He walked home through the same Edinburgh rain that had been falling on both of them twenty minutes earlier, when they had been walking in the same direction and then not.
The city at nine o'clock in December: quiet in the specific way Edinburgh was quiet after the working day had finished and before the later crowds arrived, the wet stone catching the orange of the streetlamps, the cold that had settled in as a permanent condition rather than a weather event. He had been walking through this city for four years. He knew its texture by season, by hour, by the specific quality of light on the Old Town's skyline at different angles of approach.
He thought about the coffee cup.
She had held it with both hands — a small gesture, the kind you didn't notice unless you had been paying attention, and he had been paying attention for thirteen weeks, which meant he noticed. The specific warmth of the gesture: two hands, like the cup required holding rather than just carrying, like warmth was something to be kept rather than just consumed. She did this when she was thinking, he had observed. When the conversation was requiring something from her.
The conversation had been requiring something from her all evening, he thought. Or perhaps: she had been giving something to the conversation all evening, which was different. She had answered his questions honestly, and he had answered hers honestly, and the honesty had been, he was finding, the thing that made the hour and twenty minutes easy.
He turned the corner onto his street. December dark, the flat unlighted, Edinburgh doing what it did.
He thought about the hour and twenty minutes. He had been in conversations that ran long before — methodology discussions, seminar post-mortems, the occasional dinner with Wei-Lin's group that extended past its scheduled end time — but there was a specific quality to this one that was different. The length had not been generated by obligation or circumstance. It had been generated by two people who had more to say and had kept saying it, and who had both, at various points, had the opportunity to signal departure and had not taken it.
The coffee cup had been empty for forty minutes before they left the café. He noted this with the part of him that noted things.
---
He had said her name.
This was the fact that had been sitting with him since the intersection, not as a source of anxiety or second-guessing but as a fact that required examination in the specific way that facts required examination when they told you something about yourself you hadn't fully articulated.
He had said *Yutong.* Not *Song* — the formal register, the professional default he had maintained for thirteen weeks with varying degrees of success. Not a slip — he knew his slips, had catalogued them with the same precision he applied to everything, and this was not in that category. He had stood at the intersection in the Edinburgh December rain and looked at her and said her name because he had decided to say her name. The decision had been simple and complete and had required, he noted, no calculation.
He thought about what it meant to do something without calculation.
He had been calculating for four years. He had been calculating since he was twenty-four, standing in front of a different supervisor in a different city, performing the correct response to the word *distraction.* The calculation had been correct. He had been excellent at it. He had stood at intersections for four years and had gone the correct direction and had not said names that he had not decided to say.
Tonight he had decided.
The deciding had felt different from the calculating. He was still processing what that meant.
He thought about his watch — his left wrist, the watch he touched when he was processing something. He had not touched it tonight, he realized, which was either evidence that he had not been nervous or evidence that the category of response he usually managed with the watch had not been required. He was not certain which. He was fairly certain it was the latter.
He had said her name and had not been nervous about it. This was new information about the current state of things.
He thought about the threshold concept he had been circling for weeks — the door, the email, the cost. He had been at the threshold for a long time. Tonight he had stood at an intersection in December rain and said two syllables and that had not been a crossing of any particular threshold so much as an acknowledgment that the threshold had already been crossed, some weeks ago, in increments small enough not to register as a crossing until you were already on the other side.
---
His flat was dark when he arrived. He went in without turning on the lights immediately, which was not his usual practice — he was a lights-on person, a structure-on-entering person — but tonight there was something that required a moment in the dark first, just sitting with what had happened before it got organized into the categories he used to organize things.
He sat on the couch. Edinburgh rain on the window. Dark.
He thought about what she had said: *Shenzhen taught me to build reference points quickly. And not to need them to be permanent.*
He had heard this sentence in the café and had known, in the specific way you knew things about people you had been paying close attention to, that she was not only talking about Shenzhen. She was describing a way of being in the world that she had developed in response to things that had happened to her — the moves, the contexts, the specific experience of building your understanding of a place quickly because the place was going to change before you had time to do it slowly.
She had been here for thirteen weeks. She was building reference points in Edinburgh with the same efficiency she had developed in Chengdu and Shenzhen, and some of those reference points were, he understood, him. He was part of the Edinburgh she was building. He had become, at some point in the past thirteen weeks, a thing she oriented herself by.
This was not a small thing. He had been, for four years, very careful about not being a thing people oriented themselves by, because orienting yourself by a person created a dependency he had not wanted to be responsible for. He had maintained appropriate distance. He had kept the register professional. He had erased whiteboards and sent notes at unusual hours and said names at airports and had done all of this while telling himself he was maintaining appropriate distance, which he was beginning to understand was not the same as actually maintaining it.
She had built reference points around him. He had been doing the same thing in the other direction for four years and especially for thirteen weeks and had been calling it something other than what it was.
He turned on the lamp.
He thought about the catalog he had been building — the parallel catalog, the one he had been maintaining in the same unnamed file as her, though she had named hers in November and he had not yet named his. He had been precise about not naming it because naming it would have required acknowledging what it was, and acknowledging what it was would have required engaging with the question of what to do about it, and engaging with the question of what to do about it would have required making a decision at a point when he had been convinced that decisions of that kind were not appropriate yet.
The catalog was: her handwriting in two modes, the twelve-degree head tilt when she was processing a counterargument, the way she set things down with precision when she was deciding not to react, the way she had walked into the Ashworth Building on her first day and immediately read its architecture. The catalog was: the notebook squared to the corner of his desk, the timestamp on the 6:47am message, the sound of Mandarin in a conference room on a Thursday afternoon that neither of them had planned for.
The catalog was four years and thirteen weeks of a person he had been paying attention to for reasons he had been calling something other than what they were.
He named it now. The file, the category, the thing he had been maintaining without acknowledgment: what it was, was what it had always been, and it had a name, and the name was simple, and he had known it for a long time.
He sat with the name for a moment. Then he turned on the thesis chapter. He had work to do, and the work was good, and both things were true simultaneously, and this was, he was learning, what choosing looked like.
---
He opened the thesis chapter. This was the practical thing, the thing that had always been the practical thing: work, when everything else required more time to understand than was immediately available. He read the fourth chapter with the focus that work required and that he was, after four years, very good at summoning.
The sentence about complementary frameworks was still there: *The integration of complementary frameworks produces outcomes neither could achieve independently.*
He read it. He thought: yes, and the sentence is also about methodology, and both things are true, and this is fine. He had spent thirteen weeks building a framework in parallel with her — methodological and otherwise — and the outcome was something neither of them would have arrived at independently. This was, he acknowledged, exactly what the sentence said.
He made himself a cup of tea he had not specifically wanted and sat at his desk and thought about the calendar.
Five weeks to submission.
Not six weeks. That had been last week. The weeks were moving now in a way they had not moved before — he could feel the approach of the endpoint in the way you felt deadlines when you were close enough to see their shape. Five weeks was a finite thing. He could hold it in his head and see both ends of it.
And after five weeks: after.
He had been using *after* as a placeholder for something too complex to engage with directly. What he was doing now, in his flat at ten in the evening with tea he didn't want and the thesis chapter on the screen, was something different: he was actually thinking about after.
Henderson had indicated a postdoc. It was not a formal offer — they had not had that conversation — but the indications had been clear enough for someone who knew how to read Henderson's particular mode of communication. Stay, finish the corrections, develop the framework further, work toward the next stage. This was the path of least resistance. This was also, if he was honest about it, the path that required no decision, because it was simply the continuation of what was already in motion.
His father had mentioned, twice, a university position in Taipei. Not a firm thing — a conversation someone had had with someone who had mentioned his name. His father conveyed these things carefully, as information rather than pressure, which was how his father operated and which did not make the information less present.
There were other options. There were always other options, if you looked for them.
He thought about *after* with a new variable in the equation: her.
This was not a thing he had done before. He had always solved for *after* first and then considered whether someone else fit the solution. He had done this at twenty-four and had been correct by the logic's terms and it had cost him four years of not-thinking about the cost. He was not going to make the same calculation again.
What he wanted, he thought — actually wanted, as distinct from what was correct or logical or professionally advisable — was to figure out *after* with her in the picture. Not: solve for *after* and see if she fit. Figure it out *with her as part of the question.* This required having conversations he had not had. It required telling her things about uncertainty and timeline that were not comfortable to tell. It required, in other words, the specific kind of vulnerability that his wound had always told him was the precursor to someone deciding the cost was too high.
He knew this. He had been carrying this wound for four years. He did not expect it to be gone by morning.
But he also thought: she had said *not to need them to be permanent.* She was not a person who required certainty before she was willing to build something. She had been building something for thirteen weeks, carefully and accurately, knowing that the permanent nature of it was not guaranteed.
He could not guarantee the permanent nature of anything either. What he could do was stop treating uncertainty as a reason not to try.
He thought about the email he had written four years ago. He had made a calculation about expected value and had determined that the cost of pursuit was too high given the uncertainty. What he had failed to include was the cost of not pursuing. He had assumed the prior state was stable. This assumption had been incorrect. The prior state had a leak in it, and the leak had been accruing for four years, and the debt was considerably larger than the calculation had predicted.
He was a scientist. Scientists updated their models when the evidence required it. The evidence required an update.
---
He worked on the chapter for an hour and thirty minutes. The work was good — the kind of good that came from being genuinely present with the material, which he was, because the material was good and because presence with good work was one of the things he had always been able to do regardless of what else was happening.
He revised three sections. He resolved an argument about notation that had been circling for a week. He read the fourth chapter's conclusion and thought: this is almost done. This is going to be something.
At eleven forty-five he closed the laptop.
He looked out the window at Edinburgh in December: the orange of the streetlamps, the dark rooflines, the rain that had been raining all evening and showed no signs of stopping because Edinburgh rain made commitments. Somewhere in the direction of Marchmont, she was in her flat with the desk facing the window, having put on the kettle and stood at the window and thought whatever she was thinking.
He did not know what she was thinking. He knew the shape of how she thought — he had been accumulating the grammar of it for thirteen weeks — but the specific content of tonight's thinking was not available to him, and this was fine. It was enough to know that she was there, in the city, having walked through the same rain, having said *goodnight* and gone her direction.
He thought about the question of after not as a problem to be solved before anything else could proceed, but as a conversation to be had — a conversation that required two people, and that both of them were now, he believed, ready to have. Not tonight. Not this week, probably. But soon. The thesis was five weeks from submission and the conversations had to happen before submission turned into after and after arrived without preparation.
He went to bed.
He lay in the dark and thought about *disorienting, in a way that was also useful* and about two people who had learned to orient in uncertain places and who had, over thirteen weeks, each become part of the other's Edinburgh.
He thought: this is what it looks like when you stop calculating and start choosing.
He thought this was better than calculating.
He had been calculating since he was twenty-four and had gotten very good at it and had produced, by the calculation's own terms, a correct result. The result was a thesis five weeks from submission and a career on track and a city he had built reference points in and a person who had been in his peripheral awareness for four years and his direct attention for thirteen weeks and who had, tonight, said *goodnight* in the particular register of someone who intended to say it again.
He was right about this. He did not yet know how right, or how much Edinburgh was going to ask of both of them before the choosing was complete, but the direction was clear and the direction felt, for the first time in a long time, like the correct one rather than just the manageable one.
Outside, Edinburgh kept its rain. He slept.
He had been good at waiting. Now he was going to be good at something else.
You've reached the end of this chapter
He walked home through the same Edinburgh rain that had been falling on both of them twenty minutes earlier, when they had been walking in the same direction and then not.
