He looked at his hands, which were resting on his knees, wet, still. "He talked about you."

She breathed carefully.

"He said you had his eyes for detail," Cassian said. "He said you would come to the system without his limitations, without his assumptions. He said —" He stopped.

"What did he say?"

A pause. Then, quietly: "He said you'd understand why it mattered. Not just as science. As — as a reason to be careful with things."

"He refused. And he left. And some months later there was a fire in the lower laboratory." He said this with the careful flatness of someone recounting something that had been rehearsed in private too many times. "The investigation concluded it was accidental. I believed that for three years."

She looked at him. The light caught the side of his face — the blue-green light of the specimens, making the usual grey of him into something else, something that had more colors in it.

"You don't believe it anymore," she said.

"No."

She looked down at her hands. Her notebooks were still under her coat, slightly damp. Her hands were her father's hands — the same shape, the same length of finger, the same small callus on the right palm from years of work with pruning shears.

"She does," she said quietly.
