The morning after their conversation in the courtyard carried a different quality between them than any that had come before it -- not quite ease, not entirely settled, but marked by the particular tenderness of two people who had traded something fragile and had not yet decided how to hold it in daylight.
Valeria noticed it first in the small things. Alaric's hand finding the small of her back as they passed through a doorway together, a gesture so natural he seemed barely aware he'd made it. The way he lingered at breakfast rather than rushing immediately to his correspondence, as though the letters could wait a few minutes longer than they once had. She noticed, too, her own instinct to lean into these small changes rather than catalogue them with her usual wary distance, and found the shift unsettling in a way she chose, for once, not to examine too closely.
There was, she thought, watching him across the table one such morning, something almost unbearably ordinary about the way their days had begun to unfold -- a rhythm built not on survival or negotiation, but on the simple, accumulated habit of choosing each other's company again and again, without any particular ceremony attached to the choosing. She had spent twelve years believing ordinary happiness belonged exclusively to people who had never learned what she had learned about the world's true architecture. She found herself, these mornings, increasingly unwilling to accept that belief without further argument.
She did not raise the subject of Lyra again. She had meant what she told him in the courtyard -- some wounds deserved their own timeline, and she had spent enough of her own life having her history extracted before she was ready to offer it freely to ever inflict that particular violence on someone else. But she noticed him watching her sometimes, in quiet moments, with an expression that suggested he was turning the unfinished confession over in his own mind regardless, weighing when and how to finish what he had started.
The peace between them did not go entirely unchallenged. She found Malakor waiting near the library on the third morning after the confrontation over her blood samples, his posture carrying a deference so careful it read almost as performance.
"A word, if you have a moment, Lady Valeria." He fell into step beside her as she continued toward the training yard, apparently undeterred by her lack of invitation. "I wished to express, formally, my regret regarding the misunderstanding over the samples. I hope it hasn't damaged our working relationship beyond repair."
"I wasn't aware we had a working relationship, Malakor. I was aware you'd been documenting my body without my consent for weeks."
"A fair correction." Something flickered behind his careful expression -- not quite offense, but close enough to it that she filed the reaction away with her usual precision. "I only meant to say that my interest in understanding the mechanism of your blood remains, at its core, in service of his lordship's welfare. I would hope that shared goal might eventually bridge whatever distance currently exists between us."
"Our goals may align in outcome, Malakor. I remain considerably less convinced they align in method." She held his gaze, unblinking. "I don't distrust your desire to help him. I distrust your willingness to justify almost anything in service of that desire, including violating the boundaries of the person whose body actually makes his survival possible."
Something in his expression tightened, and for the first time since she had known him, she saw a flicker of genuine frustration break through his careful composure. "You speak as though my research is some indulgence, Lady Valeria, rather than the only meaningful progress anyone has made toward understanding this curse in six years of his lordship's suffering."
"I speak as though my body is not a laboratory you're entitled to access simply because your intentions happen to be scientific rather than cruel." She stopped walking, turning to face him fully. "I understand you believe your work matters more than my comfort with how it's conducted. I would ask you to understand, in turn, that I have spent twelve years having exactly that belief used to justify everything done to me. I won't accept it again, regardless of how noble the reasoning sounds when you explain it."
Malakor said nothing for a long moment, and when he finally spoke, his voice had lost some of its careful diplomacy. "Then I hope, Lady Valeria, that your caution doesn't someday cost his lordship a cure that might have been found sooner, had you been willing to extend the same trust to my research that you've apparently extended to everything else in this citadel."
He left before she could answer, and Valeria stood alone in the corridor for a long moment, turning the exchange over with the same careful attention she gave every threat, unsettled less by his obvious frustration than by the small, uncomfortable seed of doubt his final words had planted. She did not believe Malakor's methods justified his ends. She found herself considerably less certain, standing there in the quiet corridor, that his underlying accusation carried no truth at all.
*
She raised the encounter with Kaelen later that afternoon, finding him in the training yard as she often did now, drilling a fresh cohort of recruits through the same patient, relentless forms he had used on every group before them.
"Malakor thinks I'm obstructing his research," she said, once the recruits had been dismissed for their midday rest. "He suggested, rather pointedly, that my caution might cost Alaric a cure that could otherwise be found."
Kaelen's expression sharpened. "He said this to you directly?"
"He did. I don't believe he intended it as a threat, precisely. I believe he genuinely thinks his work matters more than the method by which he conducts it." She studied Kaelen carefully, curious how the captain -- once her most vocal skeptic, now something closer to a cautious ally -- would weigh the accusation. "I wanted your judgment on it. You've watched him longer than I have. Is there any truth to what he's suggesting?"
Kaelen considered the question with visible care before answering, the same deliberate honesty she had come to respect in him. "Malakor is brilliant, and genuinely devoted to finding a cure for his lordship's condition. I don't doubt either of those things. But I've also watched him, over eleven years, gradually lose the ability to distinguish between what serves his lordship and what serves his own curiosity. The two used to align more cleanly, in the early years. I'm not certain they align quite so neatly anymore."
"You believe he's grown dangerous."
"I believe he's grown convinced of his own righteousness, which is often more dangerous than simple malice, because a man convinced of his own goodness rarely questions the harm he causes along the way." Kaelen wiped the sweat from his brow, studying her with something that had, over these past weeks, settled fully into respect rather than suspicion. "I don't think you're wrong to distrust his methods, Lady Valeria. I simply think you should be prepared for him to continue pushing at the boundaries you've set, in ways subtle enough that you may not always notice until the damage is already done."
"You sound as though you've watched this pattern before."
"I have. Not with you -- with his lordship, in the early years of the curse, before he'd learned to set firm boundaries of his own." Something grim settled into Kaelen's expression. "Malakor convinced him, in those first months, to try compounds no sane physician would have risked on a man already fighting for his life. He argued, each time, that the potential benefit outweighed the risk, and each time, his lordship was too desperate for relief to argue the point. It took nearly two years before he learned to distrust that particular calculation, and even then, I'm not certain he ever fully forgave himself for how much damage those early experiments caused before he found the strength to refuse them."
The revelation settled uncomfortably in Valeria's chest, a fresh layer of understanding about exactly what kind of man Alaric had needed to become in order to survive his own citadel, let alone his own curse. "He's never mentioned any of this to me."
"I doubt he would. There's very little dignity in those particular memories, and his lordship has spent considerable effort building a version of himself capable of forgetting them entirely." Kaelen's gaze softened, just slightly, the careful neutrality of a soldier giving way to something closer to genuine warmth. "I tell you this not to alarm you, Lady Valeria, but because I think you deserve to understand the full weight of what you're helping him carry. He has survived a great deal more than the curse alone. I suspect you're one of the very few people who has ever earned the right to know that."
The warning settled uncomfortably in her chest, and she found herself, walking back toward the citadel's main hall that evening, watching the corridors with a fresh layer of vigilance she had not needed in weeks.
*
That evening, once the day's business had cleared and the fire in the private study had burned down to its familiar low glow, Alaric found her still turning the day's conversations over in her mind, and something in her expression must have betrayed the weight of it, because he crossed the room and settled into the chair beside hers rather than across from her, close enough that his shoulder brushed hers when he sat.
"You've been quiet all evening."
"Malakor and I had words this morning. Kaelen and I had different words this afternoon. Between the two, I've spent most of the day recalibrating exactly how much trust I'm willing to extend to the people in this citadel who claim to want your welfare above all else." She turned to study him. "You asked me something once, weeks ago. What I never say. I find I have a question of my own tonight, if you're willing to answer it honestly."
"Ask it."
"What happened to you, growing up, before Cedric. Not the political history. You." She held his gaze steadily. "I've learned a great deal about the wounds this citadel has inflicted on you. I find I know very little about who you were before any of them existed."
Something in his expression shifted, surprised by the direction of the question, and for a long moment he said nothing, simply studying her in the low firelight as though recalibrating what he was willing to offer.
"I was a quiet child," he said finally, slowly, as though excavating something buried deep enough that the words came reluctantly. "Before the border campaigns, before the crown's expectations settled onto my shoulders, I spent most of my time in the citadel's old library, reading histories no one else particularly cared about. My mother used to find me there for hours, curled into the window seat with some ancient chronicle, and she'd bring me tea and simply sit with me, not speaking, content to let me disappear into whatever century I'd wandered into that day."
"That doesn't sound like the man everyone in this citadel fears."
"No. It doesn't, does it." A ghost of something almost wistful crossed his face. "I don't know precisely when that boy disappeared. I suspect it happened gradually enough that I never noticed the exact moment of the loss, the way a candle burns down without announcing when it finally gutters out. Between my parents' deaths, and the border campaigns, and eventually the curse itself, there simply wasn't room left for a boy who preferred old histories to sword forms."
Valeria studied him for a long moment, something tender and unfamiliar moving through her chest. "I would like to meet that boy someday. If any part of him still exists beneath everything Cedric and the curse have layered over him."
Something in Alaric's expression cracked open at that, unguarded in a way she had rarely seen from him even in their most private moments. "I find," he said quietly, "that some part of him has begun reappearing, these past weeks. I hadn't fully noticed it myself until you asked."
He reached for her hand in the firelight, and she let him take it, the gesture as natural now as breathing, and for a long while neither of them spoke further, simply sitting together in the quiet warmth of a fire and a fragile, growing trust neither of them had expected to find inside a fortress built around fear.
"Tell me something else," she said eventually, unwilling to let the evening's tenderness fade entirely into silence. "Not about the boy who read in the library window. About the man you might have become, if Cedric had never poisoned that cup. If none of this had ever happened to you."
Alaric considered the question for a long moment, his thumb tracing an absent pattern along the back of her hand. "I've asked myself that question a thousand times over the years, and I confess I've never arrived at a satisfying answer. I suspect I would have married eventually, taken some minor political alliance the crown found useful, spent my days managing border disputes and half-forgotten trade agreements. A comfortable life, likely. An unremarkable one, in the grand scope of history." Something wry touched his voice. "I don't know that I would have thanked anyone for that particular fate, if I'm entirely honest. There was ambition in me too, before the curse burned most of it away. I wanted to matter, in whatever narrow way a second son of a border lord could hope to matter."
"You matter now. More than you would have, I suspect, in that unremarkable life you're describing."
"Perhaps. Though I confess the currency I've earned that mattering in has cost considerably more than I would have willingly paid, given the choice." He turned to look at her fully, something raw and searching in his gaze. "What of you? Before the Crimson Empire took you. Do you remember anything of who you might have become, if your parents had never sold you?"
Valeria was quiet for a long moment, the question settling into old, careful territory she rarely allowed herself to visit. "Fragments, mostly. I remember my mother's hands, before they released mine outside that door. I remember the smell of bread baking in our small kitchen, though I couldn't tell you now what kind of bread, or what our kitchen actually looked like beyond that single sensory thread." She studied the fire rather than his face, the old defensive habit of avoiding eye contact during vulnerability surfacing despite how far she had already come with him. "I don't allow myself to imagine the alternate life very often. It never seemed a useful exercise, dwelling on a version of myself who never had to learn what I learned. That girl doesn't exist. I stopped mourning her a long time ago."
"Perhaps she exists more than you allow yourself to believe," Alaric said quietly. "I see glimpses of her sometimes, in the way you laugh when you think no one's paying close enough attention, or the careful gentleness you show the stable cats despite claiming you have no particular fondness for animals. I don't think twelve years of captivity erased her entirely, Valeria. I think she simply learned to hide more thoroughly than most."
Something in Valeria's chest tightened at the observation, unexpectedly moved by the idea that some remnant of the child she barely remembered might have survived intact beneath everything the Crimson Empire had done to bury her. "That's a kinder assessment than I've ever offered myself."
"Then allow me to offer it in your stead, until you're ready to believe it fully on your own." He lifted her hand and pressed his lips gently to her knuckles, the gesture unhurried, carrying none of the desperate urgency of their first true contact in the cell weeks earlier, only a quiet, deliberate tenderness that asked nothing beyond permission to exist. "I find I have a great deal of patience for that particular project, whenever you're ready to let me help."
Outside, the wind had settled into the low, steady murmur that had become the citadel's constant winter companion, and Valeria sat in the firelight with her hand still held in his, feeling, for the first time in longer than she could clearly remember, the strange and fragile sensation of being fully seen by someone who had chosen, deliberately and repeatedly, to look past every defense she had ever built and find something worth staying for regardless.
She thought, in that quiet moment, of every version of herself she had constructed over twelve years of survival -- the vessel, the specimen, the Venom-Bound, each identity layered carefully over whatever fragile girl had once existed before the iron door closed behind her. She had believed, for so long, that those layers were the whole of her now, that nothing genuine remained beneath them worth uncovering. Sitting here, in the low firelight with Alaric's thumb still tracing slow patterns against her knuckles, she found herself considering, for the first time in years, that perhaps he was right -- that some quieter, more essential version of her had simply been waiting, patiently, for someone willing to look past the armor long enough to notice she was still there.
"Thank you," she said finally, the words feeling smaller than what she meant by them, though she suspected he understood the full weight regardless.
"For what?"
"For asking about the boy who read books in the library window, instead of only the tyrant everyone else sees. For believing there might still be a girl underneath everything the Crimson Empire built on top of her." She turned to look at him fully. "No one has ever bothered asking me that question before, Alaric. I didn't realize how much I needed someone to ask it until you did."
Something in his expression softened further, and he lifted her hand once more, pressing another slow kiss to her knuckles, unhurried and deliberate. "Then I intend to keep asking, for as long as you'll let me," he said quietly. "I find I have grown rather invested in learning every version of you that survived long enough to still be standing here beside me tonight."
