He walked back to the Henderson lab after lunch.
This was his usual route — Forrest Road to Bristo Place, through the Ashworth Building's main entrance, up the stairs to the third floor, the familiar corridor with its glass-paneled doors and its particular smell of coffee and old paper and the specific quality of air that characterized buildings where people thought carefully for long periods. He had walked this route hundreds of times. Today it had a different weight — not heavier, not lighter, just differently distributed, the way weight shifted when something important had changed position.
*I want you to stay.*
He was still carrying those three words the way you carried things that had landed precisely where they were meant to land. Not with anxiety, not with the managed distance he would have applied four months ago — just carrying them, present, aware, allowing them to be what they were.
He sat at his desk. He opened his email.
He had, over the past four years, made a significant number of decisions in this lab at this desk. Some of them had been large and some had been small and most of them had been about the work, which was what most of his decisions had been about, which had been by design. He had arranged his decision-making infrastructure so that the work was always the clearest question, the one with the most available data and the most evaluable outcomes. Everything else he had kept in the category of things that could be deferred until after.
Today the work was still the work. He was going to finish a thesis chapter. He was going to accept a postdoc. These were work decisions, professional decisions, evaluable by the same metrics as four years of previous decisions. And they were also, simultaneously and without contradiction, decisions that included *I want you to stay* as a variable, which was the first time in four years that a decision of this kind had included a variable of that kind, and which made the decisions different in the way that correct equations were different from approximations: not necessarily harder, but more accurate.
Henderson's message was still there, the way he had left it that morning before going to the café — the formal offer, the details, the open question waiting for a reply. He looked at it for a moment. He thought about the conversation at the café, about *okay* and what it had meant when he said it and what it continued to mean now that he was sitting in the Henderson lab with the decision in front of him.
He began to type.
---
The reply took three minutes.
This was not because it was difficult. It was because he wrote carefully even when what he had to say was simple, and what he had to say was simple: he was accepting the postdoc. Two sentences. No qualification, no elaboration, no performed enthusiasm that would have been true in its way but would also have been a version of the old managed-presentation register. Just: yes, he would stay, thank you, he looked forward to discussing the details.
He sent it.
He sat back.
The Henderson lab had its Tuesday afternoon quality — a second-year working at the far end, the equipment running, Edinburgh rain on the window. Sicheng sat in the specific silence of a decision made and sent and now existing in the world rather than in his head, and thought about what had just happened.
He had accepted a postdoc in Edinburgh. This was not the same as it would have been if he had accepted it last week, or last month, or at the quarterly check-in when Henderson had first suggested the direction. Last week he would have accepted it for the right professional reasons, cleanly, without the weight of *I want you to stay* to carry alongside it. He would have accepted it and it would have been a good decision and it would also have been, in the specific way that decisions made without the full information tended to be, incomplete.
This decision had the full information. He had included the variable that should have been in the equation for four years. The equation had not simplified — there were still the questions about family and home and the complicated relationship between Edinburgh and Taipei and what it meant to build your life in a place you had arrived at as a temporary arrangement. But it was the correct equation now. He was solving for the right thing.
He opened the thesis chapter.
---
Edinburgh in December at two o'clock had the specific quality of a city that had accepted the early dark as a permanent feature of the season and was proceeding with its business anyway. The rain was light — the mist-quality, not committing to being weather so much as being atmosphere. Through the window he could see the stone of the building opposite, darker than usual, and the particular orange-gray of Edinburgh sky in winter, and the edge of the street below where people were moving with the purposeful efficiency of people who had somewhere to be and intended to get there.
He had somewhere to be. He was there.
He thought about Taipei.
He had been in Edinburgh for four years and two months, and in that time Taipei had receded from immediate to present-but-distant to something he thought about with the specific quality of thought that characterized places and people you loved that were not where you were. His father. His sister. The specific quality of Taipei autumn. The neighborhood he had grown up in. The university where his father still worked. All of it real, all of it his, all of it continuing without him in the way that places and people continued when someone went far away and did not come back yet.
He had not come back yet.
He had made a decision, today, that meant he would not be coming back soon. The postdoc was two years. Two years was a long time to be away from the people you came from. He had already been away four years. He was choosing to continue being away.
He sat with this. Not with guilt — or not only with guilt — but with the specific weight of a choice that required acknowledging all of its costs, including the ones that were not about him. His father had mentioned Taipei twice. His father would understand the postdoc, would call it professionally correct, would not say what he actually felt about it, because that was how his father operated and because his father understood, having spent his own career navigating the space between professional obligation and personal desire, that these choices were rarely clean.
He would call his father this weekend. He had been meaning to call his father more often for four years. He would do it this weekend.
He thought about what the call would contain. The postdoc first — Henderson, two years, the direction, the funding. His father would listen and ask the correct questions and would not say the thing underneath the questions, which was: *are you happy there?* His father had been asking this in subtext for four years, and Sicheng had been answering in subtext, and the subtext had been: *I am well, the work is good, I am doing what I came to do.* This had been accurate. It had also been, in the way that accurate incomplete answers were incomplete, not the whole thing.
He thought about what it would feel like to answer differently. Not to give his father a full account of everything that had happened in the past fourteen weeks — some things accumulated in private before they were available for sharing — but to say, in the register his father understood, that Edinburgh had become something more than a temporary arrangement.
He did not know if he was ready to say that yet. He thought he might be, for the first time.
---
The thought arrived in the particular way that important thoughts arrived when you had been circling them for long enough that the avoidance itself had started to produce friction: not suddenly, but with the quality of something that had been waiting to be acknowledged.
She knew the outcome of four years ago. She did not know the reason.
He had written the email at twenty-four with the specific architecture of someone who had decided not to say the real thing. The real thing was not *I am choosing the work.* The real thing was: *I believe the work is what I am owed to be doing, and I believe that what I want for myself is less important than what I have been trusted to accomplish, and I have been told by someone I respect that what I want for myself is a distraction from what I have been trusted to accomplish, and I do not believe my desire has the right to exist in competition with that obligation.*
This was not *I don't want this.* This was *I don't deserve to want this.* These were different things. She had read the email as the first. She had been right about the outcome because the outcome was the same — she had withdrawn, he had not pursued, the door had closed. But the reason was the second, and the second was the part that was still unaddressed between them.
He thought about what it would mean for her to continue not knowing the reason.
She was a scientist. She worked with evidence and she drew conclusions from evidence and she had, four years ago, drawn a conclusion from available evidence that was correct in its terms. He had no complaint about that. The conclusion was what a careful person drew from the evidence she had been given, which was the outcome without the mechanism. He had provided the outcome: the door closed, the silence, the withdrawal. He had not provided the mechanism: the belief that his desire didn't have the right to exist, the supervisor's word, the specific architecture of a twenty-four-year-old's wound.
She had been working with incomplete data for four years. She had been working with it efficiently and accurately and without complaint, in the way she worked with everything. He did not feel the need to correct the record as a justification — he was not trying to relitigate the past — but as a completion. The data was more complete now. She deserved to have it.
She had said, on Saturday, *No. It isn't.* She had said, on Tuesday, *I want you to stay.* She had been doing, over fourteen weeks, the work of building something in the specific register of someone who had decided to be honest. She deserved the same from him — not just the decisions made with her as a variable, not just the actions that communicated what he felt, but the specific honesty of: here is why the door closed, here is what I believed about myself, here is what it cost, and here is why I am telling you now.
He was not going to do this today. There was a thesis to finish and a postdoc to start and a relationship — because that was the word, he thought, the simple accurate word — a relationship to build in the ordinary way that relationships were built, which was incrementally, over time, in the accumulated weight of real things said and real things done. He was not going to make a speech about the email four years ago in the Henderson lab on a Tuesday afternoon.
But he was going to say it. Before submission, before the thesis became a past obligation and the postdoc became a present one, before they moved into whatever the next version of this was — he was going to tell her why the door had been closed and why it had been him closing it and why he was not going to do that again.
He opened the thesis chapter.
---
He worked for two hours.
The final section of chapter four — the conclusion that drew together everything the chapter had built, that stated clearly what the dynamic directionality framework contributed and what it left for future work and why the integration with the Whitmore lab's methodology represented a genuine advancement of the field. He wrote it with the specific attention that good conclusions required: not restating what had already been said, not performing a significance the work didn't have, just being exact about what was true and what it meant.
It was good work. He knew it was good work in the particular way you knew when you had been inside something long enough to have perspective on it — not pride exactly, but recognition. This was a contribution. Henderson's trust in the direction had been correct. His own four years of work had produced something that was not just competent but genuinely useful.
He thought about the sentence he had been carrying for weeks: *The integration of complementary frameworks produces outcomes neither could achieve independently.* He had written it about the methodology. It was also about something else. He had known this when he wrote it and had watched the knowing accumulate into something he no longer needed to call anything other than what it was.
He sat for a moment with the chapter closed, the laptop resting in front of him, the Edinburgh rain on the window. He thought about the word *relationship* — the word he had used to himself in the middle of the afternoon, the simple accurate word. He had not used it before. He had used *situation* and *collaboration* and *the thing between them* and *what's between us* and a number of other formulations that were accurate without being specific. *Relationship* was specific. It committed to something. He had used it to himself in the Henderson lab on a Tuesday afternoon and the sky had not fallen, and he noted this as useful information about the current state of his own internal framework.
He saved the chapter. He closed the laptop.
Edinburgh outside the window: the mist had committed to being rain now, the standard Edinburgh commitment to its own atmospheric agenda. He had lived in this city for four years and two months, and he had watched it rain more times than he could count, and it had never stopped raining and he had never stopped noticing it, which he thought was probably the correct relationship to have with weather that was a permanent feature rather than an event.
He was going to be here for two more years, at minimum.
He thought about this. Two more years of this weather, this building, this particular view from this window. Two more years of Thursdays and shared documents and the café on Forrest Road and the corridor between two labs with glass-paneled doors and a sight line he had learned to adjust fifteen degrees to use.
Two more years of this city, which had a person in it who had said *I want you to stay* and whom he had said *okay* to and who was, right now, in the Whitmore lab across the hallway, doing her own work in her own particular quality of attention.
He stood up. He put on his coat. He turned off the light.
He passed the conference room on his way out. The whiteboard was clean — he had erased it weeks ago, and it had stayed clean, and he had been adding things to the shared document instead, and the document had become what it had become. He looked at the clean whiteboard for a moment. Then he continued toward the stairs.
Edinburgh in the dark at six o'clock, wet stone and orange light, the cold that was not yet winter but was what Edinburgh did in December: the specific, patient, committed cold of a city that had been this temperature for several months and intended to remain so.
He turned up his collar.
He thought about the conversation he was going to have — not when, not exactly, but the fact of it, the specific honesty of it, the thing he had decided in the Henderson lab on a Tuesday afternoon. He thought about her patient exactness, about the way she said direct things clearly without making them into more than they were. He thought about telling her the real reason and about what that would require from him: not the actions, which were the easy part, but the specific vulnerability of saying *I believed I didn't deserve to want this,* which was the hardest kind of thing to say because it was the truest.
He walked home through the Edinburgh rain.
Four weeks to submission. Then corrections, viva, spring postdoc start, two more years. Then: more, probably, in configurations he could not fully predict but which he intended to navigate with more information than he had been using before.
He had been, for four years, solving for after first and seeing if she fit the solution. He was done with that.
The rain continued. He walked through it. Edinburgh kept its weather, its stone, its patient dark. He was carrying the weight of a decision made with the right information, a chapter nearly finished, a conversation planned, and the particular forward-looking quality of someone who has stopped deferring and started choosing.
This was better than calculating.
He had known it would be.
