else in those documents — but she had been reading this kind of material for long enough now that the relevant terminology stood out the way an anomaly stood out: not dramatic, just slightly different from the surrounding text in the way that things that matter tend to be.
The physical interface was a resonance calibration console, located at the junction of the 7-series relay and the main Engine chamber. It was not the same as the primary Engine controls. It was a secondary input system, designed for making changes to the base configuration. It had been built into the original architecture and was, according to the pre-construction documents, connected to an equivalent console on the Nocturne side.
This was the access point. This was what her mother had been trying to reach. This was what Caelan had been locked out of three years ago.
She spent the next hour constructing the questions she needed to ask at the Tuesday convergence window, which was also Tuesday evening. The afternoon visit to House Veyr would tell her the physical reality of the access point. The evening window would tell her what Caelan knew about the Nocturne equivalent and whether their timing on the reconfiguration was close enough to be workable.
She arrived at House Veyr at three o'clock.
Julian met her in the entry hall. He looked the way she had come to associate with him when he was doing something he had actually decided to do rather than something he had been told to do: more present than usual, the particular quality of alertness that came from genuine agency rather than performed competence.
"The staff think we're doing a routine inspection," he said, keeping his voice low in the hall. "There's a senior engineer who knows the 7-series. He'll accompany us to the access level."
"Will that be a problem?"
"He knows the systems. He doesn't know what we know. He'll show us the infrastructure and tell us what we ask about." A pause. "I'll handle him."
They walked through the main house and through a service corridor she had not accessed before, down two flights of stairs into a level of the building that had a different quality from everything above it: older stone, lower ceilings, the particular mineral smell of deep engineering infrastructure. The resonance hum she had been noticing everywhere since she learned to notice it was stronger here — not louder exactly, but more present, more textured.
The engineer was waiting for them at the base of the stairs: a grey-haired man with the quiet competence of someone who had been working with complicated machinery for decades. He greeted Julian with the respect owed to the heir and Aveline with the mild curiosity of someone who had been told the heir's fiancée was accompanying him and had decided this was unusual but not his business to question.
They walked through the relay infrastructure. The engineer explained as they went: the 7-series conduit, the original resonance channels, the maintenance protocols that kept systems this old running. Aveline listened and asked questions, and the questions she asked were the right questions — she could see it in the engineer's face, the slight upward revision of his assessment of her.
At the end of the relay corridor, they reached a chamber that was larger than the surrounding rooms, with higher ceilings and walls that curved slightly in a way that spoke of structural resonance design rather than simple architecture. At the center of the chamber was a console.
It was not large. It was not dramatic. It was the kind of equipment that looked like it had been made to last indefinitely: heavy construction, simple interface, the design of something that was expected to be used rarely but that needed to work correctly every time it was used.
The engineer explained its function in the terms he would give to an heir conducting a routine inspection: the resonance calibration interface, used for making adjustments to the Engine's base configuration when required. He noted it had not been used in several decades. He noted it was fully functional.
Aveline looked at the console. She looked at the interface components. She identified the input mechanism — the specific element that would accept the third equation's final variable.
She thought: this is where I will stand.
She made no note of this. She asked two more questions about the maintenance logs, thanked the engineer, and let Julian handle the conclusion of the inspection with the ease of someone who had been conducting institutional visits his entire life.
They walked back up through the relay level and through the service corridor and into the main house, and neither of them said anything until they were in the study with the door closed.
"It's real," Julian said.
"Yes."
"And you know what it does."
"I know what it needs to do." She sat down. She felt, she realized, extremely calm. The kind of calm that came not from distance from a situation but from being entirely in it. "I need to tell you one more thing. There is someone on the Nocturne side who has been working on this in parallel with my mother for years. A man named Caelan Veyr."
Julian was quiet.
"He appeared in my mirror," she said. "In convergence zones. That's why I've been at the old northern station. He is — connected to your family, in the Nocturne version of things. But he is not you. He is his own person, and he has been trying to reach a Corvayne who would listen for a long time, and I am the Corvayne who listened."
Julian said, after a moment: "He has my face."
"He has your structure," she said. "Your face as it would look if it had been carrying something heavy for a very long time."
He looked at the table. At his hands on the table.
"And you trust him," he said.
"He has been honest with me about every probability," she said. "Including the ones that weren't in his favor."
Another silence. Julian nodded once, slowly, the way he nodded when he was genuinely processing something rather than performing acceptance. "What happens next," he said, "is that we figure out the timing. Is that right?"
"Yes."
"And we have—" He calculated. "Eighteen days before the ceremony."
"Yes."
He looked up. "Then we should get to work.
They spent the rest of the afternoon working.
Julian spread the historical Engine logs across the table again, and Aveline spread her notebook beside them, and they built a shared map of what was known from the Meridian side. He was, she found, an efficient collaborator: he did not restate things he had understood, did not ask for reassurance, moved forward on the information available and noted clearly what remained unclear. She recognized in this the specific quality of someone whose intelligence was used to working in conditions of incomplete information and who had learned to be useful anyway rather than waiting for certainty.
She added to her respect for him.
At one point, working through the relay architecture documentation, he stopped and looked at her across the table. "How did you learn all this so fast?"
"My mother's notebooks," she said. "She left very good notes."
"She was planning for you."
"She was planning for whoever had the notebooks. She hoped it would be me. She turned out to be right."
He was quiet for a moment. Then: "I'm sorry," he said, "that no one told you earlier. About any of it."
She looked at him. "You didn't know any of it earlier."
"No. But my father did, and I—" He paused. "I let not-knowing be easy for too long. I should have pushed harder."
She thought about what Caelan had said in the first mirror contact: I know this is difficult to accept. And she thought about what it was actually costing Julian to be here, in this room, agreeing to work against his father's design. She thought about the specific quality of the decision he had made on Saturday when she had asked him to choose.
"You're pushing now," she said.
He looked at her, and the expression on his face was complicated — the specific complication of someone who had let themselves not-know for a long time and had now chosen knowing, which was not a comfortable transition. But underneath it something simpler and steadier. "Yes," he said. "I am."
They worked until early evening. When she left, she walked home through the city with the particular quality of focus that came from a day where significant things had happened and been handled, and thought about convergence windows and timing and a Tuesday evening that was also tonight.
She had the access point confirmed. She had Julian in. She had eighteen days.
The convergence window, per the calibration device, was at nine o'clock. She had two hours.
She had dinner with her father — ordinary, performed with her usual competence — and went to her room at eight and sat at her desk and reviewed her questions one more time.
At eight forty-five she put on her coat and walked to the old northern station.
The window was fifteen minutes, as she had predicted from the cycle mapping. Caelan arrived at the zone within the first minute, which meant he had also been tracking the window timing.
She told him about the console.
He was quiet for a long moment.
"You've confirmed the Meridian access point," he said.
"Yes. And I have someone on the Meridian side who can operate it." She paused. "I need to know about the Nocturne access point. Whether you have a path to it. And I need to know about the Nocturne resonance anchor — who they are, what their role in the equation is."
He looked at her steadily. "The Nocturne anchor is not a person," he said. "It's a signature embedded in the resonance records — the frequency pattern that the Nocturne version of the Accord is locked to. It was set when the current configuration was established sixty years ago."
"It doesn't require a living person to input it."
"No. It's already in the system. The override will read it automatically from the records if I can access the console."
She absorbed this. "Then the obstacle on the Nocturne side is purely access."
"Yes. I've been locked out of the console for three years. The authorization requires a senior Veyr signature and Severin has not given me one."
She thought. "Julian has a senior Veyr signature."
Caelan looked at her for a long moment across the shimmer of the zone boundary.
"Julian," he said.
"He's in," she said. "He knows what the mechanism does and he's chosen. He doesn't know about you specifically yet, but I'm going to tell him." She held Caelan's gaze. "He will need to come to Nocturne. Not through a mirror — physically. Through a full convergence."
Another long pause.
"That's possible," Caelan said. "Technically. The full zone at the station will allow physical crossing if the window is stable enough and long enough. I've never brought anyone through, but the mathematics support it."
"Can you make the Nocturne console accessible to someone crossing from Meridian?"
"If I can get to it from the outside and manually override the lock before they arrive — yes." He was thinking; she could see it in the same way she could see Julian thinking, the specific quality of a mind working on the actual problem rather than performing consideration. "It would take me approximately three hours of preparation on the Nocturne side. I would need advance notice of the crossing timing."
"How far in advance?"
"One window before the crossing. Two would be safer."
She nodded. She was doing the timing calculations in her head: the convergence cycle, the ceremony date, the window that would be stable enough for a physical crossing. The longest window in the cycle occurred approximately every fifth day. She had three more such windows before the ceremony.
"The last significant window before the ceremony is three days before it," she said. "Is that enough time?"
"It is if everything works," he said. "If something goes wrong in the preparation, no."
"What could go wrong in the preparation?"
"I could be noticed," he said. "The Nocturne console access is monitored by the House Veyr records system. If someone on the Nocturne side sees unauthorized access activity, they could lock the system further or alert the Meridian side."
"Is there someone on the Nocturne side who would alert Meridian?"
He paused. "There are people who remain loyal to the old configuration. Yes."
She thought about this for a moment. "Then we don't use that window. We use the one before it, which gives us five days of margin."
"That's a tighter preparation window on my side."
"How tight?"
He calculated. "Manageable. If I begin as soon as I know the date."
"Consider it known," she said.
The zone shimmered. They had perhaps two minutes left.
"I'm going to tell Julian about you," she said. "Before the crossing. He needs to understand who he's working with on the Nocturne side."
Caelan looked at her steadily. "He knows about the parallel city."
"He knows the mechanics. He doesn't know about you specifically." She held his gaze. "He will handle it."
"How can you be certain?"
"Because he's already chosen knowing over not-knowing, and that's the hardest choice. Everything after that is detail." She paused. "He has your face. That will be strange for both of you. But he's not you and you're not him, and I think both of you know that."
He was quiet for a moment. "Yes," he said. "We do."
The zone closed.
She walked home through the city at nine fifteen, in the ordinary dark of a Tuesday night, and thought about three windows and eighteen days and a console she had seen that afternoon and a man on the other side who had said: manageable.
You've reached the end of this chapter
