The summons from the Headmaster's office arrived Tuesday afternoon.
Not a message through the faculty system or a note left at his dormitory door — a formal letter, sealed with the administrative seal of Celestia Magic Academy, delivered by a staff member who knocked and waited for acknowledgment before handing it over. This was the specific level of formality the administration used for things it considered significant, and the letter was consistent with that formality: his full name, the time of the requested meeting, the phrase pursuant to an inquiry from an external party that required no elaboration.
He read it and set it on the desk beside the Resonance Heart and looked at both of them for a moment.
Then he found Clara.
She was in the advanced program's training room — Tuesdays, two hours in the afternoon, one of the two sessions per week that the program had added to her schedule since the Mock Battle. He knew her schedule well enough to know where she would be without checking, which was one of the things that had quietly changed and that he did not examine too carefully because examining it too carefully was its own kind of unnecessary work.
He waited in the corridor outside the training room.
She came out seven minutes before the session ended — he had not sent a message, but the Divine Link had been running since morning and whatever it transmitted between them had been sufficient. She was already reading his expression when she came through the door.
"The Headmaster," she said.
"Letter arrived an hour ago. Meeting is at four."
She looked at the clock in the corridor. Two forty-five. An hour and fifteen minutes. She considered the timeline with the specific efficiency she brought to scheduling.
"Enough time to prepare," she said. "Come on."
---
They spent the intervening hour in the Archive — the specific choice of the Archive rather than the main library or either of their rooms, because the Archive had been the space where they had first navigated something significant together, and returning to it for preparation felt right in a way that neither of them articulated but both understood.
The preparation was not extensive because they had been preparing for this possibility since the day Seren Aldric sat down in the dining hall. Clara had notes. Ethan had the technical detail. The strategy for the meeting had two parts: give the Headmaster enough accurate information to understand the situation without giving so much that it complicated the academy's ability to respond with its standard protections, and demonstrate that the situation was being managed with competence rather than requiring institutional intervention.
The second part was as important as the first. Institutions responded better to competence than to crisis.
"If he asks about the rank discrepancy," Clara said, working through the outline, "the answer is family safety reasons, which is true. If he asks about the Shadow Woods incident, we give the accurate account including the mana capabilities demonstrated, because the incident report is already in the system and consistency matters. If he asks about the external party making the inquiry—"
"I don't confirm or deny knowing who they are," Ethan said. "Because I don't know the legal standing of their inquiry at this point, and claiming knowledge could complicate the academy's position."
"Yes." She made a note. "And if he asks what we want the academy to do—"
"Standard student privacy protections have been sufficient so far and we appreciate the academy's support in maintaining them." He paused. "Which is true."
"Which is true," she confirmed. She set the pen down and looked at the outline. "I think that covers the primary scenarios. The secondary scenarios depend on what angle the Headmaster takes, which we cannot predict, so we respond accurately to what is actually asked rather than trying to anticipate everything."
"Yes."
She looked at him. "Are you ready?"
"Yes," he said. Then, because it was true and the cleared morning was still present in everything: "With you there, yes."
She received this in the way she had been learning to receive things from him — without deflecting, without the management layer, simply holding it.
"Then let us go," she said.
---
The Headmaster's office occupied the top floor of the administration tower and had the quality of a space that had been used for serious conversations for a very long time — not formal in an ostentatious way, but with the specific weight of accumulated purpose. The desk was large and functional. The windows looked out over the academy courtyard. Behind the desk, the Headmaster was a man in his sixties with the particular quality of someone who had been navigating academic politics for decades and had developed a thorough immunity to performance.
His name was Aldric Pennworth, and when they came in he looked at them both with the same level attention he might have given to any two students, which told Ethan something useful about his approach.
"Vance and Sterling," he said. "Sit down."
They sat.
He looked at them for a moment — the assessment of someone reading a situation. Then he said: "I am going to tell you what I know, and then I am going to ask you some questions, and I would appreciate honest answers. Can I have that?"
"Yes," Ethan said.
"Yes," Clara said.
The Headmaster told them what he knew. It was, Ethan noted, considerably more than the formal inquiry letter had suggested — not only the Ashcroft petition, but information from Mereth's observations, the Shadow Woods incident report, the tournament performance analysis that the faculty combat division had been running since the Mock Battle final. The Headmaster had done his own preparation.
"The picture I have," the Headmaster said, "is a student with exceptional capabilities who has been enrolled at F-Rank for three years, who came to visible attention approximately two months ago, and who now has an external party inquiring through formal noble petition channels about family matters connected to that student." He looked at Ethan. "Is the external party a threat to you?"
"Potentially," Ethan said.
"Have you taken steps to manage that threat?"
"Yes."
"With assistance?"
Ethan glanced at Clara. "With assistance."
The Headmaster's gaze moved to Clara with the specific quality of a man reassessing an assumption. "Lady Sterling. Your family's involvement in this situation?"
"Personal choice," Clara said. Precise, simple, without elaboration.
He looked at her for a moment and appeared to receive this as the complete answer it was.
"The academy's student privacy protections," he said, returning to Ethan, "extend to all enrolled students regardless of external inquiry. The Ashcroft petition has been responded to in the standard fashion. That response creates a legal obligation on the external party that delays their ability to act through official channels by approximately four to six weeks." He paused. "The Grand Tournament begins in four weeks."
"Yes," Ethan said.
"If the threat you are managing is likely to intersect with the tournament, that creates an institutional security consideration that the academy takes seriously." He looked between them. "What I need to know is whether you can manage this without requiring the academy to take actions that would expose its own institutional position."
Ethan thought about Sunday's meeting with Seren and Tavish, the specific plan that had taken shape over the past week, the intelligence they had about the Acquisitors' approach and timing.
"We can manage it," he said.
"With the assistance you mentioned."
"With the assistance."
The Headmaster was quiet for a moment, looking at the desk rather than at them, the thinking silence of someone running a calculation.
"Mereth's assessment of your capabilities," he said at last, "is the highest unsolicited assessment I have received in eleven years in this position. Her exact words were: 'this student has been wasting the academy's time and his own by being here at F-Rank, and the academy has been wasting his.'" He looked up. "I tend to agree with her, in retrospect. The rank reassessment is scheduled for Friday. Whatever the result, it will reflect what is actually true." He paused. "And whatever the result, you remain a student of this academy with full protections until the day you graduate. Is that understood?"
"Yes," Ethan said. "Thank you."
The Headmaster made a note. "That will be all."
They stood and walked out of the office and through the tower stairwell and out into the academy courtyard, where the late afternoon had the specific quality of November: cold, clear, the light going to amber.
Clara said nothing for a moment.
Then: "He knew considerably more than the letter suggested."
"Yes."
"Mereth had prepared him."
"Almost certainly."
"She said the academy had been wasting your time."
"In retrospect."
Clara was quiet again, and he let her be quiet, because she was processing and her processing required space and he had learned that about her sufficiently well to simply walk beside her and wait.
After a while she said: "I want to be angry on your behalf about the three years. I have been trying not to be because the anger serves no practical purpose and you clearly do not carry it yourself. But it is difficult."
He looked at her.
"Don't be," he said. "The three years produced what the three years needed to produce. Including the Archive. Including seven weeks in a clearing. Including—" He stopped. "All of it was the path. I don't regret the path."
She turned to look at him directly with the full quality of her attention.
"You are," she said, "an unreasonably gracious person."
"I learned it from someone," he said.
Something moved in her expression — the specific something that arrived when he said something she had not seen coming and that she found more than she had expected.
"Breakfast tomorrow," she said, turning back toward the north tower.
"Six o'clock," he said.
"Seven. You need the sleep."
He thought about arguing and decided not to. She was right. She was frequently right about the basic maintenance requirements of being a person, which was one of the things about her that had proven consistently useful and occasionally annoying and that he had come to regard as one of the more reliable features of his current situation.
"Seven," he said.
She walked toward the north tower, and he watched her go, and the Mana Zone held her signature across the courtyard until she was out of range, and he stood in the amber afternoon and thought about four weeks and what they contained and what he was going to bring to them.
All of it.
The same answer it had been for three weeks now and that was not going to change.
