Rowan's approach to mechanical assessment was thorough in the way of someone who had learned early that incomplete work came back to find you.
He began at the top of the system — the roof panels and their adjustable louvers, the brass fittings that allowed the angle of incoming light to be modified — and worked his way down through the gear trains and counterweights to the mirror array at floor level. He made notes in the compressed shorthand of an engineer, took measurements at intervals of exactly one foot, and asked questions only when the answers were necessary for the work rather than interesting to him personally, which was a discipline Seraphine recognized and respected.
She worked alongside him in companionable parallel, her botanical assessment proceeding through the same space at its own pace. They had always been good at working together this way — she and Rowan had collaborated on nursery maintenance projects since childhood, and had developed between them a kind of professional shorthand that required very little speech and produced good results.
It was productive. It was also, she found, a relief to have someone beside her who asked nothing of her beyond what she had already agreed to provide.
The hinge housing on the eastern mirror array was the problem that occupied Rowan for most of the morning. The housing was original to the conservatory's construction — mid-century, he estimated, good work but overdue for maintenance — and the bearing surfaces had developed a resistance that would, if left unaddressed, eventually prevent the mirror from tracking through its full range. He explained this to her while she was taking soil cores from the bed adjacent to the array, and she half-listened with the part of her attention not required for the soil work, which was how they had always exchanged information.
"The gear ratio here is unusual," he said, lying on his back under the housing with a lamp held above him. "Someone custom-engineered this. Not standard Elyndorian manufacture."
"My father's notation system is also custom-engineered," she said.
"You think he designed this?"
"Or contributed to it. He and Cassian's father worked together on the original conservatory system, from what I understand." She extracted the core sample and labeled it. "I keep finding evidence of his work here. It's like — reading a book by someone who didn't know you were going to read it."
Rowan was quiet for a moment, the sound of his work filling the space between them — the metallic scrape of bearing surfaces being cleaned, the soft sound of his breathing.
"That sounds either beautiful or terrible," he said.
"Both," she said. Which was becoming, she thought, a word that recurred in Luminara Hall with particular frequency.
They moved to the eastern section of the conservatory mid-morning — the area closest to the doors that led to the east wing, where the mirror array connected to a secondary gear system she hadn't fully mapped. The space here was different from the rest of the conservatory: cooler, the light more even, the plants she had catalogued here showing a different quality of the light-retention phenomenon than the specimens in the northwestern sections.
Rowan was assessing the secondary gear housing when he stopped.
"Sera."
She looked up.
He was crouching beside one of the large rectangular mirrors that formed the array's lower tier — mirrors that were mounted on adjustable brackets set into the wall. He had removed one of the brackets for inspection and behind it, in the cavity in the wall that the bracket had covered, was a recess approximately twelve inches deep and eight inches wide.
Inside the recess was a box.
Copper-colored, small, with the surface quality of brass that had been handled over time — not polished, not neglected, but existing in the middle state of an object that had been put away deliberately and had waited in the dark for the specific hands that were meant to find it. On the lid, engraved in the careful script of someone who had wanted the name to last: *E. Marrow.*
Seraphine put down her soil cores and came to look.
She crouched beside Rowan in front of the wall recess and looked at the box without touching it. The name. The size of it — large enough to hold documents, or a small notebook, or the accumulated evidence of something a woman had decided needed to be hidden rather than destroyed. The position of it — behind a bracket that required specific knowledge and tools to remove, in a section of the conservatory that had clearly received less traffic than the rest.
Evelise Marrow had known this conservatory. She had known it well enough to know that behind this bracket, at this height, was a cavity that would hold a box of this size and that the bracket would be removed only by someone doing exactly what Rowan was doing now.
She had put it here for someone to find. Or she had put it here because it was the safest place she knew.
"That's the woman who died here," Rowan said. Not a question — he had been at Luminara Hall long enough to have heard the name from the staff, and he was the kind of person who listened to what the staff knew.
"Yes," Seraphine said.
They looked at the box.
"You're going to open it," he said.
"I'm going to try."
She lifted it out of the recess carefully, with both hands, the way you lifted things that had been waiting a long time and deserved to arrive somewhere gently. It was heavier than she expected — dense contents, not just paper. She set it on the flat surface of the mirror base and examined the lock.
Rowan, without being asked, handed her a small lens from his tool kit. She looked at the lock mechanism under magnification and felt the specific recognition of a pattern she had encountered before: the same multi-tumbler design as the lock on the west storage room, the same key profile as the lock on the box she had found there. The same type as the east wing doors.
She sat back.
"I know what key opens this," she said.
"Do you have it?"
"Not yet." She thought about the key Cassian had placed on the library table two evenings ago — the small copper key that she had taken and placed in the inner pocket of her work jacket, where it had been ever since. She had not yet used it for anything. She had been waiting, without being entirely sure what she was waiting for.
*This opens everything in this house that you haven't been able to open yet.*
She put her hand into her inner pocket and felt the key there, small and exact and present.
She did not take it out. Not yet. Not here, in the open conservatory where anyone might come through.
She looked at Rowan. He was watching her with the expression of someone who understood that something important was happening and was choosing not to interfere with it.
"I'm going to take it to my room," she said.
"All right."
"Don't mention it to anyone."
"All right." No questions, no caveats. Just: all right. She thought, not for the first time, that Rowan Bell was one of the better people she knew.
She wrapped the box in the cloth she used for specimen transport and placed it in her work bag. Rowan replaced the bracket. They returned to work.
For the rest of the morning and most of the afternoon, she worked with the box sitting in her bag three feet away from her and thought about Evelise Marrow — the woman who had put a box behind a bracket and had not come back to retrieve it. Who had been curious and careful and had seen something she was not supposed to see. Who had left a half-burned page in a room that had been set on fire.
At the end of the working day, Rowan came to her with the gear assessment summary and the expression of someone who had reached a conclusion that required delivery.
"The primary gear train is fine — maintenance, not replacement," he said. "But the secondary system, the one in the eastern section — " He paused. "Someone's modified it. Recently. Not original work. The tolerances are different, the metal is newer, and — " He showed her a small component he had removed, a spacer of some kind. "This was added. It's not part of the original design. I don't know what it does yet."
"When you say recently —"
"Within the last year, maybe two. Not longer." He looked at it. "Someone who knows this system very well made this change. And made it without leaving any documentation in the maintenance records I've been given access to."
Seraphine looked at the small component. "Undocumented modifications to the system that controls how the mirrors move."
"Yes."
They were both quiet for a moment.
"Keep it," she said. "Don't put it back yet."
He nodded and put it in his tool case.
That evening at dinner, Cassian was present. Seraphine watched his eyes move to her work bag when she set it down and noted that he registered its shape — slightly different from usual, a rectangular weight that had not been in it before. He did not ask. She did not mention it.
Lady Maribel served as the conversation's spine, as she always did when presence was required — asking questions about the technical assessment, about the botanical progress, about the timeline for the restoration. Rowan answered honestly and with detail. Seraphine answered honestly and with less.
Cassian said very little, which was normal. But he was quieter than his usual quiet, which was not.
After dinner, Seraphine went directly to her room.
She placed the box on her writing desk and looked at it under lamplight. *E. Marrow.* The name looked different in this light — personal rather than historical, the name of a person rather than a tragedy.
She took the key from her inner pocket and held it beside the box. The profile matched. She was certain.
She did not open it tonight.
Not because she wasn't ready — she was ready, she had been ready since she found it. But she had learned, at Luminara Hall, that timing mattered, that some things wanted to be opened with the right quality of attention rather than just any attention, and that her current state — tired, alert, carrying the weight of the modified gear component and Rowan's careful face — was not the right quality.
She would open it tomorrow. In the morning, in good light, when she had slept and could give it what it deserved.
She wrote in her notebook: *Evelise hid this deliberately. She knew the conservatory well enough to choose this specific location. She knew no one would find it who was not doing exactly the kind of detailed mechanical work that Rowan is doing.*
And then: *She was waiting for someone to look carefully enough to find it.*
She closed the notebook and looked at the box once more.
"I'm looking," she said aloud, to no one, to a woman three years dead who had hidden something for someone who would come and look carefully enough.
The sea was loud against the cliffs tonight. The candle moved in the draft from the window.
In the morning, she would open it.
