The school reached full presence in the thirty-eighth week.
Not the entire building — the northeast district had multiple affected buildings and the school was only one of them, and not every floor had recovered equally. But the building that she had been watching since her first visit to Nocturne, the school that Tomas Ren had attended and that had been losing its upper floors for sixty years, was at ninety-seven percent presence.
She stood in front of it with Caelan on a Thursday morning.
She could see the upper floors clearly. The carved stone of the window frames — the specific style that three generations of a craftspeople family had built across the northeast district, which she had drawn in her notebook and whose history she had read. The proportions of the architecture. The particular quality of the northeast district's old buildings, which had been entirely themselves through everything.
Ninety-seven percent was not one hundred percent. But it was enough to see.
She said: it is there.
He said: yes.
She thought about the three years she had projected when she first arrived. About the two years, possibly less, that the acceleration had suggested. About the months the harmonic enhancement had compressed it to. About this specific Thursday morning, approximately seven months after the ceremony, standing in front of a school that was almost entirely back.
She thought: I said I would be here for this.
She thought: I am here for this.
She said: when will it be at full presence?
He said: the current trajectory — two to four weeks.
She said: I want to be here for that too.
He said: I know. We will be.
She thought about the we. About the specific quality of we in that sentence — not a formal we, not a we of professional collaboration. The we of two people who had decided to be present for the same things.
She thought: we will be.
She thought: yes.
They stood in front of the school for a while longer. The northeast district was running its morning activities around them: vendors, people going to work, children going to school — not this school, the building was not yet in use, but the other schools in the district. She thought about children going to school in the northeast district, in the buildings that had been there for a century, under the violet sky.
She thought: they do not know that this building was at forty percent presence six months ago. They do not know about the mechanism or the Accord or the sixty years. They are simply going to school in the northeast district, which is what people did here.
She thought: that is correct. They should not have to carry the history. The history is in the record. The record exists so that the history is held somewhere other than in the daily lives of the people who just want to go to school.
She thought: the record is doing its job.
She thought: the building is doing its job.
She thought: we did ours.
They walked back through the northeast district toward the workspace. She took out her notebook and drew the upper floors as they were now: visible, clear, the details of the stone present rather than uncertain. She added a note: Thursday, week 38. School at 97 percent.
She thought: I will keep drawing it. Every time I come back. Until it is at full presence and then I will draw it again at full presence and put the drawing beside this one.
She thought: that is also a record. Personal rather than official. The kind that shows what it meant to be here for it.
She thought: I want to make that record.
She thought: I am making it.
She put the notebook away and walked through the northeast district with Caelan and thought about all the records being made, official and personal, in both cities, by all the people who had been paying attention.
She thought: we are making a new history. Not just recording the old one. Making the new one.
She thought: that is what the after is. The making of the new history.
She thought: I want to make it well.
She intended to.
The day the school reached full presence was a Tuesday.
She had been tracking the readings every morning and had known it was close — the previous Thursday it had been at ninety-eight point four percent, and the rate of recovery had been approximately a fraction of a percent per day. She had calculated on Monday evening that Tuesday was likely.
She was in Nocturne before the workspace opened.
Caelan was already there. He had seen the morning readings first.
He said: ninety-nine point eight.
She said: close enough.
They went to the school.
She had seen this building at forty percent and fifty percent and seventy percent and eighty-five and ninety-seven. She knew what it looked like at every stage of its recovery. She had drawn it at each stage.
At ninety-nine point eight it was — there. Completely there. The upper floors fully present, the stone as solid as the lower floors, the carved window frames as clear as any building in the district. No uncertainty. No the quality of something at the edges of real. Simply: a building.
She stood in front of it for a long time.
She thought about Tomas Ren, who had grown up here in this district and had attended this school before it was the school she was looking at — before it had been built, actually, before the Engine, before any of this. She thought about the version of the school that Tomas Ren would have known.
She thought: he built something that made it possible for his school to come back to itself.
She thought: he did not know that. He could not have known that the Engine would be suppressed and then restored and that the restoration would recover his old district's buildings. He built what was right because it was right.
She thought: that is the only way to build. Not for the outcome you predict. For the rightness of the design.
She thought: I have been trying to do the same thing.
She thought: the buildings are back.
She drew the school. She drew it carefully, taking forty minutes, getting the upper floors right — the carved stone, the window proportions, the specific quality of the northeast district's craftspeople who had built it. She added a date and a note: Week 39. Full presence.
She looked at the drawing.
She looked at the building.
She thought: we did this.
She thought: everyone who was part of this did this.
She thought: I am glad I was part of it.
He was standing beside her when she finished the drawing. He looked at it over her shoulder.
He said: it is good.
She said: it is a record.
He said: yes. Your records are always specific.
She thought: specific is what I have always been. Specific is what the work requires.
She said: specific matters.
He said: yes.
She put the notebook away. She looked at the school one more time.
She thought: ninety-nine point eight percent. Close enough is not the same as full presence. But in this case — this building, this district, this morning — it was enough.
She thought: it is enough.
She thought: I will come back when it is fully one hundred. I will draw it again.
She thought: and then I will come back again. And again. Not because it needs watching — it is recovered, it is there. But because this place has become mine through the watching of it. Through the Tuesday and Thursday and Friday visits and the drawings and the monitoring and the notation lessons in the northeast district and the preserved fruit from the market.
She thought: I am here because I chose to be. This place is mine because I chose it.
She thought: that is what belonging looks like when it is not inherited. It looks like this. Showing up, repeatedly, until the place is yours.
She thought: I showed up.
She thought: it is mine now.
She thought: that is more than I knew to want.
She told Mirel about the school that evening.
Mirel was writing — she was always writing, always at some stage of the account. But she looked up when Aveline came in, and she said: the school.
She said: full presence.
Mirel said: today.
She said: this morning.
Mirel was quiet for a moment. Then she said: I want to write a piece about it.
She said: yes. You should.
Mirel said: just the school. Not the whole context — the context is in the previous pieces. Just the school and what it means that it is back.
She thought about a piece that was just the school. The specific building, the specific district, the specific people who had learned there and moved out and would presumably move back in as the building was understood to be recovered. The specific meaning of one building's return.
She said: yes. That is the right piece.
Mirel said: I will need the history. Tomas Ren.
She said: I have it. I wrote the piece about the original engineers.
Mirel said: I know. I have read it. I want to extend it — specifically for the school.
She said: I will send you everything.
Mirel said: and I want a quote from him.
She looked at her.
Mirel said: from Caelan. About what the school means to him specifically. He grew up in the northeast district. He remembers when the upper floors began to go uncertain. He has been watching this building for years.
She thought about asking Caelan for a quote about what the school meant to him. She thought about the specific quality of someone who had been watching a building fade for years and was now watching it come back.
She said: I will ask him.
She asked him through the relay that evening.
He was quiet for a moment.
Then he said: the building was at forty percent presence when I began the serious work of trying to change the mechanism. I used to pass it on my way to the monitoring station. I stopped looking at it after a while because looking at it was — not discouraging. It reminded me what was at stake. That is too heavy a thing to carry every day. So I stopped looking directly and I kept working.
She said: do you want me to send that to Mirel?
He said: yes. That is accurate.
She sent it.
Mirel's piece published ten days later. It was shorter than the others — twelve paragraphs — and it was specifically about the school. About Tomas Ren, who had attended it before the Engine was built. About the mechanism and the sixty years. About the recovery. About the building at forty percent and the building at full presence.
About a man who had stopped looking at it so the weight would not be too heavy. About the building being back.
The response was the largest Mirel had received for any single piece.
She thought: that is because it is specific.
She thought: specific things reach people. Not the abstract account. The specific school. The specific person who stopped looking because looking was too heavy.
She thought: Mirel understands this. Mirel has always understood this. That is why I gave her the story.
She thought: the story found the right person to tell it.
She thought: that is also part of how things work out. The right people in the right places.
She thought: I am glad of all of them.
The fortieth week brought something she had not anticipated.
A letter from the school.
Not to her specifically — to the Institute, as the organization that had been responsible for the restoration work. The letter was from the school's administrative director, who had been managing the closed building since the upper floors had become too uncertain to use. The letter said: the upper floors are ready. We are reopening the building. We would like to invite the people who made this possible to attend the reopening.
She read the letter and felt something she recognized from the first time she had seen the second threshold data: relief that had been waiting so long to arrive that she had not known she was still holding it.
She said yes immediately.
The reopening was on a Friday, two weeks later. Both cities attended through the relay — the Institute had arranged a connection that would allow both the Nocturne event and a simultaneous Meridian gathering to be present for each other. It was smaller than the memorial or the Covenant ratification or any of the formal occasions. Forty people. The families of two of the names on Caelan's list who had connections to the school. The school's current staff. The northeast district preservation society. The engineering team.
And her. And Caelan. And her mother, who had crossed into Nocturne for the first time since coming out of The Between.
She had not planned for her mother to come. Marcelline had asked, three days before the reopening, whether she could.
She said: of course.
Her mother crossed for the first time and stood in the northeast district and looked at the school, and the expression on her face was the one that was new and very old at the same time, and she did not say anything for a long moment.
Then she said: it looks like the pre-construction photographs.
Aveline said: yes. The recovery restored it to its original configuration.
Her mother said: I used those photographs in the documentation.
Aveline said: I know.
Her mother stood in front of the building for a while. Then she said: good.
The reopening was brief and deliberately simple. The school director spoke for five minutes. Caelan spoke for three: about the northeast district and what the school had meant to the community and about what it meant that the upper floors were back. He did not mention his great-uncle — she had asked him if he wanted to and he had said not today, today is for the community — but she thought about the teacher who had been erased and who had worked with people at this school, and she thought: he would have approved of today.
The upper floors were opened. The school director led a small group through them — she and Caelan and her mother and two of the family representatives. They walked through the hallways and looked at the classrooms and stood at the windows of the upper floors and looked out at the northeast district, the old buildings and the violet sky and the market with the preserved fruit and all of it.
Her mother stood at a window for a long time.
She came to stand beside her.
Her mother said: the original engineers saw this view.
She said: yes.
Her mother said: they built something that lasted long enough to be restored.
She said: yes. They did.
Her mother was quiet for a moment. Then she said: so did I.
She looked at her mother.
She thought: yes. You built something that lasted. You carried it for nine years in a space between worlds and you came out and you finished it and it lasted.
She thought: I am the product of that. Among other things, I am the product of that.
She said: yes. You did.
Her mother looked at the violet sky.
She said: it is a good sky.
She thought: yes. It is a good sky. Silver-blue and violet and both of them simply the sky.
She thought: both cities, both skies, both real.
She thought: we are here.
She thought: we are all here.
She walked home through the northeast district after the reopening.
Not the crossing zone — Caelan was going through later and she was walking first, wanting the time in the city alone, the specific quality of walking through a place you belonged to.
She walked past the preserved fruit market and past the craftspeople's buildings and past the older ones whose stonework she had drawn in her notebook, and she walked under the violet sky that was simply the sky, and she thought about everything.
She thought: eight months ago I was sitting in front of a mirror at half past eleven and a man appeared in it and told me there was a second layer of text in a document I was about to sign.
She thought: eight months is not very long.
She thought: it is exactly as long as it needed to be.
She thought about all the people who had done the work over all the years before her — the original engineers and Tomas Ren and her mother and Orin and Evelisse and Caelan across the years — and she thought about the eight months that she had added to the chain.
She thought: my part was eight months. Others' parts were decades. All of them together made this.
She thought: the school is open.
She thought: the Engine is doing what it was built to do.
She thought: both cities are stable and recovering and learning each other.
She thought: I am in both of them.
She thought: the sky above me is both skies.
She stopped in the middle of the northeast district street and looked up at the violet sky and thought: this is mine. Not by inheritance. By choice and work and presence and all the ordinary days of showing up.
She thought: that is the best kind of belonging.
She walked on through her city, under her sky, toward the crossing zone, and thought about Thursday, which was always coming, and about all the Thursdays after that.
She thought: good.
She thought: this is exactly right.
She crossed back into Meridian as the afternoon turned toward evening, and the silver-blue sky opened above her, and the violet was at its edges, and both of them were hers, and she walked home thinking about nothing in particular and everything at once, which was the specific quality of someone who was exactly where they chose to be.
