By the time Leo had fully recovered — three days later, color back in his face, the frantic edge from before finally, permanently softened into something more sustainable — the ultimatum's deadline had shrunk to a mere forty-eight hours, and the studio had buzzed back to life around him with a nervous, concentrated energy Zoey could practically feel radiating through the walls of his apartment.
He worked differently now, she noticed. Still focused, still driven, but no longer with the desperate, self-destructive edge of before — pacing himself, actually eating meals, taking the occasional break to scratch behind Mochi's ears rather than pushing through every discomfort in frantic denial.
"You look better," she told him, on the second-to-last day, watching him review a stack of finished storyboards with something closer to calm concentration than the frenzied urgency of the previous weeks.
"I feel better," Leo admitted, glancing up with a small, tired smile. "Still terrified about tomorrow, if I'm honest. But it's a manageable kind of terrified now, instead of the kind that makes me forget to eat."
"Progress," Zoey said, settling onto the stool beside his workbench with the ease of long habit. "Can I help with anything? I could read through the presentation notes, or—"
"Actually," Leo said, gently, something careful in his expression, "I think I need to do this last part on my own."
Zoey felt a small, involuntary flicker of hurt at that — an instinctive, if irrational, sting of feeling pushed away after weeks of being so thoroughly present in his crisis — but she recognized, almost as quickly as the feeling arose, exactly what he was asking for, and why it mattered.
"Okay," she said, and meant it, even as the small hurt lingered faintly beneath the understanding. "I trust you know what you need."
"It's not that I don't want your help," Leo added, seeming to sense her hesitation. "It's just — I think I need to prove this to myself. Not have someone else carry it for me, even someone as wonderful as you've been this whole time. If I'm going to actually believe I'm capable of this, I think I need to get there mostly on my own."
Something in Zoey's chest settled at the explanation, the earlier sting dissolving into something closer to quiet pride. It was, she realized, exactly the kind of boundary she'd have wanted respected herself — the difference between being loved and supported, and being rescued so thoroughly that you never got the chance to discover your own strength.
"Then I'll get out of your hair," she said, standing, pressing a soft kiss to his temple. "But I'm right across the hall if you need anything. Even just company. No pressure."
"I know," Leo said, warm and grateful. "That actually means more than you probably realize."
She spent the following day deliberately occupied — finishing another chapter of her manuscript, running errands she'd been putting off, resisting the urge to check her window every few minutes to see whether his light stayed on too late or his pace looked too frantic. It took real, conscious effort, the specific discipline of loving someone enough to let them struggle productively rather than smoothing every difficulty out of their path.
She sent one brief text in the late afternoon — thinking of you, no response needed — and received, an hour later, a simple thumbs-up emoji that told her everything she needed to know: he was working, he was managing, and he didn't need rescuing.
It was nearly nine that evening, the night before the final presentation, when a soft knock came at her door.
Leo stood there, looking tired but calmer than she'd seen him look in weeks, storyboards presumably finished and packed away somewhere across the hall.
"Hey," he said. "I know I said I needed space today. But I finished, and I—" He paused, something almost sheepish in his expression. "I just wanted to see you. Not to talk about tomorrow, necessarily. Just to be near you for a bit, before everything."
"Come in," Zoey said, stepping back, warmth flooding through her at the simple, uncomplicated request.
They didn't talk much, in the end. They sat together on her couch, Zoey's head resting against his shoulder, some quiet, undemanding show playing on the television that neither of them was really watching, and found, in the shared silence, a kind of peace that felt more valuable than any amount of conversation might have offered.
"Thank you," Leo said eventually, quiet, breaking the comfortable silence, "for knowing when to step back today. I think I really did need that. And thank you for being right here now, when I needed this instead."
"I'm learning," Zoey said, softly. "When to hold on and when to let go a little. You're a good teacher, actually, whether you meant to be or not."
Leo laughed quietly, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "Whatever happens tomorrow," he said, after a moment, his voice going more serious, "I want you to know something."
Zoey lifted her head, looking up at him, heart doing something slow and expectant in her chest.
"I've been trying to figure out the right moment to say this properly," Leo continued, something warm and a little nervous in his expression. "Not in a burning kitchen. Not while I'm feverish and half out of my mind. Somewhere it can actually land the way I want it to."
"Leo—"
"I'm not saying it right now either, actually," he said, with a small, rueful smile, gently cutting her off before she could ask. "Tomorrow's a big day, and I don't want to say something this important while half my brain is still worrying about Marcus and spreadsheets. But I wanted you to know it's coming. That I'm not going to let another smoke alarm interrupt this one."
Zoey laughed, something warm and hopeful blooming in her chest despite the slight ache of anticipation. "You're doing this on purpose now," she accused, gently. "Building suspense."
"Maybe a little," Leo admitted, grinning properly now, the exhaustion of the past weeks briefly forgotten. "But mostly I just want it to count. When I finally say it, I want you to know I mean it completely, without any distraction or crisis hanging over either of us."
"Okay," Zoey said, softer now, settling back against his shoulder, content to wait, this time without any of the old fear that had once made patience feel like a trap. "I'll hold you to that."
"Good," Leo said, quiet and warm, wrapping an arm more securely around her. "Because I fully intend to follow through."
They sat together a while longer, the television murmuring quietly in the background, both of them aware of the significant day awaiting them tomorrow, both of them equally aware of the promise now hanging, warm and certain, in the space between them.
Zoey fell asleep eventually, curled against his side, feeling more secure in this uncertain, unresolved moment than she'd felt in longer than she could remember — not because every problem had been solved, not because tomorrow's outcome was guaranteed, but because she trusted, completely now, that whatever came next, they would face it together, and that somewhere very soon, a promise several weeks in the making would finally, fully be spoken aloud.
