The room was smaller than the photos had suggested.
Yutong stood in the doorway of her postgraduate accommodation for a moment before stepping fully inside, conducting the same rapid spatial assessment she applied to every new environment: exits, natural light, desk placement, distance to the nearest kitchen. The room offered one window facing a gray courtyard, a desk that would do, and walls the particular shade of institutional white that suggested many people had lived here before her and left nothing of themselves behind.
She approved of this. She intended to do the same.
Her suitcase was open on the bed within four minutes. She unpacked the way she did everything — methodically, without sentiment, each item going to its designated place as if she had already lived here long enough to have designated places. Stationery in the left drawer. Laptop charger coiled beside the desk. The single photograph she'd brought — her mother and her grandmother at a kitchen table in Chengdu, not looking at the camera — placed face-down in the bottom of the drawer where it would not distract her and could not be accidentally seen.
She looked at the photograph for a moment before closing the drawer. Her mother's hands on the table. Her grandmother's profile, turned toward the window. Two women who had never left Sichuan, whose entire understanding of where Yutong was going existed in the form of a city name and a university ranking they had looked up together on a phone with a cracked screen.
She closed the drawer.
Outside, Edinburgh was raining.
She had been warned about this. She had done extensive research on Edinburgh before accepting the offer, the kind of research that covered average annual rainfall, the specific microclimates of the university campus, the opening hours of every library on a Sunday. She had read twelve graduate student blogs and cross-referenced their experiences with official university documentation. She had been, in every measurable way, prepared.
The rain looked different from inside, though. Heavier than statistics. More committed.
Her phone buzzed. Her mother's name on the screen.
"我到了," she said when she answered. I've arrived.
Her mother's voice came through with the particular warmth and particular worry that were, in her family, indistinguishable from each other. How was the flight. Was the room clean. Had she eaten. Did she need money. Was it cold.
"妈，我很好。" Mom, I'm fine.
She was fine. She answered the questions in the order they were asked, providing accurate information efficiently, the same way she answered any inquiry. The room was adequate. She had eaten on the plane. She had sufficient funds. It was cold but manageable.
What she did not say: the flight had been strange in a way she was still processing. What she did not say: she had spent four hours and twenty minutes eleven inches away from someone she had spent four years successfully not thinking about, and the success of that project now felt less absolute than it had in Shenzhen. What she did not say: she was sitting on the edge of a narrow bed in a country she had never been to before, and for approximately thirty seconds between hanging up her coat and opening her suitcase, she had felt something that was not fear and not excitement and not quite loneliness, but lived in the territory adjacent to all three.
"好好照顾自己," her mother said before hanging up. Take care of yourself.
"我知道了。" I know.
She did know. She had been taking care of herself for a long time.

The Whitmore lab was on the third floor of the Ashworth Building, which was exactly where the campus map said it would be, which Yutong appreciated about campus maps. Her supervisor — Dr. Patricia Osei, whose publication record Yutong had memorized before their first video call — met her at the lab door with the brisk warmth of someone who had welcomed many new researchers and had a system for it.
The desk she was assigned was near the window. Good light. She noted this as a positive variable.
The other lab members introduced themselves with varying degrees of enthusiasm. A second-year named Marcus who spoke too quickly and seemed genuinely pleased to have someone new to explain things to. A third-year named Aiko who offered a single nod and returned to her screen, which Yutong found more reassuring than the enthusiasm. A postdoc whose name she immediately filed and retained, because she retained everything, and who asked which undergrad institution she'd come from with the particular inflection that meant the answer would be assessed.
"Shenzhen University," she said. "Before that, Sichuan."
The postdoc's assessment was visible for exactly one second before he replaced it with something more neutral. She had seen this before. She would see it again. She filed this too, in the category labeled: *expected, manageable, irrelevant to the work.*
It was not irrelevant to the work, exactly. She understood this. The work happened inside institutions, and institutions were made of people, and people carried their assessments with them into every interaction whether they intended to or not. What she meant was that it would not change the work itself — the data would not know where she came from, the proteins would not care, the results would speak in a language that had no accent.
This was the thing she held onto, in moments like this. The democracy of evidence.
Dr. Osei walked her through the lab protocols, the equipment sign-out system, the informal hierarchy of whose bench space was whose even when it wasn't officially designated. Yutong listened, asked two precise questions, and took notes in the margins of her notebook in the compressed shorthand she'd developed over years of needing to record more than she had space for.
She was being shown the supply cabinet when Dr. Osei's phone rang.
"Two minutes," Dr. Osei said, and stepped away.
Yutong stood in the hallway and waited, which she was efficient at.
The Ashworth Building's third floor had the particular ecology of shared academic space: lab doors with keypads, whiteboards visible through narrow windows, the faint chemical smell that lived in the ventilation of every research building she'd ever worked in. She had stood in hallways like this in Shenzhen, in Beijing, once briefly at a conference in Singapore. The geography changed. The smell didn't. There was something grounding about this, the way certain constants persisted across all the variables.
She turned slightly, following the hallway's curve, and stopped.
The door was twenty feet away. Glass panel at eye height. A nameplate in standard university font:
*HENDERSON LABORATORY — PROF. R. HENDERSON*
She had known it was here. She had known it would be on this floor — the Ashworth Building housed three major research groups, and she had read the department's organizational structure with the same thoroughness she applied to everything. She had known, in the abstract way that you know things you've researched carefully, that Lin Sicheng worked twenty feet from where she would be spending the next three to four years of her life.
Knowing it and seeing the nameplate were not, it turned out, the same thing.
There was a particular quality to reading a name in a physical space that did not exist when you encountered it on a page or a screen. The nameplate made it architectural. Permanent in the specific way that buildings are permanent — not forever, but far longer than any individual circumstance. *Henderson Laboratory* had been here before her and would be here after, and *Lin Sicheng* worked inside it, and this was simply the configuration of the world she had chosen to enter.
She looked through the glass panel. The lab was occupied — two researchers she didn't recognize, a bench covered in equipment, a whiteboard dense with notation. He wasn't there. She registered his absence with more precision than she would have preferred.
Her fingers found the edge of her notebook. Pressed against the cover once, evenly. Grounding.
*Inconvenient variable*, she labeled it, with the same efficient taxonomy she used for everything. *Acknowledge, categorize, continue.*
The categorization was accurate. The continuing required slightly more effort than she would have expected, given four years of successful practice.
She turned back to the supply cabinet.
Dr. Osei returned forty seconds later, phone away, seamlessly resuming the tour. Yutong followed, took notes, asked one more question. She did not look back at the Henderson lab door.
---
The first-year orientation was in a seminar room on the second floor, fourteen new PhD students arranged in the vague semicircle that people form when given chairs but no specific instruction. Yutong chose a seat with sightlines to the door — habit, not anxiety — and opened her notebook.
The session was run by the department's graduate coordinator, a tired-looking man named Dr. Callum Reid who had clearly given this talk many times and had stopped performing enthusiasm for it some years ago. Yutong found this reassuring. She trusted people who had stopped performing.
He covered funding timelines, supervision expectations, the ethics approval process, and the politics of shared equipment with the weary accuracy of someone who had watched too many PhD students make the same mistakes. She took notes on all of it.
Midway through, a student two seats down — a tall German boy who had introduced himself as Tobias — raised his hand.
"What's the relationship like between the different labs? Collaborative, or—" he gestured vaguely "—competitive?"
Dr. Reid's expression did something complicated. "The university encourages interdisciplinary collaboration," he said, in the tone of a man reciting policy he had not written. "In practice, different groups have different relationships. The Whitmore and Henderson labs, for instance, have — distinct methodological approaches." A pause. "It's best to be aware of the landscape."
*Distinct methodological approaches.* She wrote it down, not because she needed the reminder, but because writing things made them concrete, and she preferred her variables concrete.
She had read enough of both labs' published work to understand what *distinct methodological approaches* meant in practice: Henderson's group operated on a computational framework that Whitmore's work had explicitly critiqued in two papers, one of which had generated a published response, which had generated a further response, which had never quite resolved into agreement. Scientific disagreement dressed in the formal language of peer review, which was not so different from any other kind of disagreement.
In the next three to four years, her professional identity would be built within Whitmore's framework. That was simply true. It had been true before she arrived; it would be true regardless of who worked twenty feet away.
She was aware, in the careful way she was aware of most things she would have preferred not to be aware of, that this was easier to believe in the abstract than in a building where the Henderson lab nameplate was visible from the supply cabinet.
*Edinburgh is smaller than people expect.* She had said this at baggage claim, not quite to him, almost to herself, and she had meant it as an observation about the city's geography. She was beginning to understand she had also meant it as a warning.
---
She found the library by following the map and arrived at her preferred working conditions by following habit: a corner table, adequate distance from other researchers, natural light from the window on her left. She arranged her materials — laptop, notebook, two papers she needed to finish reading — and settled in.
The particular silence of a good library was one of the few things that felt the same everywhere. Shenzhen, Edinburgh, it didn't matter. The hush of concentrated work, the occasional sound of pages turning, the sense of being surrounded by people who had, for the time being, agreed to want nothing except to understand something better. She had spent more hours in libraries than almost anywhere else and felt, in them, something adjacent to peace.
She was forty minutes into the first paper when she heard the door.
She did not look up. She had trained herself out of looking up at every sound years ago — libraries required a particular discipline of attention, and she had it.
But she heard the particular quality of the footsteps — unhurried, purposeful, the steps of someone who knew exactly where they were going — and heard them stop, and heard a chair being pulled out, and the specific sound of a laptop being placed on a table. And something in her peripheral awareness registered a location before she'd decided to register it, the way your body sometimes knows things before you give it permission.
Corner table. Diagonal from her. Left side of the room.
She did not look up.
She read the same sentence for the fourth time. It was a good sentence, discussing the methodological limitations of existing approaches to protein interaction mapping, and she had understood it perfectly on the first read and continued to understand it on subsequent reads and understood it no better for the repetition.
She looked at the sentence. She did not look at the corner table.
The library's afternoon light shifted as clouds moved outside. Someone coughed near the entrance. A phone buzzed twice and was silenced. She turned the page.
She was aware of him the way she was aware of a change in air pressure — not as a specific sensation, more as a shift in the room's composition. The knowledge that the space was configured differently than it had been. She did not examine this awareness. She filed it under *inconvenient variable* with the rest of its category and continued reading.
She could leave. She had been here forty minutes, had accomplished the minimum she'd set out to accomplish, and had a reasonable list of other tasks that needed doing: groceries, a second trip to the lab to collect a paper she'd left on her desk, the email she needed to send her previous supervisor confirming her safe arrival. Any of these would constitute a legitimate reason to close her laptop and go.
She did not close her laptop.
She continued reading. Page by page, paragraph by paragraph, with the focused attention of someone who was absolutely not tracking the presence of another person in her peripheral vision. The methodology section was dense and rewarding. The results were interesting. The discussion raised three questions she would want to return to.
Later, she would note — in the same internal ledger where she kept all observations about herself that required examination — that she had been more productive in those two hours than in most of the flight, and that she did not fully understand why. There was something about the silence between two people who had agreed, without speaking, to occupy the same space without demanding anything of each other. Something that felt, if she was precise about it, like the particular rest of not having to explain yourself.
She recognized this feeling. She did not examine it.
She was near the end of the second paper when she looked up to rest her eyes — a standard practice, recommended for prolonged screen use, with no other significance — and found that he was already looking in her direction.
Not at her, exactly. The kind of gaze that was directed at a middle distance, unfocused, the look of someone whose mind was elsewhere. But his eyes were pointed toward her corner of the room, and when her movement registered in his peripheral vision, his focus sharpened.
A beat. The same quality of silence as baggage claim — held, assessed, resolved.
He looked back at his laptop.
She looked back at her paper.
They worked in the same space for another hour and forty minutes. She knew this precisely because she noted the time when his presence had registered — 3:47pm — and the time when she heard his chair move and his laptop close and his steps cross the library toward the exit — 5:31pm. She did not track the time because she was monitoring him. She tracked time habitually, the same way she tracked everything.
She did not say goodbye. He did not say goodbye. Neither of these things were surprising or required explanation.
What required slightly more examination was the fact that when he left, the room felt different — not emptier, exactly, but differently composed, the air pressure returned to what it had been before he arrived, which was fine and normal and exactly what she would have preferred.
She closed her laptop at 5:45 and walked back to her accommodation in the rain.
---
Edinburgh at night was something she hadn't researched adequately.
The statistics had covered rainfall and temperature and hours of daylight. They had not covered the particular quality of the city after dark — the way the Old Town's buildings held light differently than modern architecture, absorbing it rather than reflecting it, so that the streets seemed to glow faintly from within. The way the castle, visible from her courtyard if she angled her head correctly, sat above the city with the specific gravity of something that had been there long enough to stop explaining itself.
She stood at her window for longer than she'd intended, which was unlike her.
She had come here for the work. This was not a complicated fact. She had a supervisor whose methodology she respected and a research question she had been building toward for two years and a scholarship that represented more than itself — it represented her mother's careful budgeting and her grandmother's quiet belief and every teacher who had told her she was exceptional and every voice that had wondered, usually without quite saying so, whether exceptional was enough for a girl from Sichuan with no connections and no institutional pedigree. She was the first person in her family to leave China. The first to have a passport with stamps from more than one country. The first to sit in a library in Scotland on a Tuesday afternoon and read papers that people in this country had written, and understand them completely, and have questions that went beyond them.
She was here to answer the question conclusively. The one that had been asked of her, in various registers, since she was twelve years old and had tested into a school she wasn't supposed to test into.
There was no part of that project that involved Lin Sicheng.
She turned from the window, opened her laptop, and checked her email. Lab announcements, a welcome message from the graduate school, a forwarded calendar invite from Dr. Osei.
She opened the calendar invite. Shared seminar series, Thursdays, Ashworth Building Seminar Room 2. Attendance expected for all postgraduate researchers.
She scrolled through the upcoming schedule.
Presenters listed by name and lab affiliation. October through December, sixteen sessions covering the research groups across the building. She read the names efficiently, filing each one, until she reached the third Thursday of the month.
*Lin Sicheng — Henderson Laboratory — "Computational frameworks for dynamic protein network analysis."*
She looked at this for a moment.
Then she closed the laptop, turned off the light, and lay in the narrow accommodation bed listening to the rain against the window.
Edinburgh was smaller than people expected. She had known this. She had said it out loud, almost to herself, at baggage claim, and she had meant it as a simple geographic fact about a city of half a million people that nonetheless managed to put the same two people on a flight, in the same building, in the same library on the same afternoon.
She had meant it as observation.
She was beginning to understand it was also a question.
What she would do with the smallness of this city — with the Thursday seminar and the Henderson lab nameplate and the particular quality of a shared library silence — was something she had not yet determined. She was good at determining things. She would determine this.
She closed her eyes.
Outside, Edinburgh kept raining, with the patient commitment of a city that had been doing this for centuries and saw no reason to stop.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The room was smaller than the photos had suggested.
Yutong stood in the doorway of her postgraduate accommodation for a moment before stepping fully inside, conducting the same rapid spatial assessment she applied to every new environment: exits, natural light, desk placement, distance to the nearest kitchen. The room offered one window facing a gray courtyard, a desk that would do, and walls the particular shade of institutional white that suggested many people had lived here before her and left nothing of themselves behind.
