They left the court on the morning of day thirty-six.
The night before departure, Min-woo had done what he had been doing at the end of each day since the Spirit Tribe territory: sat with the Director's Cut's current assessment of the window. Day eleven of fifteen to twenty. Four to nine days remaining. The Narrative Lock three days from their current position. Margins existed but were no longer generous.
The return route through the scriptless zone moved faster than the approach had, which was the nature of routes that had already been navigated once — the terrain was not familiar but the methodology was, and the methodology was the same as it had been for three days: direct perception, real-time analysis, attention to the territory's own communication rather than to a map.
He moved through the scriptless zone's morning and registered what the zone was registering: a change in the substrate. Something that had not been present on the approach.
The Curse's correction mechanism had increased in activity.
Not dramatically. The substrate readings were elevated rather than alarming. But elevated in the specific direction of the correction mechanism's signature — the pattern he had been learning to recognize as the Curse's enforcement machinery operating against the changes he had made to the story's trajectory. The pattern he had been managing, in various intensities, for thirty-four days.
It was stronger today than it had been yesterday.
---
The First Warning arrived at 11:23.
Not through the Director's Cut — through the Elisian ground.
Min-woo felt it before the Director's Cut registered it, which had been happening more frequently since the sacrifice preview: the direct perception arriving first, the system's analysis following. The ground's response to his footfall changed — not physically, not a tremor or a shift, but in the quality of the feedback, the way the world registered his weight. Something had altered in how the territory was receiving his presence.
Then the Director's Cut:
**[AUTHOR'S CURSE — FIRST WARNING]** **Status: Resolution window active. Mechanism awareness confirmed.** **Note: The Curse has registered that its resolution mechanism is in approach. Correction function elevating.** **Current correction strength: 47% above baseline** **Projected escalation: Continuous until resolution or window expiration**
He read this.
Then the world shuddered.
Not physically — in the specific way that Min-woo had come to understand as Elisia's own communication, the world communicating through the quality of existence rather than through sound or sight. A structural shudder: something fundamental in the territory registering a change in the mechanism that had been operating within it for a very long time.
The Curse was aware that it was being approached.
It was communicating this awareness.
*"Something is wrong,"* Jin-hyuk said.
He said it with the specific quality of someone who was not describing a problem from the outside but experiencing something from the inside.
Min-woo looked at him.
---
Jin-hyuk was moving.
Not physically — standing in his position in the formation, feet planted, body still. Moving in the other way: the specific quality of someone who is being pulled in a direction and is actively resisting the pull. His expression was focused in the way that sustained effort produced focus — not strain, not fear, the face of someone doing something deliberate that required them.
*"The gravity,"* he said. *"It's stronger."*
Min-woo understood immediately. The Curse's correction mechanism, elevated by the First Warning's triggering, was operating on its designated narrative piece with increased force. The Original Male Lead's narrative gravity — the pull toward the designated ending — was being amplified.
*"How strong?"* Min-woo asked.
*"Manageable,"* Jin-hyuk said. *"I've been managing it for thirty-four days. This is louder."* He looked at Min-woo. *"Is this going to keep escalating?"*
*"Yes,"* Min-woo said. *"Until the Lock is reached. The Curse's correction function elevates as we approach the resolution point."*
Jin-hyuk processed this. *"How much time do we have?"*
*"Three days to the Lock. The window has four to nine days."*
Jin-hyuk was quiet for a moment — the processing quiet, the one that produced decisions rather than conclusions. *"What happens if the correction mechanism reaches full strength before you reach the Lock?"*
*"I don't know precisely,"* Min-woo said. *"The Director's Cut doesn't have that projection. The scriptless zone's data is real-time only."*
*"Educated guess."*
*"The story tries to complete its original ending by whatever means are available to it. Which means—"*
*"Me,"* Jin-hyuk said.
*"The correction mechanism's primary available tool is the Original Male Lead's designated narrative position. If it reaches full strength, the pressure on you will be—"*
*"Significant,"* Jin-hyuk said. Not a question.
*"Yes."*
Jin-hyuk looked at the scriptless zone around them — the territory that was not trying to be the story's original version and was instead simply being itself, which was the territory that existed when the Curse's grip was absent. He looked at it with the expression of someone who understood what it meant to be a tool being picked up by something larger than himself and was deciding, for the thirty-fifth time in thirty-six days, to put himself down instead.
*"Go,"* he said.
---
*"The correction mechanism is targeting you,"* Min-woo said.
*"I know,"* Jin-hyuk said. *"I can hold it. I've been holding it for thirty-four days. This is just louder."* The real smile — not the performance, the genuine version, appearing under circumstances that should not have produced it but did because it was who Jin-hyuk was when he was being himself. *"Go,"* he said. *"Write the ending."*
Min-woo looked at him.
He thought about thirty-six days of watching a person choose correctly, one decision at a time, in the private and unglamorous way that correct choices were made. He thought about *I'm choosing* and *keep going anyway* and the trial and the real smile and the two drinks at the court banquet and all of it.
*"Jin-hyuk,"* he said.
*"Go,"* Jin-hyuk said, with the patience of someone who had said the important things and was done waiting for them to be heard. *"I'll find you on the other side. Both of you."*
Chae-won said his name — the way she said names when she meant them, with everything in it. *"Jin-hyuk."*
He looked at her. Something passed between them that was the specific communication of two people who had understood each other correctly for a long time and were in a moment that required acknowledgment without time for elaboration.
*"I know,"* he said. *"Go."*
---
They moved.
Min-woo and Chae-won, through the scriptless zone, toward the Narrative Lock's direction that the Director's Cut was now tracking with the confidence of a system that knew where it was going even without foreknowledge of what it would find when it got there.
The Elisian landscape moved with them — not in the correction mechanism's direction, not toward the original story's shapes, simply with the motion of a world being traveled through. The substrate was elevated, the Curse's awareness of the approach visible in the way the magical field organized itself, but the scriptless zone was not the Curse's territory. The Curse had not written this part. The Curse did not have authority here.
They moved through territory that was Elisia's own and the Curse's correction machinery operated in the distance and was getting louder and Jin-hyuk was behind them holding it and ahead was the Narrative Lock three days away and the window four to nine days and they were running the math together without discussing the math because they had been running math together for long enough that the discussion was not required.
At the midpoint of the first day's movement, Chae-won: *"He's going to be all right."*
*"Yes,"* Min-woo said.
*"He's been making the choice for thirty-four days. He knows how."*
*"Yes."*
*"We'll find him on the other side."*
*"Yes."* He paused. *"He said both of us."*
She looked at him. The expression he was still learning to describe. *"Then let's make sure there is an other side,"* she said.
They kept moving.
The correction mechanism was behind them.
The Narrative Lock was ahead.
The scriptless zone was around them, being what it was — the part of the world that existed because they were in it, the part that had not been written and was writing itself while they walked through it, the part that was entirely theirs.
