They heard the camp before they saw it.
Not the ordinary sounds of twenty-three students and three faculty going about an afternoon exercise — the specific sounds of a situation that had departed from ordinary. Shouting, the kind with a direction to it. The sharp crack of combat magic, distinctive even through a hundred meters of dense forest. And underneath both, the low percussive resonance of something very large moving through ground that was not designed for its weight.
Ethan extended the Zone to absolute maximum as they ran, building a picture from the data arriving at the edges of his range. The camp clearing was partially visible: the mana-fire extinguished, tents scattered from their arrangement, the faculty signatures showing the specific distortion of mages in active combat or recently incapacitated. Student signatures scattered across the clearing and the forest edges in the disorganized pattern of a group that had been told to run and had run in several directions at once.
And at the center of it, the massive unstable signature.
"The faculty instructor," Clara said, as they reached the camp perimeter — not a question, she was reading the same scene from what she could sense at shorter range. "Down?"
"The primary one is down," he said. "The other two are at the far edge — they retreated with the students."
They came through the tree line.
The Calamity Bear was approximately what the name suggested, rendered in the specific way that spatial rift contamination rendered things: larger than the natural form should allow, the proportions slightly wrong in the way of things that had been remade by an energy source that did not share the world's rules. Three meters at the shoulder. The mana emanation coming off it was the specific toxic quality he had registered from a distance — not merely strong, but destabilizing, the kind of output that disrupted ambient mana fields and, at close range, would interfere with any technique that relied on stable channel conditions.
The lead faculty instructor was down at the camp's northwest edge, conscious but unable to stand, the expression of someone who had taken a hit that had bypassed their defenses and was still working out what had bypassed it.
The student group was gone. The retreat had been clean enough — the remaining two faculty had done their job, moving the students east toward the designated emergency extraction point.
Clara stopped at the tree line beside him. She was reading the scene with the same systematic assessment he was, and he watched her arrive at the same conclusions and watched her decide in the same moment he decided.
She stepped forward.
"Retreat to the extraction point," she said, in the carrying voice she used when she meant to be heard across a space. She was not speaking to the lead instructor, who already knew this. She was speaking to the two students who had not fully retreated — frozen at the camp's south edge, unable to make themselves complete the withdrawal. "Now. Don't stop."
They moved.
Ethan came to stand beside her at the camp's center with the Bear twenty meters away and the camp destroyed around them and the lead instructor slowly attempting to push himself upright behind them.
"Get clear," Clara said to the instructor, without looking at him.
"You can't—" the instructor began.
"We can," she said. "Get clear."
He stopped arguing and began to move.
Ethan was already reading the Bear through the Zone, mapping its behavior patterns in the fifty seconds since he had come within proper range. The spatial rift contamination had altered its instinct structure as well as its physical form — it was not acting like an animal, not even like an aggravated alpha. It was acting like something that was in pain and had decided that everything in its immediate environment was responsible for the pain and should be removed.
This was, he thought, a more dangerous behavioral profile than a simple territorial aggression.
"Its mana is destabilized at the emanation boundary," he said. "Close-range Lightning work will be partially affected. The disruption field extends approximately four meters from its body."
"How close do I need to be for an effective strike?"
"Three meters or less for the branching output to penetrate the disruption."
"So inside the disruption field."
"Yes."
She processed this with the focused quality she brought to tactical problems that had no comfortable solution. "Flash Step gets me there. The disruption will affect the infusion once I am inside it."
"Yes. You will need to establish the infusion before you enter the field and maintain it through the disruption." He paused. "The Zone can partially compensate for the disruption — I can run a stabilizing interference at the boundary while you are inside. It will not eliminate the effect but it will reduce it."
"How close do you need to be to do that?"
"Inside the field with you."
She looked at him for one second — not the tactical assessment, the other thing, the quality that was neither the composure nor the unguarded but the third kind.
Then she looked back at the Bear, which had registered their presence and was turning toward them with the specific quality of something that had found new things to remove.
"Together then," she said.
They moved.
The first thirty seconds were the worst.
The Bear's disruption field hit him as he entered it — a mana interference that was not quite the same as the interference from a conventional opponent's technique, but something rawer and less structured, the output of a creature whose fundamental nature had been altered without its consent. The Zone flickered at the boundary, its ambient reading becoming unreliable in the specific way of sense overwhelmed by static. He pushed through the static and established the interference pattern he had described — the Zone's field working against the Bear's emanation, not blocking it but creating a counter-frequency that reduced its intensity within a specific radius.
It worked. Partially. The disruption was reduced to the point where Clara's infusion could hold.
The Bear struck first.
He read the attack a fraction of a second before it landed — the specific pre-movement signature in the Bear's mana, the compression before the physical action. He moved to intersect rather than dodge, the Draconic Might fully engaged, and took the strike on his forearm rather than letting it reach Clara, who was in the positioning sequence for the Flash Step approach.
The impact was significant. He did not budge. The Draconic Might distributed the force through his full body and he stood in the disruption field with his arm absorbing what a standard mage's defensive technique could not have absorbed, and he did not move from the position he had established.
Clara was already in motion.
The Flash Step she executed in the disruption field was visibly different from her clean-environment technique — the infusion flickered twice as it ran against the Bear's emanation, the branch pattern becoming irregular under the interference. He pushed harder at the counter-frequency in the Zone, finding the specific interference profile that matched the disruption and working against it.
The infusion steadied.
She arrived at three meters from the Bear's center mass and released the branching strike at full output, all the weeks of training and all the precision of the channel structure that had spent seven weeks developing in exactly the right direction, focused into a single moment of complete expression.
The strike hit.
The Bear went down to one knee.
Not defeated. Staggered, the massive form collapsing partially under the impact, the spatial rift energy in its system disrupted by the specific quality of Lightning mana that had been developed to run clean and controlled and was now running at full output without holding anything back.
But not defeated.
It rose.
Ethan felt it coming in the Zone — the recovery pattern in its mana, faster than he had expected, the rift contamination acting as a kind of regenerative force as well as a destructive one. The Bear came up from one knee with the speed of something that had been hurt and was responding to the hurt with everything it had.
Clara was still in the disruption field, three meters from the Bear, with the infusion expended.
The Bear swung.
He was not fast enough.
The claws caught her across the left side, the specific impact of a glancing strike from something three times her mass — not the full force, which would have been something much worse, but enough. She stumbled, losing the positioning the Flash Step had established, her left arm coming up to absorb what the rest of her body could not.
He heard the sound she made.
Not a cry. Something smaller than that. The sound of someone absorbing a significant impact and deciding not to let it be larger than it was.
She was down to one knee.
The Bear turned toward her.
Ethan was already between them.
Not by plan — by the specific automatic quality of a response that did not pass through calculation. The Zone had given him the Bear's attack vector a fraction of a second before the attack, the Draconic Might was running at maximum, and he had moved.
He stood between Clara and the Calamity Bear in the center of the ruined camp.
The Bear was two meters away.
He extended the Zone into full offensive configuration — the mode he had been developing since Mana Zone's emergence, the compression-expansion pattern that could function as a force field at close range. He was inside the Bear's disruption field, which meant the disruption was working on the Zone too, but the Zone was running at a frequency the disruption had not accounted for. Vance mana, dense and old and very specifically itself, operating on a register that the rift contamination's interference was not calibrated for.
The Bear struck.
The Zone caught it.
Not fully — the force bled through at the edges, the impact distributed across the Zone field and then across Ethan's body by the Draconic Might, and he went back one step. One step.
He held.
Behind him, he felt Clara moving — the familiar signature, not retreating, pushing herself back to standing. He heard her breathing, the specific pattern of someone managing pain and doing it deliberately.
"I'm up," she said.
He did not look back.
"I need thirty seconds," he said.
"You have them."
The thirty seconds were among the most demanding of his life.
He held the Zone against the Bear's full attention — the strikes, the mana interference, the sheer physical presence of something three times his mass that was not stopping. The Draconic Might absorbed what the Zone distributed and his body absorbed what the Draconic Might distributed, and he catalogued the impacts and processed them and did not move from the position he had established.
Behind him, he felt the infusion beginning to build. Clara reestablishing the branching pattern, slower than clean conditions, the pain in her side visible in the slight distortion of the channel architecture, but building. The anchor state running underneath it, steadying the rebuild.
He felt the infusion reach its ready point.
"When you want," he said.
She did not answer in words.
The strike came over his right shoulder — the specific angle that his position in front of the Bear had left open, the line she had been calculating during the thirty seconds he had held position. It was not the same strike as before. It was what you threw when you had been hurt and were angry in the specific way that combined pain and clarity, when every unnecessary thing had been removed and what remained was absolute precision.
It hit the Bear at the exact center of its mana structure.
The spatial rift contamination shattered. The rift energy that had been sustaining the Bear's enhanced state discharged outward in a visible pulse — the ruined camp illuminated briefly by the pale light of rift energy dissipating — and the Bear, freed from the contamination that had been driving it, went down.
Not dead.
Downed — the natural creature underneath the contamination, massive and exhausted and no longer functioning as a threat, collapsed in the center of the camp clearing in the specific way of something that had been running far beyond its capacity and had finally stopped.
The disruption field dissipated.
The Zone returned to full clarity.
Ethan stood in the sudden quiet of the cleared camp and read the silence and found nothing threatening in it. He turned.
Clara was standing three meters behind him. Her left side was marked where the claws had caught her — the jacket torn, the underneath dark with blood that was not catastrophic but was real. She was holding herself with the deliberate quality of someone applying effort to appearing stable.
She was looking at him.
Not at the Bear, not at the camp. At him.
He walked back to her.
She did not say anything immediately. She looked at him with the full quality of her attention — the third expression, the one that was neither the composure nor the unguarded but both and more, the expression he had been accumulating data on for eight weeks and that had a new layer in it now, a layer that had not been there before and that he understood with the specific understanding of someone who had just done something that could not be taken back in front of someone who had watched every second of it.
She reached out and put her hand against his face.
Not urgently. With the specific deliberateness of someone making a choice about how to touch something they are careful with.
"You held," she said.
"Yes."
"You took five strikes to hold that position."
"The count was four."
"Five," she said, with the certainty of someone who had been paying very close attention. "I counted."
He looked at her.
"Your side," he said.
"I know," she said. "Come here."
