Zoey woke slowly, disoriented for a moment by the unfamiliar ceiling above her, before memory settled back into place — Leo's apartment, Leo's bed, the quiet, overwhelming intimacy of the previous night still humming warm beneath her skin.
She'd stayed. Not planned, not discussed in advance, simply the natural continuation of a night that had cracked something open between them too significant to end with a polite goodnight at the door.
The other side of the bed was empty, sheets still warm, and she could hear him moving around in the kitchen — the soft clatter of a pan, the low murmur of him talking to Mochi about something entirely mundane, the particular, domestic comfort of waking up to sounds that already felt familiar.
She found him at the stove, hair still sleep-mussed, humming quietly to himself while he flipped something in a pan with more enthusiasm than skill.
"Morning," he said, glancing over, something warm and slightly shy in his smile. "I attempted pancakes. Results may vary."
"Smells good," Zoey said, settling onto a stool at the counter, watching him with a quiet, contented attention that had nothing left of the careful, analytical distance she'd once maintained.
He plated two slightly uneven pancakes, set them in front of her, and then, instead of joining her at the counter, came around to stand directly in front of her, something serious settling into his expression that made her chest tighten with anticipation.
"I promised you something," he said, quiet, taking both her hands in his. "Before the presentation. I said I'd say it properly, once everything wasn't hanging over us."
Zoey's breath caught. "Leo—"
"Let me finish," he said, gently, though his voice carried a slight tremor of nerves that made the moment feel even more precious for its imperfection. "I've been in love with you for a while now, Zoey. I think — honestly, I think it might have started somewhere around the fire safety inspection in my closet, which is a deeply embarrassing origin story, but there it is."
Zoey laughed, something warm and disbelieving bubbling up through the emotion building in her chest.
"I didn't say it before because I wanted it to land right," Leo continued, softer now, more serious. "Not in a burning kitchen, not while I was feverish and barely conscious. I wanted you to hear it clearly, with nothing else competing for the space. So." He took a breath, and when he spoke again, his voice was steady, certain, carrying none of the earlier nerves. "I love you. Not because you saved me from anything, though you did, more times than I probably even realize. I love you because you're the only person who's ever seen every single part of me — the scared parts, the tired parts, the parts my own family called worthless — and instead of running, you sat down on the floor of my workshop and made me the ugliest, most wonderful little clay creature I've ever seen."
Zoey felt tears spill over before she could stop them, her chest too full for words, and found herself laughing and crying at once, overwhelmed by the simple, complete honesty of it.
"I love you too," she said, the words coming easier than she'd ever imagined they would, no fear left in them at all. "I think I have for a while too. Longer than I probably let myself admit."
Leo's face broke into a smile so open, so unguarded, that it made her chest ache with tenderness. "Yeah?"
"Yeah," Zoey confirmed, standing, closing the last small distance between them. "I love you, Leo. All of you. The clay figures and the anxious overworking and the ridiculous cat and everything else."
He kissed her then — soft at first, then deeper, one hand coming up to cradle her face with a tenderness that made her knees genuinely unsteady, and when they finally broke apart, both of them slightly breathless, foreheads resting together, Zoey felt something in her chest settle into a certainty so complete it felt almost physical.
"No smoke alarms this time," she murmured, smiling against his mouth.
"I made sure to turn the stove off first," Leo said, laughing quietly, pulling her closer. "Learned my lesson."
They stood there for a long moment, wrapped around each other in the quiet morning light, pancakes cooling forgotten on the counter, and Zoey thought, with a clarity that felt like coming home, that this — this exact, unremarkable moment, in a small kitchen with slightly burnt pancakes and a declaration months in the making — was worth every single ridiculous, terrifying step it had taken to get here.
Mochi, apparently deciding the moment had gone on long enough without his direct involvement, wound insistently around both their ankles, meowing with theatrical impatience until Leo broke away, laughing, to attend to the cat's obvious grievance about being ignored during breakfast.
"I think he's telling us to eat before the pancakes get cold," Leo said, scooping Mochi up for a brief, affectionate scratch before setting him back down.
"He's very practical," Zoey agreed, settling back onto her stool, watching Leo move around his kitchen with an ease and lightness she hadn't seen from him in weeks — the crisis with Marcus still technically unresolved, still hanging somewhere in the uncertain future, but for this morning, at least, entirely eclipsed by something far more certain and far more important.
They ate breakfast slowly, trading easy conversation and lingering touches, both of them radiating the particular, quiet happiness of two people who had finally said the thing they'd been circling for weeks, and found it landed exactly as gently, exactly as completely, as they'd both hoped.
Later, walking back to her own apartment to shower and change, Zoey found herself smiling at nothing in particular, replaying the morning in her mind — the pancakes, the declaration, the simple, unguarded I love you that had taken months of fear and misunderstanding and slow, careful trust to finally arrive at.
She thought about the manuscript waiting on her desk, about the story she'd been writing without fully realizing what it was becoming, and felt, for the first time, genuinely excited to finish it — not because her editor was waiting, not because of any deadline, but because she finally had an ending worth writing toward.
He said it back, she thought, letting herself into her own apartment, heart still racing pleasantly. He actually said it back.
She sat down at her desk, opened her laptop, and began typing before she'd even fully settled into her chair, the words coming easier than they ever had, propelled by a happiness so complete it demanded to be put down on paper before it could fade even slightly from memory.
