The first Easter Egg had been the medical supplies.
Min-woo had written them into the screenplay as a worldbuilding detail — a line about the Finance Center maintaining emergency medical stockpiles per corporate liability requirements, tucked into the scene description to give the base location texture and practical logic. He had not thought about it again after writing it. He had written hundreds of such details across dozens of scripts, the small specifics that made fictional worlds feel inhabited, and he had never expected to need any of them.
The stockpile was exactly where he had put it: a locked supply room on the fourth floor, behind a maintenance corridor that was not on the building's official floor plan because it had been added during a renovation that predated the current management. He found it by knowing it was there. He told the group he had found it by checking the building's maintenance logs, which he had claimed to discover in the facilities management office.
There were no logs. He had not been to the facilities office.
No one asked to see the logs. People who needed medical supplies badly enough did not tend to audit the provenance of medical supplies.
The second Easter Egg was the emergency communications equipment on the sixth floor — again, a detail he had written for texture, a minor plot convenience he had included in case the script needed a communications thread in the second act. He found it the same way. Told the same kind of partial truth.
The third Easter Egg was the food storage.
---
He had been watching Chae-won watch him.
This was the thing about situational awareness developed through years of observing people across a writing desk: you learned to track the watchers as well as the watched. Chae-won had a particular way of cataloging information — a slight shift in her posture when she was actively filing something, a quality of stillness that was different from her resting stillness, more deliberate and directed. He had seen it in the corridor after the creature. He had seen it three times in the last two days.
Each time, he had been finding something.
She had not said anything about this. She was building a file. He was watching her build it and adjusting accordingly — finding slightly different routes to each resource, varying the reasoning he offered, making sure each explanation had enough internal logic to be plausible without being airtight. The way you wrote a mystery where the audience could solve it if they were paying close attention but most wouldn't be.
Chae-won was paying close attention.
So when she found him alone on the fourth floor and said *"How do you keep finding these?"* the question was already three Easter Eggs deep, and both of them knew it.
*"Pattern recognition,"* Min-woo said. He was standing at the window at the end of the maintenance corridor, looking at the minimap data the Director's Cut was feeding him about the day's creature movements. Not looking at her. *"Corporate emergency facilities have standard configurations. Once you understand the template, the variations become predictable."*
*"You've consulted for corporate facilities management?"*
*"I've written about it."*
*"In a screenplay."*
*"Research doesn't stop being valid because the medium changes."*
She was quiet for a moment. He could feel the quality of the silence — she was deciding something, he thought. Whether to push further or to accept the explanation and wait for more data.
*"The medical stockpile was in an undocumented storage room,"* she said. *"Standard corporate emergency configurations don't typically include undocumented storage rooms."*
*"They don't document them because they're liability concerns. That doesn't mean they don't exist."*
Another silence. He turned from the window and found her looking at him with the expression he was beginning to recognize: not suspicion exactly, something more precise. The look of someone who knows they're being managed and is deciding whether the management is working for or against them.
*"You're very good at this,"* she said.
*"At finding storage rooms?"*
*"At explaining things."* A pause. *"The explanations are always just plausible enough."*
Min-woo looked at her. *"Do you want me to stop finding things?"*
She held his gaze. *"No."* Another pause. *"I want you to tell me when you find something that I should know about before you decide whether to tell the group."*
This was, he recognized, a negotiation. She was not asking for honesty — she understood, on some level, that complete honesty was not currently on offer. She was asking for partnership. For the specific trust arrangement of two people who both know something is being withheld and agree to operate within that constraint rather than outside it.
*"Agreed,"* he said.
She nodded. The negotiation closed. They both understood what had been agreed to and what had not, and neither of them named the gap between the two.
---
The third Easter Egg was the problem.
He found it in the afternoon — the Director's Cut flagging a location three floors up in a section of the Finance Center that abutted a dungeon-transformed alley, the kind of marginal space where the boundary between the building and the dungeon world was thinner than elsewhere. The scene panel populated as he approached:
**EASTER EGG LOCATION: FINANCE CENTER, FL. 7, ROOM 714** **Contents: Emergency food storage — sufficient for 14 days, full group** **Note: Location adjacent to TRIGGER ZONE. NPC-047 death flag probability in this zone: 70%.**
He stood in the corridor and read the note.
Seventy percent. He had written the trigger zones as dungeon mechanics — areas of concentrated narrative energy where the story's original trajectories exerted pressure on the real, where the script's logic tried to reassert itself. He had not expected them to have a probability attached. He had not expected the probability to be that specific or that high.
He opened the scene breakdown for the trigger zone:
**TRIGGER ZONE TYPE: NPC DEATH FLAG — ACTIVE** **Mechanism: Elite creature encounter, unscheduled** **Purpose: Narrative correction. NPC-047 was not intended to reach this point in the story.**
Narrative correction. The script was trying to fix its own errors. He was the error.
Min-woo stood in the corridor outside room 714 for approximately ninety seconds, doing the math.
The food storage was real. The group needed it — their current supplies would last four more days, and the next secure resupply opportunity according to the screenplay was a week out. Without this cache, the group would face a resource crisis at exactly the moment the Gyeongbok Palace dungeon gate opened and everything became significantly more dangerous.
Chae-won needed the cache. The group needed the cache. The screenplay needed them to have the cache to maintain the narrative momentum of the second act.
He was the only one who knew where it was.
And the trigger zone had a seventy percent probability of killing him.
Min-woo thought about this for another thirty seconds.
Then he opened the door to room 714.
---
The elite creature was not in the description he had written for the trigger zone, because he had not written the trigger zone with enough specificity to include creature types. This turned out to be relevant.
It was larger than the boss from chapter three and moved differently — less the aggressive directional force of the street encounter, more the terrible patience of something that had been waiting in a small space for a long time and had learned, in that waiting, not to waste motion. It registered his presence with a rotation of its upper section that reminded him, uncomfortably, of a camera finding its subject.
**NPC DEATH FLAG: ACTIVE** **Current probability: 70%**
The Director's Cut was running at full capacity — Editing Mind calculating approach vectors, minimap tracking the creature's movement signatures, the full toolkit of foreknowledge and manipulation arranged in his peripheral vision like notes on a page. He had three seconds, renewable once before the overload warning escalated to a critical threshold.
Three seconds was enough to understand the room.
The storage cache was in a metal shelving unit along the left wall — everything he had written into it, two weeks of food for twelve people, real and solid and there. The creature was between him and the door. The room had one window, too small to exit through. The door had a lock he could reach if he could get past the creature.
Not possible in a direct approach.
Possible if he moved correctly, precisely, using the three seconds plus the creature's own momentum against it in a way that required him to be in exactly the place the creature would strike at the moment he activated the movement. The probability difference between the correct sequence and any other sequence was the difference between forty percent injury likelihood and ninety percent.
He was already moving before he consciously decided to move.
The three seconds stretched around him — the creature's strike telegraphed, the gap in its approach visible, the path to the door a bright line through the geometry of the encounter. He took the path. The creature's strike hit the shelving unit. Two cans of emergency rations hit the floor and rolled. He hit the door frame with his shoulder, hard enough to feel it, but got through, and the door locked behind him with a click that sounded very loud in the corridor.
The creature hit the door once, from the other side.
Then nothing.
Min-woo leaned against the wall opposite the door and took three breaths and looked at his hands. One cut on the right palm from the door frame edge. The sleeve of his jacket had a tear at the shoulder he had not noticed acquiring. His shoulder would bruise significantly by morning.
The cache was still in the room. He could not get it out alone.
He had the location. He had the lock code. He had a creature-clearing problem and three people in the group with the combat capability to solve it, none of whom knew why they were clearing room 714 in a section of the building he had told them earlier was structurally questionable.
He had acquired this information at a seventy percent death probability.
He thought about whether that had been a wise use of resources.
He thought about the group's supplies lasting four more days.
He thought about Chae-won standing at the food court entrance distributing rations with the specific care of someone making sure everyone was fed before she considered whether she was hungry.
He stopped thinking about whether it had been wise.
---
He found Chae-won in the stairwell between three and four, on her way up to check the sixth-floor perimeter.
He had planned to give her the location and the code and a clean tactical briefing. This was what he had decided on the walk back from the trigger zone: clean transfer of information, no unnecessary context, maintain the established pattern of useful-stranger-who-finds-things.
What actually happened was that he came around the turn of the stairwell, and she looked at him, and her eyes went immediately to the tear at his shoulder and the cut on his palm, and she did not say *what happened* or *are you hurt.* She said:
*"What did it cost?"*
Min-woo looked at her. The question was precise. She was not asking about the injury — she was asking about what he had paid for whatever he was about to tell her. She already knew he was about to tell her something. She already knew it had cost him something to get it.
*"I found the food storage,"* he said. *"Enough for two weeks. Room 714 on seven. There's a creature that needs clearing before we can access it."*
*"How bad?"*
*"Elite class. Single target. Three of us can handle it if we approach from the east side of the room."*
She was still looking at the tear on his shoulder. *"You went in alone."*
*"I needed to confirm the location."*
*"You could have sent someone with combat capability."*
*"I found it. I assessed it. The briefing is more accurate for it."*
She was quiet for a moment. Then she turned to continue up the stairs, and as she passed him — close, in the narrow stairwell — she reached out and took hold of his right wrist, briefly, with two fingers, the gesture of someone checking a pulse or marking a location. Not a grip. Just a touch, two seconds, deliberate.
Then she let go and continued up.
*"Brief me on the approach vectors when we reach four,"* she said, without turning back.
Min-woo stood in the stairwell and looked at his wrist.
The Affection Gauge appeared in his peripheral vision. He closed it before it populated.
---
The creature in room 714 took six minutes and four seconds to clear. Chae-won led the team with the clean efficiency of someone who had processed the approach briefing as a complete architecture and was now building within it, and Min-woo stood at the door and watched and thought about the difference between knowing what someone would do and understanding why they did it.
Afterward, when the cache was confirmed and the team was beginning the logistics of moving two weeks of supplies to the food court level, Chae-won found him at the window at the end of the seventh-floor corridor — the same window he had been standing at before, looking at the wrong sky.
She sat down on the floor beside where he was standing, her back against the wall, with the ease of someone who had decided that formality was not a useful expenditure of energy.
*"Sit down,"* she said. *"You're going to be standing on that shoulder for the next hour and you shouldn't."*
He sat down.
They were silent for a moment — the particular silence that had been developing between them, the one that was becoming less uncomfortable each time.
*"The shoulder will be fine,"* he said.
*"I know. Sit down anyway."*
He did not examine whether he sat because she was right about the shoulder or for some other reason. He sat and looked at the wrong sky through the cracked window and thought about the cache they now had and the four days they had bought and the seventy percent that had become something else.
*"Thank you,"* he said. He meant it for the creature clearance. For the team she had brought up.
*"You knew where it was,"* she said. *"We just opened the door."*
*"That was the hard part."*
Another silence. Then, from her, without preamble: *"I had a brother who used to do things like that. Go into spaces alone to confirm something before asking for help. He said it was efficiency."* A pause. *"It wasn't efficiency."*
Min-woo looked at her. She was looking at the window, not at him.
*"What was it?"* he asked.
She was quiet for a moment. *"He didn't want to ask unless he knew for certain it was worth asking."* A pause. *"He didn't want to cost people effort for something that might not be there."*
Min-woo did not respond immediately. He sat with the observation, which was accurate in a way that required him to either deflect or acknowledge, and he was tired enough that deflection required more energy than he had.
*"The cache was real,"* he said, finally.
*"Yes,"* she said. *"It was."*
The wrong sky did what the wrong sky did, which was to be wrong in ways that were becoming familiar, and they sat in the fading afternoon light until the supply team called from the stairwell that they needed help moving the heavier crates, and they both stood and went to help, and Min-woo's shoulder did hurt, and he did not mention it, and Chae-won did not point it out again, and neither of these things were accidents.
Later, going through his jacket for a pen to update the supply list, he found that someone had tucked a square of medical gauze into his left pocket — folded once, just the right size for a palm cut. No note. No acknowledgment.
He used it.
The Affection Gauge activated briefly in his peripheral vision and he let it run for four seconds before closing it, and in those four seconds the reading was not UNKNOWN and not RECALIBRATING and he did not let himself look long enough to read it completely, but he noted that it was a number, and that the number was moving, and that it was moving upward.
He closed it.
He finished updating the supply list.
He told himself, with the conviction of someone who knew exactly what they were telling themselves, that he had not looked.
You've reached the end of this chapter
