The word arrived in the fourteenth week.
He was in the south library in the afternoon, reviewing the next month's session parameters, when Morgana came in and sat across from him.
He looked up.
She set the notebook on the table between them. Her personal notebook — the one she had been writing in since Verath, the one she had told him about in increments over the months. She set it flat on the table and held the cover with both hands.
He waited.
"I found the word," she said.
He was very still.
"I told you," she said, "when I had it, I'd tell you." She looked at the notebook cover. "I've been — going around it. The notebook has been going around it. The credit column has been building and the thing it was crediting has been building and I kept finding ways to describe it without the direct word."
He held the table's edge.
"Yesterday," she said, "I was in the courtyard. The vine in the east wing courtyard. And I was looking at the root system and I thought — the same thought I've thought many times now, about the deep channel systems and the non-obvious sources and the specific strength of things that don't need the obvious resource."
She looked at him.
"And I thought: that's what this is. What I have, with you. It's mine. I built it. Not from what was obvious. From what I found by looking in the right places." She paused. "And the word for what you feel when you have built something like that is—" She stopped. "Is love. That's the word."
The south library was very quiet.
He held the word.
She said: "I've been afraid of it. For a long time. Because it was the word Caelar used, or the version of it he used. And I needed to know that what I had was different from that — that it came from a different source, was built on different ground, was mine in a way his was never mine."
"Is it?" he said.
"Yes," she said. "I checked. I went through the notebook, all of it — every entry from Verath forward, every piece of credit in the column — and the pattern is: I chose every step. There was no management. No strategy. No condition attached to the wanting." She held his gaze. "It's mine."
He said: "I know."
She looked at him.
"You knew," she said.
"I knew," he said. "I've known for a while." He met her gaze steadily. "I was waiting for you to find the word."
"You said you'd be here when I found it," she said.
"Yes," he said. "I am."
She held the notebook with both hands. He watched her hold it — the specific quality of someone who has been carrying something for a long time and is deciding how to set it down.
"I love you," she said. Not declarative. Not dramatic. The specific flat directness she used for things that were simply true, the same register she used for *I kept watching to see if it was real* and *no conditions, so far* and *it keeps being true.*
"I love you," he said. "In the way that's been building since the walkway corridor. In the way that belongs to me." He held her gaze. "The one that developed because I watched you find every non-obvious channel and chose to be present in each of them. That one."
She was very still.
He thought: this is the thing that took the longest to arrive. Not because the feeling was slow to develop but because the word required the confidence that the feeling was really hers, built on real ground, not the replica of something that had been taken from her once.
He thought: she checked every entry in the notebook before she said it. That's — that's the most thorough accounting of love I've ever encountered.
He did not say this. He held it, in the careful place where he kept the things he had received from her that were too significant for immediate deployment.
She looked at the notebook on the table.
"Can I tell you something about this?" she said. "The notebook."
"Yes," he said.
"When I first started writing in it again, after Verath, it was still the accounting framework," she said. "Tracking the variables. Monitoring the pattern. Testing whether the thing was real." She paused. "And then — gradually — it became something else. Not accounting. Recording." She held the cover. "The difference is: accounting is for measuring whether something is worth having. Recording is for keeping what you already know is worth having."
He thought about his own notebooks — the months of careful observations, the clinical shorthand, the specific evolution from *significant variable pending investigation* to something that didn't need a category at all.
"I know the difference," he said.
"I know you do," she said.
They were quiet for a moment.
Then she said: "Ethan."
"Nightshade," he said.
"Morgana," she said.
He looked at her. She almost — the specific almost-smile, the fraction of change that was hers.
"I'm not Nightshade here," she said. "Nightshade is the operational identity. The one that kept me alive in the rooms I needed to survive." A pause. "Here — in this building, with these people — I'm Morgana." She met his gaze. "You've been calling me by the right name for months without knowing it was the right one."
He held this.
"Morgana," he said.
"Yes," she said. "That one."
He said: "I'm glad you found the word."
"I know," she said.
"And I'm glad you checked the notebook first," he said.
She looked at him.
"You knew I did that," she said.
"I knew you would," he said. "Because that's who you are. You don't accept things until you've verified them. That's not a limitation. It's how you know the things you know are real."
She held this.
"It took a long time," she said.
"The things worth having usually do," he said.
She picked up the notebook from the table. She held it for a moment.
"I'm going to keep writing in it," she said. "The credit column."
"Good," he said.
"I wanted you to know what column the things with you go in," she said.
He looked at her.
"I know," he said.
She stood.
At the library door she stopped.
"The vine in the east courtyard," she said. "The bifurcation is lower than the one at the Academy. It goes deeper."
"Is that good or bad?" he said.
"Better," she said. "The deeper the channel, the more stable the source."
He held this.
"Good," he said.
She left.
He sat in the south library in the afternoon light and thought about channels and sources and the specific quality of things that were built slowly and therefore built to last. He thought about the notebook in her hands and the word she had taken fourteen weeks to find and the accounting she had done before she said it.
He thought about the vine going deeper.
He thought: yes. That's exactly right. The deeper the channel, the more stable the source.
He thought: I have a very deep channel here.
He opened his notebook.
He wrote: *She found the word. She said: love. She verified every entry in the notebook first. Then she said it.*
He paused.
He wrote: *She said: Morgana. Not Nightshade.*
He paused again.
He wrote: *The vine in the east courtyard goes deeper than the one at the Academy. Better, she said.*
He looked at the page.
He wrote, slowly: *I have been in the right place for a long time. I think I will be in it for a long time more.*
He closed the notebook.
He went to find all four of them.
He found them, as he usually found them at this hour, distributed across the Cathedral's common spaces — Kaelen in the west corridor with the tactical maps, Freya in the courtyard doing the evening perimeter assessment she had established as her daily routine, Seraphina in the Church network room watching the live mana flow data, Morgana in the east courtyard, which he had expected.
He went to each of them.
He did not say anything significant to any of them. He did not need to. He sat with Kaelen while she reviewed the maps and the comfortable quiet they had been building for a year. He walked the last portion of the perimeter with Freya in the winter evening. He looked at the mana flow data with Seraphina, the two of them reading the same pattern from the same display.
And he went to the east courtyard and stood beside Morgana and looked at the vine.
She pointed to the bifurcation, lower than the Academy's vine, deeper in the root structure.
"There," she said.
"There," he agreed.
They stood in the winter courtyard in the late afternoon, and the vine kept drawing from the source that wasn't supposed to be there, and the Cathedral was doing its patient work around them, and the restoration was continuing in the array chamber above, and everything was going in the right direction.
He thought: this is the life I have.
He thought: I chose it.
He thought: I would choose it again.
He stood in the courtyard until the light was almost gone, and then they went inside together, and the evening was warm, and the work would continue tomorrow, and the deep channels kept doing what they did, stable and patient and there.
He told the others the same evening.
Not because it was his to tell — but because Morgana had found the word and he had received it and it changed something about the shape of what they had built together, and the shape change was something the others needed to know about. He had asked her first, in the courtyard, and she had said: "Yes. Tell them."
He found Kaelen in the west corridor and said, simply: "She found the word."
Kaelen held his gaze for a moment. Then she said: "Good." And there was something in the word that was not just acknowledgment — a warmth that was specifically for him, for this, for the fact that something he had been patient about had arrived.
"Good," she said again, and went back to the tactical maps, and he understood that she was giving him the space to hold it rather than filling it with conversation.
He found Freya coming in from the perimeter and told her the same way. She looked at him with the amber eyes.
"How do you feel?" she said.
He thought about the honest answer.
"Settled," he said. "In a way that doesn't require anything more. It's — complete."
She held his gaze. "I know that feeling," she said. "I've been in it for a while."
"I know," he said.
"She took a long time," Freya said.
"She needed to verify every step," he said. "That's how she knows it's real."
Freya was quiet for a moment.
"That's right for her," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
"Are you all right?" she said.
"Yes," he said. "More than."
She held the assessment for a beat. Then she nodded — the decisive Dragon-kin nod, the one that meant: received and believed.
He told Seraphina in the Church network room. She set down the data display and looked at him.
"She said the word," Seraphina said.
"Yes," he said.
She was quiet for a moment.
"I'm glad," she said. Then, more carefully: "I want to tell you something. About Morgana."
He waited.
"We have been — learning to be in the same space," she said. "Over the months. The vine. The plant. The library. The calibration work." She paused. "I've been watching her work. The way she approaches things. The deep channel reasoning." She met his gaze. "I think — I'm learning to trust her. Not because I decided to. Because the evidence accumulated."
He held this.
"Yes," he said.
"That's how she trusts things too," Seraphina said. "Pattern over time."
"Yes," he said.
"That means we're learning the same language," Seraphina said. "Without anyone teaching us."
He thought about this. He thought about what it meant that two people with very different wounds and very different ways of relating to the world had been, without any direct intervention from him, finding a shared language through the specific work of being in the same spaces and attending to the same things.
He thought: this is what was building.
He thought: this is the thing that matters more than the restoration timeline or the operational plan. This. The people finding each other.
"Yes," he said. "That's exactly what's happening."
She held his gaze with the almost-smile.
"Tuesday," she said.
"Tuesday," he agreed.
He went back to his room. He sat at the desk. He opened the notebook.
He wrote: *I told the others. Kaelen: good. Freya: are you all right? Yes. Seraphina: we're learning the same language without anyone teaching us.*
He paused.
He wrote: *They each knew what it meant. Each of them received it in the way that was theirs to receive it.*
He paused again.
He wrote: *This is what the year was for. Not the restoration of the Continental Mana Core, though that too. This.*
He paused a long time.
He wrote: *People learning to give without conditions and receive without bracing. People finding the deep channels. People saying the true things directly so that they are said.*
He looked at the page.
He wrote: *I am in the middle of all of it. Not managing. Present.*
He wrote: *I am Ethan. Not the healer first. Ethan first. The healer is something I do. Ethan is what I am.*
He looked at that.
He wrote: *That is the thing that changed.*
He closed the notebook.
He turned off the lamp.
He lay in the Cathedral bed and looked at the ceiling and felt, for the first time in either of his lives, the specific quality of a person who has arrived at the right place and knows it and is not afraid it will be taken away.
He was here.
He was choosing it.
He was Ethan Solvane, in a borrowed life that had stopped being borrowed, in a world that had become his, with four people who had found him and whom he had found, and the work was good and the people were good and the life was more than he had known how to ask for.
He thought: I am glad I came here.
He thought: I am glad I stayed.
He thought: I am going to keep staying.
He fell asleep to the sound of the Cathedral's night rhythms — the distant movement of the guards, the wind at the narrow windows, the specific quality of a large old building settling into its rest — and the sleep was easy and the night was quiet and the morning would come, as it always did, with the clean certainty of something that had been waited for honestly.
He was, he thought, going to be in many more mornings.
He was glad.
He slept.
Vol 3, Part 1 — complete.
In the morning, the personal notebook was on the desk.
Not his — hers. Morgana's. Set there at some point in the night, while he was sleeping, left with the specific economy of gesture of someone who knows how to leave something without making it an event.
He looked at it for a long time before he picked it up.
There was a note inside the cover, in the dense economical hand he had learned to read over months of intelligence documents and margin annotations and careful observations about vine root systems.
It said: *For the record. You're in the credit column. You've been there since the walkway. I wanted you to have the documentation.*
He held the notebook.
He thought about the accounting framework and the credit column and the specific meaning of giving someone the documentation — not the word, not the declaration, not the grand gesture. The actual record. The patient accumulation of evidence. The evidence that mattered most because it was hers, because she had verified every entry, because it was real in the most specific way that things could be real: written down, in her own hand, because it was true.
He set the notebook down carefully.
He opened his own notebook.
He wrote: *She left the documentation.*
He paused.
He wrote: *The credit column. Since the walkway.*
He looked at the page.
He wrote: *I have the documentation.*
He closed his notebook.
He went to the east courtyard.
She was there, looking at the vine. The morning light was doing the specific thing it did at this hour — the flat winter quality, the frost retreating from the stone at the edges. The vine was on the south wall, the bifurcation deep, the root system drawing from the channel that wasn't supposed to be there.
"The documentation," he said.
"Yes," she said, not turning.
"Thank you," he said.
She was quiet for a moment. Then she turned and looked at him with the violet eyes in the winter morning light, and the in-between expression that was hers — and in it, he could see, the credit column. Not performing it. Just — showing him it was there.
"You're welcome," she said.
He stood beside her and looked at the vine.
They were quiet for a long time.
He thought: this is where the year has been going. This specific morning, this specific courtyard, this specific vine, this specific person who built something she could trust because she verified every step.
He thought: I would not have planned it this way.
He thought: I would not plan it differently.
"Tuesday," he said.
She looked at him.
"We're not at the Academy," she said.
"No," he said. "But the word doesn't mean the Academy. It means: this continues. Because we both intend it to."
She held this.
"All right," she said. "Tuesday."
They stood in the winter morning, and the vine kept drawing from the deep channel, and the Cathedral was beginning its day around them, and Vol 3 was beginning, and everything that had been building was going to keep building, one careful step at a time, in the direction of the thing they were all working toward.
He was patient.
He had been learning patience for a year.
He thought he was, finally, good at it.
He was here.
He was choosing it.
He would keep choosing it.
That, he had come to understand, was all the answer that was ever needed.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The word arrived in the fourteenth week.
He was in the south library in the afternoon, reviewing the next month's session parameters, when Morgana came in and sat across from him.
He looked up.
She set the notebook on the table between them. Her personal notebook — the one she had been writing in since Verath, the one she had told him about in increments over the months. She set it flat on the table and held the cover with both hands.

He said: "I know."
She looked at him.
"You knew," she said.
"I knew," he said. "I've known for a while." He met her gaze steadily. "I was waiting for you to find the word."

She held this.
"It took a long time," she said.

She picked up the notebook from the table. She held it for a moment.
