The trial light was not the light he had been expecting.
He had written *[trial sequence — develop later]* and had imagined, in the vague way he had imagined most of the Elisian material, something dramatic: visible magic, clear assessment, the kind of trial that translated well to the visual language he had been working in for seven years. He had been thinking about it cinematically.
The reality was quieter than cinema and more complete.
The light appeared around each companion in turn — not imposed from outside but revealed from within, the Spirit Tribe's assessment drawing out what was there rather than projecting onto it. Jin-hyuk first. The light around him was clear and strong and had the quality Min-woo had come to associate with choices made correctly over time: not uncomplicated, people who made difficult choices correctly were never uncomplicated, but directed. The Tribe elders observed it with the expression of recognition. The assessment took perhaps three minutes.
Jin-hyuk's three team members: solid, purposeful, carrying the specific weight of people who had decided to be present in a hard situation and had remained present through it. The Tribe acknowledged each one with the particular attention of entities who valued commitment.
Then Min-woo.
---
The light appeared around him and was immediately different.
He felt it — not painfully, not invasively, with the quality of a thorough assessment that was not in a hurry. The Spirit Tribe's elders were looking at him with the specific attention they had given the others, but the expression on their faces was not recognition. It was something more complex. Something that contained recognition and more than recognition — the expression of people who have performed many assessments and are encountering something that requires more of them than most assessments do.
The light was showing them the layers.
He knew what the layers were. He had been carrying them for twenty-nine days and had come to know their texture: the Director's Cut at the center, the system that had given him the dungeon world's logic and the Affection Gauge and the Editing Mind and the foreknowledge that had been, for twenty-nine days, the primary architecture of how he operated. Around it, the screenplay — the written world, the character outlines, the two sentences about the merger and the underdeveloped Elisia sections and the NPC death flag that he had refused. Around that, the twenty-nine days themselves.
The twenty-nine days were the largest layer.
He stood still and let the trial show them.
---
The Affection Gauge history went first.
He could not see what the elders were seeing — the trial's output was for the Spirit Tribe, not for him — but he could feel the specific things being drawn out, the way you felt the contents of a room when someone turned on the lights: suddenly visible, suddenly present, exactly as they had always been.
The UNKNOWN of day one. The RECALIBRATING. The numbers he had closed before they finished loading. The deliberate choice on the night after the Gyeongbok event to stop opening it for information. The UNCLASSIFIED TRANSITIONAL. The reading he had let sit for four seconds before closing. The REDACTED.
All of it, in order, visible.
He felt Chae-won's attention shift.
She was watching. He had known she would be watching. He had come to the trial prepared to be watched and had told himself this was acceptable and had meant it. Feeling her watching while the Affection Gauge history was visible was different from the intellectual preparation for it.
He remained still.
The redirections went next.
He felt them being drawn out with the specific completeness of the trial's assessment — each time he had fed Jin-hyuk information designed to steer him away from specific situations with Chae-won, each calculation that had been motivated by something other than tactical optimization. The Gyeongbok operation and the formation choices. The daily small redirections. The food court morning when Jin-hyuk had been sent to the logistics issue while he had gone to find her on the roof.
All of it.
He remained still.
The preparation history: the gauze in the pocket. The trigger zone at seventy percent. The item in her pack. The glasses. The shelf with her name. The fifty-two-page briefing document. The Hanseong intelligence timed to neutralize the threat to her specifically.
All of it, visible.
He remained still and let it be seen.
---
Then the Author's Curse assessment.
This was the layer he had not told her about until three days ago — the information that had been developing while he had been deciding whether he was ready to share it, the sacrifice requirement and the timeline and the progressive destabilization. The weeks of processing it alone before the vigil's morning and the *together is not negotiable.*
The trial drew it out.
The fear of it: visible. The delayed disclosure: visible. The calculations he had been making alone about the cost and the readiness and what remained on the other side of the sacrifice: visible.
All of it.
He stood in the trial light and thought: *she is seeing this. She is seeing the weeks I spent processing it alone, the management I was doing while telling her I was being honest, the thing I was afraid of that I was working through before I told her I was afraid of it.*
He thought: *I told her. Eventually. I told her on the path this morning. I told her before the trial showed it.*
He thought: *eventually is not the same as immediately. She deserved immediately.*
The light completed.
The elders conferred in the specific silence of people who communicate through a medium that was not verbal and did not require time to carry information.
---
When the trial had finished — all six companions assessed, the Spirit Tribe's collective reading complete — Min-woo found Chae-won.
She was at the clearing's edge. Not away from him — not the retreat of someone who needed distance. The specific position of someone who had moved to a place where a conversation could happen without the whole party present.
He went to her.
She looked at him. Not the armor — she had not armored since the supply corridor, not with him. Not the almost-smile. The direct look, the complete one, holding everything the trial had shown.
*"You've known about the sacrifice,"* she said, *"for longer than you told me."*
*"Yes."*
*"Before the coma."*
*"I suspected it before the coma. The full assessment confirmed it during."*
*"You were deciding alone."*
He heard the distinction she was making — not *you kept it from me,* but *you were deciding alone,* which was the more precise version of what had happened. He had not been hiding it, exactly. He had been processing it in his own interior before bringing it out, the habit of twenty-nine days, the way he had been operating since before the Reality Glitch.
*"Yes,"* he said. *"I was deciding alone. Not whether to tell you — I was going to tell you. Deciding whether I was ready. Whether I understood it well enough to give you the complete version rather than the partial."*
*"And while you were deciding—"*
*"I was afraid,"* he said.
The word arrived before he had constructed the sentence around it — not the managed disclosure, the thing that came out because it was the truest answer to what she was approaching.
She was quiet.
*"Not of the sacrifice,"* he said. *"Not of losing the Director's Cut. Of—"* He paused. He looked at her. *"I've been running this system for twenty-nine days. It's how I've kept people safe. It's how I've known what to do. Without it I'm—"* He stopped. *"I'm just someone who loves you and doesn't know what happens next. I was afraid that wasn't enough."*
She held this.
The Elisian clearing was quiet around them. The Spirit Tribe elders were in conference. Jin-hyuk and his team were giving the conversation the space it needed.
*"Is it enough?"* she asked.
He thought about this. Not the reflexive answer — the true one, the answer that lived in the twenty-nine days of learning what he was without the system's assistance, the one that had arrived fully formed the night he had sat at the corner table with nothing running and had found the room was still there.
*"Yes,"* he said. *"I think it's more than enough. I was afraid it wouldn't be. I've been operating from a version of myself that required the system to be enough, and I've been—"* He paused. *"I've been learning, this whole time, that I was already enough without it. I just needed to know that before I gave it up."*
She looked at him for a long time.
Then she reached out and took his hand.
Not the restructuring-floor gesture, not the practical navigation grip that had been the first time. This one was deliberate — her hand finding his with the intention of someone who had decided and was expressing the decision through contact, in the open, in the Spirit Tribe clearing with six elders and Jin-hyuk and three team members all present.
Not announced. Simply done.
He looked at their hands.
He looked at her.
*"It's enough,"* she said. *"It's more than enough."* A pause. *"And we decide about the sacrifice together. Which you already agreed to. I'm agreeing again, officially, in the presence of witnesses."*
He looked at Jin-hyuk, who was very determinedly watching a section of the clearing that had nothing in it.
*"Together,"* Min-woo said.
*"Together,"* she confirmed.
Neither of them let go of the other's hand.
---
The Spirit Tribe delivered their recognition as the Elisian morning finished its approach to midday.
The eldest elder spoke at length — more than the brief acknowledgments of the preliminary assessments, a formal statement that the Director's Cut translated with the fluency of a system that had been running in Elisian magical territory for three days and had significantly improved its understanding of Elisian formal register.
The statement was, in full: *We have seen what the companions carry. We have seen the Saint and the person who walks beside her, who came to this world with more sight than most and has been learning, in this world, what sight is for. The companion who sees has turned his sight toward the Saint's wellbeing in every moment we observed — even the moments the sight was imperfect, even the moments the sight was used imprecisely, even the moments the fear of the sight's loss was larger than the courage required to be without it. We see the direction. We recognize the direction. We grant recognition to all companions present.*
Min-woo heard this translation and thought about *even the moments the sight was used imprecisely,* which was a diplomatic description of twenty-nine days of management and partial truth and redirections and alone-deciding, and thought that *imprecisely* was a generous word for some of what the trial had shown.
He thought: *I'll take generous. I'll do better.*
Jin-hyuk, beside him, said nothing. His expression was the real smile — the one underneath the performance, the one that appeared in moments of genuine connection. He was looking at Min-woo and Chae-won's joined hands with the expression of someone who has been watching something build for a long time and is glad it has arrived.
Min-woo looked at the expression.
He thought: *write that one down. That one's important.*
He thought: *the next part is the hard part. The Author's Curse, and the sacrifice, and the memory wipe, and the finding-again.*
He held her hand.
He thought: *good.*
