The practical training announcement appeared on a Monday.
Ethan read it on his way back from the morning session, folding it into the ongoing calculation of variables that had become the background work of his days since Seren Aldric had sat down across from him in the dining hall. Two days in Shadow Woods. All final-year students. Supervised by faculty from the combat training division. Departure Thursday, return Saturday.
He kept walking and thought about what two days in Shadow Woods meant in terms of the specific threats he was currently managing. No academy perimeter. No fixed location where the Mana Zone could establish a baseline. Faculty he had not fully cleared, moving through terrain he had not mapped. Variable mana environment that would interact with the Zone in ways he could not predict without being in it.
He was still thinking about it when Clara appeared beside him at the east corridor junction.
"We are in the same group," she said.
He looked at her. "The assignments were not posted yet when I read the announcement."
"They were posted to the faculty coordination system this morning. I spoke with the group coordinator before the announcement went to general posting." She kept walking, which meant he kept walking. "I explained that we had been training as a unit and that separation would reduce the practical value of the exercise for both of us. The coordinator agreed that unit coherence was a legitimate factor in group assignment."
He was quiet for a moment.
"You spoke with the coordinator before I knew about the exercise," he said.
"Yes."
"Before I had the opportunity to consider whether I wanted to be in your group."
"Yes." A pause. "Did you not want to be in my group?"
He thought about Shadow Woods and the variable environment and the Mana Zone limitations and the specific comfort of having the most familiar mana signature he knew within the Zone's radius at all times.
"No," he said. "I did."
"Then the outcome is correct and the process is irrelevant," she said, with the particular logic she deployed when the conclusion was sound and she was not particularly interested in debating the methodology.
He thought: this is what it looks like when someone acts before you know you need them to.
He filed it and walked beside her toward the library.
---
The two days before departure they spent in the Archive with Seren Aldric's leather case.
The documentation was thorough in the way of people who had been doing careful work over a long period. Names, some of them — most redacted or indicated by position rather than identity, but enough of the structure visible that the organization's shape was discernible. They operated through institutional channels when possible, which was why the pattern was difficult to isolate: a legitimate inquiry here, a record access there, connections maintained through layers of intermediary that made direct attribution difficult. They were patient. They had been patient for two generations.
The timeline entry that mattered most was also the most recent: a notation dated eight days ago indicating that tournament records from Celestia Magic Academy had been obtained and were under analysis. The notation was vague — who had obtained them, through what channel, was not specified. But eight days ago was the day after the Mock Battle final.
Ethan read it twice and showed it to Clara.
"They moved fast," she said.
"They have been looking for a long time," he said. "When the right signal appeared they were already positioned to act on it."
"Three to five weeks was Seren's estimate."
"That was before we knew they had the tournament records eight days ago." He looked at the notation. "It may be shorter."
Clara was quiet for a moment, the working silence. Then: "Does this change anything about Shadow Woods?"
He thought about it carefully. "It changes the priority. Before, Shadow Woods was a training exercise with an adjacent security consideration. Now the security consideration is primary." He paused. "They may not move during Shadow Woods — the location is not convenient for them and we will be in a supervised group. But I want to know who is supervising."
"I can find out through official channels without it being unusual. I am in the advanced program now — requesting faculty information for a practical exercise preparation is normal."
"Yes," he said. "That would be useful."
She wrote it on her notes as a task and continued reading.

Thursday departure: the student group assembled at the academy's south gate at seven in the morning, which was earlier than any of them except Ethan and possibly Clara would have preferred. Twenty-three students in total, three faculty members from the combat training division.
Ethan ran the Zone at full extension the moment the group assembled, which gave him a radius that covered most of the assembly area. He read each faculty signature with the specific attention he brought to threat assessment, cross-referencing what he could sense against the pattern documentation from Aldric's case.
All three faculty cleared.
Not definitively — the case's pattern descriptions were functional rather than specific, and clearing someone from a pattern description was not the same as clearing them from the actual threat. But the gross signatures were wrong for what the documentation described, and the ambient quality of their mana suggested long academy employment rather than the specific quality that came from operating under sustained institutional pressure. He would continue monitoring, but his initial read was not alarmed.
The journey to Shadow Woods took two hours by academy transport — a group movement through the city and along the southern road to where the forest began. The boundary between the ordinary forest and Shadow Woods was visible as a change in light quality and mana density: the ambient field thickened noticeably at the tree line, the specific layered quality of a forest that had been accumulating magical energy for centuries without significant disturbance.
Ethan felt the Zone adjust when they entered.
The dense ambient mana of Shadow Woods interacted with the Zone in a way he had not fully anticipated — not blocking it, but filling it with data that required more active processing to sort. The ordinary ambient awareness of the Zone, which he had been running at background level for two weeks, became something that required more attention in this environment. Not overwhelming. But present.
Clara was walking beside him when they entered the tree line, and she glanced at him with the specific quality of noticing something change.
"The Zone," she said, quietly enough that only he could hear.
"Adjusting," he said. "More data. I will calibrate."
She nodded and continued walking, which was the response that trusted him to manage it and did not require further comment. He appreciated this about her: the specific economy of her trust, the way it expressed itself as space rather than oversight.
The forest closed around the group. Shadow Woods had a quality he had not encountered before — not hostile, not welcoming, but inhabited in the specific sense of a place that had its own concerns and had been having them for longer than any of the people currently walking through it had been alive. The trees were old in the way the oak in the clearing was old, but more so and more densely, the canopy closing the sky to a shifting filter of light that came through in patterns rather than directly.
The ambient mana moved like weather.
He walked through it and the Zone read it continuously, and by the time the group reached the designated camp site two hours into the forest, he had the basic mapping of the local mana environment: the quái thú signatures at various distances and movement patterns, the specific density gradients that would affect combat technique range, the locations where the ambient field had the particular quality of being near a mana conduit — a natural channel in the earth that carried elemental energy the way rivers carried water.
Useful information. He filed it.
---
The camp site was a clearing larger than his clearing, chosen for defensibility and sight lines by faculty who had been here before. The group set up with the efficiency of students who had been drilled in basic field camp procedure, and by early evening there were tents arranged in the pattern the exercise required and a small mana-fire burning at the center for the cooking and warmth that the November forest night would need.
Ethan and Clara had tents adjacent to each other, which was the arrangement the group coordinator had designated without apparent thought — they had been paired in the Mock Battle, they were in the same unit, adjacent placement was efficient. Nobody in the group appeared to find this notable, which was its own kind of information about how they had been perceived since the tournament.
After the evening meal, the group settled into the social configuration of people in an unfamiliar environment finding their comfort levels. Some built the shared camp conversation that came naturally to groups. Some retreated to their tents early. The faculty maintained their positions at the camp perimeter with the watchful ease of people who had done this many times.
Ethan sat at the camp's edge with his back to a tree and the Zone at full extension, reading the forest.
The quái thú signatures at the perimeter were ordinary for Shadow Woods — Shadow Wolves at varying distances, a few larger presences further out that he categorized as probably not a current threat and flagged for continued monitoring. The forest mana moved in its slow patterns, the long cycles of a living system doing what living systems did regardless of who was passing through.
Nothing alarmed. He maintained the watch anyway.
He was still there when the camp had gone fully quiet — tents closed, faculty in their rotation, the mana-fire burned down to embers — when the space beside him was occupied.
He had felt her approach at the edge of the Zone's range: the Lightning signature, familiar as his own name, moving from her tent toward his position with the unhurried pace of someone who was not sneaking and was not in a hurry. She sat down beside him against the tree with the specific quality of someone who has found where they intended to be.
She did not say anything.
He did not say anything.
The forest was quiet in the specific way of deep night in a living place — not silent, but the sounds that were present belonged there: wind in the canopy, the movement of something small through the undergrowth, the occasional distant sound of a creature too far away to be a concern. The Zone read it all continuously, patient and comprehensive.
Clara was asleep against his shoulder sometime before the hour changed.
He was aware of this with the ambient certainty of the Zone — the specific signature settling into the slower frequency of sleep, the Lightning mana that was always the most recognizable thing in his awareness taking on the quality it had when the person it belonged to was resting. He did not move. There was no reason to move. He continued the watch, which was what needed to be done, and she continued to rest, which was what she needed to do, and the forest moved through its long cycles around them.
Near dawn, when the light was just beginning to shift, she woke.
She did not start or displace — she simply returned to wakefulness in the organized way she did most things, transitioning from sleep to alert within a few seconds. She did not move away immediately. She looked at the forest for a moment, then at him, with the expression that was neither the composure nor the unguarded but the third thing.
"You watched all night," she said.
"The camp needed monitoring," he said.
"Yes," she said. "But you also did not need to be the one monitoring it all night."
"The Zone gives me the most comprehensive read of the local environment," he said. "It was the logical assignment."
She looked at him for a moment with the expression she wore when she was deciding whether to pursue a point or let it stand. She let it stand.
They watched the forest come into its grey-green dawn, and somewhere in the camp someone else began to stir, and the day's second half began the way second halves began — with everything that needed to happen still ahead and the specific quality of people who had made it through the night and were ready for whatever came next.
