She was introduced to seventeen people in the first forty-five minutes.
This was the mathematics of a social event where her escort was a man whose name opened rooms — the introductions came to her rather than requiring her to pursue them, which was an advantage she had not anticipated and used carefully. Botanist. Restoration expert. Working with Lord Ardent on the Glass Conservatory. Yes, truly, the original installation. Yes, significant scientific interest. Yes, she believed the work was progressing well.
She managed these conversations with the part of her that had learned, in three years of managing a failing business, to be useful and legible to people whose help she needed. She was warm, she was specific about the work in ways that suggested competence without inviting technical questions, and she listened to everything everyone said with the particular quality of attention that made people feel heard and that had the secondary function of collecting information at a rate they did not notice.
Halewick circulated on the other side of the room. She tracked him with peripheral attention while maintaining full apparent focus on whomever she was speaking with. He was doing the same thing to her, she was fairly certain — the mirror dynamic of two people who knew each other's general situation without yet having spoken.
Cassian stayed close but not adjacent — the correct social distance for a professional companion rather than a personal one, near enough to be available, far enough to give her room to operate. Lady Maribel had been absorbed immediately into a conversation with several women of a similar generation and was doing whatever Lady Maribel did at events like these, which Seraphine suspected was less about enjoyment and more about intelligence gathering.
The music had been playing throughout — a small ensemble in the corner, working through the standard programme of the season. When it shifted into the tempo of a waltz, the quality of the room changed slightly: some people moved toward the floor, others toward the edges, and the social geometry of the event rearranged itself around the expectation of dancing.
Cassian materialized beside her.
He did not speak. He turned toward her with the air of a man performing a social obligation that he had calculated was necessary and had prepared for with the same efficiency he brought to everything, and he extended his hand.
She looked at his hand for approximately the length of a breath.
Then she placed hers in it and they walked onto the floor.
The first thing she registered was that he danced well. This should not have been surprising — he was the product of exactly the kind of upbringing where such things were taught as systematically as reading — but there was a difference between dancing correctly and dancing with the particular quality of someone who understood movement as communication, who led with enough clarity that following required no effort and enough subtlety that she was not merely being directed but was making actual choices within the structure. She matched him immediately, which required no thought, and this absence of thought was itself the surprise: that they moved together as though they had done it before.
They were in the middle of the floor. The music was a slow waltz, something she didn't know the name of, something in a minor key that had more feeling in it than was strictly necessary for a social waltz but which she found she was grateful for.
His hand was on her back. His other hand held hers at the correct height and with the correct lightness — not gripping, not loose, but present in the specific way of something that intended to remain. She was aware of these points of contact with a clarity that she was managing carefully, filing away rather than responding to, because this was not the time or the place for responses and she was a person who understood the importance of timing.
"Halewick has been watching you since we arrived," he said. His voice was very quiet, meant only for her — the particular pitch of something said within the circumference of a waltz, where proximity justified confidentiality.
"I know."
"He'll approach you before the evening ends."
"I know that too." She kept her eyes at the correct angle — not looking at him directly, as one did not in a waltz, but near enough to be aware of his expression in her peripheral vision. "What will you do?"
"Stay within range. Not within hearing." A pause. "You can manage him."
"I know I can." A pause of her own. "I want to understand what he wants. Not just what he's done."
"What he wants is simple," Cassian said. "He wants to complete the research. He always has. Everything else is incidental to that."
"Even the people?"
"Especially the people." The words were flat, without bitterness — not because the bitterness wasn't there but because it had been there long enough to have changed composition.
They turned through the corner of the floor. She was aware that they were being watched — not maliciously, but with the social interest of people noting configurations and drawing conclusions. Cassian Ardent dancing with the woman who had come to work on the conservatory. Three years after the tragedy. Conclusions were being drawn. She was aware of this and was also aware that she did not, at this particular moment, care very much about the conclusions.
"Be careful with him," Cassian said.
"You keep saying that."
"You keep giving me reason to."
She turned her head just enough to look at him directly — a deviation from the form of the dance that was slight enough to be deniable — and found that he was already looking at her, which was also a deviation, and that his expression in this moment had less management in it than almost any expression she had seen from him.
She looked away first. Technically this was the correct social form. She did not examine whether it was also the correct personal form.
"I won't tell him about the manuscript," she said. "Or the box. Or the half-page."
"I know."
"I will let him tell me what he thinks he knows about my father. I'll let him think that's more than I know."
"That's good."
"It might not be comfortable."
"No." A pause. "Some things that are necessary aren't comfortable."
She thought about this. About the things that were necessary and not comfortable that she had been accumulating at Luminara Hall — the questions she had asked and the answers that had arrived in pieces, the rooms she had entered without permission, the knowledge she was building about her father's last years that was beautiful and terrible in equal measure.
The waltz was approaching its end. She could feel it in the structure of the music — the harmonic movement toward resolution, the particular quality of the last phrases before a cadence.
His hand was still on her back. Her hand was still in his. Neither of these things was remarkable — it was a waltz, these were the mechanics of a waltz — but she was aware of them in the way she was aware of things that were about to change, things at the end of their duration.
The music resolved. They stopped. They separated with the correct social grace of two people who had danced together as a professional and social exercise and were now completing that exercise.
She turned to find Rowan — no, Rowan was not here. She was alone in the social sense, which was an unusual feeling and one she noted. Cassian was behind her, and she felt rather than saw the moment his hand released her — felt it because of the slight change in the air at her back, the absence of the warmth that had been there.
She thought it lasted half a beat longer than the mechanics required.
She did not look back to verify.
Fifteen minutes later, Halewick appeared at her elbow with a glass of wine she hadn't asked for and a smile she recognized immediately as the kind that had been prepared in advance.
"Miss Vale," he said, with the warmth of someone who meant it. "I've been hoping to speak with you all evening."
She turned to face him with the full attention she brought to problems that required solving, and smiled back.
"Dr. Halewick," she said. "I've heard a great deal about your work."
This was true. All of it was information she intended to use.
