Thursday had been useful.
This was the word she kept returning to, with the particular awareness of someone who had chosen a word carefully and was now noticing what the choice revealed. *Useful* was the word she used for things that served a purpose without requiring further classification. The Thursday methodology discussion had been useful in the way that conversations were useful when both people in them were thinking at the same level about the same problem and neither of them was performing. She had left the Ashworth Building at seven-fifteen and walked home through Edinburgh rain that had, for once, not felt like weather so much as atmosphere, and she had not examined the word *useful* until she was already inside her accommodation and making tea and realizing she was still thinking about the last forty minutes of the discussion.
She had filed this under the category that still did not have a name. She had gone to sleep.
Friday had been normal. The weekend had been data and a video call with her mother and a long walk through the Old Town that she had told herself was for the exercise and that had taken her, incidentally, past the Ashworth Building twice. She had been researching the area around Calton Hill on Saturday, which was approximately three blocks from the Ashworth Building, and had found it a very interesting area, architecturally speaking.
Monday was the coffee. She had not thought about the coffee this morning except for the forty minutes she had spent not thinking about it.
Today was Tuesday, and it was lunchtime, and she was eating a sandwich at her desk in the Whitmore lab because she had not yet determined the social geography of the canteen. This was the fifth Tuesday she had eaten lunch at her desk. She was aware of this statistic in the way she was aware of most data points she was not ready to do anything about: precisely, and at a slight distance.
---
This was, she acknowledged, a longer period of determination than strictly necessary. She had been in Edinburgh for seven weeks. Seven weeks was sufficient time to identify the social topography of a canteen. She had done it in three days in every previous institutional context she had inhabited, because she was good at reading rooms and better at reading people and she had learned early that the geography of where people sat told you most of what you needed to know about the institutional culture you were operating in.
She had not done it here because she knew, without having confirmed, that the Ashworth canteen operated on the same invisible divisions she had observed in the hallways and seminars and coffee queues of the building. She knew which tables were Henderson territory and which were Whitmore, and she knew that she sat, by default and by institutional assignment, in Whitmore territory, and she knew that this was not a problem in any practical sense and was not something she needed to navigate around.
She just had not gone to the canteen yet. The real reason, which she had not stated to herself directly, was that she had not decided how to handle the particular configuration of being in the same room as the invisible wall and the person who existed on the other side of it and also, increasingly, on the same side of it as her, which was a topological problem that the canteen made concrete in a way she had been postponing. The canteen required a decision about where she sat and what that communicated and whether she was prepared to navigate the implications, and she had been occupied with other decisions that felt more tractable.
She was eating her sandwich and annotating a paper when Marcus appeared in the doorway, jacket on, clearly heading out.
"Yutong. Canteen? Aiko and I are going."
She looked up. Calculated. The paper was not at a critical point. The sandwich was adequate but not good. She had been meaning to go to the canteen for seven weeks.
She opened her mouth to say something that would have been a polite decline, and through the glass panel of the Whitmore lab she saw Lâm Tư Trạch walking past in the hallway, coffee cup in hand, alone, heading in the direction of the canteen stairs.
He did not look in as he passed.
"Yes," she said. "Give me a moment."
---
The Ashworth canteen occupied the ground floor at the east end of the building, which meant it got the morning light and the afternoon gray, and at this hour it was in the latter. She had been right about the social geography: the tables near the windows on the left side of the room had the Henderson lab concentration, and the tables in the center-right had Whitmore, and the overlap zone in the middle was occupied by researchers from the two adjacent chemistry groups who appeared not to have received the memo about the invisible wall or had received it and chosen not to care.
She saw him immediately when she walked in. Corner table, left side, a paper open on the table in front of him, a sandwich still in its wrapper beside it. He was reading in the way he read when he didn't want to be interrupted — which was the same way he read when he was working, and she had learned to distinguish between the two by the particular quality of the stillness. Right now he was not working. He was occupying a space.
Marcus steered them toward a Whitmore-adjacent table in the center-right, which was the correct choice and which placed her with her back to the left side of the room. She sat down. She arranged her tray. She looked at the people she was sitting with and began the work of constructing a conversational presence.
She did not look at the corner table. She was aware of the corner table in the specific way you were aware of things you were not looking at — as a kind of peripheral gravity, a point in the room that slightly reorganized the space around it. She settled her napkin and was perfectly present in the conversation that was developing around her.
The Whitmore lunch contingent was seven people today — Marcus and Aiko, whom she knew, and four others at various stages of familiarity. Oliver, who was a second-year she had spoken to twice and who had the particular energy of someone who had formed opinions about things before fully understanding them. Two third-years whose names she had filed but not yet attached to sufficient context. A visiting researcher from Manchester who was in Edinburgh for two weeks and who ate with the focused efficiency of someone on a deadline.
The conversation was the conversation of people who worked together and were not, at this moment, required to work: a paper someone had read, a grant deadline, a piece of equipment that had failed in a specific and inconvenient way. She participated enough to be present and listened enough to be useful and ate her sandwich, which was better than the one she'd had at her desk.
The canteen had the particular acoustic quality of a space full of people who were not trying to be quiet — overlapping conversations, the sound of trays, the specific frequency of a room operating at comfortable capacity. It was not, she was noting without intending to note, impossible to hear a conversation at a distance of fifteen feet if you knew what register to listen for.
She was reaching for her water when Oliver said, in the casual tone of someone contributing a neutral observation: "Henderson lab people never really eat with anyone else. Sicheng Lin especially — he's always by himself."
A small pause. The kind that follows a statement that doesn't quite require a response but has weight enough that someone might provide one.
"Taiwanese, you know," Oliver added. "They've got a thing with mainlanders."
He said it as information. As context. As the kind of background detail that explained a behavior pattern in a way that required no further examination. He was not, as far as she could tell, being deliberately unkind. He was being incurious, which was a different category and in some ways worse.
She had encountered this category before. It was the category of people who said things that caused damage without intending to cause damage, which did not make the damage smaller and did make it harder to address, because there was nothing to push back against that would not seem disproportionate to the person being pushed back at. She had developed, over the course of a life that had given her considerable practice, a specific set of responses to this category. Today she did not use any of them.
She ate a bite of her sandwich.
She looked up from her tray, not because she had decided to, but because her eyes had traveled to the corner table before she had issued them any instructions. He was still reading. The sandwich was still in its wrapper. And then — as if the room's acoustics had decided to be inconvenient — he looked up, not toward the center-right cluster but toward the window on the far side of the room, and she saw his face in the particular unguarded configuration it had when he was working through a problem alone, when there was no audience and therefore no performance. The face she had seen at 11pm on a Friday and at 6:47am in a document timestamp and in the specific quality of his stillness when he held the lab door for her without making it into anything.
She thought about the coffee.
She thought about the notebook squared to the corner of the desk.
She thought about *thank you* with no qualifications attached to it.
She thought about the 6:47am timestamp and the note that had been there before she arrived. She thought about the two ideas in the temporal variance draft that had not been his. She thought about the whiteboard bracket that neither of them had erased. She thought about all of this in approximately two seconds, which was why what she said came out steady rather than reactive.
"That's not what it is," she said. Her voice came out at a normal conversational volume, which meant it landed in the small pause that had opened after Oliver's comment. "He's precise. People confuse the two."
The table recalibrated in the specific way tables recalibrated when someone said something that didn't fit the expected register. Not hostile — just a small shift in air pressure, a mutual reassessment.
Oliver looked at her. She met his gaze with the particular steadiness she had developed for exactly this kind of moment: not aggressive, not deferential, simply present and clear. She had said what she had said. It was accurate. She was not retracting it.
"Fair enough," Marcus said, and the conversation moved.
She looked back at the corner table.
He was looking at her.
She did not know when he had started looking. She did not know how much he had heard across the ambient noise of a canteen at lunchtime. What she knew was that his eyes were on her and that she could not read the expression, which was unusual, because she had been getting better at reading his expressions, and this one was something she didn't have a word for yet.
A beat.
He looked back down at his paper.
She looked down at her sandwich.
She ate the rest of her lunch with the focused attention of someone who was absolutely not replaying the last two minutes in real time, and when Marcus suggested they head back she was the first one standing.
---
Aiko fell into step beside her in the hallway without preamble, which was consistent with everything Yutong had observed about Aiko: she did things when she had decided to do them and not before.
"He's not like that," Aiko said. No setup. The kind of statement that assumed the listener knew the context, which Yutong did.
"I know," she said.
"I was cross-registered with Henderson lab for two years." Aiko said it the way she said most things — factual, unembellished. "He doesn't have a thing with mainlanders. He doesn't have a thing with anyone. He just — " she paused in the way Aiko paused, which was with the patience of someone who wanted to be accurate rather than fast " — he decides who's worth his time. And then he's very consistent about that."
They walked. The building's ventilation made its usual sound. Edinburgh rain was audible against the high windows.
"Seems like he's decided," Aiko said. The same tone. The tone of someone reporting a data point.
She turned to say something, but Aiko had already peeled off toward the Henderson lab corridor, moving with the particular efficiency of someone who had completed the task they had set out to do and had no need to extend it.
Yutong stood in the hallway for a moment.
She had been in Edinburgh for seven weeks. In that time she had been assigned a collaboration partner she had not chosen, had retrieved a notebook she had technically left on purpose, had drunk coffee she had not asked for, had worked until midnight in a room she had no professional reason to be in, had heard someone say *thank you* with nothing attached to it, and had said *he's precise* in a canteen full of people who were going to remember she said it.
She did not examine what the sum of these things meant. She had been filing them for seven weeks in a category without a name, and the category was getting full, and she was going to have to name it soon, or the filing system was going to stop working.
She was good at filing. She was good at categorizing. She was good at maintaining functional distance from things she had decided to maintain distance from. She had built these skills over a long time for reasons that still made sense when she examined them, which she was doing less often than she used to.
She went back to the Whitmore lab.
---
The shared document was open on her laptop where she had left it. She scrolled to the bottom to add the note she had been composing in her head on the walk back — a methodology point that had occurred to her during the Thursday discussion and that she had not yet written down.
There was already a new entry.
Timestamp: 12:47pm. Which was approximately the time she had been sitting in the canteen saying *he's precise* in a room where the acoustics were apparently sufficient for a person at a corner table to hear a conversation happening at the center-right cluster.
The entry was at the bottom of the document, between two methodology notes, in the place he always put things he wanted her to find:
*The Thursday discussion was useful. Same time next week?*
She read it.
She read it again.
She thought about 12:47pm. She thought about him at the corner table, sandwich still in its wrapper, looking at the window with the expression she had seen and had not been able to name. She thought about the fact that he had written this note while sitting alone in the canteen, at 12:47pm, which was — she checked her phone — twenty-three minutes before she had returned to the lab.
He had written it before she defended him. He had written it and then she had come in and seen him and said what she said and their eyes had met across the room and he had looked back down at his paper.
She sat with this sequencing for a moment.
Then she placed her cursor in the document, below his line, and typed:
*Same time.*
She did not add anything else. She saved the document. She opened her data file.
Outside the window, Edinburgh was doing what Edinburgh did: rain, gray sky, the castle just visible through the low cloud, the particular quality of afternoon light in a northern October city that had been making her think, for seven weeks, that this was the most beautiful weather she had ever found oppressive.
She worked for four minutes before she noticed that she was smiling.
It was a small smile — the kind that happened before you decided whether to have it. The kind that arrived ahead of the decision and presented itself as a fait accompli, which was either very efficient or very inconvenient depending on your current framework for what you were and were not doing.
She did not stop smiling. She kept working. She added the methodology note she had been composing. She responded to an email from Dr. Osei. She made tea.
The document sat open in its tab, with two lines at the bottom that were not quite about methodology, and the timestamp at 12:47pm, and Edinburgh going on outside the window the way it always did — committed to its weather, consistent in its rain, smaller than people expected and precisely the size it needed to be.
She thought: *same time next week* was seven days away.
She thought: seven days was a manageable interval.
She thought: she was going to have to name the category soon. Outside, Edinburgh kept raining. *Same time* sat in the shared document, waiting for next week, which was going to arrive regardless of whether she was ready for it or not. She found, somewhat to her own surprise, that she was not particularly concerned about being ready. The category would name itself when it was ready. She had always been better at observing than forcing, better at waiting for the data to resolve than at imposing a conclusion before it had earned one.
She drank her tea. She worked. The smile had not entirely gone away.
