On the third morning, Seraphine came down to find the dining room empty and the kitchen door open and the sound of someone moving with practiced efficiency in the rooms beyond.
She had slept poorly — the music had come again at midnight, eleven minutes and some seconds, gone before she could fully wake — and she was in the state of cautious alertness that follows insufficient sleep: everything slightly too present, the edges of the world a fraction sharper than usual. She had learned, over three years of early mornings and financial worries, to function well in this state. It was not pleasant, but it was familiar.
She helped herself to tea from the kitchen sideboard — there was no one to object, and waiting for service in an empty dining room felt unnecessarily formal given the hour — and sat at the long worktable in the kitchen with her father's notebook and her botanical survey notes and began organizing the day's work plan.
She was three pages into her notes when the kitchen door opened and a young woman came in carrying a tray that was rather too large for her, balanced with the concentration of someone who had learned the hard way that tray management required full attention. She did not see Seraphine until she was halfway to the sideboard, and when she did see her she startled sharply enough that the cups on the tray rattled.
"Oh —" She recovered with the speed of someone trained out of visible reactions. "Miss Vale. I apologize, I didn't — " The tray tilted.
Seraphine was already on her feet, and they reached the tray at the same moment — Seraphine from one side, the maid from the other — and between them steadied it before anything fell.
For a moment they stood on either side of the tray in the early morning kitchen light, both slightly breathless.
"Thank you," the maid said, with the precision of someone who had been thanked so rarely that they treated the word with great care when they used it.
"I should have announced myself," Seraphine said. She took one side of the tray and helped carry it to the sideboard. "I startled you."
The maid looked at her with an expression that Seraphine recognized as recalibration — the process of revising an expectation that had not matched reality. She was perhaps twenty-three, with dark copper hair that had been pinned with ambition and was now achieving independence from its pins in several places, and eyes the color of good amber. Her livery was neat but her hands were ink-stained, which Seraphine noted with approval.
"Isolde Wren, miss," the maid said. "I attend to the household rooms. I'm sorry I didn't bring your breakfast tray — I was told you preferred to come down."
"I do." Seraphine sat back down at the worktable. "Will you sit? You look like you've been carrying things since before it was light."
Isolde looked briefly at the door, calculating. Then she sat, with the careful posture of someone sitting where they were not entirely sure they should be. "Only since five," she said. "Lord Ardent keeps early hours."
"So do I." Seraphine pushed her tea things aside to make room and poured a second cup from the pot without asking. "Is it always this quiet here? I mean the whole house."
"Mostly." Isolde accepted the cup and wrapped both hands around it. "Quieter since — " She stopped. Then, more carefully: "Quieter in recent years."
"Since Miss Marrow."
Isolde looked at her over the rim of the cup. "You know that name?"
"Lady Maribel mentioned it yesterday, or near enough." Seraphine kept her voice neutral. "I haven't been told much about what happened. Only that there was a former fiancée and that she died."
"In the conservatory," Isolde said. "Three years ago. During a storm, in November." She set the cup down. "No one talks about it properly. They talk around it, or they talk about Lord Ardent's reputation, but no one talks about what actually — " She stopped again.
"What actually happened."
"What the servants know is that she went into the conservatory that night. That Lord Ardent was not with her. That by the time anyone realized she hadn't come back, it was too late." Isolde looked at her hands. "The official story is that she was lost in the storm, that the east wing door jammed, that it was a tragedy. And it was a tragedy. But —"
"But you don't think that's all of it."
Isolde was quiet for a moment. Through the kitchen windows, the light was gathering slowly — the particular dawn of this northern coast, reluctant and grey.
"Miss Evelise — Miss Marrow — she was curious," Isolde said finally. "Like you. She asked questions. She went places she wasn't supposed to go." A pause. "She told me once that she had found something in the conservatory that Lord Halewick — that's Dr. Halewick, the Luminology researcher who used to visit — that she'd found something he was doing that she didn't think was right."
Seraphine kept her face composed, though something in her chest had become very still and attentive. "Dr. Halewick?"
"He hasn't been back since Miss Evelise died. Lord Ardent ended the research collaboration." Isolde looked at the door again, but this time with the expression of someone looking for reassurance rather than escape. "I've said more than I should."
"You haven't said anything I'll repeat without good reason." Seraphine meant this. "You said she was kind to you."
Isolde looked at her with a sudden directness that suggested the question had struck somewhere genuine. "She was the only person in this house who ever asked how I was and waited for the actual answer." A breath. "She brought me a book once — a botanical atlas, she said it was because I liked plants, and I did, I do, but I think really she could tell I was lonely and didn't know how else to say it." A long pause. "I kept the book."
Seraphine thought about a woman who gave botanical atlases to lonely maids and then went into a conservatory in a storm and did not come out.
She thought about the word *curious* and what it cost, in this house.
She thought about her own curiosity — the tight, persistent thread of it that had been running through everything since she read her father's name in a letter sealed with silver wax — and what she was going to do with it.
"Tell me about the lights," she said. "And the music."
Isolde's expression shifted. "You've heard it."
"Last night. And I saw a light the first night — through my window."
"The blue light." Isolde nodded slowly, as someone confirming something they had debated whether to confirm. "It started about a year after Miss Evelise died. At first it was only sometimes. Now it's — more regular." She wrapped her hands around the cup again. "Some of the staff left because of it. They said it was her ghost. I don't think it's a ghost."
"What do you think it is?"
"I don't know." Honest, unhedged. "But it comes from the east wing, and it follows a pattern, and ghosts don't follow patterns — do they?" She looked at Seraphine with the expression of someone who had thought about this more than they wanted to. "Patterns mean something is making it happen. Patterns mean someone chose it."
Seraphine was quiet for a moment, thinking about the seventeen anomalous specimens and the music that lasted eleven minutes and forty-two seconds.
"Did Miss Marrow ever mention my father?" she said. "Professor Elian Vale."
Isolde thought. "Not by name. She mentioned the previous research team — the botanists who had worked on the conservatory before the current state of things. She said one of them had been very close to something important." A pause. "I didn't know it was your father until just now."
Seraphine opened her notebook to the page with the symbol. "Have you ever seen this?"
Isolde leaned forward, looked at it. Something moved across her face. "On the conservatory beds. On some of the older equipment in the storage rooms." She looked up. "On the lock of the east wing door."
Seraphine wrote in her margin: *Evelise knew something. Halewick. East wing lock. Symbol = access?*
The kitchen was fully light now, the grey morning asserting itself through the windows, and from somewhere in the upper house came the sound of movement that signaled the start of the household's official day. Isolde stood, straightening her apron with the automatic motion of someone returning to their designated role.
"Miss Vale," she said, pausing at the door. "Last night was the second time you heard the music."
"Yes."
"If you hear it again tonight" — Isolde looked at her with the careful expression of someone delivering a message that cost them something — "don't follow it."
She was gone before Seraphine could ask the question that had arrived immediately: *again?* Meaning it had been followed before. Meaning someone had heard it and had gone toward it and — what? Come back changed? Not come back at all?
Seraphine sat in the empty kitchen for a long moment after Isolde left.
Then she turned to a fresh page in her notebook and wrote at the top: *Evelise Marrow — not a villain. A witness.*
Beneath it: *What did she see?*
Beneath that: *What did she know about Halewick that she couldn't prove?*
Beneath that, the question that was becoming the center of everything: *What did my father know?*
The morning opened around her, grey and cold and full of unanswered things, and Seraphine Vale, who had come to Luminara Hall for money and had stayed for a symbol on a piece of paper, picked up her botanical notes and her father's notebook and went to do the work she had been contracted to do — because the work was real and it needed doing, and because doing it was the only way she was going to find what she had actually come here to find.
She was almost at the conservatory door when she looked up and saw Lord Ardent standing in the upper window of the east wing, looking out at the garden.
He was standing very still in the pale morning light, and he was not looking at her — he was looking at the garden below the east wing, at something she could not see from her angle. And on his face, for the two or three seconds before he registered her presence and his expression resumed its habitual restraint, was a look she recognized because she had worn it herself, on the mornings she went to her father's study and stood in the smell of cedar and old paper and tried to remember how to exist in a world that didn't have him in it.
It was grief. Quiet, contained, practiced grief. The grief of someone who had been feeling it so long that it had become indistinguishable from their ordinary expression, except in unguarded moments like this one.
He saw her. His face closed.
She looked away and went inside and spent the rest of the morning with her hands in the soil and her mind working over everything she now knew, which was more than she had arrived with and less than she needed, which was exactly where she had expected to be.
