The academy's celebration was not a formal event.
Celestia hosted formal events with precision — the end-of-year ceremonies, the Grand Tournament opening, the faculty recognition dinners that required specific dress and specific attendance and produced the specific quality of an occasion that everyone present was conscious of being present at. The post-Mock Battle celebration was not that. It was the academy's informal version of acknowledgment: a week after the tournament, on a Friday evening, the groundskeeping staff set up a small display of mana-powered fireworks in the central courtyard, the kitchen provided festival food in the dining hall, and the student body was left to find its own relationship with the occasion.
Most students found their relationship with it in groups on the observation balconies or clustered in the courtyard with clear sightlines to the display. This was normal. Ethan had not attended a previous iteration of this event, which was also normal — the F-Rank student in the back row did not generally feature in the social mapping of Friday evening celebrations.
He was in the library bell tower because it had a clear view of the courtyard below and was empty on Friday evenings when the library itself was technically open but almost universally unoccupied. He had discovered this in his first year and had returned to it occasionally since — the specific quality of a high space with a wide view and no other people in it, which was a combination he found restorative in a way he had not fully examined.
He was reading, which was what he did in spaces like this, with the window open onto the November evening and the Mana Zone extending into the cold air around him and registering the warmth and noise of the courtyard gathering four floors below.
He felt her on the stairs eleven minutes before the display was scheduled to begin.
Not because he had been watching for her — he had been reading, and she had entered the Zone's range from the stairwell beneath him, the familiar Lightning signature ascending through the floors of the library tower with the unhurried pace of someone who knew where they were going. He set his book down and did not look at the stairwell door, because there was no reason to look at it when the Zone told him everything the looking would tell him and more besides.
The door opened.
Clara came through it with a coat she had clearly added for the evening cold and nothing else — no books, no bag, nothing that suggested she had come to the tower for any purpose that required equipment. She looked at him sitting in the window with his book and then looked at the view from the window — the courtyard below, the setup for the display, the gathered academy.
"You found this in your first year," she said.
"Yes."
"You have been coming here on celebration evenings since."
"Yes."
"Alone."
"Until now," he said.
She crossed the tower room and stood at the other side of the window — not beside him, across from him, the window frame between them. She looked at the courtyard for a moment and then at him with the expression that did not have the management layer.
"I looked for you in the dining hall," she said. "Then the east corridor. Then the library, which was the obvious place, but the main room was empty. The archivist told me the bell tower was sometimes occupied on evenings like this."
"Pressa," he said.
"She said — and I am quoting directly — that the F-Rank student from the back corner had been using the bell tower for three years and she did not see why the recent change in academic status should alter that." Clara paused. "She also said you always returned the books in better condition than you found them and that this distinguished you from the majority of the student body."
He felt something in his expression move that he did not manage. "She has never said anything of the sort to me."
"She said it to me," Clara said, with the particular quality of delivering information that was both accurate and slightly unreasonable to have received. "I think she wanted me to know."
Below them the courtyard was filling, the November evening crisp and clear, the gathered students visible in the mana-light of the courtyard lamps. The display was set up at the western end — a series of mana conduits arranged on a low platform, the kind of setup that produced light and movement rather than sound, the academy's quiet version of celebration.
Clara moved from across the window to beside it — the same side he was on, standing at the window frame where the view was best. Not quite the distance they occupied now; slightly farther, the natural distance of standing together at a window rather than the inhabited distance of their specific proximity.
He did not adjust it.
Neither did she.
"Six weeks to the Grand Tournament," she said, looking at the courtyard.
"Five and a half."
"Five and a half." She was quiet for a moment. "A great deal has happened in the past seven weeks."
"Yes."
"Some of it is going to continue happening in ways we cannot predict. Julian's father. The tournament. The rank assessment. The letter I have not yet received back from my own father, which will arrive and will require navigation." She turned from the courtyard to look at him directly. "I have been thinking about this. About the number of things that are in motion and the number of them that are uncertain."
"Yes," he said. "So have I."
"There is a specific thing I want to say before the uncertain things arrive," she said. "Not because I will not be able to say it after — I will be able to say it after. But because I want to say it now, while we are here, before the display starts and the evening becomes something else."
Below, the display began — the first burst of mana-light rising from the western platform into the November sky, expanding into a sphere of blue-white that scattered and resolved into smaller points that hung in the air for a moment before fading. The crowd in the courtyard made the sound that crowds made when something was beautiful.
Clara did not look at the display.
She was looking at him.
"I do not know," she said, with the careful precision she brought to important statements, "what form the next several months will take. I do not know what the tournament produces or what Julian's father does or how my own family responds to the decisions I have been making." A pause. "What I know is what I want. Which I have been learning, over the past seven weeks, to treat as a meaningful category rather than a distraction from the categories that were supposed to matter." Another pause. "What I want, specifically, is this — whatever this is. You. The clearing. The work we have done and the work that is still to be done. The Archive on a Tuesday morning and the third table from the window and the festival and the east garden and—" She stopped. Started again. "I want you to be present for whatever comes next. Not because you are useful. Because this — what we have built — is the specific thing I do not want to navigate without."
The display continued behind her — another burst, golden this time, spreading and fragmenting into light — and she stood in the window of the library bell tower and said the truest thing she had said in seven weeks of true things, and he received it the way he had learned to receive things from her: without deflecting, without qualifying, with the full weight of his attention.
He reached out.
Not reaching for something — reaching toward her, the small deliberate movement of someone closing a distance they have been aware of for a long time and are choosing, now, to close. His hand found her shoulder and he drew her in, the way you drew something toward you when you had decided it was where it belonged, and she came without resistance, the way she had always come to things she had already decided on.
They stood in the window of the bell tower with the fireworks continuing below and his arm around her shoulders and her head against the side of his jaw, and the display painted the November sky in sequences of blue and gold and white, and the crowd in the courtyard made its sounds of appreciation, and none of it was what either of them was primarily aware of.
What he was primarily aware of was the specific quality of Clara Sterling at rest — the way the composure she wore everywhere else was not present here, not because it had been put down deliberately but because there was nowhere it needed to be, the way a hand unclenched when there was nothing left to hold. She was simply there, in the way people were simply there when they had arrived at a place they had been moving toward and had stopped moving.
The Mana Zone registered her with the specific intimacy of proximity — the Lightning mana signature that was more familiar than anything else in his awareness, present now at a distance that had never been this short, the frequency of it a constant in his perception that he had stopped noticing the way he had stopped noticing his own heartbeat.
The display ran for twenty minutes.
Neither of them moved.
When the last burst faded and the courtyard below began its dispersal, the crowd finding the warm interiors of the academy's buildings, the evening returning to the ordinary sounds of a November Friday, Clara straightened. She did not move away. She lifted her head from his jaw and looked at the emptying courtyard and then at him, with the expression that was not the composure and not the unguarded but the third thing — both and neither, the version that was simply her.
"Are you going to be there?" she said. Quietly, in the way of someone asking a question they know the answer to and asking it anyway because the answer matters to hear.
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze for a moment. Then she turned toward the stairwell door with the unhurried movement of someone who has accomplished what they came to accomplish and is ready to move on to whatever comes after.
At the door she paused. The pause she made when she was going to look back, the specific quality of it that he had learned to recognize as different from a simple stop.
She looked back.
"Breakfast tomorrow," she said. "The dining hall at seven."
"Seven," he said.
She nodded, once, and went through the door.
He stood in the bell tower with the empty courtyard below and the November sky and the Mana Zone registering her descent through the floors of the library tower, familiar and specific, forty seconds of awareness as she moved through the Zone and out of it and away.
He stayed in the window after the Zone released her.
The Resonance Heart was warm in a way it had been warm for the better part of seven weeks now — not the warmth of anticipation or the warmth of activation but the warmth of something that had arrived at what it was and had settled into the having of it. Steady, patient, the warmth of a thing that did not need to become anything more than it was.
He looked at the cleared November sky over the courtyard.
He thought about a fracture twelve feet up a training pillar, and a corridor he had not continued walking down, and a clearing in the forest that had accumulated significance the way the old man had said places accumulated significance, and everything that had happened in the seven weeks since the first morning when he had arrived at the clearing before she did and had not known, yet, what he was arriving early for.
He knew now.
He picked up his book and the lamp he had brought and went down the stairs and out into the November evening, and the academy was quiet around him in the way it was quiet after celebrations when the day had completed itself, and he walked back toward the dormitory with the cold air and the specific warmth of the Heart and the absolute knowledge of what the next seven weeks were going to ask of him and what he was going to bring to the asking.
All of it.
He was going to bring all of it.
