Three days of silence had done nothing to soften the sharp, jagged edges of what Zoey had discovered. If anything, the silence had given the feeling room to grow — turning over and over in her mind until it had accumulated a weight far heavier than the original discovery itself.
She stood outside Leo's door on the fourth morning, hand raised to knock, feeling the specific, dangerous quality of someone who had rehearsed a conversation so many times in her head that the actual words had started to lose their careful edges, becoming instead something raw and unfiltered.
Leo opened the door before she'd even finished knocking, relief flooding his face at the sight of her. "Zoey. I've been so worried, I wanted to give you space but I didn't know how much was—"
"We need to talk," Zoey said, cutting him off, voice tighter than she intended.
Something in his expression shifted immediately, hope dimming into careful wariness. "Okay," he said, stepping back to let her in. "Of course. Come in."
She didn't sit. She stood in the middle of his living room, arms crossed, the three days of accumulated hurt and confusion finally finding their way toward words.
"I keep going back through everything," she said, voice controlled but trembling slightly at the edges. "Every moment. The closet. The fire safety thing. All of it. And now I know you understood, at least partially, what I actually thought was happening, and you just — let me keep going. Let me keep making a fool of myself."
"Zoey, I've already apologized for that—"
"Apologizing doesn't undo it," she said, sharper now, the careful control beginning to slip. "Do you understand what it's like, finding out someone knew something that significant about you and just — decided, on their own, that you didn't need to know they knew? That they'd let you keep believing whatever you believed, keep embarrassing yourself, because telling the truth felt inconvenient?"
"That's not fair," Leo said, something defensive creeping into his own voice now. "I wasn't trying to embarrass you or manipulate anything. I told you, I didn't fully understand the extent of it until—"
"You understood enough," Zoey said, cutting him off again, voice rising now. "You understood enough to know I was scared of you at some point, and you let that continue. Do you have any idea what that's like? To find out someone watched you be afraid of them and just — waited it out, because saying something honest felt too complicated?"
Leo's face had gone pale, something raw and increasingly desperate entering his expression. "I never wanted you to be scared," he said, urgent now. "If I'd understood sooner how deep it went, I would have said something immediately. I swear to you, Zoey."
"But you didn't," Zoey said, and something old, familiar, and deeply unwelcome began surfacing in her chest — a specific, remembered feeling of standing under a tree, watching a life unfold that she'd had no part in, discovering, in one devastating instant, that someone she trusted had been living an entire hidden truth right alongside the one they'd shown her.
"This feels familiar," she continued, quieter now, more dangerous for the sudden drop in volume. "This exact feeling. Someone smiling at me, being warm and patient and endlessly kind, while secretly knowing something they never bothered to tell me. Do you know who else did that, Leo?"
"Zoey, don't—"
"Adrian," she said, the name landing like a blow. "Adrian did exactly this. Smiled at me for three years while living an entire second life I knew nothing about. Let me stay ignorant because telling the truth was inconvenient for him."
"That is nothing like what I did," Leo said, voice sharp now, genuine hurt breaking through the careful composure. "Zoey, I didn't have a secret family. I didn't lie to your face about who I was."
"You watched me hide in your closet, terrified, thinking you might be a killer," Zoey said, voice climbing now, the months of careful trust cracking open entirely under the weight of old, unhealed fear. "And instead of just telling me the truth — instead of just saying, 'hey, I think you might have the wrong idea about me' — you let it continue. You let me keep believing whatever I believed, because you liked the attention. Because some part of you enjoyed watching me twist myself into knots over you."
"That's not—" Leo's voice cracked, something devastated crossing his face. "Zoey, that's not what happened at all."
"Isn't it?" Zoey's voice had gone cold now, sharp with an old, protective fury that had nothing to do with logic and everything to do with self-preservation. "You and Adrian aren't so different, actually. Both of you standing quietly in the shadows, watching someone make a fool of themselves, letting it continue because the truth was inconvenient for you. At least Adrian was upfront about being a liar once I caught him. You've just been — smiling this whole time. Being patient. Being kind. While knowing the whole time that I was terrified of you and choosing not to fix it."
The words landed exactly as hard as she'd intended them to, and she watched them land — watched Leo's face go from hurt to something far more devastated, something that looked, unmistakably, like an old wound tearing back open.
He reached for her hand, desperate, urgent. "Zoey, please, just let me explain properly, I never meant—"
She pulled her hand away before he could finish, the motion sharp and final.
"Enough," she said, and heard her own voice crack slightly, though she pushed through it. "I can't do this right now. I can't listen to another explanation."
Leo stood very still, hand still half-extended toward her, and something in his face shifted — the desperate, pleading urgency draining away entirely, replaced by something quieter and far more frightening: a total, careful blankness, the specific stillness of a man absorbing a wound so deep he no longer had the energy to fight it.
"Okay," he said, quiet, voice flat in a way she'd never heard from him before. "Okay."
Zoey stood there for a moment, breathing hard, the echo of her own words — you and Adrian aren't so different — ringing uncomfortably in her own ears, some distant, horrified part of her already recognizing the damage she'd just done, even as the rest of her remained too raw, too defensive, to fully process it.
"I need to go," she said, quieter now, some of the earlier fire already fading into something closer to exhaustion.
Leo didn't argue. He simply nodded, expression carefully, deliberately blank, and stepped back to let her pass, and Zoey walked out of his apartment without looking back, some part of her already dreading what she would find if she did.
