The box in the storage room had been there for nine years.
Aveline had known this. She had always known there was a box of her mother's things, properly labeled and catalogued, in the cedar-lined room at the back of the house. She had known it the way you know about a thing you have decided not to examine: with a precise and deliberate avoidance that takes more effort, in the end, than just looking would have.
She went in on the morning after the dinner at House Veyr, not because she had planned to but because she found herself in front of the storage room door and the decision had apparently already been made, somewhere below the level of conscious deliberation.
The key was on the household ring. She let herself in.
The box was where it had always been: near the back, on the second shelf, under the label that said M.C. — Engineering Reference Materials. Not personal effects. Not keepsakes. Her mother's version of sentiment had always expressed itself through technical materials, and the label reflected this with a precision that was, in its way, exactly like her.
She carried the box to the kitchen table and opened it.
The first layer was what she expected: reference books, most of them marked in Marcelline's quick hand with annotations and disagreements and the occasional strongly-worded marginal commentary that had been one of her mother's more characteristic qualities. A set of engineering diagrams in protective sleeves. A folder of correspondence with colleagues at the Technical Institute.
The second layer was the four engineering notebooks she had already found and read. She set them aside.
The third layer, at the bottom of the box, wrapped in the linen they used for fragile documents, was something she had not expected.
A set of letters. Personal letters, written in an unfamiliar hand, on paper she didn't recognize. The texture and the color were slightly different from the papers she had grown up with — as though the paper had been made under a different sky's light, calibrated to different conditions.
She unfolded the first letter.
The handwriting was careful and slightly compressed — the writing of someone who had trained themselves to be precise in small spaces. She had seen this handwriting before. On a piece of paper pushed under her door. On a glass surface in the soft seconds before a convergence closed.
The letters were from Caelan Veyr.
There were eleven of them. They were dated across a period of approximately two years, ending six months before her mother's disappearance. They were not, she found as she read through them, romantic in nature. They were the correspondence of two people working on the same problem from different sides: technical, specific, punctuated with the occasional observation that revealed, between the precision, that both writers were also human beings with feelings about what they were doing and why.
Her mother had written in the margins of two of them. Small annotations, the same way she annotated technical texts. In one margin she had written: he understands the mathematics better than anyone I have found on this side. In another: I think he actually believes it can be done. So do I.
Aveline sat at the kitchen table and read all eleven letters.
Then she sat for a moment in the quiet of the house and thought about what it meant that her mother had corresponded with a man in a parallel city for two years, and that the man had subsequently found her daughter in a mirror, and that the chain of these events had been set in motion by her mother before her disappearance.
She thought about her mother at eight years old, sitting beside her on the piano bench and showing her where to place her hands. Her mother at twelve, bent over an engineering diagram at this same table, explaining the way resonance systems behaved differently at different scales. Her mother's laugh, which had always seemed too large for the careful rooms of House Corvayne, which had laughed with her whole body when something struck her as genuinely funny, which was something Aveline had inherited along with the technical knowledge and the anomaly-detection instincts.
The last time she had seen her: a Tuesday morning, ordinary in every way, her mother in her working coat with ink on her left hand as always, saying she would be back by dinner.
She had not come back by dinner.
For nine years, Aveline had not let herself be fully angry about this, because anger required accepting the loss as a loss, and she had never been entirely certain it was. There had been no body. No proper explanation. Just: she was there and then she was not there, and the version of events that House Corvayne had accepted had always felt less like a conclusion and more like a place where the official record had decided to stop.
She had stopped there too, for nine years, because stopping there was survivable.
She was not stopping there anymore.
She folded the letters back into their protective linen and put them in the locked drawer of her writing desk, with the notebook and the clock and the paper with Nocturne written on it. Then she went to the piano in the sitting room, which no one else in the house played and which was therefore always exactly as she had left it, and sat down.
She played for a long time. Not anything specific. Just playing, the way she had learned from the woman who had taught her that some things needed to be felt in the hands before they needed to be thought in the head.
She played until the afternoon light changed in the windows.
Then she stopped.
She thought about the eleventh letter — the last one Caelan had written, six months before her mother disappeared. She had read it three times. Most of it was technical. But in the last paragraph, he had written:
I know what we are trying to do will require more time than we thought. I know the situation in Nocturne is worsening in ways that make patience difficult. But your instinct that the equation can be balanced — that neither city needs to diminish for the other to stabilize — is the right instinct. I believe you. We will find the way.
She believed this too. She had believed it since she read the second layer of the Accord and understood what it was designed to do and felt, clearly and without ambiguity, that the design was wrong. Not wrong in the sense of evil. Wrong in the sense of incomplete. A solution that had misunderstood the problem it was solving, because the person who designed it had not been willing to consider all the possibilities.
She was willing.
Tomorrow: platform seven. The long window. Ten, twelve minutes, Caelan had said.
She spent the rest of the afternoon in practical preparation. She reviewed the convergence window timing on the calibration device Orin had given her. She compared the technical notation in the eleventh letter with what she had transcribed from the Accord's second layer. She compiled the questions she needed to ask and ordered them by priority, because ten minutes was not long and she intended to use every second of it.
At dinner, her father mentioned that the Accord signing date was confirmed. She said the appropriate things.
After dinner, she went back to her room and sat in the chair by the window and looked out at the Meridian sky, which was turning the colors of the city's evening — the silver-blue deepening toward something richer as the daylight changed, the sky-rail lines catching the last of the day's illumination.
She thought about another sky — deep violet, a different quality of darkness, beautiful in a different register. She had seen it now in the station's high windows, above the convergence zone. She had seen the buildings of Nocturne through the zone's shimmer. She had held a hand across the boundary and felt what real meant when you had been uncertain of it.
Her mother had named it. Had written: a city under a different sky should have its own name.
She turned out the lamp. In the dark, the city outside her window was quieter, the sky-rail sounds less frequent, the clocktower in the distance marking the hours with its two-hundred-and-forty-year patience. She lay in the quiet and thought about her mother writing in the margins of someone else's letters, adding her observations to someone else's thinking, contributing to something larger than herself with the natural ease of someone who had never needed the work to be hers alone to find it worthwhile.
She fell asleep with this thought, and when she woke at midnight to the clock in the hall, the thought was still there, clear and present.
She knew why she was going to platform seven tomorrow. She knew what she was going for.
She slept.
She woke early to the sound of the sky-rail on its first morning run, before the house was fully awake, and lay for a moment in the grey light thinking about her mother.
Not about the Accord or the Engine or the second layer. Just about her mother as a person: the working coat with the ink on the left hand. The way she moved through technical problems as though they were old friends being reintroduced. The habit of writing in margins, always, even on documents she was not supposed to mark. The laugh that was too large for the rooms of this house.
She thought about Orin Vale saying she had a gift for describing complex resonance relationships. She thought about Caelan Veyr writing: your instinct that the equation can be balanced is the right instinct.
She thought about her mother deciding to go into The Between, and what that decision must have cost, and what she must have believed she was accomplishing by making it.
She had gone in to reach both access points from a single location. She had gone in because the alternative was to not finish. And she had not finished, but she had not been erased either — she was there, coherent, waiting, the resonance signature of a living person in a space between worlds.
Her mother had chosen the Between over the alternative.
Aveline thought about what the alternative had been: leaving the work incomplete, knowing what the Accord would do, knowing that at some future point a future Corvayne would be brought to sign it and would do so without understanding and the ceremony would proceed and Nocturne would continue to diminish. Leaving that in place.
Her mother had chosen not to leave that in place. She had chosen the Between.
Aveline thought: she made that choice alone. Without anyone's help, without anyone's knowledge. She walked into that space carrying years of work and the conviction that the equation could be balanced, and she went because the work was nearly complete and she was nearly out of time.
She thought: I am not going to let that have been for nothing.
This was not a new thought. She had been thinking variations of it for days. But this morning it felt different — clearer, less like intention and more like fact. Not I am going to try. I am not going to let it have been for nothing. Those were different sentences.
She got up. She dressed. She went downstairs and was ordinary and composed and ate breakfast and listened to her father talk about the day's business.
She checked the calibration device over her morning tea. The convergence window was this evening — seven hours from now. Ten to twelve minutes, if Caelan had estimated correctly.
Ten minutes was enough time to ask everything she needed to ask.
She had her list ready. She had been refining it since the first night at platform seven. The questions were ordered by what she needed most urgently: the Nocturne side of the reconfiguration equation first, the location of the Nocturne Engine access point second, the timeline of Nocturne's current destabilization third.
And then, if there was time, the question she had decided she was allowed to ask: What did your mother — what did his side of the correspondence look like. She had eleven letters from him to Marcelline. She wanted to know if her mother had written back.
She thought about this as she walked through the morning city — through the ordinary machinery of Meridian running its ordinary day — and felt, underneath all the practical thinking, something that was not quite excitement and not quite fear and was perhaps the particular quality of readiness that came from having prepared for something for as long as you needed to prepare for it and being, finally, ready.
The sky above her was silver-blue and familiar.
She looked at it and thought about a different sky, the same city, different light.
She thought: this evening.
She bought a pastry from a vendor on the eastern boulevard and ate it walking and thought about her questions and felt, for the first time since any of this had started, something that she recognized with some surprise as anticipation.
The day passed in the way days passed when you were waiting for something: the ordinary mechanisms of it performing their ordinary functions while the part of your attention that actually mattered was somewhere else. She had two appointments — a fitting consultation, mercifully brief, and a brief meeting with her father's secretary about the formal dinner that was apparently now also part of the betrothal calendar — and she moved through both with her usual competence and arrived home in the late afternoon with enough time to review her list one more time before going to the station.
She read through the questions. She numbered them in order of priority. She estimated the time each would take and found that, if the window was ten minutes as Caelan had suggested, she could get through most of them.
She put on her walking coat. She locked the house door behind her. She walked through the early evening streets of Meridian toward the old northern station, and she was aware, for the first time, that she was walking toward something rather than away from it.
She had been walking away from things for nine years — away from the empty room, away from the locked box, away from the specific quality of absence that her mother's disappearance had left in the house and in her. She had been performing ordinary life over the top of that avoidance with great skill and great efficiency and great dedication.
She thought: that ends tonight.
Not dramatically. Not with any special flourish. Just: she was going to platform seven, and she was going to ask Caelan Veyr what he needed from her to fix the mechanism, and she was going to find out what her mother had been working toward, and she was going to complete it.
The station entrance was ahead of her. She took out the calibration device. The window was twelve minutes tonight — Caelan had been right about the cycle.
She adjusted her coat. She walked in.
The city hummed around her as she entered the station, the faint resonance of the Meridian Engine that she had spent twenty-two years not noticing. She noticed it now. She noticed it the way you notice a heartbeat when you finally think to listen for it — always there, so constant it had become invisible.
She walked through the concourse. She found platform seven. She walked to the loading bay where the air had a different texture.
She waited.
She did not wait long.
The zone formed the way it had the first time: gradually, in the way that a room changes temperature, a shift in quality rather than a visible transformation. The air in the loading bay became what it had been before — two things at once, two textures layered over each other, the resonance hum of Meridian and beneath it something else, the different resonance of a city calibrated to a different standard.
And in the windows above the bay: the deep violet sky.
She stood at the edge of the zone and breathed slowly. She was aware that her hands were slightly cold, which was a stress response she had never entirely eliminated and had learned to simply note and move past.
Then footsteps, from the other side.
He stepped into the zone and she saw him for the second time in person, and the same thing happened as the first time: the difference between the mirror-version and the real-version resolved itself immediately. He occupied space. He had a presence that was not a reflection but a person.
He looked at her for a moment. She looked at him.
"I have a list," she said, because she had decided to start with the practical, which was where she was always most comfortable.
Something in his face did the not-quite-a-smile thing again. "Of course you do," he said. Not unkindly. Just: of course.
"Ten questions, ordered by priority. I estimated we have twelve minutes."
"Closer to thirteen," he said. "The Engine variance ran long tonight."
"Better." She took out the notebook she had brought specifically for this. "I'll start with the Nocturne access point location and the current state of the Nocturne side of the reconfiguration equation. Then the timeline of Nocturne's destabilization. Then—"
"Yes," he said. "All right." He sat down on the edge of an old cargo pallet that had been there since the station closed. "Ask your questions."
She sat on the opposite one. They were close in the zone — the zone was not large — and the light in it was the particular mixed light of two skies, neither silver-blue nor deep violet but something that had no name yet.
She asked her questions. He answered them, precisely and without evasion, with the kind of information sharing that came from someone who had been waiting to share it with the right person for a very long time.
Thirteen minutes. It was the longest convergence window she had experienced.
At the end of it, she had filled four pages of her notebook with the Nocturne side of what her mother had been building toward. She had the access point location. She had the timeline. She had the mathematics, written in his careful hand in the spaces between her questions.
And she had — in the last forty seconds, before the zone began to close — asked the question she had decided she was allowed to ask.
"Did she write back? My mother. Did you have letters from her, like the ones I found?"
He had been quiet for a moment. "Eleven letters," he said. "Matching yours."
"She wrote back."
"She always wrote back." He looked at her steadily. "You have her handwriting. The letters. The precision of it."
The zone had closed a moment later.
She walked home through the ordinary Meridian evening and thought about her mother always writing back, and thought about handwriting, and thought about eleven letters matched by eleven more.
She thought: I am going to find her.
She thought: I am going to finish this.
You've reached the end of this chapter
