Something was wrong with the sky over Meridian.
Aveline was walking through the old market district on Friday morning — on her way to the archive for what she had told herself would be the last visit, a final confirmation of the restriction notice details before she closed that line of investigation — when she saw it.
It was not subtle. That was what made it strange: the things she had been noticing for weeks had been subtle, the kind of wrong that required specific attention and the right light at the right angle. This was not subtle.
A section of the sky above the central clocktower district — perhaps three hundred meters wide, perhaps less — was the wrong color. Not the wrong shade of silver-blue. Wrong entirely: the deep violet of the Nocturne sky, visible through what appeared to be a gap in the ordinary sky, the way you might see through a tear in fabric to what was on the other side.
It lasted approximately four seconds. Then it was silver-blue again.
Aveline stood on the pavement and looked at where the violet had been and breathed slowly.
Around her, the market district continued its Friday morning activity. Vendors arranging their stalls. People moving with the purposeful rhythm of people who had somewhere to be. A sky-rail car moving along the elevated line above her, briefly casting its moving shadow across the pavement.
Two people near her had stopped, looking up. One said something to the other and they both looked for a moment longer and then moved on. They had seen something. They were not alarmed. They were moving on the way you move on from something unusual when you have no context for what it means.
She pulled out the calibration device.
The ambient resonance reading was significantly elevated — higher than she had measured it in any previous reading, including the convergence window measurements. The Engine variance was spiking. Something had shifted.
She moved quickly toward a glass building half a block away — not running, but moving with the economy of someone who needed information and needed it now. She looked at the glass.
And there he was.
Not in a convergence zone. Not in a mirror. In the glass of an ordinary building on an ordinary street, in the middle of a Friday morning, standing in the Nocturne version of this same street and looking at the sky above him with the expression of someone who has seen something unexpected.
He saw her at the same moment she saw him. His face changed — relief and something else she did not have a word for yet, a quality that appeared when they were near each other and which she had been filing carefully without fully examining.
"What was that?" she said, keeping her voice low. The glass was thin cover but it was cover.
"The Engine variance spiked," he said. His voice had the slightly displaced quality it always had through glass but she could read him through it now, the way she could read all the things she had learned to read. "There was a boundary failure. Brief. The fields compressed and then released."
"Boundary failure." She thought about this. "Is this getting worse?"
"Yes." He was direct about it the way he was always direct about things he was certain of. "This has happened twice before, but never this visible from the Meridian side. The fields are degrading faster than I calculated."
She thought about Mirel's list. Thirty-one names. The rate accelerating.
"How much time do we actually have?" she said.
He looked at her steadily through the glass. "If the current degradation rate holds, the mechanism has perhaps three to four weeks before a boundary failure severe enough to affect both cities simultaneously."
"That's close to the ceremony date."
"Yes."
She processed this. The ceremony was in eleven days. Three to four weeks was longer than eleven days, which meant the ceremony date was not itself the crisis point — but it was close, and if the ceremony proceeded as designed and the Accord was completed, the mechanism's increased draw on Nocturne would likely accelerate the degradation further.
"We have to succeed on the first try," she said.
"Yes."
"No margin for a second attempt."
"No."
She looked at him for a moment. At the violet sky above him. At the ordinary Friday morning happening on his side of the glass, the same street different light, people who did not know their sky had just been visible in Meridian's sky for four seconds.
"Then we won't need a second attempt," she said.
He held her gaze. "No," he said. "We won't."
The glass stilled — not a convergence, not a zone, just the ordinary reflectiveness of glass, which was its own kind of boundary. She looked at her own reflection for a moment: composed, precise, the woman she had been performing for twenty-two years and was now, more than ever, actually being.
She put the calibration device back in her pocket. She continued toward the archive.
She thought: eleven days.
She thought: no margin.
She thought about what it meant to know that, and to continue.
She had always been good at continuing. Her mother had taught her that too, in the notebooks: that the quality most necessary for this kind of work was not brilliance or even knowledge. It was the ability to hold the full weight of what was at stake and continue working anyway. To not let the weight paralyze the hands.
She walked into the archive. She did the last confirmation she needed. She walked back out.
She had what she needed.
She went home and updated her notebook: boundary failure visible from Meridian side. Timeline revised — degradation accelerating. Eleven days is not comfortable but it is sufficient. No margin means first attempt must succeed. Prepare accordingly.
Prepare accordingly. She had been preparing for eleven days. She would be ready.
She spent the afternoon in careful review of everything she had, checking and rechecking the plan from every angle she could reach. She found three contingencies she had not fully addressed and addressed them. She found one timing issue in the preparation schedule and adjusted it.
By the time the sky-rail was running its evening sequence, she had a plan that held up to the scrutiny she could apply to it. There would be things she had not anticipated — there always were. But she had done what could be done.
She thought about her mother sitting in the room she had been working in for years, holding the same weight, deciding it was time to go through the door.
She thought: not yet. But soon.
The Nocturne clock in her drawer ticked its patient different time.
That evening she went to the mirror.
She had not done this in the deliberate way since the early days of the investigation — had stopped standing in front of it waiting, had stopped expecting contact at will rather than at the specific limited moments when the mechanism allowed it. But tonight she stood before it intentionally, not waiting for contact but thinking through the glass, the way she thought through the windows when she needed the exterior to focus her interior attention.
She thought: the boundary failed visibly today. People in the market district saw the sky of Nocturne. They saw it and moved on because they had no context. When the reconfiguration happens, they will have context. They will have seen the other sky before, and they will understand what it is, and eventually the city will adjust to knowing that its sky is one of two.
She thought about what that would mean. She had been thinking about it practically — the mechanism, the ceremony, the Engine access points. She had not been thinking very much about what came after, because after required the before to succeed, and she had been entirely focused on the before.
But the boundary failing visibly today made the after more real. The Nocturne sky in the Meridian sky, four seconds, and two people stopping to look and then moving on. Not afraid. Just — noticing. The way you notice something you have been subliminally aware of for a long time when it finally becomes visible.
She thought: both cities have been subliminally aware of each other. The resonance fields have been in contact for generations. The people who lived in both cities had been feeling the presence of the other in the quality of the air and the slight wrongness of certain kinds of light and the specific dreams that came from sleeping too close to a convergence zone.
She thought about Orin Vale and his clock shop full of resonance mechanisms and the quiet of someone who had been living with this awareness for a very long time.
She thought about herself, as a child, being taught by her mother to notice things that were slightly wrong. Her mother had been teaching her to notice the other city. Not explicitly — but that was what it was.
She said, quietly, to the mirror: I see it now. I think I always was going to see it. You were right about me.
Her reflection looked back at her, composed and steady.
She went to bed.
She lay in the dark and thought about the boundary failure and about eleven days and about a plan that had no margin, and she held all of this with the steady quality she had been building toward without knowing it, and she slept.
Saturday brought a message from Lord Severin.
He had not messaged her directly before. The communications had always been through Julian or through the formal House Veyr courier network. This was a personal message, hand-delivered by his private secretary to House Corvayne, addressed to Aveline specifically.
It was brief. He hoped the preparations for the ceremony were proceeding well. He looked forward to welcoming her formally into the Veyr family. And, in the last line, almost incidentally: he wondered if she had had a chance to visit the archive as he had suggested, and whether the historical materials had been illuminating.
She read it three times.
She thought about the timing: the message arrived on the morning after the first visible boundary failure. He knew about the boundary failure — he monitored the Engine systems, he would have seen the variance spike. He knew she had been at the archive, because he had offered her access and presumably had the archive visit records available to him. He was checking whether she had found anything. Not with suspicion — with curiosity. With the particular kind of attention that a careful person paid to things that might require adjusting.
She thought: he is watching the situation recalibrate and he is watching me within it.
She wrote a reply: gracious, brief, expressing enthusiasm for the ceremony preparations and noting that the historical materials had been fascinating. She mentioned nothing specific. She thanked him for the continued access.
She sealed the letter and gave it to the house courier.
Then she went to her desk and added a note to her preparation schedule: Severin is monitoring. Timeline sensitivity increased. Avoid any action that could alert him before the crossing.
This was already implicit in the plan. But she wrote it explicitly now, because the letter had been a specific message to herself: he is watching and he is intelligent and you cannot afford to give him time to respond.
Ten days.
Ten days was different from eleven. Something about crossing into single digits made the remaining time feel more concrete, more present. She had been counting down from a comfortable distance; now the countdown had weight.
She spent Saturday in the ordinary functions of being a betrothed noblewoman in the final weeks before a ceremony: another fitting, a meeting with the flowers coordinator, a brief visit to the Thessen house for a formal lunch that was a proxy for confirming the ceremony guest list. She moved through all of it with complete composure and used the spaces between required attention to run the preparation calculations in the part of her mind that was always working.
At the formal lunch, Lady Thessen said to her, very quietly over the last course: "My youngest daughter tells me the sky did something unusual yesterday."
Aveline kept her expression neutral. "There were some unusual atmospheric conditions near the clocktower district," she said. "The resonance engineers at the Engine complex are looking into it."
Lady Thessen looked at her with the particular expression of a woman who had been in the political and social apparatus of this city for forty years and had learned to recognize the shape of information being managed. "Yes," she said. "I expect they are."
They held each other's gaze for a moment.
Then the conversation moved elsewhere and they did not refer to it again.
Aveline walked home through the Saturday city and thought about Lady Thessen's expression and about the fact that the people at the top of this city's social apparatus were not, in general, unintelligent, and that the visible boundary failure had given them something to notice.
She thought: when this is over — when both skies are stable and visible and the mechanism is changed — the city will need to understand what happened. Not just the Accord and its second layer. The full picture. The thirty-one names on Mirel's list. The years of her mother working in the gaps of what was permitted. All of it.
Mirel was going to write that story. She had promised her she could.
She thought: that story is going to matter. That is what comes after.
She went home. She made notes. She thought about ten days.
She was ready to be ready.
Sunday she rested. This was deliberate — she had learned from her mother's notebooks that sustained intensive work required deliberate rest, that the mind that did not rest made errors in proportion to its exhaustion, and that she could not afford errors in the next ten days.
She rested by doing the things that were hers and not the work: she played piano for two hours. She read one of the engineering texts her mother had annotated, not looking for new information but simply being with her mother's handwriting and her mother's thinking. She sat in the garden in the late afternoon when the light was good and thought about nothing in particular, which she found more difficult than most things but was improving at.
She thought: my mother went into The Between alone. She went in without having finished, without having confirmed the third equation's final variable, without having Julian's cooperation or Caelan's confirmed date.
She thought: she went in with what she had, because the alternative was not going in at all.
She thought: I have more than she had. I will not need to go in the same way.
But she held the possibility. She held it the way she held all the contingencies — not fearfully, practically. If the plan did not work. If something prevented the crossing or the console access or the simultaneous input. If Severin moved faster than she expected.
The contingency was The Between. It was not her first choice. It was what was there if nothing else was.
She thought: I am prepared for that.
She sat in the garden until the light went and then she went inside and had dinner and went to bed.
Monday. Nine days.
She went to the convergence window that evening with the crossing date confirmed: eight days from now, the long window. She told Caelan. She told him about Julian — accurately and specifically, the way she had planned — and she watched his expression through the zone boundary as he processed it.
He was quiet for a longer moment than usual.
"He chose," he said finally.
"Yes."
"He knows who I am."
"He knows you have his face and a different weight behind it. I think those were my exact words."
Something in his expression that she had come to recognize: the not-quite-smile that appeared when she said something precise that also happened to be kind. "Yes," he said. "That is accurate."
"He will handle the meeting," she said. "He is better at difficult things than he looks, which is already better than most."
He looked at her for a moment. "How do you know that?"
"Because he came to me with questions instead of going to his father with concerns," she said. "That was the harder choice and he made it. People who make that choice once tend to keep making it."
He was quiet again. The zone boundary shimmered slightly — they were past the midpoint of the window.
"Eight days," he said.
"Eight days."
"The preparation on the Nocturne side requires six. I will begin tomorrow."
"I know." She held his gaze through the shimmer. "Do not get noticed."
"I will do my best," he said.
The zone closed.
She walked home through the city, and the sky above her was silver-blue and entirely ordinary, and she thought about eight days and about a man she had never been in the same room as, on the other side of an impossible distance, beginning the final preparation.
The Nocturne clock on her desk — she had moved it out of the drawer a few days ago, placed it beside the calibration device, allowed it to be visible — ticked its patient different time as she prepared for bed. She had stopped noticing the difference between its rhythm and her own clocks' rhythm. They had become simply two timepieces in the same room, each counting out the hours of its respective city, both present, both real.
Eight days. She thought: it begins now. She lay in the dark and listened to both clocks count, and thought: I am ready. The machines were in motion. Eight days was the number that existed, and she intended to use every one of them well.
