Lyra had a very good reason for being at the campus café on a Thursday afternoon.
She was working on it.
The reason, as she was currently constructing it, involved a plausible chain of causation beginning with the fact that her usual afternoon tea spot had been inexplicably closed — this was true, she had walked past it, the door had been locked with no explanation posted — and proceeding through the logical necessity of finding an alternative location to drink tea, given that tea was something she required in the afternoons, and arriving at the campus café as one of the available alternatives. This was a valid chain of causation. It was also a chain she had constructed after already being inside the café and ordering, which was not typically how causation worked, but she was revising it in real time and she felt the logic held if she didn't examine the sequencing too carefully.
The more honest version was simpler: Aiden worked Thursdays. She knew his schedule with the comprehensive accuracy of someone who had been paying attention to it for several weeks and was not prepared to examine why. She was here because he was here, and she was not ready to state that plainly even to herself, so she was building the alternative causation chain instead.
She found a table, ordered her tea, and settled with her notebook open in front of her.
The notebook, today, was not for working. She was aware of this. She opened it to a blank page and held the pen above it and did not write anything, because the pen was a prop for an activity she was not actually doing, and she had decided that she was done lying to herself about small things even if she was not ready to stop lying to herself about large ones.
She was here because of Aiden Cross. She was not working. She was sitting in a café watching a person make coffee drinks, which was apparently what she did now.
She looked around the room while Aiden was occupied behind the counter.
The café had a particular afternoon population — the post-lunch slump crowd, people who needed caffeine to bridge the gap between noon and evening, people working on laptops with the focused intensity of those who had given themselves a specific amount of time in which to complete a specific amount of work. She catalogued them with the automatic efficiency of long habit: the threat assessment she had learned to perform in every new environment. Nobody registered as dangerous. Nobody registered as a Siren Hunter, which was what she was actually looking for, with a particular sharpness since the warning signs she had encountered last week.
Then she catalogued the non-threatening.
The girl with the silver-white hair was at a table by the window, laptop open, back perfectly straight. Lyra had seen her before — on campus, in passing, the kind of person you noticed because they moved through space with a quality of intentionality that most people lacked. She was doing something on her laptop with focused precision, and she had a cup of tea at the upper right corner of her workspace that she reached for without looking, which meant she had drunk this tea in this configuration many times before.
Lyra looked at her for a moment. Then looked at Aiden.
Something about the way the silver-haired girl sat — the particular quality of her stillness, the slight tension at her jaw that was controlled rather than relaxed — reminded her of what Aiden had said once, when she had asked about the other frequencies he heard on campus. He hadn't said much. But he had said: *there are a few that are more complicated than others.* He had not elaborated and she had not pushed, because she understood the value of not pushing.
She stored this as: possibly relevant.
The other girl came in through the side door.
Lyra would have noticed her in any room. Not because of visual drama — the girl was quiet in her appearance, auburn hair and a careful way of moving that was not hesitant but precise. She moved the way people moved when they were navigating by something other than sight, which Lyra understood after a moment was because she was: the girl's eyes, amber and clear, were not finding anchor points the way sighted eyes did. She touched the edge of a chair as she passed it. Counted steps.
Blind. Lyra filed this.
The blind girl found a table with the accuracy of someone who had done it many times before and sat down, and she placed both hands flat on the table and tilted her head at a slight angle, and Lyra — whose hearing was not quite human in its register — heard her doing something that most people couldn't hear: she was listening. Not passively. Actively, deliberately, with the focused engagement of a person for whom sound was the primary source of information about the world.
Aiden came out from behind the counter.
Lyra watched him see the blind girl. Watched him see the silver-haired girl. Watched him pause — half a beat, not more, not enough that anyone not specifically attending to him would have noticed it — before he resumed his movement through the room with the same even quality as always.
He stopped at Lyra's table. Looked at her the way he looked at things he was not surprised by. "You don't usually come here," he said.
She looked at the blank page in the notebook. Looked at him. She sent: *my usual place was closed.*
His mouth did the thing that was not quite a smile. "Right," he said.
She sent: *the girl by the window.*
A pause. Very short. "Serena Sterling."
She sent: *you know her.*
"Yes."
She sent: *and the one at the other table.*
Another pause. "Evelyn Vance."
"You know them both," she said — not sending this time, writing in the notebook and turning it to face him, because some things deserved to be seen.
He looked at what she had written. Looked at her. "Yes," he said.
She wrote: *how many people are there.*
He looked at the question for a moment. Then he said, quietly: "I'm going to get your tea," and went back behind the counter.
Lyra looked at the notebook. At the question she had written, which he had not answered, which was itself an answer of a kind. She looked at Serena Sterling by the window, who had looked up from her laptop when Aiden came to Lyra's table and whose expression she could not read from this distance but whose attention was visible. She looked at Evelyn Vance at the other table, whose head had tilted toward Lyra's direction with the focused listening quality she had identified, whose hands had tightened slightly on the table surface.
She sent a thought — not to Aiden, just into the frequency, a private observation: *they know about each other. Or they're learning.*
The room had a particular quality now that it had not had when she arrived. A triangulation. Three points of awareness, each of them oriented slightly toward the same center.
Aiden brought her tea. Set it down. "Tomorrow, library?" he said, quietly.
She nodded.
He went back to the counter.
Serena Sterling had closed her laptop to half. Lyra had excellent peripheral awareness and she used it now: the silver-haired girl was watching Aiden behind the counter with an expression that was controlled to the point of being almost illegible but which, to Lyra, who had been reading people's subtle signals for years out of necessity, registered as: *cataloguing. assessing. wanting.*
Lyra felt something shift in her chest — not quite jealousy, because jealousy required a claim she had not made, but something adjacent. She examined it with the clinical detachment she brought to her own emotional states when they were inconvenient, which was often. She identified it as: awareness. She was aware of Serena Sterling in a new way. As a presence in a space Lyra had, until today, thought of as containing only herself and Aiden.
She looked at Evelyn Vance.
Evelyn was not looking at Aiden — she couldn't, in the visual sense. But her attention was directed toward the counter in a way that was not random. She was tracking the sound of him, Lyra understood. The particular sounds he made moving through the space behind the counter — she had learned them, or was learning them, in the patient systematic way of someone who mapped the world through sound.
Lyra sent a thought at Aiden's back: *you know that both of them are watching you right now.*
Behind the counter, without turning, Aiden's movements slowed by a fraction.
She sent: *and you're going to pretend you don't.*
He resumed his normal pace.
She sent: *is there a fourth one.*
A longer pause in his movement. Then he resumed again.
Lyra looked around the room with the expanded perception she usually kept contained — not sending it out, just letting it receive. And in the corner near the window, where the afternoon light came in at its low October angle and made everything at the edge of visibility slightly uncertain —
She saw her.
Not clearly. Not the way you saw someone standing in good light. More the way you saw something that was almost there — the suggestion of a shape, the particular quality of a space that had a presence in it that was not quite physical. Lavender, she thought. The suggestion of it. And an expression she recognized from her own mirror in the years when she had let herself look: *this person is mine and I am watching to see who else thinks so.*
A ghost, she thought. An actual ghost.
She turned back to her tea.
Sent, to Aiden's back: *I see your ghost. She's more jealous than I am.*
Behind the counter, for the first time in Lyra's experience of him, Aiden Cross fumbled a cup. Caught it. Set it down with more care than the situation required.
She allowed herself something she almost never permitted: a full, genuine smile. It arrived without warning and lasted approximately three seconds before she contained it, but it was there, and it was real, and it tasted like winning a game she hadn't known she was playing until she was already ahead.
She picked up her pen and wrote in the notebook, on the blank page she had been not-working on for twenty minutes:
*Four.*
She looked at the word.
Added: *Including me.*
Looked at that.
Closed the notebook.
