She crossed back into Meridian in the evening, through the long window that held until almost eight o'clock. The Meridian sky was gold at the edges with the setting sun, and the violet was visible at the other edges, and both of them were simply the sky.

She walked home through the city thinking about variables.

She thought: when Caelan first appeared in my mirror, he told me I was a variable — the resonance anchor, the element the Engine had not been designed to account for. I disrupted the system by existing in a form it could not categorize.

She thought: I was a variable. And now I am a person who has chosen her own variables carefully: the work, the people, the cities, the specific days of the week that were hers. None of those were assigned to me. All of them were chosen.

She thought: I am still a variable. But now I am the variable that I chose to be.

She thought: that is what the whole thing was about. Not the mechanism or the Accord or the dissolution. The specific quality of being the person who decides what they are, rather than the person who performs what they were assembled to be.

She thought: I am her. I am specifically and entirely her.

She walked home under both skies, and the Engine beneath the city continued its slow and natural return to what it had always been designed to be, and she thought: yes.

She arrived home to find her mother at the piano.

Not working — playing. A piece Aveline did not recognize, something slow and careful and clearly being worked out from memory rather than performed from full knowledge.

She stood in the doorway and listened.

Her mother stopped and looked up. "I've been trying to remember this for nine years," she said. "I had it almost right. Now I have the last phrase."

She played the last phrase. It was simple — four notes, a particular resolution. But it was the right one. You could hear it: the phrase that completed the thing.

"Good," Aveline said.

"Yes," her mother said. "Good."

She sat on the bench beside her mother — the same bench she had sat on at age eight, learning where to place her hands — and they were quiet for a moment, the two of them in the piano room that had always been theirs.

Her mother played the piece through from the beginning. Now with the last phrase correct. All of it.

Aveline listened.

She thought: this is also the after. Her mother finding the last four notes of a piece she had been trying to remember for nine years. The specific quality of a small thing completed after a long time.

She thought: the after is made of these. The large things and the small ones. The Covenant ratified and the field monitoring and the last four notes of a remembered piece.

She thought: I want all of them.

She thought: I have them.

The piece ended. The room was quiet.

Both clocks ticked their different times.

Outside, the two skies held the city in their particular autumn quality — silver-blue and deep violet, both of them entirely real, both of them simply the sky.
