The corridor outside the main assessment yard had the quality of a space that had recently held something significant and had not yet returned to its ordinary function.
Ethan walked through it beside Clara, and he was aware of the attention the way he had been aware of it on the stage — not as a threat to be managed but as a fact to be received. Students moved around them in the post-match dispersal, and some of them moved out of the way with the automatic deference given to people who had just done something notable, which was a category he had not previously occupied, and some of them looked with the direct quality of people trying to reconcile what they had seen with what they thought they knew, which was a recalibration he was going to be observing in many people over the coming weeks.
He kept walking.
Mereth appeared at the corridor junction where the main yard exit met the path to the faculty offices — not waiting, exactly, but positioned with the deliberateness of someone who had anticipated the route.
"Vance," she said. Not Lady Sterling this time. Not F-Rank Vance. Just Vance, the way people said names when they were figuring out what to call someone and had not decided yet.
"Instructor Mereth," he said.
"I would like to speak with you this afternoon. After the lunch period." A pause. "My office, if that is convenient."
"It is convenient," he said.
She nodded and moved on. He continued walking.
Beside him, Clara said nothing. She had been beside him since the stage, in the specific proximity they now occupied, and she was watching the corridor with the attentive quality she brought to situations that were developing faster than they could be fully assessed.
"Mereth," she said, when they were past the junction.
"Yes."
"She observed the entire match from the front row." Clara was quiet for a moment. "She will have questions about things that do not have simple answers."
"Yes," he said. "I know."
"Do you want company for the meeting?"
He had been walking, and this question stopped the walking for a moment — not literally, he kept his pace, but something in him paused, the specific pause that happened when an unexpected thing arrived and required proper reception. He had not been expecting the offer. He had been, in the back of his mind, already beginning to organize how he would navigate the Mereth conversation alone, which was the habit — the carrying alone, the managing alone, the going into difficult rooms without telling anyone where he was going because not telling anyone was the version of safe he had been practicing for three years.
He heard what the habit was doing.
"Yes," he said.
The word came out without the delay he would have expected, which told him something about how much the decision had already been made before the question arrived.
Clara's expression did not change — she received it the same way she received most things, with the quiet acknowledgment that did not perform surprise or satisfaction, simply noted the arrival of information. But something in the quality of her attention shifted, the slight warmth of it that he had learned to register even when her expression was neutral.
"After lunch, then," she said.
---
The dining hall at the midday meal had the specific quality of a space in which the same event is being discussed by many groups simultaneously. He could hear fragments of it from several tables as he and Clara made their way to their corner — the F-Rank student, the Convergence, the match against Crane, the questions about what the demonstration implied about the rank system and about who exactly Ethan Vance was and had always been.
He took his usual seat. Clara took hers. The table was the same table.
What was different was the quality of being seen at it.
For three years he had eaten in this hall with the unremarkable invisibility of an F-Rank student — present, technically, but not in any way that registered as worth noting. The attention that moved through the hall now was not hostile. Most of it was simply curious, the genuine curiosity of people who had witnessed something they had not understood and were still working toward understanding. But it was attention, and attention was something he had been specifically structured to avoid, and he was sitting with the fact that the structure was no longer the right one and the fact had not finished arriving.
"It will be like this for a while," Clara said, without particular concern.
"I know."
"It will change. Things that are novel become ordinary with sufficient time."
"How long did it take," he said, "when you arrived at Celestia? As someone notable."
She considered this. "Three weeks before I was simply part of the landscape. Two weeks before the specific attention became general rather than focused." A pause. "You have the additional variable of the rank discrepancy, which is more unusual than being from a notable family. It may take longer."
"Three to four weeks," he said.
"Probably."
"That is manageable."
"Yes," she said. "It is."
They ate. The hall moved around them with its Thursday lunch rhythm. At some point a second-year student Ethan did not know made brief eye contact with him and then looked away quickly, the way students sometimes looked away from faculty when they were caught staring. He filed this as data and continued eating.
"The rank reassessment," Clara said, at some point in the middle of the meal. "Mereth will bring it up."
"I expect so."
"What do you want to say?"
He thought about this. "That I will consider it. Which is true — I have not decided."
She looked at him with the level quality of her attention. "What is the consideration?"
"The rank system is a useful framework for some things and an inaccurate one for others. Reassessment would produce a number. The number would change how certain people interact with me and would not change what I am actually capable of." He paused. "I am not opposed to the reassessment. I am uncertain what function it serves at this specific point, beyond confirming what was already demonstrated."
Clara was quiet for a moment. "It would serve the function of making your position legible to people who use the system to organize their understanding of the world. Which is most people."
"Yes. That is a legitimate function."
"Then consider it on those grounds. Not on the grounds of what you are, which is already established. On the grounds of what makes navigating the world easier."
He thought about this framing and found it more useful than the one he had been using. "Yes. That is the right question."
She returned to her meal with the quiet satisfaction of someone who has said what was needed and does not require acknowledgment of the saying.
---
Mereth's office was small and precise, which was consistent with everything else about her. Two chairs across from each other, a desk with organized stacks of student observation notes, the narrow shelf of texts Clara had identified on her first visit to a faculty consultation room. The window looked out on the east practice yard, which was quiet at this hour.
Mereth asked questions with the methodical directness Ethan had come to associate with her — no preamble, no social scaffolding, just the question and the expectation of an honest answer.
He gave honest answers. Not complete ones — the Resonance Heart and the specific family history were not things he was prepared to introduce into an official faculty conversation without understanding the full implications — but honest ones about the level of his actual capability, about the source of his theoretical knowledge, about why he had been performing below that capability for three years. He said: family security. He said: I had reasons to be careful. He said: the reasons have changed.
Mereth listened without expression. This was one of her qualities he found useful — she absorbed information without layering her response onto it in real time, which gave him a cleaner read of what she was actually thinking when she did respond.
Beside him, Clara said almost nothing. She was there, which was what he had asked for, and her presence had the quality it always had — not intrusive, not passive, simply present with the full quality of her attention available to the room.
At the end of the meeting Mereth said: "The rank assessment I mentioned is not mandatory. But the performance you demonstrated today is not consistent with any classification below Gold-Rank. The administrative record will note the discrepancy with or without a formal reassessment, because the tournament record is permanent." A pause. "I suggest you consider what you want the official record to say."
"I will consider it," he said.
"And — Vance." She looked at him with the specific quality of someone choosing their next words carefully. "Whatever the reasons were for the past three years: you have been here, and you have been working, and the work is evident. The reasons are yours to explain or not explain as you choose. But the work is in the record."
He received this with the specific quality of receiving something unexpected that was also accurate.
"Thank you," he said.
They left the office. The corridor was quiet in the late afternoon. Clara walked beside him with her hands loose at her sides, her bag over one shoulder, the Focus Amulet catching the light at her collarbone.
"The work is in the record," she said.
"Yes."
"She is not wrong."
"No," he said. "She is not."
They walked the east corridor together toward the junction where their routes would diverge, and he thought about records and what went into them and what they meant and about the specific quality of three years of invisible work that had not been invisible to anyone who had actually been paying attention.
At the junction she turned toward the north tower and he turned toward the east dormitory, and she said, without particular inflection, over her shoulder: "The clearing, tomorrow morning."
"Six o'clock," he said.
She walked on.
He stood at the junction for a moment in the late afternoon light and thought: the reasons have changed, and the record is the record, and tomorrow is six o'clock.
All three of those things were true, and all three were manageable, and he walked back toward the dormitory in the quiet of the late afternoon with the Resonance Heart warm against his chest and the specific uncomplicated feeling of someone who has arrived, after a long walk, somewhere they intended to go.
