She woke at five-fifteen to the smell of them.
It reached her before full consciousness did — a complex floral note, delicate but specific, the kind of scent that belonged to a particular memory rather than a general category. She had smelled it before. She knew she had smelled it before. She surfaced from sleep trying to locate the memory, moving through the inventory of her botanical experience the way she moved through her work files, by association rather than by search.
And then she opened her eyes and saw the flowers on her desk and remembered where she had smelled it: in her father's study, in the small specimen case he kept locked, in the single jar that he had shown her once and then never shown her again, saying only: *this is from a place I hope you'll see one day.*
*Lunaria noctiflora.*
Moonwort of the night-flowering variety, extinct in cultivation according to every botanical record she had consulted in the three years since her father's death, its last verified wild population destroyed in a land reclamation project twenty years ago. Her father had spent the better part of a decade attempting to propagate it from the single specimen he possessed, which had survived in his care because he had understood better than anyone what it required.
She was out of bed before she was fully awake, standing at the desk, looking at perhaps a dozen stems bound loosely with a white ribbon, their blossoms fully open in the cold morning air of her room. The blossoms were white, five-petaled, with the particular luminescent quality she had come to recognize as the signature of the light-retention phenomenon — not glowing visibly in this light, but with a depth of whiteness that suggested an interior source.
There was no note. There was no card. There was only the flowers in a plain glass vase, placed on her desk at some point during the night, by someone who had been in her room while she slept and had decided that these flowers were what she needed to find in the morning.
She stood and breathed and let the scent find all its associated memories, which arrived in a specific order: her father's study, the locked specimen case, his voice saying *a place I hope you'll see one day.* The nursery greenhouse, the propagation attempts that had never quite succeeded. The botanical literature, the extinction records, the careful notations in his last working notebook that had trailed off into silence.
And now: here. In a vase. In her room.
She went to find Isolde.
Isolde was in the east corridor doing morning rounds, and she turned when Seraphine appeared with the expression of someone accustomed to early requests who had not been expecting this particular person at this particular hour.
"The flowers in my room," Seraphine said. "Do you know who put them there?"
Isolde's face went through several things in quick succession. Surprise. Concern. A kind of careful assessment. "What flowers, miss?"
"*Lunaria noctiflora.* Night-flowering moonwort. A dozen stems, in a glass vase on my writing desk. They were placed during the night."
Isolde shook her head slowly. "I didn't put them there. And I would know if the other staff had been in your room — we don't go in during sleeping hours unless asked." She paused. "I know the species. It grew in the east wing, before Lord Ardent closed it. I used to see it through the doors sometimes." Another pause, the pause of someone connecting information that had not previously been connected. "Lord Ardent has strictly prohibited cutting flowers from the conservatory for household use. He said — he said the specimens need to remain undisturbed."
"And yet," Seraphine said.
"And yet," Isolde agreed.
She found Cassian in his study at eight o'clock. He was at his desk, writing something — the desk that had always looked to her like the desk of a man who kept careful records of things he was afraid of forgetting — and he looked up when she came in without knocking, which she had started doing approximately three days ago and he had stopped objecting to.
She set a single stem on the desk in front of him.
He looked at it.
The flower was open, its five petals arranged with their mathematical precision, its interior depth of whiteness catching the morning light from the study window and doing something that was neither reflection nor transparency but the third thing that was specific to the light-retention specimens.
Cassian looked at the flower for a long time.
"Where did you find this?" he said.
"In my room," she said. "This morning. In a vase, on my desk, placed during the night. A dozen stems."
The silence that followed was the length of a man attempting to determine whether he was being told something he should have anticipated.
"Isolde didn't put them there," she said. "The staff don't enter rooms during sleeping hours. Lady Maribel has no apparent reason to. Rowan was in the east guest corridor, which I verified this morning." She looked at him. "Which leaves you, or someone I'm not aware of."
"There is a specimen of this variety in the east wing," he said — his voice had taken on the particular flatness of careful information delivery, the voice he used when he was choosing every word before speaking it. "It has been propagating for the past two years, in conditions I've been monitoring. I knew it was approaching flowering stage but I didn't know it had — " He stopped. Looked at the flower. "I didn't know it had reached this stage."
"That's not what I asked," she said. "I asked who put them in my room."
He met her eyes. The study light was direct and honest and left nowhere to hide, and his face in it showed the evidence of a man managing a response that was more complicated than the question on its surface.
"I don't know," he said.
She looked at him for a moment, reading the specific quality of the not-knowing — not evasion, she thought, not the carefully constructed non-answer she had learned to recognize from him in the first days here. Genuine uncertainty. He did not know who had placed them, or he did not know how to explain the mechanism by which they had come to be placed, which were different but equally real forms of not-knowing.
"I believe you," she said.
He exhaled very slightly.
"My father spent ten years trying to propagate this species," she said. "He believed it was extinct everywhere outside this conservatory. He kept the only surviving specimen he knew of in a locked case in his study. He told me — once, only once — that it came from a place he hoped I would see someday." She looked at the flower on his desk. "He meant here."
"Yes," Cassian said.
"He grew it here. These plants, or their ancestors, are his work."
"The original specimens were introduced by the research team twenty years ago. Your father identified the variety and designed the cultivation protocol. When the team disbanded, the specimens were left in place — the east wing was the only location where the conditions were right to sustain them." He paused. "I maintained them after the wing was closed. Because — " He stopped.
"Because they were his," she said.
He said nothing, which was his version of yes.
She went back to her room with the single stem she had brought to his study — he had not asked her to return it — and placed it back with its companions in the vase. The dozen flowers scented the room with the compound note of her father's best work, preserved and propagating in a closed wing of a house that had more layers of meaning than she had yet found the bottom of.
She sat on the edge of her bed and looked at them and let herself feel what she felt, which was complicated and which she would have struggled to name precisely but which had at its center something that was not grief, exactly, though it contained grief. Something more like: *he was here. He worked here. He left things here that are still alive.*
She picked up the flowers' wrapping paper when she moved the vase to better light — the cloth that had been around the stems — and found something beneath it. A small square of paper, the yellowish quality of old writing paper rather than new, with a few words in a hand she didn't recognize:
*He wasn't wrong about you.*
Six words. No signature. The handwriting was careful, deliberate, neither Cassian's controlled script nor Maribel's formal hand nor Isolde's round, quick letters nor Rowan's compressed engineer's shorthand.
She held the paper and looked at it for a long time.
Then she placed it carefully in her father's notebook, between two pages that his hands had touched, and went downstairs to breakfast.
