The first cross-city working group session happened on Thursday, as planned, in the Nocturne Engine facility's main conference room.
Julian had crossed for the first time the night before — Caelan had arranged a preparatory crossing window specifically so that Julian would not arrive at the working group session having just crossed for the first time. She had thought this was thoughtful. Caelan had said: it was practical. She thought it was both.
Julian had handled the crossing with the specific composure she had come to expect from him: the moment of seeing the violet sky for the first time, followed immediately by the quality of attention that meant he was processing fully rather than reacting. He had stood in the Nocturne street for a long moment and looked up at the sky and said nothing. Then he had asked where they were going.
She had shown him the neighborhood near the station first — not the fading buildings, not the most extreme examples. Just the ordinary texture of the city. He had walked through it with the same quality of present attention that characterized everything he did and had not said much, which she had taken as a sign that he was taking it in rather than a sign that he was overwhelmed by it.
At the fading school, he stopped.
She had not planned to bring him here on the first visit. But the route to the conference facility passed near it and she had not redirected, because she had thought: he needs to see it.
He stood in front of it for a long time.
"How long has it been like this?" he said.
"The current level — about fifteen years," Caelan said. "It was worse a month ago. It stopped getting worse when the mechanism stopped."
Julian looked at the upper floors. At the uncertain quality of the walls above the third story. At the architectural detail of the windows — still visible, the carved stone, the proportion of the openings — but with that quality of fifty percent presence that made everything slightly wrong.
"My family did this," he said. Not a question. A statement he was making to himself.
"Yes," Caelan said. Simply.
"I knew that already," Julian said. "But." He stopped. "Knowing it and looking at it are different things."
"Yes," Caelan said. "They are."
Julian stood for another moment. Then he turned and they walked to the conference facility, and he was quiet for most of the walk, and when they arrived he was entirely present and precise and useful for the full three hours of the cross-city session.
She noted this. She filed it in the part of her mind that tracked things about Julian Veyr that she found she respected: his willingness to look at things directly, his capacity to be changed by what he saw without being paralyzed by it, his decision to continue after the changing.
The session itself was productive in the specific way of first meetings between groups who had been working on related problems independently and who suddenly had access to each other's knowledge. The Nocturne engineers had information about the field behavior from the Nocturne side that the Meridian side had been estimating; the Meridian side had information about the Meridian field behavior that the Nocturne side needed. The exchange took three hours and produced a significantly more complete picture of the separation process than either side had had alone.
Aveline ran the session. Not because she was the most technically expert person in the room — Caelan and her mother were, between them, more technically expert than she was — but because she was the person who understood both sides of the conversation and could mediate between them without losing precision.
She had not known this was one of her skills until she started using it.
She thought: this is also something my mother prepared me for, without knowing she was preparing me for it. The anomaly detection, the precise communication, the ability to hold two frameworks simultaneously without letting either one obscure the other.
After the session, walking back through Nocturne toward the crossing point, Julian said to her: "You were very good in there."
"Thank you."
"The mediation," he said. "Between the two technical teams. They were talking past each other at one point and you found the translation."
"I've had practice," she said. "In multiple contexts."
He was quiet for a moment. "You're not going to stay at the center of this forever," he said. "You said so yourself — you don't want to build something that runs through one person."
"No."
"But you're very good at the center."
She thought about this. "I am good at starting things," she said. "Getting them to the point where they can run without me. That is a specific skill. The people who are good at running things indefinitely are different people." She paused. "I am trying to find those people and put them in the right positions."
Julian nodded. "And after that?"
She thought about what came after. She thought about the working group running without her at the center. She thought about the documentation project with Mirel and Sera. She thought about the Institute she and Orin were planning — a formal research body, independent of the houses, with a mandate for the ongoing technical monitoring and the historical record.
She thought about Nocturne, which she had been visiting for four days and which she was going to keep visiting, in the specific way of someone who is learning a place rather than simply passing through it.
She thought about a man who had said for however long it takes.
"After that," she said, "I think I am going to spend some time in Nocturne. Learning it properly."
Julian looked at her. He had the specific expression he got when he understood something that she had not explicitly said.
"Yes," he said. "That seems right."
They crossed back through the zone into Meridian as the afternoon was going gold, and the silver-blue sky opened above them with its violet edge, and she thought: two cities, both of them becoming more real to her every day she chose to understand them.
The week settled into a rhythm.
She was aware of the rhythm as it formed, the way you were aware of a piece of music starting to cohere: the daily calibration readings in the morning, the working group meetings on alternating days, the cross-city sessions on Thursdays, the visits to Nocturne on Tuesdays and Fridays, the evenings at the kitchen table or the piano or in the garden when the weather was good. The rhythm was not imposed — it grew from the requirements of the work and from the specific gravity of people who wanted to be in the same place.
Her mother was doing the documentation. This was consuming most of her waking hours and she seemed, Aveline thought, entirely satisfied with this. Marcelline Corvayne had spent nine years in The Between waiting to complete this specific work and was now completing it with the focused energy of someone who had been waiting a very long time. Aveline helped when her mother needed her: checking specific technical details, reviewing sections for clarity, being the second set of eyes that her mother had always worked best with.
Orin was building the Institute. Not the physical structure yet — that was months away — but the organizational framework, the founding mandate, the relationships with the technical facilities in both cities that would make it functional. He had been waiting for something to organize his energy toward that was worthy of it, and this was worthy.
Julian was handling the formal dissolution of the Accord's legal architecture and the development of the new governance framework. He was good at this — methodical, precise, with the specific institutional knowledge that came from having grown up inside the system he was now restructuring. He came to the kitchen table frequently with questions and she answered them and he went back to the work.
And Caelan.
Caelan was in both cities simultaneously — not literally, but in the practical sense of someone whose work spanned both and who moved between them with a frequency that was becoming ordinary. He was the primary Nocturne representative in the working group. He was coordinating the Nocturne side of the Institute's development with Orin. He was helping Sera Vale access the resonance records for the Nocturne historical account.
And he was in the kitchen at six in the morning with tea already made and the monitoring notes already reviewed, and in the garden in the evenings when the calibration device showed stable readings and there was time to sit with the good quality of a task proceeding correctly, and in the chair near the piano when she played, which was more frequent now than it had ever been in her life.
She thought about all of this, on a Friday evening in the second week after the ceremony, sitting in the garden with the two skies visible above her.
She had been twenty-two years old, composed and precise and carrying everything alone, with a betrothal announcement and a silk dress and a document she had not been permitted to understand. She had thought she knew what her life was going to be.
She thought now about the version of herself that had stood in front of the mirror on that first morning and seen a woman assembled for a specific purpose, and about the version of herself that was sitting in this garden now, and about the distance between those two versions, which was not a distance of time but a distance of becoming.
She thought: I became this. Over weeks, one true thing at a time.
She thought about her mother teaching her anomaly detection and piano and the proper way to read a technical schematic, preparing her for something neither of them had known to name. She thought about Caelan in a mirror at half past eleven, saying there is a second layer of text that you need to understand. She thought about Julian saying what do you need instead of what are you doing.
She thought about all the people who had been in her story, each of them choosing something difficult at a specific moment.
She thought: I am made of all of those choices, including my own.
It was a good thing to be made of.
Caelan came out into the garden at some point and sat in the other chair. She did not ask why he was there or what he wanted. He was there because it was an evening in the garden and the readings were stable and the work was good and there was nowhere else that made more sense.
She thought: this is also the after. Not the dramatic version. The real one.
She thought: I want this to be the texture of my life.
She looked at him.
She said: "I'm glad you came through the mirror."
He looked at her. The expression she had been cataloguing for weeks and which was entirely legible to her now.
"So am I," he said.
The evening settled around them. Both skies held each other at the edges of the garden light, silver-blue and deep violet, each of them entirely themselves.
The second week's cross-city session produced the first draft of the joint monitoring protocol.
It was sixty-three pages long, which was either very thorough or slightly excessive, and she reviewed all of it over two evenings with Caelan and her mother, marking sections for revision and sections that were ready to approve. The engineering sections were very good — the Nocturne team and the Meridian team had found a shared technical language faster than she had expected, which she attributed to the specific quality of engineers who were genuinely interested in the problem. The governance sections needed more work: the language of joint authority was harder to develop than the language of technical monitoring, because it required both sides to agree not just on what the facts were but on what the values should be.
She rewrote two of the governance sections herself. Not because she was the right person to write governance documents — she was not — but because she could see clearly what both sides were trying to say and she had a way of putting things that held precision without losing warmth. She had been discovering this about herself: she could write in a way that carried information and carried something else simultaneously. She thought it was another thing her mother had taught her without naming it.
She sent the revisions to both sides with a note: this is my best attempt at the translation. Tell me where I've gotten it wrong.
Both sides came back with the same two modifications and no fundamental objections.
She thought: translation is a skill. I am going to need it for a long time.
On the Friday of the second week, Mirel's full account was published.
It ran across twelve pages, with a companion piece from Sera Vale running simultaneously in Nocturne. Both cities, both lists, the full technical account of the mechanism, the documentary evidence of the restriction notices and the removed catalog entries, the governance history of the Accord, the names of everyone who had been affected.
And two pages on the work that had stopped it, which was the part Aveline had been most specific about when Mirel had asked her to review the draft: she had wanted it to be clear that this was not the story of one person or one family. It was the story of many people working across many years in many different ways, including the people who had not lived to see it completed.
Evelisse Corvayne's name was in the section about the people who had not lived to see it completed. Mirel had written about her with the same precision and care she gave every name in the account: what she had found, what she had been working on, what had happened to her, and what her work had contributed to the eventual solution.
Aveline read that section three times.
The fourth time she read it, Caelan was at the kitchen table with his monitoring notes and she said, across the table: "Mirel did it right."
He looked up.
"Evelisse," she said. "The section about her. It's right."
He read it. She watched him read it: the specific quality of someone receiving something they had been carrying alone for a long time and finding that it had been understood.
He put the paper down. He was quiet.
"Yes," he said, after a moment. "It's right."
She thought about carrying things alone. About all the people in this story who had been doing that — her mother in The Between, Caelan in his diminishing city, Orin in his clock shop, Sera with her notebook full of unanswerable questions. All of them working in the gaps of what was permitted, holding their part of the weight, waiting for the moment when the weight could be distributed across enough people to be manageable.
She thought: we are many people now. And the weight is distributed.
She thought: no one has to carry it alone anymore.
After Mirel's piece published, the responses came in waves.
The first wave was the families. People who had read the names on the list and recognized someone. People who had been keeping journals, like Tara Weis, or who had held on to photographs, or who had simply refused to let the uncertainty take hold because some instinct told them to keep the record. They wrote to the working group, to the Institute's early contact address, to Mirel's publication directly. There were more of them, in the first twenty-four hours after publication, than Aveline had calculated.
She had calculated a hundred responses. They received more than four hundred.
She spent an afternoon reading through them and compiling the information — names, connections, dates, the specific details that would go into the full record. It was painstaking work, the kind that required care rather than speed, because each message was a person asking to be seen and the seeing required actually reading what they had written.
She had help: her mother on the Meridian side, Sera on the Nocturne side, three volunteers from the working group. But she personally read every message from the first wave, because she had told herself she was going to do this properly and properly meant being in contact with the actual weight of what had happened.
It was a significant weight.
She sat with it for several days. Not crumpled under it — she was too much her mother's daughter for that, too trained in the specific skill of holding weight and continuing to function. But present with it. Letting it be as large as it was.
On the third day after publication, she was in the garden with the calibration device and her response notes when she felt Caelan sit in the chair beside her.
She had not heard him come out. She looked up.
"The monitoring shows stable," he said.
"I know."
He looked at her face. The expression he got when he was reading her: the specific attention she had learned to recognize as care. "You've been inside the responses," he said.
"Yes."
"Four hundred families."
"More than that now."
He was quiet.
"I knew the number," she said. "I knew intellectually — thirty-one here, an unknown number in Nocturne, the mechanism running for sixty years. I knew the scope." She paused. "Reading the letters is different from knowing the scope."
"Yes," he said. "It is."
She looked at the calibration device. Stable. Both systems holding. The mechanism stopped.
"The work is good," she said. "The responses are — they are painful but they are also people reaching out rather than staying alone with it. That is good. It is the kind of painful that comes from healing rather than harm."
He looked at her steadily. "Yes."
"I am all right," she said. "I want you to know that. I am not losing my footing. I am just — present with it."
"I know," he said. "That is why I sat down. Not because you need to be helped. Because presence seemed like the right response."
She thought about this. About the difference between someone who came to manage your difficulty and someone who came to be with you in it. She had spent twenty-two years managing everything alone and the first kind of person — the kind who came to help — had made her feel more alone, because help at arm's length was still arm's length. This was different.
"Thank you," she said.
They sat in the garden together for a while, the calibration device showing stable readings between them, the letters in her lap, the two skies above holding their colors in the afternoon light. She read through a few more responses. He was simply there.
She thought: this is what I mean, when I say I am glad you came through the mirror.
Not the solving. The sitting.
