The headphones were on the table between them.
Lyra had placed them there deliberately — not ostentatiously, not making a statement of it, just setting them at the midpoint of the library table the way you set something down that you were still thinking about. She had taken them out of her bag when she arrived, before he had gotten there, and she had held them for a moment and then placed them where she placed them and opened her notebook and pretended to work.
She had not worked.
She had been writing about frequency. Not proto-Indo-European frequency, not the linguistic analysis she had been ostensibly focused on for the past several weeks — the frequency of a person. She had been trying to describe Aiden Cross in the language of sound, which was the most accurate language she had for interior things, and she had filled three pages with attempts before arriving at something that satisfied her: a chord that existed in the register below melody, below harmony, below the categories she usually worked in. A chord that was not beautiful in the conventional sense but was present in the way that things were present when they were fundamental rather than decorative.
She was looking at that line when he came in.
The new headphones were immediately visible. She registered them in the same motion as she registered his arrival — the pendulum swing at his collarbone had a different weight now, a lighter swing, the particular physics of something that was less substantial than what it had replaced. The matte black was slightly different too, a shade cheaper, the kind of black that was trying to be the same color rather than simply being it.
He sat down. Opened his book. Did not look at the headphones on the table.
She looked at them. Looked at him. He was reading with the quality she had been cataloguing since October: absorbed, unhurried, not performing anything.
She picked up her pen and wrote in the notebook, turned it to face him: *You could have asked for them back.*
He read it without looking up from his book, which was something she had noticed he could do — register her notebook writing in his peripheral vision and respond without making a production of the response. "I don't want them back."
She wrote: *Why not.*
"I said why not."
*Say it again.*
He looked up then. The grey eyes with the quality she had stopped trying to categorize and started simply receiving. "Because they're yours now," he said. "I don't revise those kinds of decisions."
She looked at him for a moment. Then she wrote: *That's either very principled or very stubborn.*
His mouth did the not-quite-smile thing. "Both," he said. And returned to his book.
She wrote: *The Hunters will come back.*
"I know."
*You have a plan.*
"I'm developing one."
*You can't resolve this alone.*
He set the book down. Looked at her with the full attention rather than the peripheral. "I know," he said. "That's why I'm telling you about it. I need what you know about the Registry's documentation requirements. Specifically the exemption process for entities with established community integration."
She looked at the question. This was not the first time he had asked her for specific knowledge — in the weeks since the rocks he had asked her things about Siren physiology, about Registry procedure, about the specific vulnerabilities in the supernatural oversight system that she had been cataloguing since she first understood she would need to navigate it. But this was different in a specific way she was identifying as she sat with it.
He was asking her to help solve a problem he could not solve alone.
Not asking her to provide information for his plan. Asking her to participate in the construction of the plan because she had knowledge he needed and he knew she had it and he was not pretending otherwise.
She wrote: *The exemption process requires documented community contribution and a sponsoring entity with supernatural registry standing. You have the liaison credentials. You could be the sponsoring entity.*
"That's what I was thinking," he said. "But the documentation for community contribution — what counts? What's the threshold?"
She wrote. He asked. She wrote more. They worked through it the way they had worked through other things — her knowledge and his questions and the back-and-forth of two people who were building something together rather than one person directing and one executing. She had done the latter many times and had not, until recently, had a comparison point for the former.
The comparison was significant.
Being consulted felt different from being used. She had not had adequate language for the difference before, had not been able to articulate it beyond the vague sense that some interactions left her with more of herself than others. Now she had a specific example to measure against. This was the kind that left her with more.
An hour into the session, she was mid-sentence on a paragraph about the Registry's regional variance in documentation standards when she sent — without deciding to — a thought into the space between them: *I don't remember the last time someone asked my opinion on something that mattered.*
He stopped writing.
Looked up.
"I'm asking now," he said.
Three words. She looked at them in the air where they had just been spoken and thought about all the ways those three words were doing more work than three words usually did.
Not *I hear you* or *that must be difficult* or any of the responses that acknowledged a feeling and moved past it. He had said: *I'm asking now.* Present tense, active, a statement of what was currently happening rather than a response to what she had expressed about the past. He had received the information she had sent and turned it into: *this is what I am doing, right now, with you.*
She looked at the notebook. At the page she had not been writing on while she processed this. She picked up the pen.
Wrote: *I know.*
They continued.
The session extended past its usual endpoint — the library's ambient sounds shifted around them through the afternoon and into early evening, the particular changes in acoustic that she had learned to track as reliable time markers. Other students came and went. The reading room filled and quieted and filled again. She and Aiden remained at the corner table, working through the documentation framework for a supernatural registry exemption, and she thought: this is what it is to be treated like a person with knowledge worth having.
Not a threat. Not an asset. A person with knowledge worth having.
At the end of the session she put the headphones back in her bag. He watched her do it without comment, with the quality of someone watching a decision being made and respecting it.
She wrote: *All right.*
He looked at the two words. "All right is what?"
She thought about how to explain this in two additional words or fewer. She couldn't. She wrote: *Everything. The headphones. The Registry. The — * She stopped. Crossed out the dash. Wrote instead: *I've stopped trying to find the exit route.*
He read it carefully. The reading that was not quick processing but actual attending, the kind she had come to depend on without acknowledging the dependence.
"Okay," he said.
Not *what does that mean* or *are you sure* or any of the responses that would have required her to explain further. Just: okay. Received. Noted.
She closed the notebook.
They left the library at the same time, which happened naturally now — neither of them manufactured the simultaneity, it simply occurred because they had been working in the same space and finished at approximately the same time and walked in approximately the same direction. She had her bag. He had his. The November evening was cold in the way November evenings were cold at Cresthaven, which was to say thoroughly, with the particular intention of a coastal winter that had committed to its season.
She became aware, approximately two blocks from the library, that she was walking in a direction that had no particular destination for her. Her apartment was the other way. The café where she occasionally got tea was the other way. The linguistics building, the only other place she reliably went, was the other way.
She was walking in the direction that led toward the café where he worked, the café she had walked into on a Thursday afternoon in October with a carefully constructed alternative causation chain that she had known was not the real reason she was there.
She stopped.
He had gone two steps further before he noticed and stopped as well, turning slightly.
She did not construct an alternative causation chain. She did not explain. She looked at the direction she had been walking, looked at him, and turned around and walked toward her apartment.
Behind her, she heard him continue in his direction.
But she was smiling.
Not the three-second smile from the café — something quieter, something that stayed. The smile of a person who had caught themselves doing the thing they had stopped pretending they weren't doing, and had found that acknowledging it was easier than she had expected.
She put her hand in her bag as she walked. Found the headphones.
Held them for the rest of the walk home.
