The secure chamber at the center of Gyeongbok Palace smelled of old stone and something that had no corresponding smell in Seoul — a clean, cold scent like air at very high altitude, the atmosphere of a place that existed at the intersection of two different kinds of sky.
The core team had established a rest position against the chamber's eastern wall. The guardians had withdrawn fully after the final chamber clearing — a withdrawal that the Director's Cut was reading as provisional acceptance rather than defeat, the palace's intelligence having assessed them and reached a tentative conclusion that they were permitted to be here, for now, for purposes it was still evaluating. Min-woo had communicated this to the group as *the guardian activity has shifted from defensive to observational,* which was accurate and significantly less alarming than the full description.
He was aware that he was still managing the information flow. He was aware that he had told Chae-won he would tell her when he was guessing. He was guessing on a significant portion of the current landscape.
He had not told her yet.
He added it to the list of things he needed to tell her and would tell her at the right moment, and thought that the list was getting long enough that the right moment might need to simply be the next available one.
---
The test came at 8:47 in the morning.
They had been in the palace for six hours, had rested for two, had eaten the ration packs Min-woo had included in the Elisian kits — a detail he had included because he knew how long the palace sequence would take and which felt, from inside it, less like foresight and more like the specific mundane care of someone who had thought about whether she would be hungry.
Chae-won gave him false information.
He was updating the chamber map — noting the guardian positions and the response patterns they had encountered, building a picture of the palace's behavioral logic — when she said, in the tone she used for tactical contributions: *"The guardian rotation in the western corridor runs on a sixty-minute cycle. We should factor that into the next approach timing."*
Min-woo wrote this down. Nodded. Moved on to the next data point.
In the back of his mind, the Director's Cut registered a discrepancy: the guardian behavioral data it had been building through six hours of observation did not support a sixty-minute rotation cycle. The pattern was different — more responsive than cyclical, adapting to the group's presence rather than running on a fixed timer.
He said nothing about the discrepancy.
He filed it.
Forty minutes later, when he was calculating the approach timing for the next corridor, he used the Director's Cut's actual data rather than the sixty-minute cycle she had given him. The difference was meaningful — a fifteen-minute variance that would have placed them in a suboptimal position if he had used her number.
He had not used her number.
He had not mentioned that he was not using her number.
He became aware, at this point, that Chae-won was watching him with the specific quality of attention she brought to experiments.
---
She came to him directly when Jin-hyuk and his team were on perimeter watch and the chamber was as private as it was going to get.
*"You didn't use what I told you,"* she said.
Min-woo looked at her. *"The rotation data?"*
*"Yes. It was incorrect and you knew it was incorrect and you didn't use it."*
*"The guardian pattern I've been observing suggested a different cycle."*
*"So your source was more reliable than what I gave you."* She sat down across from him, the way she sat when she was going to stay for the duration of a conversation. *"What is your source?"*
The question arrived with the quality of something that had been building for a while — not the casual version of the inquiry she had been making in smaller forms since day two, but the direct version, the one she had been approaching for eighteen days and had decided, sitting in an Elisian palace chamber with guardians in the corridors and no one else within earshot, to finally ask completely.
Min-woo looked at her.
He had prepared deflections for this question. He had several available, each more or less plausible, each capable of redirecting the conversation while leaving the core question unanswered. He had used versions of these deflections for eighteen days.
He reached for one and stopped.
The pause lasted long enough to be information. She read it as information.
*"It's not a source I can fully explain,"* he said. *"And I'm aware that's an unsatisfying answer."*
*"It is,"* she said. *"But it's more honest than the other answers you've given me, so keep going."*
He looked at the chamber wall. At the Elisian stone with its different understanding of weight. At the corridor where a guardian was waiting with the patience of something built to wait.
*"Would you like the best version of the truth I currently have?"* he said.
*"Yes."*
He thought about how to give it to her. Not the screenplay — he was not ready for that conversation, was not sure he would ever be ready for it in the way he wanted to be, which was in a version where he understood what it meant before he said it. But the shape of it. The honest shape.
*"When the Reality Glitch happened,"* he said, *"I received access to something I've been calling the Director's Cut. It's a system — informational, perceptual. It gives me data about this world that I can't account for through normal means. Creature behavior. Spatial information. Future probability assessments."* He paused. *"It's been accurate. Not perfectly — it degrades as we move further from the baseline scenarios it was calibrated for. Elisia is significantly outside that baseline. The information I have here is rougher."*
*"The patrol data,"* she said. *"The Easter Eggs. The Hanseong intelligence."*
*"Yes."*
*"All of it from this system."*
*"Most of it. The rest is genuine observation and analysis. The system supplements rather than replaces those."*
She was quiet, building the picture. He let her build it without interruption.
*"What else does it tell you?"* she asked.
*"Emotional states,"* he said. *"Of people in proximity. A gauge of psychological condition, affection, intent."*
She looked at him. *"It reads people."*
*"Yes."*
Another silence. Longer this time. He watched her process the full scope of what he had described — not just the tactical information, but the interpersonal. The eighteen days of her psychological state being available to him if he chose to open the interface.
*"Have you been reading me?"* she asked.
He met her eyes. *"Less than I could have. More than I should have at the beginning."* A pause. *"I stopped using it for you specifically. Some time ago."*
*"When?"*
*"The night after the Gyeongbok event. I decided — I closed the gauge for you and made a deliberate choice not to reopen it for information purposes."*
*"But you could."*
*"The system is still there. I choose not to open it."* He looked at her. *"There's a difference."*
She held this. He watched her deciding whether she believed it, whether the distinction was meaningful, whether it changed the picture she had been building or confirmed it differently.
*"Why me specifically?"* she asked.
This was the question. The one underneath all the other questions, the one that had been arriving in smaller forms for eighteen days and was now here, fully, without negotiation or deniability.
Min-woo looked at the Elisian stone.
*"I don't know,"* he said.
Not deflection — the truth. He had thought about this. Had examined it with the analytical precision he applied to everything and had arrived at the honest conclusion that the thing he felt when he considered opening the Affection Gauge for Chae-won was not a thing he had a clean analytical account of. He knew the observation. He could not explain the observer.
*"I notice that I don't want to,"* he said. *"In a way I don't notice about anyone else. The system offers it and I — I close it. I've examined whether that's tactical and it isn't. It's something else."*
Chae-won was quiet for a moment.
*"That's the most honest thing you've told me,"* she said.
*"Yes."*
*"I'd like more of those."*
*"I'd like to give you more of those."*
The words arrived without planning — not the managed version, not the sentence he had been carrying prepared. Just the direct form of the true thing. She received it with the stillness she brought to things that mattered, the quality of attention that was not reaction but genuine arrival.
*"The system,"* she said, after a moment. *"What does it say about what's ahead? In Elisia?"*
*"Less than I'd like. The Elisian data is incomplete — I have outlines where I'd want maps."* He paused. *"There's a trial ahead. The Spirit Tribe requires it before granting deeper Elisia access. I've been thinking about how to tell you about it."*
*"Tell me now."*
*"It assesses intent,"* he said. *"Not capability. The Tribe wants to know why the companions are here — what they want, in relation to the Saint."*
She looked at him. *"And you've been thinking about it because—"*
*"Because the trial makes visible what the companion's intentions are,"* he said. *"To everyone present."* A pause. *"Including the Saint."*
The chamber was quiet.
*"I see,"* Chae-won said.
Neither of them said anything for a while.
Min-woo thought about the word *intent* and what it would look like rendered visible, and thought about what he would want Chae-won to see and what he was not yet certain he was ready to have seen, and arrived at the conclusion that the things he was not ready for had been accumulating for eighteen days and the Spirit Tribe was simply going to formalize what was already present in every corner table conversation and supply room shelf and stopped sentence.
*"When?"* she asked.
*"When we reach the Spirit Tribe territory. Days away, I think. The timeline is uncertain."*
She nodded. Then: *"Min-woo."*
*"Yes."*
*"The honest ones."* She stood, picked up her pack. *"Keep giving me those."*
She went to relieve Jin-hyuk on the perimeter watch.
Min-woo sat in the Elisian chamber and thought about the trial and the word *intent* and the honest ones, and thought that he was running out of space between what he was doing and what he was going to have to say about it, and that the space had been shrinking since day one and had been, in some part of him that he had not been consulting until recently, exactly the right size all along.
---
Later, when the watch rotation had cycled and the chamber had the particular quiet of people who have been in danger for long enough to sleep through ambient uncertainty, Min-woo opened the Affection Gauge.
He read it fully. Let it populate completely. Read the emotional state data and the trust indicators and the numbers he had been closing before they finished loading for the better part of two weeks.
At the bottom, the narrative note:
**[NOTE: Subject has begun independent investigation of User's system. Investigation is direct, not inferential. Partial disclosure has occurred. Recommend: User evaluate remaining disclosure timeline. Full discovery by Subject: estimated 4-7 days without additional disclosure. Earlier if Subject accelerates investigation.]**
Four to seven days.
He closed the Affection Gauge.
He sat with the four to seven days and thought about what he wanted to say before she found it herself, and whether there was a version of the truth he could give her that was complete enough to be fair, and what *fair* meant in the context of a person who had been reading her emotional state for eighteen days while telling her about it only in fragments.
He thought about what she had said. *The honest ones. Keep giving me those.*
Four to seven days.
He was going to need to tell her everything before the trial.
He was not yet sure he knew how to do that without losing the thing he was most afraid of losing, which was the specific quality of the way she looked at him now, before she knew everything, while she was still deciding.
He thought that was a coward's accounting.
He sat with that too.
You've reached the end of this chapter
