She arrived at Station Two early.
The Garden Station occupied the north side of the Conservatory's outdoor space — the small formal garden that the music faculty maintained with the particular attention of people who believed that beautiful environments produced better art and had the institutional budget to test the hypothesis. In November the garden was past its seasonal peak: the beds were put to rest, the roses pruned to their winter architecture, the ground covered in the particular mulch that protected what was sleeping underneath. But the festival lights had been strung through the arbor and along the path edges, and the cold air carried the ghost of the last chrysanthemums, and the space had the quality of things that were beautiful in their off-season in a way that was different from their beauty in full operation.
Evelyn stood on the path and mapped it.
This was what she did in new or changed environments: allocated a few minutes to the systematic registration of what was there. The crunch of the gravel path underfoot. The way the festival lights created a different acoustic effect than the natural light would — not warmth exactly, but a slight dampening of the sound of the air itself, as though the presence of the lights changed the physics of the space by a small amount. The smell: mulch, cold air, the distant warm cider from the main plaza, something faintly floral that was either the chrysanthemums or her imagination constructing one from memory of this garden in October.
She had been here before. She had been here with Aiden, once, in the afternoon — not a scheduled meeting, just a collision of paths, and they had walked the garden together for twenty minutes and he had described nothing and she had asked him once to identify the smell of a particular flower she couldn't place and he had looked at it and said: *small white ones, I don't know the name,* and she had laughed, which was a thing she didn't do often in new spaces.
She stood on the path and waited.
She heard him come through the garden entrance at precisely fifteen minutes past seven — she had been tracking time by the festival sounds from the main plaza, which gave her reliable intervals. He came through the arbor with the footstep quality she knew better than she knew most acoustic things: even, unhurried, the headphones settled.
He sat beside her on the bench at the path's curve. The bench was stone, cold through her coat. She felt the slight displacement of air when he sat — close, the distance they had arrived at without choosing it.
She had decided what she wanted to use the fifteen minutes for. Not for âm nhạc. Not for the concerto or the piece she was composing or any of the things that existed in the register that was safe because it was professional and shared and did not require her to say anything that could not be framed as being about art.
She said: "What do you do when nobody needs you?"
A pause. Not the short pause of someone thinking — the longer pause of someone encountering a question that had found an accurate target.
"I'm not sure I have much experience with that," he said.
"You're having it now," she said. "Fifteen minutes. Nothing is required of you in this particular space for this particular interval."
"This is a blind date."
"Which I'm choosing to use for this." She folded her hands in her lap. "Can you do that? Just be here without a function."
The pause this time was different — the quality of someone trying something they were not practiced at, like a person attempting a physical movement that their muscle memory had not learned.
"I'll try," he said.
They sat.
The festival lights made their small interference pattern with the garden's acoustic. The cold air settled around them. Someone in the main plaza was playing something on a keyboard — she could hear it, muffled by the Conservatory walls but present, a holiday-adjacent piece played competently by someone who was accompanying a crowd rather than performing for one.
Evelyn noticed, as time passed, that the quality of his sitting changed. Not dramatically — not the obvious relaxation of someone releasing tension they'd been carrying. More subtle. A small recalibration of posture, the particular settling that happened when a person stopped maintaining something and simply occupied space instead.
She held her hands still and said nothing and let the fifteen minutes hold him without requiring anything.
At some point she said: "Iris gave me a message. About something you said to her."
A slight stiffening. "What did she say?"
"That you said: *because I want to.*" She paused. "She communicated it to me through approximately forty minutes of gesture notation in the courtyard last week, which is commitment to a message."
A sound that was not quite a laugh. "She's determined when she has something to say."
"She is." Evelyn turned her face toward him slightly. "Do you say that with us? Not with her. With us."
The silence this time had the quality she had learned to recognize as him approaching something true that he had not yet said.
"No," he said. "I don't say it. But it's still true."
She held this carefully.
"Why don't you say it?"
He was quiet for longer than usual. She waited. She had learned his silences as precisely as she had learned the silences in music — the ones that were rests, necessary and structured, versus the ones that were the music holding its breath before something.
"Because saying it makes it — " He stopped. "When I say things they become real in a specific way. They become things that can be taken back. Or taken advantage of. Or —" Another stop. "I'm more comfortable with the not-saying."
She considered this. "The not-saying protects you."
"Yes."
"From what?"
Another long pause.
"From being wrong," he said. "About what I am to you. What I'm there for. Whether — " He stopped again. The stop this time had a different quality — the stop of someone who had arrived somewhere they hadn't expected to arrive and was standing in the unexpected place without knowing what to do there.
"I'm composing something," she said. She had said this before, in the faculty lounge, but she was saying it now in the garden in the festival lights with the different weight that things had when they were said outside rather than inside. "I've been composing it for a month. It has two voices. I told you before."
"Yes."
"The second voice is a heartbeat. A specific heartbeat." She paused. "I want you to understand what that means without me saying it more plainly, because if I say it more plainly we'll both have to do something with it and I'm not ready for that yet. But I don't want you to not know it exists."
Silence.
Then: "I understand what it means."
She nodded.
They sat in the garden in the festival lights and she heard the quality of him sitting change again — back to the first quality, the settled one, the one that was occupying space without maintaining anything. But with a different texture to it now. As though he had put something down.
"I'm proud of you," he said. Quietly. "What you did with the concerto. What you did with measure thirty-four."
She felt the words arrive with the particular clarity of something she had been waiting for without knowing she was waiting for it.
"Proud," she said. "Of me."
"Yes."
"Is that all?" She paused. "Or also of yourself. A little."
A longer silence. "Maybe a little," he said. "Is that — allowed?"
"Yes," she said. "Absolutely yes. You invested in something and it paid off. You're allowed to feel that." She turned her face more fully toward him. "You're allowed to claim the things you were part of."
The festival organiser's signal came — soft, a small bell, fifteen minutes elapsed.
He stood. She stayed sitting.
She felt his hand come to rest on the back of hers — the same motion as the first time, the same back-of-hand positioning, the same quality of weight. Not Empathic Anchoring. Not the deliberate activation of anything. Just: his hand on hers, brief, chosen.
She felt it from her hand to somewhere central.
"The piece," he said. "When it's done. I want to hear it."
"I know you will," she said. "That's not the question."
"What's the question?"
She thought about this. "Whether you'll understand what I'm saying when you hear it."
"I already do," he said.
He left. She sat in the garden until the sound of his footsteps faded and then she sat for a moment longer and she thought about two voices and a heartbeat and the particular kind of brave that it took to compose someone into your music before you had the words to say what you were doing.
In her inner world: a chord. Single, warm, sustained.
*Oh,* she thought.
*Oh.*
*There it is.*
