She went back to the basement alone the next morning.
Not to take anything, not to disturb the documentation Rowan had completed, not for any practical purpose that she could have defended to someone who asked. She went because there was something she needed to do that she had not been able to do the previous afternoon, with Rowan and Cassian present, with the practical work of documentation occupying the space.
She needed to look.
She descended with a single lamp and stood at the entrance to the racks for a moment, letting her eyes adjust to the baseline light of the space — the ambient glow of hundreds of panels doing their slow continuous work. Then she moved to the section she had identified the previous afternoon, the section where the identifier codes matched her father's notation.
His panels were in the third rack from the east wall, second row from the top. She counted them: eleven panels, representing eleven sustained work sessions, eleven periods of extended presence in the conservatory over his three years of involvement. Eleven contributions to the record he had also built the mechanism to erase.
She set her lamp on the floor and looked at the panels.
They had the same quality as all the panels in this basement — the depth of the treated glass, the ambient glow of accumulated photonic trace. She looked at them without touching, the way she had learned to look at things first, before contact, before the information of touch altered the information of observation.
They looked like glass. Beautiful, treated, carefully made glass that had spent thirty years in a space absorbing and storing and being patient.
She reached out and placed her palm against the nearest one.
The warmth came immediately.
It was different from anything she had felt before through the panels. Not different in a supernatural sense — she did not believe in supernatural things, had spent a month learning to understand the system's actual mechanism — but different in the specific way that the familiar was different from the general. This was not the anonymous presence of researchers she had never met. This was not the quality of Lady Oriane's held grief, beautiful and particular but belonging to a person she had known only through portrait and testimony.
This was her father's attention.
She recognized it the way she recognized his handwriting, the way she recognized the smell of his study, the way she recognized the specific patience that he had taught her and that she carried in her own work without always knowing where it came from. The quality of attention that moved through her palm was the quality she had been apprenticed to — careful, thorough, genuinely interested, the attention of a man for whom a thing worth looking at was a thing worth looking at completely.
And beneath that quality — because she was who she was, because she had his biological compatibility and had spent a month learning to receive what the system offered, because she was standing in a basement that held thirty years of accumulated presence and was the person he had left everything for — she felt something else.
Love.
Not performed love, not recorded love, not the love of letters or photographs or testimony. The love that was present in how he had paid attention — the specific warmth of someone who had been in this space doing this work because he believed it was worth doing, who had done it with the full investment of himself, who had been here and had cared.
She stood with both hands on the panel and let herself receive it, the way she had been learning to let herself receive things from this system all month. Not analyzing, not managing, not turning the experience into data. Just receiving it, in the way the system had been designed to offer it — not as extraction, not as transfer, but as presence. As the trace of someone who had been here and had left a record of that.
Her father's face appeared in the glass.
She knew it was not her father. She understood with complete clarity that it was her own reflection, slightly modified by the photonic properties of the treated glass, filtered through the specific trace it contained — her face, which looked like his face, showing her the record of his attention by showing it through the medium that carried it. It was optics and chemistry and thirty years of accumulated light.
It was also his face.
She had not cried in the garden when she read the document. She had not cried in the conservatory when she found the schematic. She had been holding the fullness of all of it — the grief of revision, the grief of loss, the grief of finding what her father had left for her in every room and drawer and root system of this house — and it had been accumulating without being released because she was who she was and she did not cry easily and she had been busy.
She cried now.
Not loudly. Not in a way that would have been audible outside the basement. The specific tears of someone who had been carrying something very heavy and had finally been given a place to set it down — not because the weight was gone, but because the weight was finally acknowledged, by the only witness that could have mattered here, which was the record he had left in glass.
She let herself cry for as long as it took.
Then she stood in the quiet basement and breathed and looked at the glass panel, which was now just a glass panel again — her reflection in old glass, her ordinary face, the face that looked like his face and always would.
"I found the schematic," she said. She said it quietly, not to the basement in general but to the panel, to the record of his attention. "I know what to do."
The panel did not respond. Of course it did not respond — it was glass, and the warmth had passed, and whatever she had received from it was hers now to carry rather than something that lived in the glass.
But she felt, in the specific way of feeling that she trusted because it was the same way she trusted her hands in soil — not as certainty, not as mysticism, but as the reading of something real that was not visible — that he would have been glad she had found it.
She picked up her lamp and went back up to the conservatory.
The morning was fully light, the conservatory doing its daily work of being a space that held living things in glass, that gathered and diffused and sustained. Rowan was at the secondary gear housing, making final adjustments. The hybrid specimen was more fully open than yesterday, another day closer to its full expression.
She stood in the conservatory for a moment before going to find Cassian.
She thought about the panel. About the warmth. About the face she had seen that was her face and his face both.
She thought about the mechanism she was going to activate in ten days, the mechanism that would discharge all of that — his panels and Lady Oriane's and Maribel's and all of them — and she thought about whether she was ready for that.
She thought: *he built the mechanism. He decided this was worth discharging. He trusted me to carry out the decision he had already made.*
She was ready.
She went to find Cassian and tell him what she had found in the basement, the morning quiet around her and her father's attention still warm in her palms, fading as it always faded, as it was always going to fade, as all things eventually let go of what they had been holding.
