The email felt, at the time she sent it, like a genuine accomplishment.
Three chapters. Actual, complete chapters, delivered a full two days before the extended deadline, containing what Zoey had been quietly assuring herself for the past week was some of her darkest, most psychologically rigorous work yet — a serial killer novel with real teeth, the kind of book that would finally silence any lingering doubt about whether she belonged in the genre she'd built her entire career on.
The phone call came less than twenty-four hours later.
"Zoey." Her editor's voice carried a particular note Zoey had learned, over the years, to recognize as trouble — not anger, exactly, but the careful, bewildered tone of someone trying to work out how to phrase a question without insulting the person on the other end. "I read the chapters."
"Great," Zoey said, with the false brightness of someone who suspected, somewhere in the pit of her stomach, that great was not the word about to follow.
"So." A pause. "Chapter fourteen. The one where your antagonist — the suspected killer, the one with the notebook — he fixes the protagonist's leaky faucet."
Zoey went very still. "Yes."
"Without telling her. Using a spare key. And then leaves a pastry on her doorknob a few days later. Anonymously."
"It's — character development," Zoey said, with the specific desperation of someone realizing, in real time, exactly how badly she'd miscalculated. "It shows his — his methodical nature. His attention to detail. Serial killers are often meticulous, it's a — it's a known thing."
"Zoey, he also made her a hedgehog out of clay."
"That's—" Zoey opened her mouth. Closed it. "That's symbolic."
"Symbolic of what, exactly? Because reading it, it genuinely just seems like he's falling for her. Extremely tenderly. There's an entire paragraph about the specific detail he put into her spines, and how it made her feel 'truly seen.' Zoey, this is not the tone of a serial killer thriller. This reads like a rom-com."
Zoey pulled the phone away from her ear for a moment, staring at it as though the device itself might offer some kind of explanation for what she'd apparently done, entirely without noticing, over the past several weeks of drafting.
"I can revise it," she said, weakly, phone back at her ear. "I'll add more — menace. More darkness."
"I'm not saying it's bad," her editor said, more gently now, and this, somehow, was worse than if she'd simply criticized the pages outright. "It's actually — it's some of the warmest writing I've seen from you, honestly. It just isn't what we agreed on. Whispers in the Dark was supposed to be grim. Visceral. And instead I'm reading a scene where the suspected murderer tucks a blanket around the heroine because she fell asleep on his couch." A pause, and when she spoke again, her voice had shifted into something more curious than critical. "Is something going on with you? Because I've edited a lot of your books, and I've never seen you write anything this — soft."
Zoey didn't answer right away.
"I have some things to think about," she said finally, which was, at minimum, honest. "I'll send a revision by next week."
She ended the call and sat very still at her desk for a long moment, phone still warm in her hand, before she made herself open the document again and actually read back through what she'd written — not skimming for typos, the way she usually did, but reading it the way a stranger might, without the six weeks of context that made every scene feel, from the inside, perfectly reasonable.
It was, she realized with mounting horror, exactly what her editor had said.
The scene with the faucet was, almost word for word, the conversation she and Leo had actually had in the hallway. The pastry scene was lifted so directly from memory that she'd even kept the specific detail about the almond filling. And the hedgehog — God, the hedgehog scene — she'd transcribed nearly the entire exchange from Leo's workshop, changing only the character names, leaving in even the small, specific joke about spines and strawberries that had made her laugh out loud at the time.
She kept scrolling, and the deeper into the manuscript she went, the more the pattern revealed itself with a clarity she couldn't unsee: every scene meant to establish suspicion had been quietly, steadily displaced by scenes of care. The antagonist's supposed menace had softened, chapter by chapter, into something closer to devotion. The protagonist's fear had transformed, almost invisibly, into something that read — she made herself admit it, staring at her own words on the screen — a great deal like falling in love.
She had set out, weeks ago, to write a book about a woman investigating a dangerous man.
She had, apparently, without ever quite deciding to, written a book about a woman falling for a good one.
Zoey sat back in her chair, staring at the ceiling, feeling something in her chest crack open in a way that had nothing to do with the deadline pressure that had started this whole absurd chain of events.
This is not fiction anymore, she thought, with a kind of dazed, uncomfortable clarity. This is just — my life, with the names changed.
She thought about the hedgehog on Leo's shelf, spines fierce, paws wrapped soft around something sweet. She thought about the rabbit with the cracked magnifying glass. She thought about every small, patient, unglamorous act of kindness he'd shown her over the past two months — the faucet, the pastries, the way he'd waited, without complaint, for her to catch up to something he'd apparently already understood about both of them weeks ago.
She had been so afraid, for so long, of writing something too soft, too sentimental, too far from the sharp, suspicious voice she'd built her entire identity around. And here it was anyway, spilling out of her regardless, page after page, a love story disguised so thinly as a thriller that even her own editor had seen straight through it in a single read.
She closed the laptop gently, sat with her hands folded in her lap for a long moment, and allowed herself, finally, to ask the question she'd been avoiding since somewhere around chapter eleven.
If I keep writing this honestly — if I let the book become what it actually wants to be — am I going to end up confessing something to him before I've ever said it out loud myself?
She didn't have an answer yet.
But she noticed, sitting there in the quiet of her apartment, that the question no longer frightened her the way it would have a month ago.
If anything, some small, stubborn, hopeful part of her — the part that had spent weeks writing his kindness into every page without meaning to — was beginning to think that might not be such a terrible way for either story to end.
She spent the rest of the evening rereading the manuscript from the beginning, this time without any illusions about what she was actually looking at. By the third chapter, she found herself smiling despite the mounting dread of an editor waiting for something considerably darker than what she was prepared to deliver. By the eighth, she'd stopped pretending the softness was accidental at all.
She opened a fresh document, finally, and typed a single line at the top, more honest than anything she'd sent her editor in weeks.
Working title: I don't know what this book is anymore, but I think I finally know what it's actually about.
She didn't send that line to anyone. She simply saved it, closed the laptop, and looked out across the narrow street at the warm, familiar light glowing in Leo's window, feeling, for the first time in longer than she could remember, considerably less afraid of what she might discover if she kept being honest — on the page, and everywhere else.
