She walked to Dr. Osei's office at nine fifty-five.
She had prepared for this conversation the way she prepared for things that required both honesty and precision: by knowing what she wanted to say, in what order, and why. The disclosure would be brief — here is what I want you to know, here is why I'm telling you directly, here is my assessment of the research integrity implications. Dr. Osei was a reasonable person. The conversation would be manageable.
She had woken up thinking about it. About the disclosure, yes — but also about his text from last night: *Glad it went well.* He had read her *Well. She was professional. We'll talk later* and had taken it at face value, had replied with warmth and had said *see you tomorrow.* He trusted her. He trusted her in the specific way of someone who had learned, over four years and twenty-two weeks, that when she said something she meant it precisely as said.
She had said *well* and *professional* and *we'll talk later* and had not said London.
She had not said London because she had not known, when she sent the text, whether London was hers to say or whether it needed more time. She told herself this now, walking to Dr. Osei's office, and knew it was partially true and knew that the partial truth was doing some work it shouldn't be doing.
She thought about the shared document — about eighty-seven entries, about the second channel that had operated underneath the professional record, about all the things that had been said sideways and then directly and then directly in the space outside the document. She had watched herself move, over twenty-two weeks, from someone who communicated in indirection to someone who said the real thing. She had valued this. She had thought it was something she had built.
She knocked. Dr. Osei said come in.
The office had the quality of someone who used it for actual work: papers in organized stacks, two plants on the windowsill, a whiteboard with notes from a previous meeting still visible. Dr. Osei looked up from her screen. The expression was warm — Dr. Osei was consistently warm without performing it, which was one of the things Yutong had come to value about working with her.
"Sit down. I'm glad you could come in." A pause. "Before we get to the review — I wanted to mention something. An opportunity."
She sat. She was listening.
"UCL," Dr. Osei said. "Computational biology. There's a postdoc opening in the Marchetti lab — you may have heard of his work on network dynamics. Excellent group. Funded for three years." She moved some papers on her desk, found a printed email. "I recommended your name. The application deadline is in March. I wanted to make sure you knew it was available."
She looked at Dr. Osei. She received the information with the professional composure she applied to things she needed to process before responding.
"Thank you," she said. "I'll look into it."
"You'd be a strong candidate," Dr. Osei said. "The methodology paper has been noticed. The Marchetti group works in adjacent territory."
"I appreciate you thinking of me." A beat. "I'll consider it carefully."
She meant this. She also already knew, in the specific way that she knew things that she had not yet articulated as knowing, that the knowing and the doing were going to take a while to arrive at the same place.
"Good." Dr. Osei set the email aside. "Now — the review. Your second-year documentation is excellent. The protein interaction dataset is producing strong results, and the collaboration paper is exactly the kind of cross-lab contribution the department is interested in supporting." She paused. "Which actually leads me to something else. Before you say anything — I want you to know that I'm already aware the collaboration has been more than professional."
She looked at Dr. Osei.
"I was going to tell you that today," she said.
"I know," Dr. Osei said. "That's why I said it first — so you wouldn't have to navigate the disclosure alone." A slight smile. "I've been a supervisor for twenty years. I notice things."
She sat with this. Dr. Osei had known. Not from anything Aiko had said, not from anything visible in the research record — just from twenty years of watching people work together and knowing the difference between professional collaboration and something else.
"The work stands on its own," she said. "The methodology contribution is separate. I want to be clear about that."
"It is clear," Dr. Osei said. "The paper is what it is — a genuine contribution from two different methodological traditions. I have no concerns about the research integrity." A pause. "What I have concerns about is what happens next, as the paper draws attention and the collaboration becomes more visible to people outside this building."
"Henderson is already concerned about that," she said.
Dr. Osei looked at her steadily. "I imagine he is," she said. "Henderson is careful. He will want the postdoc to be unimpeachable." A pause. "Which is why the London opportunity is worth considering."
She heard this. She heard what Dr. Osei was and was not saying.
"You think I should go," she said.
"I think you should consider it," Dr. Osei said carefully. "For your own career, first. The Marchetti lab is excellent — this would be good for you regardless of anything else. But yes — it would also simplify some things." A pause. "I'm not telling you what to do. I'm making sure you have the full picture."
The full picture. She sat with that phrase and thought about what picture she had been building for twenty-two weeks and what it would mean to be handed a different frame for it.
She thought about the word *simplify.* She turned it over in her mind — the specific way that Dr. Osei had said it, the institutional register it carried, the fact that Dr. Osei was someone who chose words carefully and had said *simplify* rather than *resolve* or *eliminate* or *protect.* Simplify: to make less complicated. The implication being that there was currently a complication, and that the complication was her presence in Edinburgh.
She stood. She thanked Dr. Osei. She walked out.
---
She walked back to the Whitmore lab.
Marcus was there. Aiko was there. The lab had its midday quality — the work proceeding, the equipment running, the ordinary occupation of a space built for thinking. She sat at her desk. She opened her laptop.
There was an email from Dr. Osei, sent while she had been walking back: the London opportunity, forwarded with the subject line *For your consideration.* The email from UCL was attached. She opened it.
UCL Department of Computational Biology. The Marchetti lab. Three-year postdoc, starting September. Funding confirmed. Application deadline: March 15.
She read it once. She read it twice. She closed the attachment.
She sat at her desk in the Whitmore lab and did not open the shared document. She did not text him. She looked at her protein interaction dataset, which was open in another window, and she did not work on it either.
She thought about the London opportunity as a research opportunity — separate from everything else, assessed on its own terms. The Marchetti lab was excellent. She knew his work. The network dynamics methodology was adjacent to her protein interaction research and would extend in directions she had been thinking about. The funding was confirmed. Three years in London was not a bad outcome for a researcher at her stage, and if she had seen this email in September, before Edinburgh had accumulated the specific weight that Edinburgh now carried, she would have applied without hesitation.
She was not in September. She was here, and Edinburgh had the weight it had.
She thought about Henderson's office. She thought about *optics* — the word that had done something to him that she had seen and named correctly: the wound activating, the old language arriving alongside the new situation. She had said *go home and sleep on it* because the thing to do when a wound activates is not to act from it but to wait until the knowing and the feeling are closer together.
She had said that to him. She had meant it.
She was now sitting with a piece of information — London, March deadline, Dr. Osei's careful not-quite-recommendation — and she was not telling him. She was aware of this. She was aware that not telling him was a choice, and that the choice was not being made from a neutral position.
She thought: if I go to London, the visibility question goes away. The "optics" concern goes away. His viva is uncomplicated. The postdoc starts clean. He doesn't have to navigate the questions that "among others" implies.
She thought: this is something I can do for him.
She thought: this is exactly what he did four years ago.
The thought arrived with a specific quality — not sudden, not dramatic, just: clear, the way things were clear when you had been paying attention long enough to recognize a pattern when it appeared in a new context. He had closed the door from the inside because he had decided he didn't deserve to have it open. She was sitting here thinking about walking through a London door because she had decided she could protect him from the outside.
Both were choices made from protection. Both bypassed the actual person. Both substituted a decision made alone for a conversation that could have been had.
She knew this. She sat with the knowing.
She did not text him.
---
His text arrived at two o'clock: *How did it go?*
She looked at the message. She thought about what *how did it go* was asking. It was asking about Dr. Osei. It was asking whether the disclosure had been manageable. It was asking whether she was all right.
She typed: *Well. She was professional. We'll talk later.*
She sent it. She looked at what she had sent.
Technically true. She had told Dr. Osei. Dr. Osei had been professional. They could talk later. All of this was accurate.
She had not mentioned London. She had not mentioned Dr. Osei's careful framing of the opportunity as something that would *simplify some things.* She had not mentioned that she was sitting in the Whitmore lab with a March 15 deadline in her inbox and a wound telling her that the cleanest thing she could do for him was to not be in Edinburgh when the viva happened.
His reply: *Good. Glad it went well. See you tomorrow.*
She held her phone. She thought about *see you tomorrow* — about the Thursday that was coming, about walking into the conference room again, about sitting across the table from him in the space where the seven words had been said and where the paper had been built and where, tomorrow, she would be carrying a piece of information she had not told him.
She set her phone down.
She returned to her dataset. She worked for three hours with the focused attention of someone who was keeping their professional life functioning while their other life operated at a different level, which was something she was good at, which was in some ways the problem. She had been good at compartmentalization for a long time. She had built the compartmentalization as a feature. The compartmentalization was also what allowed the London email to sit in one part of her mind while the rest of her went on working, and the going-on-working felt like coping and was also, she knew, a form of avoidance.
---
At six she closed her laptop and walked home.
Edinburgh February in the early evening: the light that was beginning to have a different quality from January, the cold that was still Edinburgh cold but slightly less committed to itself, the city proceeding with its usual patient business. She walked through it and did not feel the usual quality of Edinburgh-settling-around-her that she had been noting since November. She noticed that she did not feel it. She filed this as a data point about her current state.
She reached Marchmont. She made tea. She sat at the desk.
She opened her laptop. The London email was still there. March 15. UCL. Three years. Dr. Osei's careful voice saying *it would also simplify some things.*
She thought about him telling Henderson. She thought about the specific courage of that — of going to Henderson before Henderson came to him, of saying *the methodology collaboration has also been a personal relationship* without being asked, without being required, because transparency was the correct approach and he had chosen to be correct rather than to manage. He had done the harder thing.
She was sitting here not doing the harder thing.
She was sitting here with a London email and a wound and a logic that said *I can protect him from the complications I'm causing* — which was not what he had asked for, which he had not asked for, which was the kind of protection that required the person being protected to not know it was happening.
She thought: he told me the door was closed from the inside.
She thought: I am looking at a door.
She thought: I am not going to open it without talking to him.
But she also did not text him. Not yet. She sat with the conflict between knowing and doing and told herself it was because the time wasn't right, because she needed to think, because she wanted to have the full picture before the conversation.
She knew this was partly true.
She also knew that the wound's mechanism was delay — was the gap between knowing you should say something and finding the reason not to say it yet.
His text arrived at nine thirty: *Goodnight.*
She looked at the word. One word. The same register they used — economical, accurate, carrying what it carried without requiring elaboration. The same register she had come to know as his, the same register she had learned to trust completely, the same register that was now, tonight, being met with a *Goodnight* from her that was carrying information it was not carrying.
She typed: *Goodnight.*
She sent it. She closed her laptop. She lay down and looked at the Marchmont flat's ceiling and listened to Edinburgh February outside the window, and thought about how she had told him *the wound knows that too, it just takes longer to catch up with what you know,* and about how she was sitting here waiting for her own knowing to catch up with itself.
She knew what she should do. She knew it clearly. She would do it.
She just had not done it yet.
