The assessment was on a Thursday.
Kaelen Silverwind had been running Aegis Academy's Combat Medic practical evaluations for three years, and in those three years she had developed a routine that worked: arrive early, run the briefing, observe, correct, leave. Clean. Professional. Impersonal, which was the only way to run evaluations without accumulating the kind of investment in outcomes that compromised judgment.
She had been running the impersonal routine for three years without incident.
On Thursday morning, the routine lasted until approximately eight-oh-three, which was when she looked up from her briefing notes and found Ethan Solvane standing in the third row with the expression of a man who had arrived prepared and was waiting, with complete equanimity, to see what happened next.
She had seen that expression before. She had seen it for six seconds on a training ground, in the moment before he touched her wrist and did something that she was still, four days later, not entirely able to account for. She had spent those four days constructing a satisfactory explanation. The most satisfactory one she had managed was: unusual mana interaction, probably involuntary on his part, definitely not to be repeated.
She filed the expression and gave the briefing.
She ran the evaluation.
She did not go near him.
This produced its own problem, because the room was thirty feet by forty feet and there were twelve students in it, and the architecture of a thorough evaluation required moving through the space in a pattern that made avoidance geometrically impossible after a certain point. She lasted forty minutes before she had to approach, and in those forty minutes she observed, without meaning to observe, the following things:
He was calm in a way the other students were not. Not the performative calm of someone suppressing nerves, but the actual calm of a person doing something familiar. His hands moved over the assessment scenarios with a confidence that was not arrogance — it was just knowledge, the specific competence of someone who has done this before in conditions that were not academic.
He was also, she noticed, doing something slightly wrong, in a way that was actually more correct.
She stopped behind him. He didn't flinch. She had noticed that about him before — that he did not perform the small territorial submissive gestures that most people, most men especially, produced automatically in her presence. He simply continued doing what he was doing, which was infuriating, and told her something about where he had come from that she filed for later.
She questioned him about the triage order. He answered her, clearly and without defensiveness, and he was right, and she told him so, because she was a commander and commanders did not refuse to acknowledge correct assessments on the grounds that the person making them was inconvenient.
She moved on.
She moved away, and the thing she could not account for moved with the distance between them, because it appeared to operate on a gradient and ten meters was better than five and fifteen was better than ten, which she had noted with the bleak precision of someone cataloguing their own symptoms.
She knew what it was. The absence of pain.
She had been in pain for six years. Not always acute, not always the burning, blinding crisis that had nearly felled her on the training ground three weeks ago — most of the time it was a background radiation, a constant low-grade cost that she paid for the privilege of being alive and functional, and which she had long since learned to build her operational capacity around the way an engineer builds roads around a mountain. You could not remove the mountain. You planned for it.
For six years, ten minutes after she woke up, without fail, the curse in her mana veins asserted itself. A tightening first, then heat, then the specific burning that meant another section of the conduit was scarring over, capacity narrowing by fractions she was running careful, private monthly assessments to track. It was slow. She had perhaps eight to ten years before it became operationally limiting in ways she could not conceal or compensate for, and she had plans for those ten years, and they did not include anyone knowing about this.
In Training Hall Seven, standing fifteen feet from Ethan Solvane, the background radiation was lower than she had experienced it in six years. Not absent. Lower. A measurable reduction, a specific decrease she could triangulate to the rough radius of his presence, and which she had now replicated on two separate occasions, which meant it was not anomalous, which meant it was a consistent phenomenon, which was a problem.
She needed it to be an anomaly. Anomalies could be dismissed. Consistent phenomena had to be investigated, and investigation required proximity, and proximity was what she was currently attempting to avoid, and the circularity of this was not lost on her.
After the evaluation, she debriefed, dismissed the students, and stood alone in Training Hall Seven for four minutes.
She ran through the options.
Option one: ignore it. The reduction was measurable but not critical; she had managed for six years on a higher baseline. Continuing to manage was not beyond her capacity.
The problem with option one was the memory of the training ground. The memory of six seconds of his hand on her wrist and the sudden, total, devastating absence of something she had not understood she was bracing against until the bracing stopped. She had not, in six years, experienced that. Absence-of-pain was not the same as low-pain. It was a categorically different experience, and she had the deeply inconvenient knowledge that her body had filed it under *this is what you have been missing* in a way that made option one significantly harder to execute.
Option two: address it directly. Report the unusual mana phenomenon to the Academy's research division, have it investigated properly, treat it as the medical anomaly it was rather than the personal complication it felt like.
The problem with option two was that it would require disclosing the curse. No report on anomalous mana interactions in her vicinity would get far without someone asking why she could detect the effect so precisely, which meant explaining that she was running monthly assessments of her own mana vein degradation, which meant explaining the degradation, which meant the thing she had been protecting for six years was no longer protected.
Option three, she did not write down, because it was not an option, but it appeared in her mind anyway with the specific precision of things that were not options: find a reason to be in his vicinity and see whether controlled proximity produced a controllable and sustainable reduction in the baseline, and manage this the way she managed everything else, which was carefully and alone and without letting anyone know what was happening.
She walked back to her office in the administrative wing, past the mana-gardens and the afternoon light and the stream of students who parted for her the way water parts for a stone, and she thought about the specific category of problem that arrived wearing the face of a solution.
She thought about the way he had looked up from the assessment, meeting her eyes with the unhurried steadiness of someone who was not afraid of her and not performing the absence of fear, and the specific quality of his attention — clinical, precise, and underneath the precision something she was not going to think about right now.
She sat down at her desk and picked up the next file in the stack.
She thought: I will monitor the situation.
She thought: I will not act on anything until I have more data.
She thought: he is a student at this institution, in a division I supervise, and that means there are clear and appropriate professional parameters, and I will remain within them.
She thought: the next practical session is on Tuesday.
She opened the file.
She did not think about Tuesday. She thought about the file, methodically, for the rest of the afternoon, and she thought about nothing else, and she was very convincing.
At the end of the afternoon, the curse tightened slightly, as it did at the end of most afternoons, the daily toll added to the running total. She set her jaw and worked through it, the way she always did, the way she had been doing for six years.
It took longer than usual. That was new.
She noted it and went home, and did not look toward the east quadrant of the campus, and did not think about the fact that the tightening had started approximately forty-five minutes after she left Training Hall Seven, which was, if she was going to be precise about it, consistent with a twenty-minute half-life on the relief effect from indirect proximity exposure at fifteen to twenty feet.
She was not going to be precise about it.
She was going to go home and sleep and not think about Ethan Solvane, and in the morning she would run the dawn training exercise for the second-year Paladins, and it would be a normal day, and she would not check whether the Combat Medic division's weekly schedule put him on the south training grounds on Tuesday morning.
She checked on the way out.
He was on the south training grounds on Tuesday morning.
She walked home in the early evening light, and the pain was already building again, patient and inevitable, and she thought with the cold clarity of a woman who had been managing impossible things for a very long time: this is not a sustainable situation.
She thought: something is going to have to change.
She did not yet know what.
Tuesday arrived with the particular efficiency of days that have been anticipated too precisely.
Kaelen ran the dawn training for the second-year Paladins, which was routine and required her full attention, and she gave it her full attention, and when the session ended and she had forty minutes before she needed to be on the south grounds, she spent them reviewing the week's operational reports and not thinking about anything else.
She arrived at the south training grounds at five minutes to the hour.
He was already there.
She had, apparently, not fully mapped what it would do to the morning to arrive and find him already present: standing at the equipment wall with the easy patience of someone who had been here before, his medic robes exchanged for the lighter training gear of the Combat division, the early light doing something to the clean angles of his face that she filed immediately and refused to examine.
He looked up when she arrived. He did not do the thing where people pretended not to have noticed her until they were sure it was appropriate to respond. He just looked up, noted her presence, and said: "Commander," in the tone he used for her specifically, which she had already identified as meaningfully different from the tone he used for anyone else and was not going to think about.
"Solvane," she said. "Stand by."
The session was a practical field exercise: twelve students in three teams, simulated Blight-exposure scenario, Combat Medics running triage while Paladin trainees managed the source. Kaelen was observing, not participating, and she stationed herself where she could see everything and maintain a reasonable perimeter distance from all the students including him.
The exercise proceeded.
She watched him work, and she watched him work, and she did not think about the radius or the gradient or the specific quality of her mana veins at twenty feet versus at thirty, and she was very focused on the overall coordination of the exercise except that she kept clocking his position with the involuntary precision of a compass finding north, which she noted as data and chose not to act on.
Forty-three minutes into the exercise, the curse spiked.
She had been tracking the cycle, and this was early — earlier than the afternoon had been, earlier than the standard pattern she had mapped over six years. She had a hypothesis about why that was. She did not like the hypothesis.
The spike hit harder than the baseline, the way they did sometimes when she had exerted too much mana in the preceding hours. She had run the dawn training and then the field exercise, and her reserves were lower than they should have been, and the curse filled the gaps with the patient opportunism of something that had learned exactly where her defenses thinned.
She controlled her face. She controlled her breathing. She kept her eyes on the exercise.
She was aware, with the helpless precision of someone whose proprioception had been compromised, that she had been standing for the last eight minutes at a consistent twenty-two feet from his current position, and that twenty-two feet was less effective than fifteen, and that she could — if she chose — cross the intervening distance under the cover of an observation correction without it being remarkable.
She stayed where she was.
The burning moved up from her wrist to her elbow and she breathed through it, steadily, the long-practiced management, and she thought: this is fine, I have managed worse than this, I will continue to manage, this is what management looks like.
The burning reached her shoulder.
That was new. In a bad way.
She had two choices: walk off the training ground and deal with it in private, which would require leaving the exercise unsupervised, which was not something she was willing to do; or acknowledge that she had made an error in not managing her mana expenditure more conservatively this morning and deal with it here, which required controlling the external presentation while the internal situation resolved itself, which she had done before and could do again.
She was on the third option — tight-jawed, very still, breathing in the shallow controlled way that did not communicate what it cost — when the exercise ended and the students gathered for debrief, and Ethan Solvane walked across the training ground toward her with the specific expression she was beginning to recognize as his clinical face.
"Commander," he said, quietly enough that the students gathering behind him wouldn't catch it. "Your left hand has been fisted for approximately four minutes. Pain referral pattern suggests the shoulder rather than the hand itself."
She looked at him.
He looked at her, with the steady, unhurried attention of a man who was not doing this to make a point but simply because he had observed something and the observation had consequences.
"That is not your concern," she said, at the same volume.
"In a field context, a commander who is incapacitated is a tactical problem for everyone in her unit," he said. "With respect."
A long pause.
"I am not incapacitated," she said.
"No," he agreed. "You're managing well. You've been managing well for what looks like a long time." A beat. "That doesn't mean you have to keep doing it alone."
Something tightened in her chest that was not the curse. She identified it as the specific feeling of someone saying a true thing she had not given anyone permission to say.
"The debrief," she said.
"Of course." He stepped back. He gave the debrief; she contributed the parts she was supposed to contribute; she held herself together with the same competence she had always used and it worked, the way it always worked, and afterwards the students dispersed and she was standing on the south training ground in the middle of the morning with the curse burning at her shoulder and Ethan Solvane three feet away, watching her with that infuriating calm.
She could send him away. She had the rank and the right and the training to do exactly that.
She looked at him for a long moment, and she thought about eight years, and about the monthly assessments and their careful trajectory, and about the total devastating absence of something on the training ground three weeks ago.
"If I allow an assessment," she said, very precisely, "it is a medical evaluation. Nothing more."
"Understood," he said. No victory in it. Just the calm, and the kit he had apparently been carrying all morning, and the specific unhurried competence of a man who had done this before under conditions she would probably rather not know about.
She held out her wrist.
He took it.
The current came — different from the training ground, more deliberate this time, a specific thread of something warm and clean moving into the burning channels with the precision of irrigation rather than flood. The pain did not vanish the way it had last time. It pulled back, slowly, like a tide retreating from a shore it had been claiming. It left her mana veins feeling, for the first time in six years, something other than compromised.
She was very still. She was aware of his fingers, warm and steady on her pulse, and of the quality of his attention — focused entirely on what he was doing, which was the only reason she was permitting this, because there was nothing in it except medicine, which was what she had told herself, which she was continuing to tell herself, with decreasing conviction, as the tide retreated further and her shoulder stopped burning and her breath came easier than it had since she woke up.
"The scarring in the channels," he said quietly, eyes half-closed with concentration. "It's miasma-based, not physical. The curse lays down a deposit each cycle. If the deposits can be cleared—"
"My healers have tried," she said. Flatly. Not unkindly.
"They tried flow-work," he said. "Pushing mana through." A pause. "What I'm doing is different." Another pause. "I want to do more tests before I promise you anything. But — Kaelen."
He had not used her name before. She registered this with a clarity that she was not prepared for.
"I think I can help."
She looked at him, this man who was not afraid of her and not performing the absence of fear, and the current was still moving between them, warm and specific and unlike anything her healers had managed in six years of trying, and she thought: this is dangerous.
She thought: I know.
She said: "Tuesday, then. After the dawn session. You can run more tests."
He nodded. Professional. Clinical. He released her wrist.
She held the absence of his hand for a moment, and then she put it away, the way she put away everything, and she walked off the training ground without looking back.
She did not allow herself to look forward to Tuesday until she was at a minimum of one building's width away.
Then, for approximately thirty seconds, she allowed it.
