Zoey noticed it before she was even fully awake — the particular, blissful absence of sound that had, for the past two weeks, become the ambient soundtrack to her mornings. No drip. No slow, maddening plink of water hitting the bottom of a half-full sink.
She padded into the kitchen still half-asleep, turned the faucet on out of habit, watched the water run clean and steady with no lingering trickle afterward, and stood there for a long moment in genuine, bewildered silence.
"Huh," she said, to no one.
She hadn't called a plumber. She hadn't called the building manager, not officially — she'd meant to, had even added it to a list of things to handle this week, right below finish outline and above stop thinking about Leo so much, a list that had, admittedly, not seen much progress on any front.
She texted the building's maintenance line first, a short, confused inquiry about whether anyone had come by. The response came back within the hour: no work orders on file for her unit. No one had been sent.
Which left, by process of elimination, exactly one person who had both a key and a habit of doing things without mentioning them first.
She found him in the hallway that evening, coming back from the studio, sleeves still faintly dusted with something pale and clay-colored, and she planted herself directly in his path with the particular firmness of a woman who had prepared a speech and intended to deliver it.
"Did you fix my sink?"
Leo blinked, clearly not expecting to be interrogated in the hallway before he'd even made it through his own door. "Your — oh. The faucet thing?"
"You didn't have to do that."
"I mean, technically I didn't have to do a lot of things," he said, with the kind of easy shrug that suggested this wasn't, to him, a particularly significant admission. "You mentioned it was annoying you a while back. I had a wrench. Figured I'd just take care of it while you were out."
"You used the spare key to come into my apartment and fix my sink," Zoey repeated, slowly, as though saying it out loud might reveal some hidden logic she was missing.
"When you say it like that it sounds a lot more dramatic," Leo said, laughing a little, though something in his expression suggested he was beginning to wonder if he'd overstepped. "Sorry — was that weird? I genuinely didn't think about it being weird. I just didn't want you dealing with a landlord who takes three weeks to reply to anything."
"It's not weird," Zoey said, though it felt, standing there, entirely weird — not because of what he'd done, but because she had absolutely no framework for processing an act of kindness that came with no visible strings attached, no favor being called in, no motive she could file neatly into a case. "I just don't — why would you do that?"
Leo looked at her for a moment, something soft and slightly confused in his expression, like the question itself didn't quite make sense to him. "Because it was bothering you," he said simply. "And I could fix it. That's — that's kind of the whole reason, honestly."
He said it so plainly, so entirely without agenda, that Zoey found she had no follow-up question prepared, no next line in the interrogation she'd rehearsed. She simply stood there in the hallway, faintly unbalanced, while Leo gave her a small, easy wave and let himself into his own apartment, leaving her with nothing but the disorienting sensation of having been thoroughly, harmlessly disarmed.
It happened again three days later.
She found the bag hanging from her doorknob when she came home from a wasted afternoon at a coffee shop, staring at a blinking cursor and accomplishing nothing except an extremely thorough review of her own inadequacy as a novelist. Inside: a small paper sack from the bakery two streets over, containing exactly the pastry she'd mentioned liking in passing weeks ago — the almond one, the kind with the slightly burnt sugar top she'd complained, once, was impossible to find anywhere convenient.
No note. No text announcing it. Just the bag, warm still from the oven, hanging there like it had appeared out of nowhere.
Zoey stood in her hallway holding it for a long moment, feeling something in her chest do an uncomfortable, unfamiliar thing.
She carried it inside, set it on her counter, and sat down across from it like it might, if stared at long enough, reveal some hidden mechanism.
"This doesn't make sense," she told the pastry. "People don't just do things for no reason."
She thought, unbidden, of every villain she'd ever written — the charming ones especially, the ones who did small, thoughtful things precisely because it made their victims trust them faster, precisely because kindness with no visible motive was the most disarming kind there was. It was, she reminded herself, an established, well-documented tactic. Manipulators didn't announce themselves. They fixed your sink. They remembered your favorite pastry. They made you feel safe, right up until the moment they didn't.
She wrote this down, in the small black notebook, with the shaky conviction of someone trying very hard to believe her own logic. Subject continues pattern of unexplained generosity. No demands made in return. Possible interpretation: grooming behavior, establishing trust for later exploitation.
She read the sentence back and felt, immediately, faintly ill.
It didn't fit. Nothing about the last three weeks fit that theory anymore — not the tired slump of his shoulders after Marcus's visit, not the genuine warmth in his voice when he talked about his cat, not the easy, uncomplicated way he'd shrugged off fixing her sink like it wasn't even worth mentioning. Manipulators, in her professional and increasingly conflicted opinion, did not typically look quite that surprised when someone thanked them.
She crossed the sentence out. She sat there for a while longer, pen hovering over the page, trying to find some other explanation that felt more comfortable than the one slowly, stubbornly asserting itself.
She knocked on his door instead of writing anything else.
"Hey," Leo said, opening it, looking faintly surprised to see her standing there with the now-empty pastry bag still clutched in one hand. "Everything okay?"
"Why do you do this?" Zoey asked, and heard, in her own voice, something rawer than she meant to let show. "The sink. The bakery thing. You don't — you don't leave notes, you don't say anything, you just do it and then act like it's nothing."
Leo looked at her for a moment, something in his expression shifting into a kind of careful, quiet honesty she hadn't seen from him before. "I don't know," he said finally. "I guess I just — like doing things for people I care about. Doesn't feel like it needs a reason."
"But there has to be a reason," Zoey pressed, and heard, distantly, how strange the words sounded coming out of her mouth — like she was arguing against being cared for, like some part of her genuinely needed there to be a catch.
"Does there?" Leo asked, gently, leaning against his doorframe, watching her with an expression she couldn't quite read. "I don't know. Maybe I just like the idea of you not having to deal with a leaky faucet. Or not having to go three streets over for something sweet after a bad writing day. It's not — it's not a strategy, Zoey. I'm not trying to get anything out of it."
The use of her name — soft, unhurried, like it belonged naturally in his mouth — landed somewhere in Zoey's chest with more force than the sentence around it warranted.
"Okay," she said, quietly, because she didn't have anything else to say, because the honest, simple answer he'd given her didn't fit into any case file, didn't map onto any theory she'd built, and left her standing there in the hallway with absolutely nothing to write down except the growing, unmanageable feeling that she had badly, thoroughly misjudged what kind of story she was actually living inside of.
"You good?" Leo asked, softer now, some of the earlier confusion replaced with something more careful, more attentive.
"Yeah," Zoey said, and even managed something close to a real smile. "Thanks. For the pastry. And the sink."
"Anytime," Leo said, and the word settled over her exactly the way it had the first time he'd said it — warm, uncomplicated, entirely too easy to believe.
She sat at her desk that night for a long time before she opened the notebook again. When she finally did, she didn't write anything about motives, or evidence, or possible manipulation tactics.
She wrote, instead, in small, careful handwriting: No discernible motive found. Possibly this isn't a problem that needs solving.
She stared at the sentence for a long time.
Then, very quietly, she closed the notebook, turned off her desk lamp, and sat in the dark for a while, watching the warm light spill from Leo's window across the street, feeling something in her chest settle into a shape she didn't yet have language for, and wasn't at all sure she was ready to name.
