The term break lasted six days.
Ethan spent them the way he spent most unstructured time: working. He had the Blight history texts, the accumulated clinical notes from the term, and a growing architectural understanding of the problem he had been building since the bird on the windowsill. He also had, for the first time in his two lives, something else to do with the quieter hours — the specific activity of thinking about a person, not analytically, not clinically, but in the warm and undirected way that people thought about people they had recently held hands with in the dark.
He allowed himself this. He had decided, somewhere in the aftermath of the dungeon, that the clinical language standing guard at the edges of everything was a habit he had outgrown, and that allowing himself to simply notice what was there was not the same as losing control of anything.
He thought about Kaelen in the pendant-light quiet, and the green eyes in the dimness, and the *yes* he had said and meant entirely.
He also thought, less clearly but with equal presence, about amber eyes and the weight of an instinct that had fired without asking permission, and about a woman who had come to the library to say a true thing she had decided to stop not saying.
He was, he had written in the notebook, paying attention to what was here. He was continuing to pay attention. The data was rich and the picture was complex and he was, for the first time in a long time, not trying to resolve it into something simpler than it was.
On the fifth day of the break, Kaelen came to find him.
She arrived at the annex in the late morning with the air of someone who had no official reason to be there and had decided not to need one. She sat in her chair. He made tea, because he had acquired the materials for this some weeks ago and had been waiting for an occasion that felt right, and this felt right.
They talked for two hours. Not about treatment, not about the Cult investigation, not about operational matters of any kind. They talked about other things — her early career, the specific quality of the training that had made her into the person she was, the things she had given up and the things she had kept. He talked about what he could — the work, the patients he still carried in memory, the specific satisfaction of a thing done well under difficult conditions.
At one point she said: "I've been thinking about the question I asked you in the dungeon."
"Which part," he said.
"The part where you answered it," she said. "I've been— holding it carefully. I don't want to mishandle it by moving too fast."
"That's reasonable," he said.
"I also don't want to mishandle it by moving too slowly," she said. "By over-managing it into something smaller than it is."
He looked at her. She was looking at the tea in her hands, the controlled surface doing the thing it sometimes did — admitting what was underneath without quite lifting all the way.
"I don't think you're going to do either," he said. "I think you're going to do exactly what you've been doing: pay attention and be honest."
She looked up.
"That's what you've been doing all term," he said. "I've been watching."
She was quiet for a moment. Then, with the directness she used for things she had decided to say: "I want you to know that what I said in the dungeon — the architecture I described, managing around the deadline — I'm revising it. Actively. I don't have the new version yet, but I'm working on it."
"Tell me when you have it," he said.
"I will," she said.
She left at noon. He sat with the empty tea things and the notebook and the specific quality of the break-time campus outside the windows, and he thought: this is what it feels like when something is growing in the right conditions. Slowly. With room. Without being forced.
He wrote: *Kaelen is revising the architecture. I'm revising mine. We are both working on it, in parallel, at our own speeds, and that seems exactly right.*
On the sixth day of the break, Vol 2 began.
---
Freya Drake's delegation had extended for a second week, and then a third, and then — in a filing that the Academy administrative office processed with the specific careful neutrality of people who had decided that some things were above their pay grade — she had taken a formal secondment position with the Academy for the remainder of the academic year, citing the joint training protocol as requiring ongoing oversight.
Ethan read the announcement on the morning of the first day of the new term and understood exactly what it meant and exactly what it didn't mean and what it was going to require from him in terms of navigation going forward.
He filed this with the same equanimity he applied to most significant things.
The new term opened with the combined Vanguard-Paladin coordination drill — the one he'd recommended, the one the Headmistress had approved, the one that would run every two weeks for the rest of the year. He arrived at the south training grounds at the scheduled time and found both units already present: the Vanguard cluster in copper-and-black, the Paladin cluster in silver, Freya at the front of one and Kaelen at the front of the other.
He walked to the midpoint.
Both of them looked at him. He looked back at both of them with the equanimity of a man who had spent a career working in complicated situations.
"Morning," he said.
"Morning," said Kaelen.
"Morning," said Freya.
The synchrony of it was something only he could fully appreciate.
"Let's begin," he said.
The drill was better than the first one — not dramatically better, but measurably, the specific improvement that came from having done something once and remembered the failure points. The Vanguard and Paladin units were still operating on different philosophical frameworks, still generating coordination friction, but they were now generating it in a way that both sides were at least aware of, which was the prerequisite for addressing it.
He moved through the combined unit calling directives, and both sides followed them with the grudging efficiency of people who had noticed that the directives worked, and the passive current ran at its working level, and the specific quality of the morning was good.
Afterward, with both units dismissed, he stood in the training ground with Freya and Kaelen in the configuration that was becoming familiar: the three of them, a small shared space, nobody moving away.
"Better," Kaelen said.
"Better," Freya agreed, with the particular quality of two people concurring on a fact while not exactly agreeing with each other.
"The left flank coordination is still generating a gap," Ethan said. "I have recommendations for the next drill."
"Of course you do," Kaelen said, with the dry tone.
"Of course he does," Freya said, with something in her voice that was not quite the dry tone but occupied the same register.
They looked at each other — Kaelen and Freya — with the specific quality of two people who have just made the same joke and are not sure how they feel about that.
"I'll have the notes by tomorrow," Ethan said, which moved them back to operational ground, which was where all three of them were most comfortable.
He wrote up the notes that afternoon. In the margin of the page, he also wrote: *They made the same joke. I noted this. I am not sure what to do with it but I am noting it.*
He went to dinner and thought about left-flank coordination gaps and bloodline curses and Hoard instincts and the specific weight of paying attention to things that were larger and more various than he had expected his borrowed life in Astraria to become.
He was, he thought, not unhappy about any of it.
The term had begun.
---
POV: FREYA
She had told herself she was staying for the joint training protocol.
This was true. The protocol was genuinely worth overseeing — she had reviewed the first term's coordination data and the gaps were real and the recommendations were sound and having a Vanguard presence in the oversight was operationally justified. She could account for every day of the extended secondment in terms of legitimate professional activity.
She was staying for the joint training protocol, and she was also staying because Ethan Solvane was here, and she had decided to stop pretending these were separate facts.
The instinct had fired thirty-one days ago, in the south courtyard, when she had looked across the assembled students and found the one face that was looking back without performing either deference or defiance. She had tracked the exact moment because she tracked exact moments — the Dragon-kin practice of marking the first sighting of something important, the navigational habit of knowing where you were when the map changed.
Thirty-one days. She had been functioning, in the technical sense, under the Hoard instinct for thirty-one days without acting on it, which was a longer sustained exercise in self-governance than she'd previously undertaken in this particular area. She was not certain whether to be proud of this or concerned by it.
The library conversation had been necessary. She had needed to say the thing directly — to name the instinct, to acknowledge what it meant, to put the question of choice on the table where it could be seen. He had handled it with the specific quality of attention he brought to everything: serious, present, not frightened, not making it smaller than it was.
He had read the texts.
She was still thinking about that. He had gone to the library and read the Dragon-kin bonding literature the way he read everything — because understanding was preferable to ignorance, because the phenomenon was real and deserved to be investigated, because that was simply what he did with things that appeared in his vicinity that mattered.
She had spent thirty-one years being looked at as a power to be reckoned with. She had never been looked at as something worth researching.
She was aware that this distinction was affecting her in ways she had not fully mapped.
In the training ground this morning, standing thirty feet from him while he called directives to a combined unit that shouldn't have been able to coordinate and was learning to anyway, she had felt the Hoard instinct running at its steady background frequency and had felt, layered over it, something that was less foundational and more specific: the particular warmth of watching a person you respect do something well.
She had not chosen the instinct. She was, she thought, choosing the warmth.
The question was whether those were the same choice.
After the drill, walking back to the Vanguard quarters, she thought about what Ethan had said: *The key question isn't whether the instinct is real. It is. What comes after — whether both parties choose, whether the connection develops substance — that's what determines what it becomes.*
He had said it neutrally, as information, because he had gotten it from a text and was reporting what he'd found. She thought he also meant it as something else: a door held open. An acknowledgment that he was watching what developed.
She was watching too.
She was, she thought, going to keep watching. And in the watching, she was going to figure out what she would choose if the instinct were not there. Whether she would choose him anyway.
She had a suspicion about the answer.
She had not yet decided whether to trust the suspicion.
She went back to her quarters and wrote in her field log — Vanguard commanders kept field logs, had kept them since training, the habit too deep to abandon — and what she wrote was not about the drill or the protocol or the coordination gaps.
She wrote: *He read the texts.*
She looked at it for a long moment.
She wrote: *I think that's enough.*
She closed the log and went to look at the coordination notes he'd promised to have ready by morning, because that was something she could act on, and acting on things was what she did when the other things were too large to act on yet.
The morning would come. The notes would be there.
So would he.
The second week of the new term brought the Blight report.
It came through the Headmistress's office at the fourth hour on a Tuesday morning, routed simultaneously to Ethan's academic inbox, Kaelen's Commander's brief, and — as a consequence of her new secondment status — Freya's operational desk. Three copies of the same document, arriving within minutes of each other, which meant the Headmistress had decided simultaneously that all three of them needed to see it.
The report was from the mana-infrastructure team that had been investigating the geological seep Ethan had documented in the dungeon. The seep was not geological.
He read this twice before the full weight of it arrived: the crack in the chamber wall showed signs of deliberate fracture — not explosive, not combat, but a specific kind of precision damage consistent with the Cult's known methods of targeted Blight release. Someone had accessed the third level of the Academy's dungeon and created a controlled release point, timed to coincide with the capstone exercises.
He read the report a third time.
Then he picked up his kit and his notebook and walked to the Headmistress's office.
Kaelen and Freya arrived within three minutes of each other, neither of them having been summoned. The Headmistress looked at the three of them and said, with the calm of a woman who had been running an institution long enough to recognize when a situation had developed its own momentum: "I see we're all here."
The meeting lasted two hours. Ethan laid out the pattern he'd been building since the first term — the cluster documentation, the seeding timelines, the dungeon incident as the latest instance, the organizational signature that was consistent across all of them. Kaelen added the Royal Guard intelligence that overlapped. Freya contributed three Vanguard field reports from border operations that she'd filed as anomalous Blight resurgence and that fit the pattern precisely.
By the end of the meeting, the picture was clear: the Cult of Umbra was actively seeding Blight clusters in the area surrounding Aegis Academy, and had now demonstrated the capability and willingness to breach the Academy's own perimeter.
The Headmistress said: "I'm forming a joint response team. Commander Silverwind will lead the security response. Commander Drake will oversee the field operations. Student Solvane—" She paused. "Your analysis has been the most comprehensive assessment of the Cult's activity patterns we have. I'm asking you to continue it, and to make yourself available to both Commanders for consultation."
He said: "Yes."
The meeting ended. The three of them walked out together into the corridor.
"They've been watching the Academy," Kaelen said.
"For longer than we thought," Freya said.
"The dungeon access was preparation," Ethan said. "Testing whether a controlled release was viable before a larger operation. They wanted to see if the purification response would contain it."
Both of them looked at him.
"They know about my mana core," he said. It was not a hypothesis he'd been avoiding — it was a conclusion the evidence required. "The cluster in the eastern margin, the dungeon incident — both situations where my specific capability was the variable being tested. The Cult is gathering data on Sol Aegis purification."
The corridor was quiet.
Kaelen said, carefully: "That makes you a target."
"It makes me a piece of information they're trying to understand," he said. "Whether that translates to a target depends on what they conclude."
Freya said nothing. She was looking at him with the amber eyes and the scales at their still, held quality — the expression he'd learned to read as the one she wore when the Hoard instinct was doing something she was actively not acting on.
"The protection protocol," Kaelen said, more to herself than to him.
"Remains in effect," he said.
"I'm increasing it," she said. "Effective immediately."
"I expected that," he said.
Freya said, still looking at him: "I'll position Vanguard assets along the eastern perimeter. And—" She paused. "I'll be moving my operational base to the south quadrant building. Closer."
He understood what this meant in practical terms and in the other terms that ran underneath it.
"All right," he said.
They stood in the corridor for a moment longer, the three of them, with the morning light coming through the windows at a low winter angle and the new term's weight settling around them, and then Kaelen said she had a security briefing to prepare and Freya said she had perimeter assessments to run, and they dispersed in two directions, and he was left in the corridor with the specific quality of a situation that had just become larger than it had been.
He stood there for a moment.
He thought: the Cult knows about the Sol Aegis core.
He thought: Kaelen and Freya are both moving closer.
He thought: this is the shape of what was building. This is what the data was pointing toward.
He was a rational man. He would figure it out.
He went back to the annex and opened the notebook and began drafting the most comprehensive threat assessment he'd produced since arriving in Astraria, and the morning moved around him, and the term continued, and the layers of what was happening kept accumulating with the patient inevitability of things that had been building for a long time and had finally decided to arrive.
In the south quadrant, a Dragon-kin commander was looking at room assignments and thinking about proximity.
In the administrative wing, a Paladin commander was updating a security protocol and thinking about protection.
In the annex, a Combat Medic was writing threat assessments and thinking, in the margins, about two different kinds of being seen and what it meant to be worth the attention.
He thought: I said I would pay attention.
He thought: I am paying attention.
He thought: here we are.
