The official notification arrived on a Thursday.
Ethan knew about it before Clara did — not because he had any special access to academy records, but because he had been watching her channel structure through the Absolute Perception for two weeks and had seen the changes accumulating with the patient inevitability of a process that had been set in motion and was going to complete itself regardless of whether anyone was paying attention.
The channels had widened. Not dramatically — the kind of change that standard mana assessment equipment would measure as a significant shift but that looked, to the naked eye and in the day-to-day conduct of training, like simple improvement. But through the Perception he could see it precisely: the main Lightning channel three percent wider than it had been in the first session, the secondary path they had opened in the branching work running clean and clear without the roughness of a newly formed route. The pressure that had been building against the channel walls for years — the thing that had been producing the bạo phát, the uncontrolled releases, the fractures in training pillars — had found somewhere to go.
The mana had exhaled.
So when the notification appeared on her door — a small official envelope with the Celestia seal, the kind that contained rank reassessments — he was not surprised. He was present when she found it, because they had developed, over the past two weeks, a habit of meeting briefly in the east corridor after the morning session before separating toward their respective first lectures. Not by arrangement. Simply by the accumulated inertia of doing something enough times that it became what happened.
She came around the corner with her bag over one shoulder and the envelope in her other hand, turning it over once. She had already opened it. The paper was visible, folded back.
"Silver-Rank," she said, when she reached him. She handed him the paper.
He read it. Official language, academy letterhead, the results of a reassessment that had been triggered by her recent test scores and the observations of multiple faculty members. Effective immediately. Silver-Rank, Lightning Affinity, Celestia Magic Academy, year three.
He handed it back.
"Congratulations," he said.
She looked at the paper for a moment, then folded it and tucked it into her bag. Her expression was doing the complicated thing it did when she was processing something that had weight — not the simple pleasure of achievement, which he had observed was not actually how she experienced achievement, but something more layered. The satisfaction of a thing completed, yes. And underneath it, the awareness of what came next, the way one milestone immediately became the foundation for the next requirement.
And underneath that, something quieter. Something that she did not put into words, but that he thought was connected to the paper being something she had brought to show him before she had done anything else with it.
"The nut thắt in the left channel," she said. "Is it resolved?"
"Substantially. There is still some residual tension but it is no longer structural."
She nodded. "Then the work is progressing correctly."
"Yes."
A pause.
"Tomorrow," she said, and turned toward her lecture.
He watched her go and thought about the paper in her bag and the fact that she had come around the corner already holding it, which meant she had found it and then come directly here, which meant that here was where she had wanted to be when she processed the information. He thought about what that meant, carefully, in the way he had been thinking about things carefully for the past two weeks — attending to them fully while maintaining a specific kind of distance, the way you could look at something very bright without looking directly at it.
Then he went to his own lecture.
---
The second Resonance feedback arrived that afternoon.
He had expected it — the Silver-Rank reassessment was a formal milestone, the kind of measurable advancement that the Heart's mechanism responded to, and he had been feeling the buildup for three days, the relic warming in increments with the specific quality that preceded activation. He had chosen the time and place with some care: his dormitory room, alone, with the afternoon free of lectures and the door closed.
He sat on the floor against the bed and waited for it.
The waiting lasted approximately four minutes. Then it arrived.
The first feedback had been overwhelming because he had not known what to expect — the sudden surge, the door opening onto a large space, the need to put one knee on the ground to stay upright. This time he knew the shape of it, and knowing the shape did not reduce the magnitude but changed his relationship to it. He breathed through it the way Clara breathed through the anchor sequence — not controlling, not resisting, creating the conditions and stepping back.
The mana settled in waves, each one deeper than the last, filling channels that had expanded since the first feedback to accommodate more. He could feel the texture of it — the specific density of Vance mana, thicker than standard, with a quality of depth to it that normal mana did not have, like the difference between water and something older and heavier that moved with a different kind of authority.
And then, at the end of the last wave, something new.
The Absolute Perception shifted.
It had been operating, since its emergence after the first feedback, as a close-range sense — accurate and detailed within a radius of perhaps five meters, requiring deliberate attention to activate. What changed now was the range and the quality of the activation. The radius expanded, suddenly and without incremental warning, past the walls of his room and into the corridor beyond, past the corridor and into the adjacent rooms, spreading outward in a sphere of awareness that mapped mana signatures the way a flood mapped terrain — every surface and space and living being rendered in the specific language of their energy.
He could feel the whole dormitory floor.
Not see it — feel it, in the way you felt a room when you walked into it in the dark, a comprehensive impression that carried information without requiring visual processing. Twelve students in their rooms, each one a distinct signature. The building's own ward structure, layered and old, running through the walls like slow rivers. The ambient mana of the stone itself, geological and ancient, so deep and slow it was barely distinguishable from absence.
He sat very still and let the Perception run without directing it, learning its new shape.
After several minutes he drew it back — not suppressing it, just returning it to close-range operation, the way you lowered your voice in a library. The expanded range was available. He simply did not need it at the moment, and using it continuously would have been like walking around with all the lights on all the time: possible, but wasteful, and ultimately disorienting.
He sat on the floor and looked at his hands.
The mana under his skin was noticeably different from two weeks ago. Denser still. More responsive — he had noticed this in the past few days, the way it moved when he needed it without the deliberate engagement that had been required before. As though the feedback was not only adding to his reserve but refining the connection between his intention and its response.
He thought about what this meant, practically.
Then he thought about what it meant in a different sense — the sense that each increment of power was a direct consequence of Clara's progress, which was a direct consequence of their sessions, which would not have existed if he had not sat down in the Archive two weeks ago and said too much. The chain of causation ran from that moment to this one with no gaps.
He had not, in any of those moments, been thinking about the power.
The relic was making a point that he found increasingly difficult to set aside.
---
The following morning in the clearing, he told her about the Perception.
Not because he had planned to. Because she asked.
She had arrived at the usual time, started the warm-up sequence, and was three minutes into it when she paused and turned to look at him with the direct expression she used when she had decided that directness was appropriate.
"You have been watching my channel structure," she said. It was not a question.
"Yes."
"In detail. More detail than standard mana sensing would allow."
"Yes."
"F-Rank students do not have detailed mana perception."
"No," he said. "They do not."
She looked at him for a moment. "Are you going to tell me what you actually are, or are we going to continue the current arrangement indefinitely?"
He had been thinking about this question for two weeks — specifically, about the version of it she would eventually ask and what his answer would be when she did. He had not arrived at a complete answer. But he had arrived at enough of one.
"Not today," he said. "Not because I am not going to. Because what I am is — complicated, and telling it correctly requires more than a morning before training."
She absorbed this. He watched her calibrate — weighing the answer, deciding whether it was sufficient, determining what it implied about trust and timeline.
"But you will," she said.
"Yes."
"On your timeline."
"On a timeline we agree on. You can tell me when you need to know."
This produced a silence that was different from their usual silences — more charged, carrying the weight of the implicit acknowledgment that there was a when, that the question was not if but when, that they had both moved past the version of this where the answer might be never.
"I need to know," she said, "before the Mock Battle tournament. That is in three weeks."
"Before the Mock Battle," he said. "Yes."
She held his gaze for a moment longer, and in that moment the questions she was not yet asking were entirely visible to him — not through the Perception but simply through the quality of her attention, which was one of the most precise instruments he had ever encountered. Then she nodded, once, and turned back to the warm-up sequence.
"The Absolute Perception," he said, before she had gone three steps. "That is what it is called. It allows me to observe mana structures directly — channels, flow, density, blockages. I have had it for two weeks. It arrived as a consequence of something I cannot fully explain yet, but I will explain it when I explain the rest."
She did not stop walking. But her pace slowed, almost imperceptibly, for two steps before returning to its usual rhythm.
"Absolute Perception," she said, half to herself, turning the name over like someone checking the weight of a new object. "That is why your technical guidance has been so specific."
"Yes."
"And the nut thắt in my left channel — you identified that in the second session."
"First session. I did not mention it until the second because I wanted to confirm what I was seeing."
Another pause. They were both standing still now, in the morning light, the warm-up sequence set aside.
"You have been seeing my mana structure clearly since the first session," she said, slowly, "and you have been using what you saw to design every instruction you have given me."
"Yes."
Something moved through her expression — something that was not the recalibration look and not the unguarded look and not the composed public version. Something that was all three of those and something additional, a quality that he did not have a name for and that lasted only a moment before she looked away and back at the center of the clearing.
"That explains quite a lot," she said quietly.
He thought she was going to leave it there — to file the information the way she filed things, to return to training, to let the moment close. But she did not. She stood for another few seconds in the morning light with the expression he did not have a name for, and then she said, without looking at him:
"Thank you."
Not the first genuine thank you — that had been after the branching infusion breakthrough. This one was different. That one had been for a result. This one was for something else. For the two weeks of sessions designed around what he had seen and had not said he was seeing. For the knot in the channel that he had known about since the first morning and had addressed quietly and without making it a production. For whatever she understood, in this moment, about the care that had gone into it.
Ethan stood in the clearing and felt the warmth of the Resonance Heart against his sternum and thought: she was thanking him for caring about her. Not for the results. For the caring.
He thought about the old man's voice. *The relic is not interested in transactions.*
"You are welcome," he said.
She turned and began the warm-up sequence again.
He watched her move through it — the precise footwork, the weight distribution, the mana already settling into the anchor state with the ease of something habitual — and felt the specific complicated warmth of a person who has been seen in the act of caring and has not managed to feel entirely terrible about it.
The Resonance Heart was very warm.
He let it be warm, and he let the morning be what it was, and for the first time in two weeks he did not inventory the reasons why this was a problem.
He simply stood in the clearing and let the fact of it exist, uncomplicated, in the early light.
