Clara woke in the desk chair at half past six.
Not with the disorientation of waking somewhere unexpected — she had known where she was when she fell asleep, or rather when sleep had arrived without her full consent sometime in the second hour of working through the Shadow Wolf documentation. She had known she was in Ethan's room, at Ethan's desk, in the chair she had been sitting in since eleven thirty, and waking up in it had the specific quality of returning to a place rather than discovering one.
The lamp had burned out. The morning light was in the room — thin, November-quality, coming through the window at the angle of early morning. The notebook was on the desk in front of her. The Resonance Heart was beside it, where Ethan had left it before lying down.
Ethan was still asleep.
She sat in the chair for a few minutes and did not do anything in particular.
This was unusual for her. She was not someone who occupied spaces passively — there was generally a task, a plan, a next thing to be attending to. What she was doing now was not passive exactly, but it was not any of those things. She was simply in the room with the morning coming through the window and the specific quality of the prior night present in the air, and she was letting it be present without immediately converting it into a category.
She looked at the last line in the notebook, still visible from where she sat: *The old man was right about most things.*
She looked at the Resonance Heart.
She thought about the clearing session, weeks ago, when she had put her hand over it through his jacket — not knowing quite why, only knowing it was the right movement for the moment. She thought about last night, his hand turning under hers in the ruined camp, the specific quality of palm-to-palm contact, the weight of what they had just survived present in the simple fact of the touch.
Ethan's breathing changed.
She looked up. He was awake — not startled awake, the gradual return to consciousness she had seen once before, the organized transition from sleep. He lay on his back and looked at the ceiling for a moment and then looked at her.
The expression he wore in that first moment before he had organized anything was one she had seen a few times and had been filing carefully: the expression he had when he was not performing anything, not even the careful neutrality he had developed as a default. Just him, in the specific quality of a person waking up and finding something in their room that they had not expected to find and that they were, nevertheless, not surprised to find.
"You stayed," he said.
"I fell asleep," she said. "That is not the same thing."
"No," he agreed. "But the outcome is the same."
She looked at the desk. "I finished the Shadow Wolf documentation."
"In the chair."
"It was serviceable." She rolled her shoulder, which was objecting to the hours in the chair with the specific complaint of a shoulder that had been in one position too long. "Your chair is less comfortable than it looks."
"I have not slept in it."
"I recommend against it."
He sat up, and they were both in the room in the morning, and it was ordinary and not ordinary at the same time, and she found she did not need to resolve the contradiction.
"How is your side?" he said.
"Sore. As predicted." She stood and stretched and began gathering the notes she had spread across his desk. "We have meetings today."
"I know."
"Mereth again. The incident report submission. Possibly another conversation with the Headmaster's office depending on how the inquiry from Julian's father has developed overnight." She paused, looking at her list. "Also breakfast, which we should both eat before any of that."
"Yes," he said. "Both of us."
She looked up from the list. He was looking at her with the expression that did not perform anything, and she held it for a moment in the specific way she was still learning — receiving it without deflecting, without converting it into something more manageable.
"Yes," she said. "Both of us."

The institutional aftermath of Shadow Woods had the specific shape of institutional aftermaths everywhere: a series of conversations that were necessary and productive and also required the specific kind of energy that came from saying accurate things in precise ways to people who had authority over parts of the situation.
Ethan moved through them with the precision he brought to situations that required navigation. Clara moved through them beside him, handling the framing while he handled the technical content, in the specific complementary way they had developed for difficult rooms.
Mereth's concern was genuine. She asked about the Zone's function in the disruption field — the technical question of how Gold-Rank mana had performed under contamination conditions — and about the decision to hold position under sustained strikes. She asked these questions with the quality of someone who was trying to understand what she had been told happened rather than challenge the decision that had been made.
Ethan answered accurately. He said: the Zone performed better than expected because the contamination was calibrated for standard mana and the Vance mana quality fell outside its interference parameters. He said: holding position was the correct decision given what was needed in the moment. He said these things without apology because they were true and the situation had resolved as well as it could have resolved.
Mereth said: "I am recommending you for the advanced combat training track. Formally, through the appropriate channels. Given what I observed in the tournament and what I have been told of Shadow Woods, the recommendation is overdue."
Ethan received this without the deflection he would have produced three months ago.
"Thank you," he said.
The Headmaster meeting was more procedural. The inquiry from the Ashcroft family had arrived through formal noble petition channels and had been routed to the administration. The academy's response was standard: student privacy protections applied to all enrolled students regardless of external inquiries, formal legal process would be required for any information release. The response had been sent. The matter was, for the moment, managed.
But the moment was not indefinite.
They were in the library at the third table from the window by early afternoon, the standard work of their days resumed around the non-standard context of everything that was currently in motion. The table had the same quality it always had: theirs, uncontested, the accumulated presence of the weeks making it simply where they were.
Clara had her notebook open with the Seren Aldric timeline written in her precise hand.
"The inquiry arrived this morning," she said. "Seren's estimate was three to five weeks from the tournament record. We are at exactly three weeks."
"Faster than I hoped," he said.
"Expected," she said. "Not hoped. The estimate had a range because the rate depended on resources and attention. The Ashcroft family has both." She made a note. "This accelerates the Sunday meeting with Seren. We have less room than we thought."
"Four weeks to the tournament."
"Four weeks," she confirmed. She set the pen down and looked at him directly. "Are you ready for that? Not the tournament. What the tournament represents."
He considered this with the seriousness it deserved.
"I have been ready for things to change for some time," he said. "Whether I am ready for this specific change, with these specific circumstances, in this specific company—" He paused. "Yes. With those qualifications, yes."
She looked at him with the third expression, the one that was neither the composure nor the unguarded but the full thing that was both.
"Good," she said. She picked up the pen. "Then let us make sure we are prepared for all of it."
They worked through the afternoon, and the library held them in its quiet, and outside the window the November city continued its ordinary business, and the Resonance Heart under Ethan's shirt was warm with the specific warmth it had been carrying since the clearing two days ago — not building, not anticipating, simply present.
Everything that needed to happen was going to happen.
He found, sitting at the third table from the window with the warm lamp and the sound of Clara's pen and the Mana Zone registering the familiar signature at arm's length, that he was all right with that.
