Careveth was exactly as Liora had described.
Small, functional, organized around a market that had been operating since before anyone currently living could remember, built in the particular way of towns that had never been important enough to be destroyed and had therefore simply accumulated over centuries. The library was in the center, which was a choice that said something about what the town valued, and the food, as promised, was better than the road stops had been.
They arrived in the early evening and found an inn without difficulty — the town had two, which was one more than Wren had expected and one fewer than would have made the choice complicated. The innkeeper processed them with the mild interest of someone who found their registration unusual and had decided not to ask about it, which Wren was coming to recognize as the most functional response to her existence.
"Two rooms," she said, "adjacent if available."
The innkeeper looked at both bodies. "We have a pair on the second floor."
"Those."
Two rooms. Two doors, side by side, with a wall between them and a shared section of hallway. Liora looked at the arrangement when the innkeeper showed them up, said nothing, and set her bag down in the room on the left.
Wren stood in the room on the right with both bodies — Ira inside, Sera in the doorway — and experienced, for the first time in three days, the specific quality of space that wasn't shared. Not uncomfortable. Just: noticed.
She changed into clothes that weren't damp. She checked the window's threat-assessment (low: second floor, courtyard view, no convenient approach). She sat on the bed with Ira and looked at the ceiling, which was a different ceiling from all the other ceilings she'd looked at recently, and thought about nothing in particular for approximately four minutes.
In the next room, she could hear faint sounds of movement — Liora unpacking, which she did with the same efficiency she brought to everything, the sounds of someone who had unpacked in enough temporary places to have made it fast. Then quiet, which was probably Liora also looking at a ceiling.
Wren thought about the after-Careveth question.
She thought: I have had three days to think about it. I know the answer. I've known it since probably the rain shelter, or the road back from the publisher, or somewhere in the middle of the night watch when she was asleep in a space she'd trusted me to keep. I've been thinking about whether to say the answer rather than what the answer is.
She thought: the answer is yes. I want to figure it out together.
She thought: saying that changes something.
She thought: changing something is the point.
Then she went to find Liora for dinner.
---
The food stall Liora recommended was three streets from the inn, run by two people who had the coordinated efficiency of a working partnership that had been refined over a long time. The menu was chalked on a board and had been partially erased and rewritten, which meant it changed regularly, which meant they were cooking what was available rather than what was predictable.
They found a table in the corner — not the research corner, not the deliberate positioning of early Karath. Just a corner that was available and had two seats and was therefore where they sat.
Liora looked at the menu with the expression of someone actually choosing rather than calculating. She ordered something Wren didn't recognize. Wren let Ira's appetite make the decision and ordered what smelled best from the adjacent table.
They ate.
Wren realized, somewhere in the middle of the meal, that there was no agenda. Not the absence of agenda that had been awkward at the beginning of the Karath no-agenda day, when they'd both stood on the inn steps trying to figure out what the format was. The simple, settled absence of something that needed to happen next, which was different in quality.
She thought: we arrived somewhere. That changes the texture.
She thought: I have been moving since the first night. This is the first time arriving feels like something other than a temporary state.
"The food is better than I remembered," Liora said.
"You said unremarkable."
"I was being conservative. I'm often conservative about places I might return to." She looked at her food. "If you describe something accurately the first time and it doesn't meet the description on the return, it's unsatisfying. If you describe it conservatively and it exceeds the description, it's—"
"A different experience."
"Yes." She ate another bite. "I've been doing that with most things for three years."
Wren looked at her. "Describing them conservatively."
"Managing expectations." She turned her cup in her hands — no tea tonight, a warmer drink that smelled like spices and something fermented. "So that if they don't work out, the gap between expectation and reality is small."
"And if they work out better than expected?"
"Then you're pleasantly surprised instead of disappointed." A pause. "It sounds like a reasonable strategy until you notice that you've been doing it for three years and you've also been consistently surprised by things being better than you expected, which means the conservative description isn't accurate, it's just defensive."
Wren thought about this. "When did you notice?"
"Evrath," Liora said. "The spider silk town. I wrote in my notes that it was an interesting economic case study. It wasn't. It was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever seen and I didn't let myself write that because I was going to leave and it would hurt to have written it accurately." She looked at the cup. "I read that entry last night, on the road. I was in the wrong notebook — I thought I was reading the research one and I was in the personal one, the new category." A pause. "I rewrote the Evrath entry."
Wren looked at her for a moment. "What did you write?"
"The accurate version." She looked up, and the expression was the third one, the present one. "I'm practicing."
---
The memory of the convoy came up without Wren planning it.
Not as a narrative — not *and then this happened and then this happened.* More like the way certain things surface when the conditions are right, the way you smell something and remember a place without intending to.
She talked about Aldric first. About the specific quality of his economy with words and the way he'd said *no problems* at the Vethmore gate before she could say anything, and how she hadn't understood until later why that had mattered. About the extra payment for the third night's watch, given because he'd *calculated incorrectly,* which was how he expressed care when he expressed it at all.
She talked about Torven — the guard, the way he'd updated his assessment of her across three nights and how she'd tracked the update in real time as a data point that later became something else. About the fact that he'd been the first person to say *almost is all right* to her, which was a small sentence with disproportionate weight.
She talked about Mira. The child's boot in the doorway of the evacuated house. The silence in the wagon. The morning after, when Mira had looked at the tree line with the expression of a child who had decided to be matter-of-fact about the night before.
Liora listened. She asked questions that were not research questions — small ones, clarifying ones, the kind that were about understanding the story rather than categorizing its elements.
"Mira — she's the one who asked which body was real," Liora said.
"Yes."
"What did you say?"
"Both of us are real. The same amount of weird from both directions."
Something in Liora's expression shifted — not the research-focus, not the listening-presence. Something that might have been recognizing something it had been trying to place. "She understood that."
"She understood it before most adults have."
Liora was quiet for a moment. "Do you know if they made it? The convoy."
Wren looked at her hands. "No. I hope they did." She paused. "Aldric was practical. He knew the road. He had Torven." A pause. "I think they made it."
The silence after was comfortable in the way that silences about things you can't change and hope for are sometimes comfortable — not resolved, but settled.
---
"I didn't know you kept people," Liora said, after a while.
The statement landed in a way that was different from most of what Liora said — not because it was more significant, but because it was the first thing she'd said all evening that was about Wren rather than about a topic Wren was discussing. Not research. Not about the mechanics of Twinsoul or the academic question of psychological profile. About the specific fact of Wren, as a person, doing a thing that Liora hadn't predicted she would do.
Wren looked at her. "What?"
"I assumed—" she turned the cup in her hands, "—that the distributed attention of managing two bodies would make sustained connection with people more difficult. Not impossible, but more—" she searched. "Spread out. Less personal."
"Why would it do that?"
"I don't know. I think I was extrapolating from a false premise." She looked at the table. "I treated you as a research subject initially because I'd been studying Twinsoul mechanics in the abstract for three years and I had theoretical models that predicted certain kinds of consciousness. And those models implied certain kinds of experience. Including—" she paused. "Including being more interested in the mechanics of existing than in the experience of it."
Wren looked at her. "That describes the shadow model."
"Yes. Which we've established is wrong." Liora's mouth did the almost-wry thing. "I was working from the wrong model when I first met you."
"When did it change?"
Liora thought about this in the precise way she thought about most things. "When you said you'd minded some of the questions but you'd tell me which ones when you knew which answers mattered." She paused. "That was not something a person primarily interested in their own mechanics would say. That was something a person invested in a specific dynamic would say." She looked at her cup. "I updated the model."
Wren was quiet for a moment.
"When I arrived in this world," she said, "I had been in Pennsylvania for three years without keeping people either. Not because I was managing two bodies — I had one then, the normal number. Just because—" she stopped. "I was very good at being present in spaces without being present in the way that accumulated into connection."
Liora was looking at her with the present-expression. "What changed?"
"There wasn't anyone depending on me before," Wren said. "And then there were people in a wagon who were going to be hurt unless I moved, and I moved without calculating, and afterward there was a scholar-looking woman who asked me whether I'd calculated before moving and I didn't have a good answer." She paused. "And I started paying attention to which things I would move for without calculating."
A silence.
"I'm on that list," Liora said. Not a question.
"You are," Wren said.
---
They were walking back to the inn when Wren said it.
Not because the moment was perfect — it wasn't a particularly significant moment, just a street in Careveth with the evening settling and the occasional lamp lit in windows along the way. She said it because she'd been thinking about it for most of the meal and the meal was done and continuing to not-say it after she'd already thought it was starting to feel like the wrong kind of deferral.
"About the after-Careveth question," she said.
Liora's pace didn't change. But there was a quality to her stillness that was attentive in a way that stillness usually wasn't.
"Yes," she said.
"I want to figure it out together." Wren looked at the street ahead. "That's the answer."
A pause. Not a long one — not a processing pause, not an uncertain one. More like the specific pause of someone receiving an answer they'd been waiting for and allowing it to land before they responded.
"Okay," Liora said.
Just that. Not *I'm glad* or *thank you* or any of the things that would have meant something different. Just: okay. The word that meant *received, understood, registered.* The Liora word for yes.
They kept walking.
After a while, Liora said: "I haven't had friends."
The way she said it was not dramatic — the same register as *the food is better than I remembered.* Factual, present-tense, stated as simply as a thing that was simply true.
"Not colleagues?" Wren said.
"Colleagues are different. You care about each other's work because the work is shared. It's instrumental in both directions." She paused. "Friends are people you care about regardless of the work. I've read about them. I'm not sure I've had practice."
Wren thought about Pennsylvania — about three years of attending rather than being there. About the roommate she owed twelve dollars and the phone call she'd never made. "I'm not sure I have much more practice than you do."
"You kept Aldric and Torven and Mira," Liora said. "You remember them. That seems like practice."
"I had four days," Wren said. "I've been keeping them for two weeks."
"That's longer than I've kept most things." A pause. "I think that's the practice. Not the duration — the keeping."
Wren thought about this. "We can figure out what it looks like."
"Yes." Liora looked at the street. "You make that sound straightforward."
"It's not. But I think we know how to figure out things that aren't straightforward." She paused. "We've been doing it."
Liora was quiet for a moment.
Wren thought about what she'd said — *we've been doing it* — and thought about what *it* referred to: figuring out things that weren't straightforward. The research sessions. The psychological profile. The notebooks. The shared camp setup they'd developed without discussing. The distance that had been closing without either of them directing it to close. The after-Careveth question and the three days it had taken to answer.
None of that had been straightforward. All of it had been figured out.
She thought: we have evidence.
Then, with the same register as everything else she'd said: "I think you're right."
---
At the inn door, Liora stopped.
"Thank you," she said.
Wren looked at her. "For what?"
"For thinking about it." She paused. "For thinking about it seriously instead of just answering quickly." Another pause. "That mattered."
Wren looked at her. The Soul Resonance at one meter — whatever the new standard was; it had been approximately one meter for the last two hours — gave her something cleaner and more specific than it had ever given her before. Not a general impression. Something directed.
She said: "You didn't pressure me."
"No."
"You asked and then you waited and you didn't ask again." She paused. "That also mattered."
Liora looked at her for a moment with the present-expression. Something in it that was more specific than it usually was, more directed — the same thing the Soul Resonance had been logging as directed positive affect, except now she was seeing it in Liora's face rather than reading it as an emotional impression. The same thing, through a different channel.
Then she went into her room.
Wren went into hers.
She lay down — both bodies, familiar ceiling unfamiliar city — and opened the System interface because the ping from earlier was still there, unread.
*[Soul Resonance passive log — Subject: Liora. Update: Positive affect reclassified.]*
*['Undifferentiated' status deprecated. Current classification: directed positive affect. Object: specific. Intensity: moderate-high. Pattern: consistent across extended contact and proximity data.]*
*[Note: Subject has completed initial categorization process. This log will continue to update, but the primary classification question has been resolved. Further developments will be logged as changes in intensity, expression, or directionality.]*
*[The System notes that this represents a significant development in the interpersonal Sync trigger conditions identified in prior research sessions. Possible Sync Level impact: pending confirmation.]*
Wren read this.
She thought about *directed positive affect, object specific,* and she thought about the thing she had assigned three weeks ago and had been choosing not to say yet, and she thought about *you didn't pressure me* and *that also mattered.*
She thought: the System has categorized. I have not.
She thought: I know what it is. I have known for several days what it is.
She thought: the reason I haven't categorized it is not that I'm avoiding it. The reason is that naming it changes something, and I want to name it at the right moment with the right person and not into a System log at the end of a day.
She thought: that's not deferral.
She thought: that's exactly what pace means.
She thought: *pace* is knowing you're going to say a thing and choosing when, not whether.
She thought: I have been confusing *when* and *whether* for most of my life. The Pennsylvania version of me confused them constantly — not saying things because she wasn't sure if she'd say them or because she wasn't sure it was the right time, and never sorting out which one it was.
She thought: I am sorting it out now. That's what the fifteen days have been, among other things.
She looked at both ceilings — the same ceiling, viewed from different angles, in adjacent rooms with a shared wall — and she thought about the convoy and the border and the garden and the steps and the rain and the catch on the road, and she thought about three weeks of alive and what it had accumulated into, and she thought:
*I am going to tell her.*
*Not tonight.*
*When it's the right moment.*
*That's not a deferral. That's a decision.*
Both of her closed their eyes. The inn made its nighttime sounds. Somewhere in the next room, she could hear, very faintly, the sound of a notebook being opened.
She thought: she's writing in the personal category.
She thought: good.
She slept.
You've reached the end of this chapter
Careveth was exactly as Liora had described.
Small, functional, organized around a market that had been operating since before anyone currently living could remember, built in the particular way of towns that had never been important enough to be destroyed and had therefore simply accumulated over centuries.
She slept.
