The quarterly thesis check-in with Professor Henderson was, by this point in Sicheng's PhD, a familiar enough ritual that he had developed a specific set of preparations for it: printed progress report, updated timeline, the two most recent draft chapters marked with tabs at the sections Henderson would ask about. He arrived at Henderson's office at nine o'clock with all three and the particular composure of someone who had learned, over four years, exactly what this meeting required of him.
Henderson's office had the quality of all long-occupied academic spaces: books in arrangements that suggested both organization and accumulation, papers that had achieved their own topography, a small whiteboard on the side wall that Henderson used for working through problems during meetings. Sicheng had sat in the chair across from Henderson's desk enough times that he no longer noticed the office as an environment — it had become simply the context for a particular kind of conversation.
He had prepared well. He had been preparing well for four years, which was one of the things he was genuinely good at: the specific discipline of knowing what a meeting required and supplying it exactly. Progress reports, clear timelines, draft chapters that demonstrated command of the methodology and awareness of the field. Henderson valued precision and clarity. Sicheng provided both. It was, by all measures, a functional relationship.
He had not, he noticed as he sat down, been thinking about *it could be an invitation* this morning. He had been thinking about the chapter four revision and the external examiner discussion and the conference in March. This was, he had decided at some point between Thursday night and Monday morning, the appropriate way to think about Monday mornings. He was maintaining this decision with modest success.
"Chapter four progress," Henderson said, looking at the report. "Dynamic directionality revision — I see you've flagged this as a significant addition."
"The collaboration with the Whitmore lab identified a limitation in the static directionality assumption," Sicheng said. "The revision strengthens the framework's applicability to open systems. It adds approximately two weeks to the chapter four timeline but improves the overall contribution."
Henderson nodded. He was a careful reader and a methodical thinker, and the nod meant he was processing rather than agreeing. Sicheng waited.
"The methodology is sound," Henderson said finally. "The Whitmore collaboration has been useful, then."
"Productive," Sicheng said. "The integration has generated approaches that neither framework would have arrived at independently."
"Good." Henderson set down the report. "I heard it was going well. Dr. Osei mentioned it at the faculty meeting." A pause, the kind that preceded something Henderson had been thinking about saying. "I want to make sure it stays within the right parameters, though. Your thesis timeline is the priority. Don't let the collaboration become a distraction."
The word landed the way certain words landed when they had been heard before in a different context — not loudly, not dramatically, but with a particular density that meant the mind registered it at a different frequency than the surrounding words.
*Distraction.*
"The collaboration is on track," Sicheng said. "I'll have the dynamic directionality revision complete within the two-week estimate. It won't affect the submission timeline."
Henderson appeared satisfied. The meeting continued for another twenty minutes — the final chapter outline, the external examiner discussion, a brief conversation about a conference in March where Sicheng might present preliminary findings. All of it proceeded correctly, and Sicheng said what needed to be said and noted what needed to be noted and held the word *distraction* at a careful distance in the back of his mind where it could be examined later.
Henderson was a good supervisor. He was thorough and rigorous and he had read everything Sicheng had written and made it better. He cared about his students' success in the specific way that academic supervisors cared — as a professional investment, as institutional pride, and also, Sicheng believed, as something genuinely personal. He was not a villain. He was a person with a framework for what success looked like, and in that framework *distraction* was a risk to be managed, and he had named it as such, and he was not wrong.
Sicheng had spent four years being the student who never gave that framework reason to activate. He sat in the chair across from the desk and thought about this.
He thought about it for two minutes, while Henderson looked at the conference paper outline and made a note in the margin. Then he gathered his printed materials and said the right closing things and left the office, and in the corridor outside he stood for a moment with the printed report in his hand and the word *distraction* in his head and the very specific memory of the last time he had heard it.
---
Later turned out to be the corridor outside Henderson's office, which was approximately forty seconds after the meeting ended.
He walked the familiar route back toward the Henderson lab, past the conference room with the glass door that he had been using for the Thursday methodology discussions, and he stopped because through the glass he could see the whiteboard.
The dynamic directionality session had been three days ago. They had filled the whiteboard in the process of working through the new model — her notation in the compressed diagonal she used when thinking fast, his in the vertical strokes he defaulted to on whiteboards, the two styles building on each other through the afternoon until what was there was neither his framework nor hers but something that had emerged from the argument between them.
No one had erased it.
He looked at the whiteboard through the glass door and thought about Henderson's word, and then, without planning to, he thought about a different whiteboard in a different building in a different city, and a different supervisor, and the same word used in the same register — informational, well-intentioned, delivered with the particular care of someone who believed they were looking out for a junior researcher's best interests.
He had been twenty-four. He had been in a different kind of collaboration — not a research collaboration, or not only that. And the supervisor who had used that word had not been wrong, precisely, about the risk of distraction. He had simply been operating with incomplete information about what was actually at risk.
Sicheng had listened. He had said the right things, the professional things, the things that demonstrated he understood the priority structure. He had gone back to his work. And she had been in a different city six weeks later, and he had not done anything to prevent that, because he had decided that the supervisor was not wrong and that the work was the priority and that what he felt was a complication he could manage.
He had managed it. For four years. And here he was — in a different city, with a different supervisor who had just used the same word about a different collaboration that was becoming, incrementally and without his full consent, something he was not sure the word *collaboration* was any longer entirely sufficient to describe.
He looked at the two kinds of handwriting on the whiteboard. He went back to the Henderson lab.
---
The shared document was open on his screen where he had left it. The last entry, timestamped 4:03pm three days ago, was still there at the bottom:
*It's not. But it could be an invitation.*
He had closed the document without replying at eleven o'clock on Thursday night. He had not opened it on Friday. He had spent the weekend doing what he did with things he had not decided about yet: working around them, maintaining functional distance, waiting for the shape of the problem to become clearer.
The shape of the problem had not become clearer. It had become, if anything, more specific.
He looked at the entry. Then he looked up, through the Henderson lab's glass panel, across the hallway, through the Whitmore lab's glass panel. She was at her desk, visible if he adjusted his line of sight by approximately fifteen degrees — which he had apparently been doing, without noting it as a behavior, for some number of weeks. She was working. Laptop open, notebook beside it, the specific quality of attention that meant she was not aware of being observed.
He had been accumulating observations about her for eleven weeks. He had not, until recently, been cataloguing what he was accumulating.
Her handwriting. He knew her handwriting in two modes — the careful print she used for formal notes and the compressed diagonal of her actual thinking, the one that appeared in margins and whiteboards when she was moving faster than her hand wanted to. He had known the compressed diagonal before Edinburgh. It had not changed.
The way she held her pen when she was not writing — capped, horizontal, rotating slightly between two fingers when she was processing something. He had seen this in the library on her second day, which meant he had been paying attention on her second day, which meant the accumulation had started earlier than he had been accounting for.
The angle at which she tilted her head when she was listening to a counterargument she found compelling but had not yet decided to accept. Approximately twelve degrees to the left. He had observed this often enough to have a number.
The way she argued — not to win but to locate the accurate position, which sometimes meant abandoning her own opening stance entirely if the evidence required it. He found this difficult to emulate and had been finding it increasingly admirable for reasons he had been managing not to examine directly.
The way she said *same time* at the end of a Thursday meeting — in English, always, the switch deliberate, the two words carrying more than two words could reasonably be expected to carry at the end of a professional methodology discussion in a glass-windowed conference room in a building full of people who thought of them as research collaborators.
The fact that she had been to the café on Forrest Road twice without mentioning it, which he had not known until he was already holding two coffees and she was already at his desk and neither of them had elected to comment on the information gap.
He had known these things about her before. Some of them he had known before Edinburgh. Some before that — before the conference four years ago, before the overlap that had produced all the subsequent complications. He had filed them in a category he had not named and had not examined and had been managing carefully for a long time.
Henderson had used the word *distraction* with good intentions, for Sicheng's benefit, about a research collaboration that had in fact been strengthening his thesis.
The supervisor four years ago had used the same word with the same good intentions, and Sicheng had listened, and had managed the distraction, and had spent four years in Edinburgh being excellent at his work and not thinking about what he had chosen not to pursue.
He opened the shared document. He looked at *it could be an invitation* for a moment. Then he placed his cursor below it and typed.
*I've been thinking about it.*
He read what he had typed. Three words. Not a yes and not an explanation and not an invitation accepted — but not silence, which had been, for three days, the alternative. He sent it before he could decide whether it was the right thing to send.
---
The reply came in four minutes.
*So have I.*
He read it. He read it again.
Two words. Symmetric in their non-commitment and their non-nothing. The particular register she used when she meant something exactly as much as she said and not one degree more or less — precise, in the way he had told Jamie she was precise and in the way that *precise* had turned out to be both accurate and insufficient.
He sat in the Henderson lab at three in the afternoon with Edinburgh rain on the window and the shared document open on his screen and the word *distraction* still present somewhere at the back of his mind, quieter now but not gone.
He thought about the whiteboard corridor. He thought about the flash of memory — a different whiteboard, a supervisor's careful word, the choice he had made at twenty-four because he had believed the cost of not making it was manageable. He had been correct. He had been managing the cost for four years and he had gotten very good at it the way you got good at things that had become habits.
The question was not whether the management had been successful. The question was whether *so have I* in the shared document at 3pm on a Monday changed the calculation. Not the facts of the situation — those had not changed. His thesis was still his thesis, Henderson was still his supervisor, the collaboration still had professional parameters that defined its appropriate scope. None of those facts had changed.
What had changed was the accumulation. Eleven weeks of it, two kinds of handwriting on a whiteboard, an argument in Mandarin that had not been planned, a personal question asked without deciding to ask it, and a reply in four minutes that said *so have I* in the same careful register as everything she ever said that she meant entirely.
He thought about what it would mean to be the kind of person who treated this as manageable.
He thought about what he had been like at twenty-four, making the same calculation with less information. He had been, at twenty-four, genuinely convinced that the calculation was correct — that the work was the priority, that what he felt was a complication that would resolve itself, that the appropriate response to a supervisor's well-intentioned word was the professional one. He had not been wrong about the calculation. He had simply been calculating the wrong thing.
He worked until nine o'clock. He was in the Henderson lab for six hours after sending those three words, and the longest stretch he went without thinking about *so have I* was approximately forty minutes, which he noted and filed and did not find as reassuring as he had hoped.
---
On his way out, he passed the conference room.
He stopped.
The whiteboard was still there — the dynamic directionality notation, the two styles of handwriting, the record of a three-hour argument that had produced something neither framework had contained before. Through the glass, in the empty conference room, it looked like what it was: working notes from a research meeting, significant to the people who had generated them and unremarkable to anyone else.
He opened the conference room door.
He thought about who else had access to this room. The building's researchers, the administrative staff, anyone passing the glass panel. He thought about two kinds of handwriting on a whiteboard and what they looked like to someone who did not know what they represented — to Hartley, for instance, if Hartley happened to walk past. To anyone who might carry information to Henderson, who had used the word *distraction* today with the same good intentions as always and who did not know what he was actually describing.
He picked up the eraser.
He was not erasing the work — the model was documented elsewhere, the derivation was in both their notebooks and the shared document, the outcome was sound and reproducible. He was erasing the record of the afternoon, which was a different thing. He was erasing the particular trace of the two of them having been in this room together for three hours, working through something that had started as a methodological argument and had ended, at 4:03pm in a shared document, with *it could be an invitation*.
He erased the whiteboard. He left it clean.
He walked to the Henderson lab, collected his bag and his coat, and left the Ashworth Building. Edinburgh was doing its November thing: rain, early dark, the orange of the streetlamps in the wet. He had walked this route home many times. The route had not changed.
He thought about *so have I* and *I've been thinking about it* sitting in the shared document, and about *distraction* in Henderson's office, and about a flash of a different room and a different conversation and the choice he had made then, and he thought about the fact that tonight he had made a different choice — not a large choice, not a declaration, just three words sent before he could reconsider them.
He walked home through the rain. The shared document was on his laptop, on his desk, in the Henderson lab he had just left, and tomorrow it would still be there, with those entries, and Thursday would come, and with it the methodology discussion, and he would have to sit across from her in the conference room — the now-clean conference room — and work on the dynamic directionality revision.
Two days was a manageable interval, he told himself. He had heard those words before. He suspected they had not originally been his.
